The Swedish Comics Miracle: Imagining Future in Swedish Comics Anthologies2015Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Since the beginning of the 21st century the Swedish comics field has expanded significantly. Today comics and graphic novels are influential in the public cultural debate. Albums and books are sold in bookstores, reviewed in the cultural fora and get a lot of attention in all kinds of media. Young people create visual stories and some of them are political, while other are more epic. Both categories contain examples that address questions about the future.

Many of these comics are published in Swedish anthologies, such as Galago, which has existed as a forum for alternative comics since 1980. Started by a collective of comics artists, it has been bought and sold several times. Still it has produced some of the most artistic Swedish comics ever. Another creative collective in the comic field in Sweden is Dotterbolaget (The Subsidiary, but in Swedish literally meaning The Daughter Company), which published an anthology with the same name in 2009. Between 2011 and 2014 Utopi Magasin published mainly Swedish comics with epic ambitions and character. The comics field in Sweden is expanding, and the phenomenon has been paid attention to abroad. Since 2001 C’est Bon Anthology presents Swedish comics artist to an international audience four times a year. More recent additions are From the Shadow of the Northern Lights I and II, containing comics by artists from the alternative scene in Sweden. Examples of comics creators in these anthologies are Sara Granér, Lotta Sjöberg, Liv Strömquist, Mattias Elftorp and Mats Jonsson.

The paper analyses a sample of comics assembled from these anthologies, and discusses how they explore the idea of the future. We argue that many of these comics problematise visions of the future through a critical perspective on the neoliberal ideology in the Swedish debate and society. The criticisms are often based on a gender and class analysis. Different kinds of humour, such as irony, satire and black comedy, are important strategies in the visual as well as the verbal narratives. Deterrent and alternative visualizations of the future are presented with a humorous twist, sometimes by telling one version in words and another in images. The paper describes and analyses the visual and verbal narratives, how the mise en scène is designed in the single panels and how visual and verbal conventions are used (Groensteen 1999 and Kukkonen 2013).

    Abstract [en]

In Sweden, publication of original feminist comics started in the 1970s and increased during the following decade. This article describes and analyses the Swedish feminist comics published in the Swedish radical journals Kvinnobulletinen and Vi Mänskor, as well as in the Fnitter anthologies. These comics, representing radical feminism, played an important role as forums for debate in a time when feminist comics were considered avant-garde. The most prominent themes were, first, the body, love and sexualities and, second, the labour market and legal rights. The most frequent visual style was a black contour line style on a white background, recalling the comics of Claire Bretécher, Aline Kominsky-Crumb and Franziska Becker. Humour and satire, including irony, were used as strategies to challenge the patriarchy and to contest the prevailing idea that women have no sense of humour.

    Abstract [en]

This essay is from a student at the cultural science program in Karlstad University. The essay in Culture studies deals about the history use and about the cultural-historical values on buildings. The buildings are from a certain area called the neighborhood Almen and have in the past been threatening many times of demolition. The neighborhood Almen buildings survived a huge city fire back in the 19th century. Since then the buildings has been known as a memory and by the inhabitants and as the oldest part of the city left. Still the buildings have been threatened by demolishing. Tidhomlska garden is the only building that happened to demolished in the 20th century. It took to much space for a new building near by the statehouse. The three buildings that creates the neighborhood Almen is the Landshövdingegarden, Doctorsgarden and Flachska garden. The Landshövdingegarden has been residence for Varmlands first four county governors. It can be motivated for the personal historical value. Doctorsgarden has been home in the 19th century home to two private doctors. Flachska garden has also been home to Major Flach and in one of the buildings he created a solitude post office in the 19th century. The buildings describes the poor inhabitants in the first years how the lived and there for its social historical-value. It is a very important cultural heritage and can be used for the future in many different ways. It also has a very high cultural historical value to the society of the city.

