Regionalisering och demokratiaspekten: En fallstudie av Region Värmland2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This is a study of how democracy is affected by regionalization. The study focuses on values related to the democracy; these values are representative, transparency, participation, anchoring of decisions and accountability. The case study for this essay is the Regional Development Council of Värmland case study of Region Värmland.

1997 a proposition was put forward the Swedish government about changes in responsibilities regarding four Swedish counties. It was decided that Kalmar, Gotland, Skåne and Västra Götaland County would be part of pilot project with extended regional autonomy.

Region Värmland was formed at 2001 as a Region Development Council and was at 2007 transformed to a co-cooperative body. Region Värmland has an indirectly elected council, i.e. the members are not directly elected in the regions but nominated by its constituent members. The reason for choosing Region Värmland as a case study is because it is indirectly elected.

The aim of this essay is to explore if becoming a region has affected the democracy and within the county and the democratic values, representative, transparency, participation, anchoring of decisions, and accountability. This is done by text analysis of regulatory documents which sets out the working procedures of the Region Värmland.

The results founds is that some values of democracy have weakened at the regional level of governance. Representativeness is one democratic value that weakens of because of the indirectly elected council. But at the same time it have strengthened because it is in all cases the politicians that we have chosen and feel confident for that govern our region. Further the study found that value of accountability with this type of governance has weakened of that reason that we can´t control our politicians with threats or promises at the next election. Transparency, participation and anchoring of decisions are values that do not seem to be affected negative, rather positive as these democratic values increase when the decision-making comes closer to the citizen. So the conclusions is when municipalities which work together with other actors in the form of public authorities, organizations, businesses and the public to jointly strive to improve the future of Värmland is positive from a democratic perspective.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to investigate preschool teachers´views of recycling in preschool. Eight preschool teachers were interviewed. Four of them worked in relatively newley-started prescools and four teachers in preschools that have existed for several decades. The result showed that the preschool teachers do not work so much intentionally with recycling, but still some recycling were included in their work. The teachers in the newer preschools work less with recycling than the older ones. There were shared opinions among the educators regarding their own interest in recycling and the attitude towards it. However, all prescools teachers agreed that recycling is important for the preschool, since it is in preschool that all learning begins. Lack of time and lack of conditions were some of the reasons the educators stated for not working with recycling. It might as well be a lack of intrest among preschool leaders.

    Abstract [en]

This study is based on the notion that all students are likely to have a computer of some kind as their primary tool at school within a few years. The overall aim is to contribute to the knowledge of what this development of computer-assisted multimodal text production and communication on and over the net may entail in a school context.

The study has an abductive approach drawing on theory from Media and Communication studies and from Pedagogy - particularly on media pedagogy, multimodality, storytelling, conversation research and deliberative democracy – and is based on a DBR project in three schools. The empirical data are retrieved from four school classes, school years 4 and 5, with good access to computers and digital cameras. The classes have used the class blogs to tell the blog visitors about their school work and Skype to communicate with other classes in Sweden and Tanzania. A variety of research methods was employed: content analysis of texts, observations with field notes and camera documentation, interviews with individual students, group interviews with teachers and students, and a small survey. The study is essentially qualitative, focusing on students’ different perceptions. A small quantitative study was conducted to determine if any factors and variables could be linked to each other and to enable comparisons of the surveyed group with other research results.

The results suggest that more computers at school offer more opportunities for real-life assignments and the chance to secure an authentic audience to the students’ production; primarily the students’ parents and relatives, students in the same class and at other schools. A theoretical analysis model to determine the degree of reality and authenticity in various school assignments was developed.

The results also indicate that having access to cameras for documenting various events in the classes and to an authentic audience can create new opportunities for storytelling that have not been practiced previously at school. The documentary photo invites a viewer into the present tense of the image and the location where the picture was taken, whoever took the picture. It is used by the students and here too, a model has been developed to describe this relationship.

The study also focuses on the freedom of expression and democracy. One of the more unexpected findings is that the students in the study did not see that they can influence other people’s perceptions or change various power structures through communication on the web, neither in nor outside of school.

