Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice contains one of her much discussed and well know themes; namely the idea of romantic love versus love for more practical reasons. The purpose of this essay is, therefore, to investigate the importance of marriage in the novel in connection with money, social status, and love. The Bennet daughters who unfortunately are left in a difficult situation when it comes to the entail of their father’s estate are faced with the fact that marriage might not just be an option, but a necessity for their survival. Therefore, by taking a closer look at the Bennet family, especially the daughters, one is able to reveal their views and motives for marriage. That is, whether or not they are willing to marry men just for their money and social status so that they can secure their future and establish themselves in society, or if the reason why they marry are nothing more than pure love. With this essay I hope to have illustrated the fact that there are exceptions among the Bennet sisters even though it was very common for most people during Jane Austen’s time to marry men for practical reasons rather than love.
