Disorder in William Shakespeares Macbeth
2001 (engelsk)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Oppgave
Abstract [en]

At the very core of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth lies the contrast between heavenly order and satanic chaos. The theme of disorder dominates the events of the play, bearing testimony of the main characters’ transgressions of rules, upon which the very stability of the universe relies. Seen from a historical and religious perspective this analysis is concentrated on what these rules are, and what consequences they lead to once broken. By looking at the mental development of the main characters, the changes Scotland undergoes, and certain events displayed in nature, I have reached the conclusion that breaking the rules and order established by God, unleashes uncontrollable forces of chaos. These in turn bring misery into society, lead to spiritual chaos for the sinners or transgressors, as well as offer a threat to the frame of the universe.