Hur problematiseras jämställdhet?: En WPR-analys av jämställdhetsproblemet i skolan2017Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The theme of this thesis is gender equality, and especially gender equality in school. The study assumes a poststructuralist position and aims to demonstrate how gender equality is problematized in the world of education. Through studies of documents and interviews with people in the school world, the representations of the gender equality problem were brought to light. A WPR-perspective helped in the process of revealing how gender equality is “made”. The material were reduced to three categories: gender roles, ethnicity, and knowledge. The research questions were based on Carol Bacchis WPR-perspective: 1) what is the problem with gender equality? 2) what assumptions underlie the problem? 3) What is left unproblematic? and 4) what are the effects?

The result of the study shows that there are a lot of dichotomies in how gender equality is represented, but the primary representation is a matter of me/others. Through the problematization of boys (that is, students), culture (Swedish “equal” and non-Swedish, unequal “others”) and knowledge (unknowing, hence unequal other teachers) is the problem made someone else's and hence, ones own responsibility fails to represent the problem.

Söta Husfruar och Händiga Ingenjörer: Könsbilder i svensk leksaksreklam 1949 - 20092015Studentarbete andra termin, 12 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This paper will study United Arab Emirates commitment to the Convention on elimination of all form of discrimination against women (CEDAW). This will be done through an analysis of United Arab Emirates report to the CEDAW committee which will examine which of liberal- radical- or socialist feminist is prevailing in their report. The paper will then continue to examine their reservations of articles 2(f) and 16 of the convention, that contains the object and purpose of the convention, in relation to their report and how the situation is in the country. This is to examine how truthful and committed the United Arab Emirates are in CEDAW report.

This study will use a descriptive analysis with idea critical approach, along with ideal types as an analytical tool. The ideal types that will be used are distinctions of liberal- radical- and socialist feminism. This study shows that United Arab Emirates have a predominant liberal feminist distinction. The analysis of their reservations to the two articles in relation to the report and to the situation in the country shows that United Arab Emirates are not entirely forthcoming in their report.

Explaining the Third Reich: Swedish students' causal reasoning about the Nazi seizure of power in Germany2018Ingår i: Curriculum Journal, ISSN 0958-5176, E-ISSN 1469-3704, Vol. 29, nr 1, s. 60-76Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The topic of this study is how Swedish students aged 15-16 use causal reasoning in history when given a high-stakes task about explaining a historically significant event, the rise of the Nazi regime in Germany. The study is based on student texts from the Swedish national test in history. The student texts are mainly analysed with regards to how many, and what kinds of, causal factors are used by the students. The study finds that while most students are able to combine agents and situational factors in their explanations, the explanations show a recurring theme of combining a generic sense of economic crisis with Hitler and the German people as the important agents, to the detriment of other causes that could open up for different interpretations of why the Nazi regime came to power. To counteract this, the study suggests increased emphasis on some contextual factors in teaching practices.

Teaching and Learning Historical Explanation: Teacher and Student Cases from Lower and Upper Secondary History2020Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate and analyse how teachers and students understand the concept of historical explanation in the context of classroom teaching practices. The thesis is made up of four studies that investigate different aspects of understanding, focusing on either teacher or student understanding as expressed in words and actions.

The different studies employ differing methods, including classroom observations, interviews with teachers, and analysis of student answers to prompts intended for assessment. The studies include cases from both lower and upper secondary school in Sweden. The four studies provide empirical results that are presented in each individual study, and furthermore subjected to an aggregated analysis in order to find patterns of commonality. The aggregated analysis draws upon Rüsen's theory of historical knowledge, as well as a progression model for historical explanation based on results from previous research.

The results of the study show a clear difference between lower and upper secondary school in how students at each stage construct historical explanations, indicating differing expectations of what students are supposed to do with explanations in each stage. Teachers' practices are more varied: while a majority of the included teachers manifest a disciplinary understanding of historical explanation, in line with previous research about historical explanation in educational contexts, other approaches with other emphases are also present. These include an emphasis of learning explanations as sets of facts, as well as approaches that aim for making the knowledge of historical explanation useful outside of the history subject. Examples of such aims found in the study are to enhance empathetic understanding of other people, and helping students to orient themselves in relation to present-day issues.

