Samordning, effektivisering og forenkling: En sosiologisk analyse av begrunnelser for digitaliseringsprosesser i moderniseringen av norsk offentlig forvaltning2016Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the arguments used by politicians and civil servants to justify the implementation of digitalisation processes to modernise and reform the Norwegian public sector. The research questions are “What arguments are used within the Norwegian public administration to justify the implementation of digitalisation processes?” and “How can these arguments be understood in relation to ideas about modernisation and ongoing reforms within the administration more generally?”.

Three studies of digitalisation and reform processes within the Norwegian public administration have been carried out to answer the research questions. The first study is of the Minside public electronic communications service from its inception in 2004 until the service was discontinued in 2012. The second study is an analysis of governmental documents on the role and importance of digitalisation reforms in the Norwegian public sector from the mid-1980’s to today. The third outlines how digitalisation is related to a reform process within the public sector, widely referred to as New Public Management (NPM).

The analysis shows that justifications for the implementation of Minside and for digitalisation in the Norwegian public administration are generally focused on the simplification, coordination and rationalisation of the public sector. These justifications are closely connected to key normative ideas of NPM on how and why modernisation and reform processes should be carried out within the public sector in general.

Despite high expectations, many digitalisation and electronic service implementations aimed at the population do not achieve the effects expected. This does not, however, appear to have had any impact upon these seemingly deeply entrenched expectations. They continue to be as widely held and as high as they have always been, despite widespread evidence to the contrary.

The Intersection of Gender, Race and Cultural Boundaries or Why is Computer Science in Malaysia dominated by Women?2009In: Social Studies of Science, ISSN 0306-3127, E-ISSN 1460-3659, Vol. 39, no 6, p. 885-907Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper reports an investigation on how and why computer science in Malaysia is dominated by women. Inspired by recent critical interventions in gender and technology studies, the paper aims to open up more culturally situated analyses of the gendering of technology or the technology of gendering, with the Malaysian case exemplifying the core of the argument. The paper argues along four different strands of critical thought: (1) a critique of the analytical asymmetry in the process of co-production in gender and technology studies; (2) a critique of a western bias in gender and technology studies, advocating more context sensitivity and focus on the cultural embeddedness of gender and technology relations; (3) a critique that pays more attention to spatial practices and body politics in regard to race, class and gender in relation to technology; and (4) a critique of 'western' positional notions of gender configurations that opens up for more fluid constructions of gender identity, including the many crossovers between relational and positional definitions of femininity and masculinity.

Mätning av generell skam: Raschanalys av Retzingers fysiska markörer och utmanande beteenden2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this paper I have tried to construct a composite measure of shame, based on the research of Thomas Scheff. I have created 14 statements based on Suzanne Retzingers research about physical cues for shame and the resulting challenging behaviors. Several scientists have emphasizedthe importance of constructing a measure of shame. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to try to find out if it is possible to measure shame quantitatively or not.

The statements were used in a survey and were administrated at Karlstad University. In total,180 respondents participated in the study, but four respondents were excluded due to lack of standardization. By using the polytomous rasch model, and the software RUMM 2030, data from 176 respondents, of whom 124 were female and 52 were male, were analyzed.

The result showed that the instrument not only measures shame (but is rather multidimensional), or in the best case different types of shame, and that the statements do not work invariantly across subgroups (differential item functioning). It also showed that the instrument as a whole had a poor fit to the rasch model. My conclusion is that it is possible to construct an instrument to measure shame based on Scheffs theory. But it will require more work and revisions than what can be done within this course, in order to reach an invariant measure.

What does class origin and education mean for the capabilities of agency and voice?2015In: British Journal of Sociology of Education, ISSN 0142-5692, E-ISSN 1465-3346, Vol. 36, no 2, p. 291-312Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article investigates the relationship between class origin, educational attainment, and the capabilities of agency and voice. The main objectives are to investigate how class origin and educational attainment interact and to consider whether higher education reduces any structural inequalities in the social aspects of life. A longitudinal approach is applied, using a national survey of 1058 Swedish young people, controlling for baseline values of agency and voice. The empirical analysis reveals an association between class origin and agency and voice. University education proves to be of central importance for the capabilities of agency and voice; however, this varied for young people with different class origin. Young people from manual working-class backgrounds benefit from higher education, while no significant result was found for young people with white-collar parents. The results indicate that higher education reduces structural differences in capabilities central for social participation.

