Youths speak of written language : A phenomenological study on youth’s experience of young people'swritten language (engelsk)
Abstract [en]

Despite society's increased demand for written language, and that people nowadays write morethan ever, there are prevailing discourses that young people´s writing skills are far too poor. These discourses are part of a writing debate regarding the written language of youths. One sideargues that young people are lacking in writing skills, while the other side states that, thanks toall informal channels, young people have good writing skills as they learn to write in differentcontexts and through different genres. Social media and data-mediated communication are abig part of the discussion, some saying that it negatively affects young people's formal writing, while others point out that all writing is beneficial, even of a more informal nature. This study is a phenomenological study with the purpose to give youths a hearing to the debateabout young people's writing and highlight their experiences and views regarding their ownwritten language. To collect data, qualitative, focused group interviews were conducted with13 young people eighteen-year-olds. The results show that young people have a lot to say aboutwritten language, formal as well as informal. All youths in the study believe that writing willplay an important role for their future, for example when writing a CV or for future studies atuniversities. The results also point out that the youths themselves do not perceive social mediaand its informal communication as negative for their formal writing. On the contrary, the resultsshow that youths see it as beneficial as they maintain a flow in their writing and thus get topractice and develop the writing on a daily basis. Informal writing, young people believe, willplay an increasingly important part in society, and thus become more accepted. Although thereis an awareness of the relevance of written language in society, youths are concerned abouttheir formal writing.