    Abstract [en]

Historically, Christianity has been seen as a religion based on texts. However, many modern scholars claim that the practice of Christianity is at least as important as the holy texts. To see if this is the case, this study sought to examine whether church practice contributes to the making of the sacred, defined here from Mary Douglas's theory that the holy is something which is pure, whole and complete, unlike the impure, which is an anomaly, often separate, broken or divided.

This was examined by studying the actual practices relating to the bread and the wine in one of Christianity's most central rites, the Eucharist. The empirical material is based on observations and semi-structured interviews on the handling of the bread and wine before and after communion in five different church communities. However, the focus is on the Evangelical Lutheran Swedish Church, where two different congregations were studied.

The study takes as its point of departure Robert Orsis’ theory according to which holiness is created in a dynamic exchange between the practice of individuals and those of hierarchies. According to the present study this appears to be true, although the empirical material is too small to draw firm conclusions. In the churches investigated a variety of actors contribute to the creation of sacredness. Some practices seem to be the same throughout the different communities and parishes studied, for example preserving purity by covering the bread and wine, or by throwing away pieces of the already consecrated bread. Some individuals also created their own personal rituals, like not chewing the bread during the Eucharist, or covering their mouths after having received the bread to prevent the body of Christ from being spat out. It also appears that the wine is always handled with greater respect than the bread. According to Mary Douglas, this may have to do with the possibility of both sacrilising and defiling which rests in bodily fluids.

This essay shows that persons in different roles act independently and in different ways to create and maintain the holiness of the bread and wine. In churches with distinct confessional texts, as in the Catholic Church, practices are more often based on dogmas, while individuals in the congregations lacking rules for handling the bread an wine, as in the parishes of the Swedish Church, act more as they themselves think is right. Also here their actions seem to follow Mary Douglas's theory of preserving the wholeness and purity of the holy.

According to the study, the creation of sacredness seems to be just as possible for lay people as for specialists. This means that the Church in this way actually distributes the power to establish the sacred, which may contribute to preserving a community-promoting democratic process. This conclusion is reinforced by the fact that some of the congregations studied had created practices for ensuring sacrality which put fellowship before the power of the Words of Institution.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study is an examination of how a music education that is run by a NGO, Non Governmental Organisation, in South Africa works. The organisation Arkwork for Art NPC, and their artistic programme Access Music Project, AMP, based in Grahamstown in Eastern Cape province, works as an case study. This study shows what different opportunities and challenges are of the work with the project and describes who the young participants enrolled in the project are and how they experience the music education. Further more this work explore the relationship between music education and social justice.

Information was gathered through qualitative semi-structured interviews with the participants and project founder and leadership of the project. Partly information also was gathered through unstructured observations. The result shows that Arkwork for Art is filling an important gap where the government lack resources to offer music education for youth in marginalised communities. The organisation struggle with many things, most difficult for them is to get stable funding. AMP have many big future plans and want for instance to change the curriculum of music education in the future. My examination shows that the participants are very satisfied to be a part of AMP and that the project has an important role in their lifes and the community where they are based.

    Abstract [en]

This special issue contributes to a growing international dialogue on historical consciousness and its manifold implications for research and pedagogy in the area of history education. It questions general mind-sets that exert influence in the field and seeks to expand the boundaries of what scholars are currently doing. Holding the promise to build on historical consciousness’ general appeal, the aim is to find ways to tap into its full potential and to capture its workings as a social phenomenon that is basic to everyday human needs. Most scholars would agree that people’s understandings of the past, or rather of history’s workings, strongly impact individuals’ ability to navigate the world and to orient themselves temporally. Yet when it comes to being more precise in defining and operationalising historical consciousness, its elusive nature becomes apparent, making the whole process all the more challenging. Sometimes, a reliance on standard interpretations for conceptualizing historical consciousness contributes to such difficulties. Other times, it is a conflation of historical consciousness’ relevance and workings with other important concepts, such as historical thinking, without recognizing and questioning differences and tensions between them, that does so. Add to this the complexity of translating all that emerges into something pedagogically workable and of relevance to learners’ overall interests, then you have an entanglement that is hard to redress and that risks taking historical consciousness’ workings for granted

