The culture of hotel and restaurant work.

    Dangerous for apprentices and students?

The study is based on a survey targeting 50 teachers at chef schools with good geographic distribution of 9 schools. Teachers answer questions on bullying and sexual harassment in the hotel and restaurant sector, and students practice shock in the meeting with the industry. Students face a hard and tough environment where it is expected that it will suffer a great deal of harassment and degrading treatment as part of a tradition. There seems to be a general but erroneous belief that the professional climate has improved. The study shows that this is not the case. The respondents replied that bullying is common in the industry, and 92% of vocational teachers indicated that students are affected by a practice shock. The study shows that the industry climate has to be tough, but it is stated at the same time be too tough. Schools management lacks understanding and insight into the unique professional culture that prevails.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate newly graduated social workers and soon to be graduated students of social work and their experiences regarding legal knowledge as practitioners working in individual and family care. The study was carried out with the help of a qualitative method. The material was collected through semi-structured interviews with social workers working in different areas such as child and family-care, financial assistance and addiction-intervention care. The interviewees presented their experiences of differences and gaps, confidence in their own legal knowledge, the inevitable possibility to interpret, time during education, further development of legal knowledge, and promotional and inhibiting factors for learning. The theory being used is Aristotle's theory of knowledge and its further development of Kant and Ryle. The study consistently contains a professional-theoretical perspective. In addition, previous research has been used to link the results with both the theoretical perspective and the interviewees' statements. The result shows that there is a difference and a gap between studies and working life and that a large part of the legal knowledge comes from the work. The majority considered that they had acquired basic legal knowledge from their education but they wanted more in-depth knowledge. They also considered that the work as a social worker is complex, as the different areas within the law they work with leave a great deal of room for individual interpretations. Half of all interviewees also described a need for further development. A large part of previous research correlates with what emerged from the study's results. According to the interviewees, a large part of their knowledge derives from practical experience while there is an imminent desire to combine the practice with the theory.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis was to investigate how social workers, working within financial

assistance, perceive their opportunities to support the client's situation towards selfsufficiency.

This was done with a qualitative method in the form of individual interviews with

six social workers working within financial assistance. The empirical data was analysed based

on content analysis and the results were then analysed with sense of coherence (SOC) and

empowerment. The investigation revealed that social workers find their work meaningful

even though they have a high workload. They think they have a good relationship with most

of their clients, but they also encounter resistance from the clients. They feel that they can

support the clients toward self-sufficiency provided that the clients themselves are motivated

to do most of the work themselves. An effective interaction with other authorities was

highlighted as important so that the work done with and for the clients would be the most

beneficial. The social workers wish they had fewer clients so they could have more time to

actively work with each individual client, refer to their individual needs and motivate those

    who lack motivation.

Det sociala livets emotionella grunder2008Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract

It’s very important to promote good health, because the society today has high demands. This essay is a study on how teachers in physical education, work with health education, and an understanding of the term health. What is written in the curriculum regarding health, and does it cohere with reality.

I have done five qualitative interviews with active PE teachers in grade 7-9 and used relevant literature to my help from earlier research. The result of the interviews have been analysed and the study discusses important matters.

The result show that physical activity dominates sports education and activity is most significant for health. The teachers consider the few hours to be one of the main affects in choice of education. It is the holistic vision of health that teachers want to bring out, they also acknowledge that it is difficulty of define. The majority mean that health is when a person feels good. The social point of view is what creates bad health among the pupils, which leads to negative consequences for entire humanity. Health is often associated with theory lessons while athletic games are associated with practical education. Some people mean that health integrates when opportunity is given. It is foremost ergonomics, diet, condition and joy of activity the teachers point out as the most dominant features in their health education. Several of them want to inspire the lazy students and they hope that the students see the importance of health in the future perspective.

Birthgiving Women´s feelings and perceptions of quality of intrapartal care: a nationwide Swedish cross-sectional study2011In: Journal of Clinical Nursing, ISSN 0962-1067, E-ISSN 1365-2702, Vol. 20, no 7-8, p. 1168-1177Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aim. The aim was to explore the relationships between the feelings of women who give birth and several birth-related care conditions, the womens' socio-demographic background, personality and perceptions of the quality of intrapartum care. Background. Childbirth is a highly significant emotional event for women and it is an explicit goal that each woman should have a positive childbirth experience. Design. The nationwide study is cross-sectional and was conducted at Swedish maternity units over two months in 2007. Methods. The study group consisted of 739 women (63% response rate). A dimensionality analysis of six emotion items was performed using structural equation modelling (SEM). Non-parametric tests and generalised linear mixed effects model analyses were used to study relationships and to make subgroup comparisons. Results. In the SEM analysis, a positive and a negative feeling factor were identified. Strong associations between the feeling factors and the womens' perceptions of the quality of care were found, particularly in regard to the so-called identity-oriented approach of the midwives and other health professionals. In addition, a higher intensity of negative feelings was associated with a personality pattern characterised by extraversion, emotional instability and lower degree of conscientiousness, a lower level of education and having had delivery through Caesarean section. Conclusions. The positive and negative feelings of women who give birth strongly covary with the women's perception of the quality of their intrapartum care. This pertains in particular to information issues, the midwives showing commitment, empathy and respect, being present during labour and allowing the women to actively participate as much as they want to. Relevance to clinical practice. Subgroup differences indicate that midwives should pay increased attention to childbearing women who have primary school education only, a lower emotional stability and/or deliver through Caesarean section.