Selling a place in the sun: International property mediation as production of lifestyle mobility2012In: Anatolia: An International Journal of Tourism and Hospitality Research, ISSN 1303-2917, E-ISSN 2156-6909, Vol. 23, no 2, p. 251-267Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Buying property abroad is not a new phenomenon, but academic research into the complexities of international property mediation is underdeveloped. This paper adopts a wide perspective on lifestyle-driven mobilities, including the semi-permanent relocation of Swedes to warmer destinations in the Mediterranean and other regions, and explores the functions of international property mediation. On the basis of data gathered from interviews with property agents, the objectives are to describe the organization of the international property sector, to understand the mediating roles of property agents, and position property mediation as production of lifestyle mobility. Property agents are understood to play a crucial role as intermediaries, influencing the client’s decisions by combining instrumental, interactionary, communicative, and social functions of mediation. Because of their superior expertise on property transaction procedures and regulations, area characteristics and contact networks, agents may influence clients’ decisions; however this also depends on their skills in interpreting client expectations and experiences, and the ability of the client to manage the process themselves.

The Best of Both Worlds: Aspirations, Drivers and Practices of Swedish Lifestyle Movers in Malta2013Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

It has often been claimed that contemporary societies are shaped by globalization; the rapid interconnections of societies, economies, markets, flows and information potentially linking all places in the world to each other. In search for experiences, variation, escape or comfort, individuals are travelling, circulating, and migrating between places, challenging the notions of ‘home’ and ‘away’, ‘everyday’ and ‘extraordinary’. This thesis addresses the ways lifestyle-led mobilities are produced and performed, by studying the mobility trajectories and experiences of Swedes dividing their time seasonally between Sweden and Malta. It explores how movers are faced with a structural framework that both facilitates and directs their choices concerning mobility, and how they interpret and respond to these structures. It also explores the imaginaries, meanings, and feelings for place, identity, and lifestyle that the movers negotiate through their mobility practices and through the links they create and sustain in places. Thus, this thesis is situated in an evolving field of research on lifestyle mobilities. Lifestyle mobilities are here defined as those mobility practices undertaken by individuals based on their freedom of choice, of a temporal or more permanent duration, with or without any significant ‘home base(s)’, that are primarily driven by aspirations to increase ‘quality of life’, and that are primarily related to the individuals’ lifestyle values. The thesis is based on four individual papers exploring different aspects lifestyle mobility. The aim is to understand how production and performance aspects of lifestyle mobilities are related, and how notions of identity and belonging are negotiated in relation to lifestyle mobility practices. The production aspect relates to those structures and frameworks that create, facilitate, or sometimes delimit opportunities for lifestyle mobility while the performance aspect focuses on individual agency and meaning of lifestyle mobility practices. The studies are based on in-depth interviews with Swedish movers in Malta, and focus on how structural frameworks and mediations influence the ways that movers manoeuvre, manipulate or adapt to structures and influences in order to arrange their life context to achieve ‘quality of life’. A second aim focuses on the ways that movers reflect upon their identities and belongings as they travel routinely between two (or more) significant places, and how this may influence mobility practices. It is concluded that structures and mediations are both facilitating and delimiting movers’ space of choice regarding mobility decisions. Through their agency, movers negotiate their space of choice by allocating resources and experience, accessing supportive networks and tailoring their access to entitlements. The production and performance aspects of lifestyle mobility practices are interlinked in complex ways.

    Abstract [en]

An electronic survey was performed to conduct a regression study. The study was conducted with the specific goal to find the explanatory value in religious orientation for subjective well-being for religious Swedes. Samples were drawn from internet based clusters. The survey was made available on five different closed groups for religiously active members on social media. I/E-R was translated and used to measure religious orientation on three dimensions. Subjective well-being was measured using SWLS. Two single items measured regular religious activity. A forced-entry multiple regression analysis showed an explanatory value of 12 percent for the predictors intrinsic and extrinsic belief. Regular religious activity was measured to be uniformly high. Subjective well-being was found to be in the upper levels of normal well-being. The conclusion drawn was that religious activity inhibited dysfunctional behavior and thus brought about a healthy well-being. In addition it was concluded that the cultural sensitivity in the religious orientation scale made measurements unreliable in the Swedish society. Future research is encouraged to control for social recourses when testing for effects on well-being as well as to control for what specific religion is practiced.