Liberalism and Revivalism: A Comparative Case Study of Liberal Ideology, Individualism, and Revivalism in Schleswig-Holstein and Värmland, ca 1860-19202013Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of History, ISSN 0346-8755, E-ISSN 1502-7716, Vol. 38, nr 2, s. 154-179Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Only rarely have the non-secular roots of modern political individualism been subject to study. In this article I forward the hypothesis that modern political individualism, as expressed by 19th-century liberalism, was a result of individualistic, low Church and nonconformist revivals to the same extent that it was a product of secular rationalism. The hypothesis is probed in a comparative case study of rural liberalism in two north European regions, Schleswig-Holstein (Germany) and Värmland (Sweden). I address three key requirements of the hypothesis: that the nonconformist revival movements in 18th and 19th-century northern Europe promoted an individualistic outlook among their followers; that individuality rooted in religious awakenings was congenial to liberal ideology; and that traits of non-secular individualism were incorporated with everyday liberal political discourse and practice.

    Local candidate lists: Historical artefacts or a novel phenomenon? A research note2015Ingår i: Party Politics, ISSN 1354-0688, E-ISSN 1460-3683, Vol. 21, nr 5, s. 813-820Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Using Sweden as an example, we propose the hypothesis that local candidate lists rest on a different rationale compared to national party lists, more specifically a rationality that has developed as a result of an altered relationship between the local and national levels and is expressed in terms of localism. The emergence of new local lists is most likely an effect of the challenges to the welfare state posed in the past 40 years. However, although local lists are essentially a recent phenomenon, our examples suggest that their existence can also be explained in terms of historical patterns of dissent from and resistance to state intervention at the local level.

Comparative research designs: Interdependence as a challenge and opportunity in regional studies2020Ingår i: Regional economic development and history / [ed] Marijn Molema & Sara Svensson, Abingdon: Routledge, 2020, s. 98--116Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

How can social science and historical approaches combine in order to enrich the regional studies theme? This chapter focuses on designs for small-N comparative research, specifically the problem of how to apply systematically structured synchronic and diachronic comparisons as a means to analyze interdependence. We hold that comparative sequence design (CSD) poses an important methodological option in that perspective. In contrast to standard research designs, such as cross-sectional design and development design (“historical case studies”), CSD allows for both systematic (i) cross-unit and cross-case comparisons as well as (ii) within-unit analyses. It (iii) opens up for the use of process-oriented models with a focus on explaining developmental outcomes among sub-national level units, and thereby (iv) facilitates analysis of both spatial, temporal and temporal-spatial interdependence among sub-national level units (regions). CSD provides a tool for examining e.g. policy-making and policy diffusion as dynamic, historically contingent processes; and, from the perspective of the historical disciplines, allows analysts to move beyond the limits of traditional case studies of regions and localities.

    Democratization and Secularization: Towards a Process-Oriented Model2017Ingår i: Politics, Religion & Ideology, ISSN 2156-7689, E-ISSN 2156-7697, Vol. 18, nr 2, s. 175-197Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The role of secularization remains underdeveloped in theoretical studies of democratization. We hold that the relation between the two processes is difficult to analyse by help of standard, cross-sectional analysis. We therefore propose a process-oriented model of democratization in relation to secularization. We suggest that these processes do not unfold in random patterns. Theoretically they follow one of four distinct paths: democratization may precede secularization, secularization may precede democratization, democratization may occur without secularization, and democratization and secularization may occur as parallel processes. The contrasts between our model and crosssectional analysis become particularly obvious when the first and the fourth paths are considered in historical perspective: secularism (as an independent variable) is in both cases positively correlated with democracy (the dependent variable), even though these processes are reversed temporally (path one), or even occur simultaneously (path four). The model therefore demonstrates the need for further research on the relation between democratization and secularization. This includes the problem of why certain states tend to follow certain paths; whether countries may shift between paths; the problem of democratic consolidation; the role of stateformation to secularization and democratization; and the contextual dependence of the model, including the relation between institutions and values/behaviour

