Translation Problems in Children`s Literature: A Study of English Translations of Astrid Lindgren`s Emil Trilogy.
2000 (engelsk)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Oppgave
Abstract [en]

Astrid Lindgren’s books about Emil i Lönneberga appear to be difficult to translate, due to for example the Swedish agricultural settings of the past and the dialectal language. This essay will investigate how three translations about Emil into English are accomplished, focusing on change in meaning and the original atmosphere of the story. The result of the investigation shows some but no major linguistic shortcomings. On the other hand, is not the original atmosphere of the story completely preserved. The translations are understandable, but part of the literal value of the original is lost due to atmosphere changes in the translations.