    Abstract [en]

A good cooperation between teachers and guardians is one of the most important requirements for being perceived as a good teacher. This may contribute to an increasing administrative load and contributing to increased stress and reduced time to prepare for teaching. How much time is spent, what issues are handled and what contact media is used for teacher-guardian contacts is mainly unknown. Therefore, in this study, the amount of, and time spent on contact with guardians was quantified and the issues handled and contact media used analyzed. Both the number of contacts and how much time was allocated to contact guardians varied widely between individuals, although it was clear that female teachers, as a group, had more contacts and spent more of their time on contact with guardians than their male colleagues. From the collected data it was also evident that communication regarding administration and information was prioritized over communication regarding educational activities. In addition, duties that where not legislative had to be carried out outside working hours. The material collected provide a good overview of how contact with guardians may look, may provide a basis for discussion of teachers' work environment and may help young teachers prepare.

    Abstract [en]

Large corporations over the world have been reporting their sustainable commitments throughout the years. This has been done on a voluntary basis, in the absence of regulatory requirements for sustainability reporting. Though, things are about to change within the field of sustainability. The European Union takes serious concern about the current climate change and the abuse of child labour. In order to do something about this they want to include big corporations which have not addressed these issues already. Therefore, the EU has changed their Directive regarding the disclosure of non-financial information which will force its members to implement it in the near future. The draft in Sweden is expected to be implemented by the 1 July 2016. This can be considered as a crossroad, since there will be a shift from self-regulation to more statutory regulation. Hence, the purpose of this study is to declare whether or not the draft regarding sustainability reporting is positive and if it is appropriate. This includes an explanation of sustainability reporting and the understanding of its incentives. Furthermore, the purpose leads to our three research questions.

To achieve the purpose of the research and answer the research questions we used a qualitative strategy and conducted 12 semi-structured interviews with different stakeholders. The theoretical framework with relevant theories has given us a solid ground to achieve a deeper understanding in the field. The analysis consists of the empirical evidence of our informants which then is related to our theoretical foundation.

The study confirms that sustainability reporting is about implementing the Brundtland Commisions' definition of a sustainable development. This can be accomplished by reporting on environmental, social, and economic aspects which are related to the corporations. Until today corporations have been reporting on their sustainability commitment on a voluntary basis in order to obtain legitimacy. Moreover, we find that there are certain stakeholders which are affecting the supply of corporate information more than others. Furthermore, we can see that there is a growing interest for sustainability and sustainability reporting, and that the increase is a part of the current societal development. Finally, based on the stakeholders opinions we can see that the draft is something that is wanted in order to set the level. They point out that it is one missing detail in the draft and on that account there is a wish for a slightly harder requirement. It is the requirement regarding the independent audit that is lacking according to the stakeholders. Since it contributes to higher quality and credibility.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

About 10 years ago the Swedish Armed Forces made a reformation of the officers corps. Since 1983 there were only commissioned officers in the armed forces and now it was time to change back into a system with both officers and non-commissioned officers. But the reorganization does not seem to go along with the Swedish Armed Forces intent. The purpose of this thesis is to find out what did not go as intended and try to explain why. This study uses a survey on the non-commissioned and commissioned officer in the army and analyze the result with the help of theories of organizational change. The results show that there are no big resistance against the reform as a general concept but the biggest deviations is to be found in how the officers early careers is manifested. It seems to be connected to strong opinions within the corps and there lies also part of the explanation: The Swedish Armed Forces failed to convince the corps of the necessity to change the role of the officers.