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Despite claims that planners' attitude towards public participation has not always been enthusiastic, there have been genuine attempts to devolve powers through participation—although seldom with success. In this paper we discuss several major attempts to improve participation in Sweden including case studies of e-participation. Despite great expectations on information and communication technologies, Swedish experience indicates that the status quo between planners and people remains.

In the Midst of the Global Sub-national: Rationalities, Technologies and Subjects In Swedish Regional Governance2014Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The ’global’ is often articulated as a particular level of space situated at the highest tier of a hierarchical order that has its other extreme point in the local. In such models globalization becomes a process, or indeed a force, that shapes and reconfigures other levels of space such as the national. What is more, integrated with the conceptualization of the ‘global’ as a level of space is often a view of globalization as a phenomenon primarily constituted by a range of different flows of for instance immigrants, capital and information (Castells, 1999; Holton, 2005, Held & McGrew, 2007).

This paper departs from a different understanding as it investigates how globalization is (re)produced in a particular form of space. Here, space is understood to be relational (Massey, 1994; 2005), meaning that I do not consider the ‘global’ to be a level on its own, rather I theorize the global, like all other forms of spaces, as produced through a myriad of social practices and relations.

Given such an understanding of globalization an interesting development the last decades has been a resurgence of sub-national regions. In the literature this newfound focus on regions within national polities is often articulated as means for competitiveness (Säll, 2012; Keating, 2003). All around the world regions are engaged in a large number of practices that aims to foster competitiveness and growth in order to deal with the perceived challenges of globalization. Hence, so-called clusters, innovation systems and programs for variegated forms of creativity are now everyday features of sub-national regional governance (Florida, 2012; Porter, 1998).

Therefore, rather than studying national space, in this paper I show how sub-national regional governance is an important site for discursive production of globalization. Instead of focusing on how different flows affects individual regions, the priority here is on the regime of practice that is sub-national regional governance in a wider sense. Utilizing a governmentality approach (Miller & Rose, 2008; Dean, 2010) the paper investigates a corpus of documents pertaining to Swedish regional governance using a mixed set of techniques from Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Post-Structuralist Discourse Theory (PDT). The results highlight how the ‘global’ rationality is (re)produced in the Swedish case and how this together with a number of governmental technologies produces desired and undesired regional subjects.

    Abstract [en]

This paper studies the discursive construction of globalization as a particular form of rationale in sub-national regional development. As such it departs from an understanding of space as relational and holds that globalization can be theorized as a reconfiguration of the spatial aspects of our social relations (Massey, 1994, 2005). Therefore, it is argued here, to investigate globalization is to investigate aspects of the multiplicity of social relations that (re)produces the phenomenon. Using a governmentality framework (Dean, 2010) I trace how globalization is discursively (re)produced within a particular regime of practice, namely regional development in Sweden. Adopting such a framework and relating it to this instance of space enables novel interpretations of how globalization not only legitimizes certain practices but also how this in turn (re)articulates the concept, giving it specific meanings and features. At the same time it is shown here how this articulation produces and delimits social actors within the regions, illustrating concrete effects of globalization.