    Abstract [en]

In my degree project I have chosen to write about the social interactions in children’s play. Iwanted to study their free play and the time when their teachers tell them what to play to seewhat their social interactions look like. The purpose with my research is to study whathappens in the social interactions in their different playing situations.I performed three observations of the free play and three observations of the guided play at apreschool to study what social interactions that takes place in the different playing situations. What happens and what patterns can I find in their play.In my research I had some questions that this project rests upon:

What happens in the social interactions in the different playing situations?

How do the children’s different social interactions look? The children that I have observed showed me that when they are interacting they especiallyuse their cognitive abilities, because an interaction needs a certain mental development. Thesecognitive abilities give an expression in the body language, to be able to share a commonattention, the possibility to share a state of mind or affections with one or more friends. When I observed from a linguistically point of view, I saw there it was a lot of use for words in thedifferent social interactions and there was a lot of body language. If there is a group of children then they have to learn in some way to communicate and tointeract with each other and sometimes it will lead to a fight and sometimes it will go fine. Inmy observations I have seen that the social interactions worked out and that for the most partthe children were considered of the others feelings. Even if it became different roles in theirplay but no social interaction is alike and the children learn by every situation they are given.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to investigate the clients 'and the social workers' experience of the method of motivational interviewing, which is answered by the questions; how do clients experience the contact with social workers who use MI as a method and what is the social worker's experience of MI as a method. The study was conducted with a triangulation qualitative method where the purpose of the study was illuminated from three different perspectives. The empirical data is therefore based on two interviews with clients, two interviews with social workers and two MI-recorded real-sections between the client and the social worker. As a theoretical framework, the result has been analyzed based on the concept of empowerment. The result shows that the relationship between social worker and client is an essential factor to break destructive behavior. All of the informants believes that formulating partial goals is an important part in the changing process. The client has a personal responsibility to change their situation, one client is negative to that responsibility. Both of the clients report that, when in an active addiction, the contact with the social services only were about gain money or use the system. In this phase there is no motivation to change, which leads to difficulties. The results show that clients have experienced their administrators as supportive and secure in the process of becoming free from their addiction.

Social capital in relation to depression, musculoskeletal pain and psychosomatic symptoms: A cross-sectional study of a large population-based cohort of Swedish adolescents2010In: BMC Public Health, ISSN 1471-2458, E-ISSN 1471-2458, Vol. 10, no 715Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Background

Social capital has lately received much attention in health research. The present study investigated whether two measures of subjective social capital were related to psychosomatic symptoms, musculoskeletal pain, and depression in a large population of Swedish adolescents.

    Methods

A total of 7757 13-18 year old students anonymously completed the Survey of Adolescent Life in Vestmanland 2008 which included questions on sociodemographic background, neighbourhood social capital, general social trust, and ill health.

    Results

Low neighbourhood social capital and low general social trust were associated with higher rates of psychosomatic symptoms, musculoskeletal pain, and depression. Individuals with low general social trust had more than three times increased odds of being depressed, three times increased odds of having many psychosomatic symptoms, and double the odds of having many symptoms of musculoskeletal pain.

    Conclusions

The findings make an important contribution to the social capital - health debate by demonstrating relations between social capital factors and self-reported ill health in a young population.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is that through a qualitative interview study investigating what kind of motivation and, to the extent they exist, turning points that led individuals to emerged from an alcohol addiction. The study was conducted through six interviews with individuals who have been living with alcohol abuse and through the treatment received help to get out of said abuse. The interviews was booked with the help of the social services in a Swedish municipality where all respondents have completed their treatment. We have interpreted our empiricism by labeling theory and defining moments. The result presents themes that highlight the similarities in the respondents' experiences. The result demonstrates that individuals need to get an insight into his addiction to treatment will have a positive impact. This insight is acquired through various processes or physical damage that affected respondents lives. The motivation of the individual and the private network allso affects the ability to get out of an alcohol abuse. Respondents felt that the need for treatment is the key to freedom from alcohol abuse when they felt that they did not have the knowledge or the ability to do it themselves. This is something that is supported by previous research in the area.