Customer roles from a self-service system perspective2018In: International Journal of Quality and Service Sciences, ISSN 1756-669X, E-ISSN 1756-6703, Vol. 10, no 2, p. 196-210Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: This paper aims to develop a theoretical framework of archetypical customer roles in a self-service-based system by applying role theory to understand customers’ resource integration and value co-creation efforts in practice. Design/methodology/approach: This study is based on a three-phase explorative case study of customers’ experiences of using self-service technologies at a furniture retailer. A total of 90 interviews were conducted. Findings: Four archetypical enacted customer roles during value co-creation in a self-service-based system are identified: passive non-bothered, passive hesitant, active realist and active independent. Furthermore, it is shown that these roles shape how resources become. Research limitations/implications: The challenges facing our retail practice bear similarities with those in other contexts, e.g. financial and travel industries, government or public sector service settings, in which self-service technologies are becoming more common. Therefore, this study setting enables some tentative generalizations. The case study approach, however, limits the statistical generalizability of the findings. Practical implications: The importance of understanding is that not all customers are well-equipped for co-creating value through self-service. By engaging customers and offering them guidance when they encounter difficulties in managing the value co-creation process, as well as viewing them as resource integrators and value co-creators, firms can help them enact more active roles. Originality/value: The archetypical customer roles contribute theoretically to detailing how resource integration and value co-creation can be shaped by enacted roles, an influence that has not been explicitly proposed in empirical service research.

    Abstract [en]

The work has been to investigate how often men and women are portrayed in textbooks and how often men and women are mentioned in the textbook register. The textbooks that will be examined are Levande Historia. The examine will be done in two different editions of the Levande historia textbooks. The textbooks are adapted for the swedish high school and are written by two different curricula LPO94 which is included in the book syllabi and grading criteria 2000, and curricula for elementary school, kindergarten and pre-school class of 2011. The method I have used for in the examination part is quantitative method.

In the first step of my investigation I will count how often women and men occur in the pictures in textbooks. In the second step I will examine the textbook registers and count how often women and men are named in the textbook register. The third step is a continuation of the second one, where I will use the women who were named in the register and make a chart that will visualize in which time period they are mentioned in. In the fourth step I will examine designations I found interesting in the registry analysis. The results will be presented in both text and graphics to clearify even more.

The picture analysis results show that in the previous edition of Levande Historia 70 percent of the identifiable people found in the pictures are men. The remaining 30 percent are women. In the recent edition of Levande Historia 72 percent of the identifiable people in the pictures are men versus 28 percent who are women. This shows that women have been declined in the illustrations in these books instead of increasing which was not expected to happen durring the 10 years between the two editions. Pictorial women are underrepresented as men appear more often on pictures in the textbooks.

The register analysis shows that in the previous edition of Levande Historia 2003, the book contains only 5.5 percent of female characters and 94.5 percent male characters. In the recent edition of the Levande Historia 2013, the book contains only 5 percent of female characters and 95 percent male characters. This is based on how many women and men that were named in the books records. The result of this shows that female characters have declined and male characters have increased in the recent edition of Levande historia. The continuation of the register analysis shows that there are women in the textbooks that aren’t mentioned in the register and that several time periods is lacking of female individuals in both editions of Levande historia.

After the examination of the textbooks Levande historia I have come to the conclusion that the textbooks do not live up to what the authorities clearly write in the school's values that schools shall promote an equivalent image of women and men. The final results that I have come to after the investigations is that women are underrepresented and passive in the teaching materials.

    Abstract [en]

This study was conducted to investigate norms for motherhood and gender equality among Swedish mothers. The aim was to find if there are differences in how women relate to the norms, how they control impressions they send out, and if there is any conflict regarding these norms. Used theoretical framework was norms in general and impression management. We used a qualitative approach, and conducted interviews with mothers of young children.   The results show that women relate to the norms about the good mother as a norm, feeling guilt and shame, not being able to reach up to all expectations, but also facing sanctions when being too good. On the other hand we find that the Swedish gender equality ideal, aren’t a norm but an ideal and that some women refer to equality in the household as a question of that both should be satisfied. We believe this is a proof of that the Swedish equality has not yet been integrated in the society norms, for our informants. We also find that norms and ideal affect the impression management. Various number of expectations therefore results into a norm conflict for the mother. All together these expectations are unreachable, and results in sanctions of for example guilt and shame. We introduce a new concept to describe all these norms and the norm conflict within the mother; norm conglomeration. Our conclusion are that to be a good mother you must be moderate both related to motherhood norms and ideals of gender equality.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to examine how two Swedish educators in different primary schools choose fiction while teaching, how they work with fiction, which reading strategies they use while reading fiction and how the two classes differ. One of the classes is ethnically homogenous and one is multicultural. The study is based on qualitative interviews and observations which have been carried out with two educators in two different schools. The result of the study shows that the two educators regard their work with reading strategies and fiction as important and central to teaching. Although the two teachers use different reading strategies, they claim that all educators adapt the use of reading strategies depending on the group of students they have. With the help of interviews and observations, both differences and similarities were noted regarding the use and work with fiction and reading strategies in the multicultural and ethnically homogeneous class.

