Rösträttsdebatten i värmländsk press - åren 1912-19
2006 (Svenska)Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen)Studentuppsats (Examensarbete)
Abstract [en]

The starting-point for this work was my own personal interest in questions concerning social studies and gender issues. The purpose of this study was formulated in the following words: to examine the female suffrage debate as it is expressed in the editorial column in three of the newspapers in Värmland, Nya Wermlands-Tidningen, Värmlands Folkblad and Karlstads-Tidningen during the years 1912-1919, and thereby ascertain if there exists some dissimilarity between the three newspapers’ approach regarding the female suffrage, and furthermore to establish if any change in the position can be exposed during the examined timeframe. To accomplish the purpose of the study a number of questions was developed in order to separate the different circumstances surrounding each newspaper. The questions were formulated in the following words: 1. How does the newspaper NWT/VF/KT position itself concerning the issue of female suffrage, and how do they go about to convince the reader? 2. Is it possible within the timeframe of the study to establish a change in the position taken by the newspaper? The study is limited in time and also geographically due to reasons of interest and space. The purpose was attained by studying the editorial columns of the newspapers during the years 1912-1919, and selecting the ones where the female suffrage was an issue. To be able to make an analysis I’ve been using Lars Melin’s and Sven Lange’s book Att analysera text. I’ve been able to make some conclusions from my study concerning the debate in Värmland around the investigated time 1912-1919. During the years 1912-1913 it is possible to spot two defined and separated sides in the debate concerning the female suffrage. NWT is a pronounced opponent to the idea of female suffrage during the years 1912-1913. KT is on the other side an obvious advocate for the idea of female suffrage. VF was not being distributed during these years. KT is consistent to its opinion throughout the investigated period. NWT seems to alter its position in the question during the investigated period, but they are not completely convincing. An analysis of VF must be considered impossible due to the limited distribution of the newspaper during the investigated years. By way of conclusion can be mentioned that the essay does not answer the question whether the press influenced the political situation which came to solve the question of female suffrage, yet this is discussed.
