Abstract [en]
Grief is universal and most of us have to experience it at some point. Grief is also often an unavoidable reality for those forced to flee or relocate. Losing a loved one could feel like losing part of our home. It can profoundly disrupt our life and change our definition of home and belonging. But what is home? Do we have to experience belonging to feel at home? What is the relation between grief and home? Bringing awareness to how homes, and emotions of home, can be affected by the death of someone close to us could help those who experience feelings of being lost as a result of mourning. This essay is intended as an investigation of what bridges the literature on home and migrants and the more general or universal nature of home and grief. The Fragility of Home is the common denominator. By drawing from my own experiences of losing my mother and how that has affected my view of home, I examine an emergent intercultural literature on home to find out if attachment to places and emotions of home and belonging, can be understood in relation to grief, in order to understand the fragility of home as universal and cross-contextual.