Measuring Innovation Space: Numerical Devices as Governmental Technologies2016Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Throughout Europe sub-national regions are restructured and reformed in line with the EU2020 policy program which dictates a clear focus on growth through the fostering of innovation and entrepreneurship. While this process is articulated differently in separate contexts it has a range of common features. One of these is the wide spread adoption of calculative devices and measurement tools that are installed as transparent means for governing and monitoring the ongoing strive for growth and innovation. In this paper it is argued that the contemporary practices and discourses tied to regional development in Europe and beyond can be described as the production of new innovation spaces. Intrinsic to this production is a vast register of indices, rankings and award ceremonies directed at finding and monitoring the most innovative regions, projects and policies which in turn facilitates the grounds for notions of policy learning and so called best practice. By mobilizing the growing literature on the sociological functions of numbers as well as the scholarship on the politics and power of calculative practices in governance, the paper critically examines important aspects of the installment of innovation spaces. More specifically, by following the manufacturing and installment of an index designed to measure innovative capacity of Swedish regions, the paper shows how such governmental technologies helps to legitimize and depoliticize the production of innovation spaces. The index has been released in three iterations since 2011 with an explicit focus on ranking for the sake of policy learning. It is produced by RegLab, an organization comprised of the 21 regions in Sweden as well as a number of important state agencies, and its deployment and influence on regional policy is traced here by focusing on the documentation and detailed description of the numerical calculations and data sources that are assembled together in order to produce the composite measures used to asses the innovative capacity of all regions. Moreover the influence of the index and its manifest expressions in regional policy is illustrated by examining some of the Regional Development Strategies (RDS).

Measuring innovation space: Numerical devices as governmental technologies2019Ingår i: Territory, Politics, Governance, ISSN 2162-2671, s. 1-18Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The context of sub-national regions in Sweden is used to illustrate how rankings and indices operate as part of contemporary governing of space and territory. An empirical study of an index designed to measure the innovative capacity of these regions is presented to illustrate how such numerical devices are invoked as part of policy by providing policy-makers with a means to define reality, guide strategy and legitimize certain actions. Drawing on both the literatures of governmentality and the sociology of quantification, the construction of the index and its deployment into politics are examined with a focus on the performative aspects of mobilizing such technologies in governing. The analysis shows how an instrument intended as a learning tool for regions and regional policy-makers turns into a device through which power operates in the processes of marking, grading and commensuration, in turn reinforcing established orders among the regions. Following from this, it is found that such numerical devices are important governmental technologies that help relay and institute political rationalities. Therefore, they should be considered more carefully in any analysis of discourses of regional development, which is a field permeated by rationalities of innovation and competitiveness.

Producing Globalization:: Legitimizing Regional Governance Regimes2014Ingår i: Diverse Regions: Building Resilient Communities and Territories / [ed] Elizabeth Mitchell, Regional Studies Association , 2014, s. 103-Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper explores the discursive construction of globalization as a particular form of rationale in sub-national regional development.

Here I depart from an instance of space that has not often been used as a basis for understanding articulations of globalization, namely the sub-national region. Using a governmentality framework (Dean, 2010) I trace how globalization is discursively (re)produced within regional governance in Sweden, focusing on the practices, technologies and rationalities that constitutes this regime.

More specifically, in terms of empiric material, I analyze a broad corpus of Regional Governance Documents (RGD) as well as the wide production of reports that was the outcome of Sweden’s so called Globalization Council. Methodologically the analysis is situated within the aforementioned framework of governmentality studies (Dean, 2010; Miller & Rose, 2008). This framework is then used as a point of departure for a form of discourse analysis that combines concepts from both Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Post-structuralist Discourse Theory (PDT).

This alignment of theory, methodology and empiric material enables me to produce three main areas of findings. First, by illustrating how globalization is framed in the regional governance documents as intertwined with notions of competition, growth and competitiveness I am able to demonstrate how this discursively legitimizes and fosters a certain range of practices. A particularly salient finding is how the documents contain articulations of a perspective of globalization that renders the phenomenon as more or less a natural force that is unavoidable and unchangeable. Second, in terms of relational space the discursive legitimization also contributes to the production of globalization in other forms of space, hence reinforcing general neo-liberal traits of the phenomenon that extends to regions, nations and continents around the world. Third, the paper also shows how the methodological framework that is used proved particularly fruitful in this case. Therefore, some time is spent reflecting on the possible benefits of combining CDA, PDT and governmentality and I argue that such multi-perspectival approaches are needed to illustrate the complex relay system of practices that produces globalization and regional governance.
