The cultural policies of minor cinema practices: The Swedish film workshop during it's first years 1973–762011In: Studies in European Cinema, ISSN 1741-1548, E-ISSN 2040-0594, Vol. 8, no 3, p. 183-194Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The essay is a description of the first years of the Stockholm film workshop, Filmverkstan, founded in 1973. The activities of the workshop are put into the framework of the new cultural policies of Sweden and the question of cultural democracy, as well as alternative ways of producing and distributing film. The output of the early years is set into generic and film historical contexts, connected to the problems of amateur film and minor cinema. One key topic is how this new venue for alternative film production was able to function together with other agencies, for example, the Swedish Film Institute, the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation and the FilmCentre coop. The essay offers an analysis of the implementation of state cultural policies within an alternative production context, the avant-garde and the alternative as a modified state apparatus.

The Willful Vegetarian: A Feminist Analysis of the Novel The Vegetarian2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this essay I argue for how the character Yeong-Hye in Han Kang’s novel The Vegetarian can be read as ‘willful’. I also consider how this willfulness relates to her negotiation of femininity and sexuality, as well as examine the ways in which she can or can not be read as an ‘intelligible subject’. I conclude that she can be read as a willful character partly because she persists in her vegetarianism, despite her family’s disapproval. I argue that her vegetarianism could also be read as a hunger strike, which Sara Ahmed (2014) names as one of the most willful acts of all. In addition, I conclude that Yeong-Hye repeatedly ‘fails’ to perform an intelligent gender in accordance with the ‘heterosexual matrix’, termed so by Judith Butler (1990), and therefore I read her femininity as willful. Her negotiation of sexuality I read as willful seeing as she resists conforming to the dogmas of what Adrienne Rich (1980) calls ‘compulsory heterosexuality’. I also argue that Yeong-Hye’s status as a willful subject renders the position of ‘intelligible subject’ unattainable for her.

Kunskapens yttersta kant: Gud och det givna i K.E.Løgstrups Metafysik2010Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The dissertation makes an interpretation of The Metaphysics, four books written by the Danish theologian and philosopher K.E. Løgstrup at the end of his life. In a systematic way the dissertation describes a coherent vision of Løgstrups main theories in the books taken together as a whole. By a tripartite model the alalysis shows how the theories settle up with a worldview coined by the thinking of the theory of knowledge from Kant.

From the renaissance until our days a broad movement fashions the western culture in a modern way. In a philosophical perspective the kantian "Copernican turn" is a decisive shift. An ontological and metaphysical thinking leaves room for scientific and epistemological attitudes.

In this process the role of theology changes. Kant's criticism of metaphysics shows the practical reason and not the theoretical as the context of the question of God. Schleiermacher outlines a place for theology and God in the area of feeling. In similar manner different sorts of modern theology in many diverse ways underpin the faith of God as a foundationalism.

The criticism of the epistemological thinking is radicalised by Marin Heidegger's theories of time and historicity. During the 20th century Heidegger's philosophy has a great impact on theology. In the analysis Heidegger is a second focus beside Kant and the problem of the time leads Løgstrup to a thinking of creation.

The theology of Løgstrup puts fundamental questions at the utmost edge of knowledge. His thinking does not give the religion a room inside the modern paradigm but tries by phenomenological analysis to destabilize the modern grip on reality. The question of Kant is: How can we surely know? The problem of Løgstrup is instead: How can theology interpret the fundamental instability of knowledge? It means that God is not understood in a paradigm coined by theory of knowledge. The dissertation describes how theology must first try to find the edge where the understanding turns and apprehends its state of "wounded" understanding. By the Metaphysics Løgstrups theories of the sensation, reason and annihilation articulates wounds and instances that makes a humiliate understanding and sheds light on the question of God.,

Dr Ambedkar's Legacy: Indian Buddhism in Contemporary Varanasi2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

During the 1950’s the Dalit leader Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar managed to revive Buddhism in India as a protest against, what he considered to be, injustices towards low-caste people that were said to be caused by Hinduism. This study was done to investigate the presence of Ambedkar Buddhism in the holy city of Hinduism Varanasi. By interviewing people and field studies it was possible to see how Ambedkar Buddhism has been transferred to contemporary Varanasi, how the religion is being practices and whether it is a religious or political movement. The results that were found were that Ambedkar Buddhism has existed ever since 1956 when Ambedkar held mass conversions in Maharashtra and that the religion has been kept and transferred within families to today’s generations of Varanasi and also partially because of academics associated with Banaras Hindu University who have move to the city for work and studies. Ambedkar Buddhists practice their religion like most Buddhists with the exception of not having a tradition of monasticism. The movement is both religious and political as it was started as a protest against Hinduism, which is also both religious and political according to Ambedkar. The movement has prospered because it seems that Buddhism is a beneficial way for Dalits to gain power and success.

Cultural memory between the national and the transnational2011In: Journal of Aesthetics and Culture, ISSN 2000-4214, Vol. 3Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study explores the dynamics of cultural memory against a transnational background. The paper offers a concise discussion of the concept of cultural memory as developed by Jan and Aleida Assmann and as qualified by the most recent scholarship. Focussing on aspects concerning practices of cultural memory, the analysis proceeds to examine a couple of decisive components of Romanias cultural identity. Over time, the arguments attempting to define this identity have drawn on strands of cultural memory that have defied strictly drawn borders: the Latin cultural connotations as embodied by the Romanian language and Eastern Orthodoxy. Mapping the convergence of these two strands within this particular illustration of cultural identity shows one way in which the concepts of cultural memory, of the national, and of the transnational can be applied to a concrete case

Hemsökelser: Gotiken i sex berättelser av Selma Lagerlöf2009Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The topic of this thesis is the gothic fiction of Selma Lagerlöf. Its primary purpose is to investigate how Lagerlöf's work can be understood in relation to the gothic genre; what particular themes, motifs and formal aspects appear when making this connection and how they can be interpreted, as well as which literary and cultural contexts become relevant. The study is based on close readings of six short stories that, in comparison, appear to be some of the most gloomy and horrific in her production: "Karln. En julsägen" (1891), "De fågelfrie", "Stenkumlet", "Riddardottern och havsmannen" (1892), "Spökhanden" (1898) and "Frid på jorden" (1917). The gothic was an important feature of the literature of the last decade of the nineteenth century, when Lagerlöf made her debut. Therefore one of the main purposes of this study is to highlight her as one of the key writers of gothic fiction in Sweden by the time. In this context the gothic might be considered as closely related to the currents of decadence and fin-de-siècle. However, the gothic continued to be an important element throughout Lagerlöf's production, and this is illustrated by the inclusion of a story from a later period among the primary sources.

The gothic genre can be defined by certain themes and motifs, but also by its narrative strategies. The analyses of the six stories show how themes and composition are used to create an atmosphere of fear and darkness, but also, more importantly, to create a sense of ambiguity. The study also discusses the relationship between the gothic and the fantastic and special attention is paid to aspects such as the hesitation concerning how to interpret the supernatural, as well as the fragmentary bodies and psyches of the stories. The main themes of the six stories can be summarized as dealing with the haunting and return of the past, as well as the fear associated with the transgression of limits - between fantasy and reality, the civilized and the primitive, life and death and self and other. Central to the argument in this study is das Unheimliche - the uncanny - a concept that links a certain kind of fear to uncertainty, doubles, ghostliness and haunting. Sigmund Freud has described it as a paradox, as something terrifyingly strange and yet familiar at the same time. The gothic reproduces the experience of reality expressed by this concept - a sense that the self is the source of horror and that identity is something highly unstable.
