The purpose of this study is to analyze the gender representation of men in four chosen video game covers. Each video game cover is individually analyzed with a semiotic image and idea analysis. Five ideal types are produced to help analyze the male characters in the video game covers. These ideal types are produced by studying R.W. Connell’s Masculinities and Lena Gemzö’s Feminism. The result of this study shows an ideal of masculinity in the four games. Three of the four character on the covers has the same body type and could be categorized as conventionally attractive, well trained men. A connection to famous male characters in movies could be seen and the conclusion was that a hegemonic masculinity in video games could be seen.