    Abstract [en]

My purpose with this study is to highlight how Swedish-language teachers in the grades 4-6 describe how they map and teach students reading comprehension. The study is a qualitative study in which I have used semi-structured interviews. Five teachers from four different schools have participated. The analysis of my empirical material is based on a sociocultural perspective.

The results from the completed study show that each teacher has a broad definition of the concept reading comprehension. Decoding and word comprehension are the most significant components. To be able to draw conclusions, summarize, interact with the text by using preexisting knowledge, and to connect the text with personal experiences are also important components in the term reading comprehension.

Furthermore, the results show that the teachers are very explicit in their teaching when they model different reading strategies. Each teacher uses parts of research based teaching models but not the models in their entirety. The teachers say that the lessons must motivate and engage the students. The results also show that the teachers use recorded texts as an essential part of the lessons; the students can improve their reading comprehension by listening. The teachers also claim that the students improve their reading comprehension collectively with others.

Mänskliga och sociala framgångsfaktorer för att uppnå en positiv förändringsprocess vid införande av affärssystem: En fallstudie av en kund–systemimplementatörsrelation2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to investigate the communicative resources used by children when negotiating for access, studying such things as what communicative methods they use, for what purpose, and when children use an adult as a resource for communication. This is a qualitative study based on structured non-participatory observations using field notes, and for the analysis I use an ethnographic method. The study takes off in a socio-cultural perspective on learning. The children in the study are aged 1-3 years and there are 9 children in total being observed. The results from the study show that children use different resources at different types of access. When they want to seek access to a game they use artefacts/objects/items, their body or their voice. When they want to invite to a game, they use artifacts, voices, or moves. When they want to negotiate about leadership in a game they use artefacts, their bodies, or an adult as a communicative resource. It has been shown that artifacts are very important for children's negotiations on access to play. The adult is used as a communicative resource when the children themselves feel they can not cope with the situation themselves. Movement is used as a communicative resource by the children to attract other children to follow and thus invite play and take the lead role.

The buffering effect of tangible social support on financial stress: Influence on psychological well-being and psychosomatic symptoms in a large sample of the adult general population2014In: International Journal for Equity in Health, ISSN 1475-9276, E-ISSN 1475-9276, Vol. 13, article id 85Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Financial stress is an important source of distress and is related to poor mental and physical health outcomes. The present study investigated whether tangible social support could buffer the effect of financial stress on psychological and psychosomatic health. Methods: Two separate postal surveys were sent to random samples in five counties in Sweden in 2004 and 2008, with a total of 84 263 respondents. The questionnaires included questions about financial stress, tangible social support, psychosomatic symptoms, and psychological well-being (General Health Questionnaire-12). Results: Individuals with high financial stress and low tangible social support had six to seven times increased odds ratios for low psychological well-being and many psychosomatic symptoms. By contrast, individuals with high financial stress and high tangible social support had only two to three times increased odds ratios for low psychological well-being and three to four times increased odds ratios for many psychosomatic symptoms, suggesting a buffering effect of tangible social support. Consistent with the buffering hypothesis, there were significant interactions between financial stress and social support, particularly in relation to low psychological well-being. Conclusions: Social support had its strongest effect at high levels of financial stress. The question whether the altering of our social networks may improve physical health is important for the prevention of ill health in people experiencing financial stress. Strengthening social networks may have the potential to influence health-care costs and improve quality of life.

