Abstract [en]

External networks among deputy superintendents seem to be an increasing phenomenon in a sector that faces a rapid change and a high working load. Is this the new way to learn and improve the organization or just a social gathering with little value? In this study, the significance of networking among deputy superintendents is explored. This group of middle managers is less studied compared to superintendents. The following questions have guided the study: How are their networks designed? What themes and issues do they focus on? What networks are considered relevant? The data for this study were collected through a survey of participants in a seminar series arranged by the Swedish National Professional Association for Superintendents. Networking appears to blend operational, personal, and strategic issues, intertwining practical matters with personal and professional growth to address present challenges and future requirements. Even if networking is seen as less formal it requires individual engagement as it is embedded in a process to become a professional space that benefits both the individual and the school organization. Networks appear to provide essential resources for navigating the complexities embedded in tangled logics and the frequently unpredictable processes that follow.

Abstract [en]

This qualitative, exploratory, comparative study explores how school leaders in Kenya, Sweden, and the United States (specifically Texas) construct their identities through community-based equity work in their respective social and political contexts, and the extent to which this work contributes to a sense of joy and justice in their identity as a leader. We explore “renewing” across a 6-year continuum in which school leaders have constructed their identities in different national, social and political contexts.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This paper focuses on fundamental aspects of superintendency in Finland and Sweden, neighboring countries with a shared history, similar Nordic cultural beliefs and political systems. We investigate what more experienced superintendents consider to be essential knowledge as an outcome of what they have learned over their years in service. From what positions about truth do they orient themselves and make decisions concerning education? Thus, we aim to go beyond technical rationality and approach aspects of the basis of professional values. We conclude that superintendent’s professional landscape emerges in the cross- section of the four different sets of relationships, where loyalty, solidarity, faithfulness, and authenticity are at stake.

Abstract [en]

The School Superintendent – an old role in an altered shape

The position of school superintendent, established in 1958, was abolished in 1991 as

a law-regulated position. The equivalent tasks of a superintendent were thereafter

carried out by a local government official with many different titles and a varying

set of responsibilities. However, in 2018 the position of school superintendent

was re-established in the Swedish Educational Act. The purpose of this article is to

study how school superintendents interpret the consequences of this change with

regard to their commission and role. One-third of the informants claim that the

revision of the law has not affected their daily work, while almost half believe that it

has had some effect, albeit to a small extent. Informants believe it has contributed

to a more well-defined commission, a strengthened mandate, and a clarification of

the superintendents’ responsibilities, which can be interpreted as yet an expression

of an ongoing process of re-centralization in the Swedish school sector.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to find out how teachers’ expectations on their school leaders influence the principal role in practice. The research questions are: 1) How do the realistic expectations differ from the more idealistic ones? 2) How do teachers’ and principals’ expectations differ in real situations? 3) What are the principals’ view of the implications, when it comes to shape the leadership role? The study is framed within social psychological and organization development perspective. The results show that there are differences in the realistic and idealistic expectation. The significance of the study is the focus on the relations between teachers and their principals and how norms are constituted in real situations and shape the school leader role.