Ett existentiellt limbotillstånd: Livsberättelser från en utvisningsdömd och frihetsberövad asylsökande2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Emotional labour and harbouring strategies done by health care professionals.2014Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper explores how health care workers in both somatic and mental health care organizations deal with their emotional labour. Very little research is done in Sweden on emotional labour among health care workers and their emotional well-being. The point of departure is the emotion management perspective formulated by Hochschild (2003), and Bolton´s (2000; 2005) further development. They indicate that the individual worker is capable of using different emotional management strategies depending of contextual situations. Referring to Bolton we argue that the rules of ethics, as well as, personal motivation affect management strategies. The empirical material is based on two narrative interview studies, one with medical staff in somatic care, and the other with staff in psychiatry. The objective is to identify how the health care workers handle emotions and, especially, how they are doing containing or “harboring work” (Olsson 2006) in relation to different groups of patients. Is there a difference in the harboring work arising from diverse emotional weight of the work, i.e. is there a difference in the workers’ harboring emotions if the patient has a less serious or severe state of ill-health? Is there a noticeable difference in the professionals’ harboring work if the patient has more bodily oriented problems or mental ones? Our aim is to understand how the emotional attunement works both emotionally and intellectually in different work situations, as well as, the emotional work/strategies.

Olydnad som motstånd: Utomparlamentariska rörelsers rättsliga strategier och verktyg för hållbar aktivism2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The study aims to investigate how activists using civil disobedience strategically use the legal system to legitimize and raise awareness of their causes. The study will also examine how individual activists are affected and how they create long-term and sustainable activism. The purpose of the study is to gain a deeper understanding of how activists relate to the legal system, as well as to explore deeper understanding of the individual impact of the activists. The methodology underlying the study is a qualitative interview where four informants have been interviewed about their experiences and impressions of legal systems as individual influences. The theories that form the basis for the study are legal strategies by Thomas Mathiesen, legal pluralism by Håkan Gustafsson and Stellan Vinthagen with additions from Jan Svanberg and Stellan Vinthagens theory about normative regulation. The study's results show that there are several tools that activists can use to create better conditions for long-term and sustainable activism. It appears that the legal system and the extraparliamentary movements have different ways of interpreting the laws and the extra-parliamentary movements rely their pluralistic normative formation upon historical absolutions. Activists form well-planned legal strategies to achieve their long-term goals. Then the purpose of working emancipatory is to morally disconnect the monistic definition of the legal system and the hegemonic social norms. It is important to create solidarity between each other and provide opportunities for dealing with the possible traumatic situations that arise in the context of action.

    Abstract [en]

In Sweden, we become more and more centralized, and today it is more than half of the population living in the metropolitan areas. This urbanization, with young people and young adults at the forefront, makes municipalities, especially in the county of Värmland, depleted and drastically reduced in population. The purpose of this study is to capture the experiences of young adults who oppose urbanization and have chosen to stay in an out-migration town. The focus for the study is young adults’ experiences of life in these towns, their future opportunities and how they relate to the stay/move-question. The study is based on interviews with five people between 18-29 years, all of whom grew up and today live in Hagfors. The statements and stories of the interviewed have been analyzed in relation to the theoretical reasoning cultural release, urbanism and reference group. The result shows, among other things, that young adults in Hagfors like living in Hagfors, but at the same time expresses that they want to move. Life in Hagfors is perceived as calm and boring, and they feel that they should see something else, see other places, and become something else. Choosing to stay in Hagfors is to be perceived as a boring person - one who is “content”. The young adults I have met do not want to be perceived in that way, and expresses a dream for a life with more possibilities, something that they see as possible outside of Hagfors. The ones I´ve interviewed who have lived outside of Hagfors but have chosen to move back, they are more certain that they like Hagfors and the life they see is possible there. My opinion is that they’ve become aware of that the grass isn't greener on the other side of the pence, and that knowledge legitimizes their choice to live in Hagfors without being seen as someone who is “content”.

Tv-seriers betydelse i människors vardag: En kvalitativ studie av unga människors Tv-tittande/A qualititative study of young people’s TV viewing2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Dynamics of interaction: how Israeli authorities succeeded in disrupting and containing the 2011 Freedom Flotilla to Gaza2019In: Interface: a journal for and about social movements, Vol. 11, no 1, p. 14-36Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Groups working for change are met with many types of responses. Most attention has been given to reactions of overt repression or support for movements and campaigns. However, there exist a range of other pacifying responses, such as ignoring, placating, devaluing, disrupting and misinforming. These subtler forms of obstructions pose a different type of challenge and require different types of counter-strategies than violent repression.

This article introduces a framework focusing on four different types of responses – 1. Validating, 2. Discrediting and attacking, 3. Manipulative and 4. Non-interfering. This model can be applied to analyse responses to all types of nonviolent campaigns from opponents and so-called third parties. The Freedom Flotilla to Gaza in 2011 serves as a case study to present the model and to analyse how the Israeli government and its supporters successfully disrupted and contained this flotilla with much more subtle means than the 2010 flotilla where nine activists were killed.