Psychosomatic symptoms and low psychological well-being in relation to employment status: The influence of social capital in a large cross-sectional study in Sweden2014In: International Journal for Equity in Health, ISSN 1475-9276, E-ISSN 1475-9276, Vol. 13, article id 22Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Unemployment is associated with adverse effects on health. Social capital has been suggested as a promoter of health via several causal pathways that are associated with the known health risk factors of being unemployed. This cross-sectional study investigated possible additive-and interaction effects of unemployment and five different measures of social capital in relation to psychosomatic symptoms and low psychological well-being. Methods: A random population sample of 20,538 individuals aged 18-85 years from five counties in Sweden completed a postal survey questionnaire including questions of employment status, psychosomatic symptoms, psychological well-being (General Health Questionnaire-12) and social capital. Results: Psychosomatic symptoms and reduced psychological well-being were more frequent among unemployed individuals compared with individuals who were employed. Moreover, low social capital and unemployment had additive effects on ill-health. Unemployed individuals with low social capital-specifically with low tangible social support-had increased ill-health compared with unemployed individuals with high social capital. Moreover, to have low social capital within several different areas magnified the negative effects on health. However, no significant interaction effects were found suggesting no moderating effect of social capital in this regard. Conclusions: Elements of social capital, particularly social support, might be important health-protective factors among individuals who are unemployed.

Kritiska framgångsfaktorer som bidrar till lojala kunder för små detaljistföretag via e-handel: En explorativ kvalitativ studie2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Too Late for Snowman: Transhumanist Ideals in Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay attempts to study transhumanism and its role in the anthropogenic pandemic at the center of the novel, in order to show that transhumanist thought was a driving factor behind it. By looking at transhumanist concerns in the portrayed society, and the beliefs of Crake, one uncovers that Crake was able to exploit the desire for enhancement of humanity as a whole in order to achieve the ultimate transhumanist goal: the near-perfect and immortal posthuman Crakers. Analyzing the intentions behind the creation of the posthuman, and Snowman’s relationship to them, it becomes clear that the posthuman is a replacement of existing humanity, since the sought after qualities of the posthuman can only be attained through genetic engineering before birth and not by altering individual humans. I hope to have shown that the novel contains a warning about transhumanism and the potential misuse of science when one person think things through to its logical conclusion.

    Abstract [en]

Despite claims that planners' attitude towards public participation has not always been enthusiastic, there have been genuine attempts to devolve powers through participation—although seldom with success. In this paper we discuss several major attempts to improve participation in Sweden including case studies of e-participation. Despite great expectations on information and communication technologies, Swedish experience indicates that the status quo between planners and people remains.

    Abstract [en]

The work refers to taking the pulse of aesthetic learning processes in preschool. What is defined as aesthetic learning processes? How much influence teachers' subject knowledge staging of aesthetic learning processes in preschool? Do the aesthetic learning processes mean that the body is seen as the main tool and starting point for all knowledge creation? By use of literature review, questionnaire and interview methods examined this closely. The survey shows that there is a certain imbalance in the teachers' subject knowledge connected to aesthetic expression. The art subject can be seen to have a head start when it comes to staging aesthetic learning processes in preschool.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this narrative study is to investigate and develop an understanding of pupils´ experiences of being diagnosed as dyslectics and their experiences of school life. The study aims to examine the following questions:

    • What and how do pupils narrate about being diagnosed as dyslectics?
    • What told experiences have pupils with dyslexia of their school life?
    • What identity appearances do the pupils make in their narrations?

The empirical study consists of narrations of two pupils´ experiences of being diagnosed with dyslexia and being a pupil in school. Methodologically, this study is socially situated, which means that the narrations and identity appearances are constructed in the meeting between the interviewee and the interviewer and the life stories were created in a social context together with others. The analysis is focused on what and how the pupils narrate and the narrations have been compiled to life stories.

The result showed that the pupils were positive to being diagnosed, because it helped them to understand the specific difficulties and they became aware of that the difficulties are not related to intelligence. The relations to and the teachers´ attitudes, strategies for helping and understanding of their difficulties and needs were highly valued in this study.

When pupils´ experiences are described in life stories, teachers and special educators can gain an understanding for their situations and the life stories can motivate a change and form basis for decisions on further research of pupils´ reading and writing difficulties. This is especially important in special educator´s mission to create opportunities for each pupils´ learning and development.