Gender differences in time pressure and health among journalists2015In: Time & Society, ISSN 0961-463X, E-ISSN 1461-7463, Vol. 24, no 2, p. 244-271Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim was to examine how different aspects of time pressure are associatedwith health and gender. The study is based on data collected by cross-sectionalquestionnaire from 153 female and 167 male journalists at three editorial officesin Sweden. Spearman correlation coefficients by gender were analysed betweensix different time pressure variables and seven health measures. For womenthree health indicators correlated significantly with time pressure expressed as''short of time for reflection''. For men, health as expressed by four indicatorswas primarily related to ''lack of efficiency''. Severe time pressure correlatedespecially highly with stress but only to an almost negligible degree with neckand shoulder symptoms. Our analysis showed that the relation between timepressure and health differs between women and men and that time pressure canbe interpreted in several different ways.

    Abstract [en]

The general aim of this study is to investigate whether the way that Swedish politicians speak about and describe society (mainly Swedish society) has changed over time. The perspective of the study is a social-constructive one, which means that the way that politicians speak about society is viewed as a part of the constant construction of our consciousness of, and thereby of, society. The examined material is five Swedish right-wing statements of government policy, issued in 1976, 1979, 1991, 2006 and 2010. The method used to analyze these statements is a form of quantitative content analysis.

Concretely the aim of the study is to longitudinally examine if there are differences regarding which ideological ideas that are dominant in the analyzed statements of government policy. This is done with the help of two different forms of content analysis. Comparisons are made both regarding the occurrence of certain ideologically charged terms in the different statements, and regarding the share of neoright (libertarian- and neoconservative) as opposed to alternative, mainly social-liberal ideas expressed in the material.

The analysis shows that measured in this way there are considerable differences in ideological orientation between the different statements of government policy. The strongest result, which can also be seen as a confirmation of the results of several previous studies, is one which points to a swing to the right between 1979 and 1991. The analysis also shows that since 1991 the share of neoright ideas has remained relatively stable, but that a gradual shift within the neoright spectrum of ideas has taken place since then, a shift from markedly libertarian ideas in 1991, to libertarian with an element of neoconservative, almost nationalist ideas in 2010.

Omvälvning eller invävning: En sociologisk undersökning av Feministiskt Initiativs partiprogram2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This master degree paper is a sociological investigation of the political platform from the Swedish party Feministiskt Initiativ (feminist initiative). The paper is made with an discourse theoretical influence, aiming to explore the views of the world that are constructed in the platform, in terms of overturning and integrating, in regards of political discourses and the human as a being. The papers handle the research questions 1) What pictures of reality is constructed in the political platform regarding a) politics, b) the world, c) human equality? 2) How could those constructions be understood in terms of overturning or integration? Besides that does the paper aim to trace the outline of a role model for the equal person in the platform: how should one be, and who should one strive to be, in order to get the authority to speak on equality issues?

The main focus for this paper is the opening text in the platform, which serves as the foundation of this investigation. The rest of the program, form as well as content, serves as supporting and a way to deepen the analysis made from the introductory text.

The view of the world as it appears in the platform has been analysed with mainly sociological theories regarding identity, gender, power and politics. According to those views is the question raised whether the view of the world in the platform can be seen as a way to integrate new perspective in the current order of things, or rather to overturn the same.

The findings indicate that there is not one uniform view of the world in the platform, but several, which also can be found in the feministic academic debate. There are however a main focus on gender as political subject, and a strong connection to an emancipatory and liberating tradition. There is also a tendency in the platform to stress the importance of formal knowledge and education as tools to see trough discriminating structures, to set the human potential free. My analysis point to an outline of the equal person as a literate and cultivated person, and that it is that kind of person that the platform recommends us to integrate in the established political arenas. Lastly, the paper points towards several directions for further investigation, mainly about how negotiations regarding views of the world and spokes position are made in a political movement, in its wider sense.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to shed light on the phenomenon healthism based on personal trainers’ perspective. Previous research has shown that healthism is a rapidly growing phenomenon in the western world.

Based on the purpose, three issues were created; How do personal trainers discuss their view as a role model in health? How does health awareness appear in everyday life for personal trainer? What does a healthy lifestyle for personal trainer mean?

The study used the qualitative method and consisted of four interviews. The informants were educated and worked in some form of personal training.

A part of the the results show that personal trainers consider themselves as role models and representatives of health. This leads to the proper behavior must occur in an environment where clients or potential clients can keep track of one. Not having the right behavior in such situations can result in being considered as an extremely unreliable personal trainer. Another result shows that a healthy lifestyle is important for personal trainers but it is equally important not to have too healthy behavior either. A too healthy behavior or to have health as a religion can be regarded as unhealthy behavior.

The conclusion in the paper suggest that the personal trainer is part of the healthism and fulfill some requirements to have health as a religion. But there is still a negative attitude towards taking health as a religion and prioritize health first. This can be explained on the basis that it is not socially acceptable yet to have health as a religion perhaps because it is such a new phenomenon.