Omvälvning eller invävning: En sociologisk undersökning av Feministiskt Initiativs partiprogram2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This master degree paper is a sociological investigation of the political platform from the Swedish party Feministiskt Initiativ (feminist initiative). The paper is made with an discourse theoretical influence, aiming to explore the views of the world that are constructed in the platform, in terms of overturning and integrating, in regards of political discourses and the human as a being. The papers handle the research questions 1) What pictures of reality is constructed in the political platform regarding a) politics, b) the world, c) human equality? 2) How could those constructions be understood in terms of overturning or integration? Besides that does the paper aim to trace the outline of a role model for the equal person in the platform: how should one be, and who should one strive to be, in order to get the authority to speak on equality issues?

The main focus for this paper is the opening text in the platform, which serves as the foundation of this investigation. The rest of the program, form as well as content, serves as supporting and a way to deepen the analysis made from the introductory text.

The view of the world as it appears in the platform has been analysed with mainly sociological theories regarding identity, gender, power and politics. According to those views is the question raised whether the view of the world in the platform can be seen as a way to integrate new perspective in the current order of things, or rather to overturn the same.

The findings indicate that there is not one uniform view of the world in the platform, but several, which also can be found in the feministic academic debate. There are however a main focus on gender as political subject, and a strong connection to an emancipatory and liberating tradition. There is also a tendency in the platform to stress the importance of formal knowledge and education as tools to see trough discriminating structures, to set the human potential free. My analysis point to an outline of the equal person as a literate and cultivated person, and that it is that kind of person that the platform recommends us to integrate in the established political arenas. Lastly, the paper points towards several directions for further investigation, mainly about how negotiations regarding views of the world and spokes position are made in a political movement, in its wider sense.

Representant för hälsa: En kvalitativ studie om personliga tränarens roll i fenomenet hälsoism2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to shed light on the phenomenon healthism based on personal trainers’ perspective. Previous research has shown that healthism is a rapidly growing phenomenon in the western world.

Based on the purpose, three issues were created; How do personal trainers discuss their view as a role model in health? How does health awareness appear in everyday life for personal trainer? What does a healthy lifestyle for personal trainer mean?

The study used the qualitative method and consisted of four interviews. The informants were educated and worked in some form of personal training.

A part of the the results show that personal trainers consider themselves as role models and representatives of health. This leads to the proper behavior must occur in an environment where clients or potential clients can keep track of one. Not having the right behavior in such situations can result in being considered as an extremely unreliable personal trainer. Another result shows that a healthy lifestyle is important for personal trainers but it is equally important not to have too healthy behavior either. A too healthy behavior or to have health as a religion can be regarded as unhealthy behavior.

The conclusion in the paper suggest that the personal trainer is part of the healthism and fulfill some requirements to have health as a religion. But there is still a negative attitude towards taking health as a religion and prioritize health first. This can be explained on the basis that it is not socially acceptable yet to have health as a religion perhaps because it is such a new phenomenon.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract:

The interest in this empirical study aims at assessment, more precisely feedback as part of ordinary activities within hairdressing education. The study investigates feedback practices related to assessment of knowing during production, with focus on communication between student and teacher. Communication is regarded as interactively constructed and is investigated through a multimodal social semiotic perspective which implies studying verbal as well as nonverbal resources in meaning making. Speech and body movements are not subordinate to each other and are studied as contributing in communication on their own terms.

Video observations were used to investigate feedback practices in the hairdressing classroom, during a couple of lessons when last year’s students received customers for various treatments. From one hour recording, a selection was made showing communication between student and teacher with joint focus of attention during production. The selection is based on the assumption of feedback as interactively constructed and represented in a multimodal way.

The analysis of the feedback practice shows a multifaceted result, since each interaction between a student and a teacher is unique. Nevertheless, a recurrent pattern of feedback construction could be discerned. Three important functions of feedback were distinguished, that of control, instruction and evaluation. Furthermore, these functions interact in temporal processes of cycles and loops. The core of feedback practice is found within the loop, where questions and wonders from the student are brought into a joint investigation.
