Hopp eller förtvivlan?: En kvantitativ enkätundersökning i sociala medier om människors attityder till kommunikationen kring klimatförändringar.2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Value co-creation via smartphone applications2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to describe how value propositions can be seen as an operant resource in a wireless environment, for service providers’ opportunity to co-create value with their customers. To see how a service provider offer service in a wireless environment interviews have been conducted at Westra Wermlands Sparbank with the focus on service offered through a smartphone application. The findings in the empirical study was that the service provider does not have the opportunity to actively instruct its customers in a wireless environment since the majority of the customers get the smartphone application on their own without processing from the service provider. What the service provider therefore can do is to integrate its instructions into the smartphone application so it is easy to understand and to show the customers what possibilities they have when using it. Thereby the offered value proposition can be seen as an operant resource in a wireless environment. Moreover, the service provider gets the opportunity to co-create value with its customers.

Människan och Naturen i Mary Shelleys Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The main focus of this essay is to attempt to answer the questions of how Mary Shelley, in her novel Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus, portrays the relationship between man and nature, and how Frankensteins creature can serve as a starting point in a discussion of the term human.

The theories of ecocriticism - here described as the study of the relationship between human and nonhuman - and poshumanism, which contains the premisses for discussing this human, reveal many interesting things about the novel.

The scientific approach to the world, and by extension, nature, can in Shelleys novel be considered anthropocentric, which is portrayed as a damaging world-view. Attempts to discuss the concept of human reveals that any definition can be met with resistence and objections. Not all humans meet the criteria of a certain definition, and there may be other creatures that do. The conclusion here may be that the human simply cannot be defined properly.

Too Late for Snowman: Transhumanist Ideals in Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay attempts to study transhumanism and its role in the anthropogenic pandemic at the center of the novel, in order to show that transhumanist thought was a driving factor behind it. By looking at transhumanist concerns in the portrayed society, and the beliefs of Crake, one uncovers that Crake was able to exploit the desire for enhancement of humanity as a whole in order to achieve the ultimate transhumanist goal: the near-perfect and immortal posthuman Crakers. Analyzing the intentions behind the creation of the posthuman, and Snowman’s relationship to them, it becomes clear that the posthuman is a replacement of existing humanity, since the sought after qualities of the posthuman can only be attained through genetic engineering before birth and not by altering individual humans. I hope to have shown that the novel contains a warning about transhumanism and the potential misuse of science when one person think things through to its logical conclusion.

Antenarrative theory and method: A way to understand the relationship between policy and practice2012In: 25:th International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement, Malmö, Sweden 5-8 january 2012, 2012, p. 1-9Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Objectives Although researchers of today say that a change and development processes is to be considered a contextual process (Fullan 1991, 2000; Giacquinta 2006; McLaughlin 2000; Miles 2000; Seashore Louis 2000), the relationship between a policy text and it’s readers is still often based on an understanding of reading as something linear and monologic (Honan 2004). This structural understanding has implications for the way development work often is being implemented, since it privileges the policymaker: people are supposed to adapt to policy rather than vice versa (Ball 2006). Another way of relating to the relationship between policy and practice is to focus on the collective and nonlinear aspects of organizational life. One way to do this is to use the concept antenarrative (Boje 2010). This is an approach that offers opportunities to explore the dynamics of organizational communication, and the significance of this communication when it comes to tackle and carry through development, initiated by a policy text of any kind.[1]

In my presentation I will describe the theoretical as well as methodological concept antenarrative and illustrate the arguments using data from my thesis (Åstrand 2009).

Antenarrative – a theoretical and methodological framework The concept antenarrative is developed within the area of narrative organizational research, and the main point is that it pays attention to the many different kinds of meaning making storytelling that takes place in an organization, especially when some new policy is to be launched. In line with this view an organization is to be considered a”collective storytelling system (…)” (Boje 1991, p 1), or a”story telling space” (Boje, Rosile and Gardner 2004, p 7). In this story telling space several dynamics occurs: between the fulfillment (narrative) and unfulfillment (antenarrative) of a story (e.g. the interaction between consensus/non-consensus about what a new policy is about); between narratives, antenarratives and surrounding discourses (e.g. the way one policy on local level relates to/is related to another on a national level); between our inner, psychological needs of understanding what we are going thru and the story telling networking in the organization. The boundaries between these dynamics are permeable, although it often figures hierarchic and/or competitive relationships between them. Several stories with separate plots on the same event also often compete for space (ibid.).

Data sources The data used in the presentation derives from a thesis, När PBS kom till byn. Berättelser om erfarenheter av skolutveckling (Åstrand 2009). The thesis presented a study on different school actors’ narratives about how they had experienced a participation in a specific school development collaboration based at Karlstad University. In the study 46 interviews with different actors in the school organization - school politicians, executive directors, area directors, school-leaders, development managers/project leaders, pedagogue teams and individual teachers - were carried out. Official texts from the three school organizations (municipalities) participating in the collaboration was also studied.

Connection to the themes of the congress and the educational importance of antenarrative studies The aim of the thesis was to show how the carrying through of a new policy, in this case the specific school development model developed at Karlstad University, was received and reconstructed in three Swedish municipal settings. The results showed how the interviewees charged various ideas/policies with their own previous experiences and how this was done in discursive contexts that shape what is considered normal and evident. The participants’ interpretations and reconstructions of both development models prior to the one being studied, and of the national steering model, came to play important roles in how the specific model was received and reconstructed. Different interpretations of the model also led to tensions within and between different areas of the organizations. Tensions that can be described as dilemmas, implicated by an ongoing cacophony of policy voices, whose prescriptions pull on different directions. Directions not always visible/meaningful for the participants, which meant that a policy can become a tool in line with new discursive narratives of education, regardless the intensions formulated in the context of policy text construction.

So, if the point is that we need interaction on all levels in order to make young people’s education enduring and meaningful, one thing we need to do is to understand how the interplay between policy, research and practice in education works, which also includes the relation between the researcher and the ones being researched. Within the area of school development research, it seems to me that the researcher and the policymaker sometimes coincide. A circumstance which, especially from a more critical perspective, can be problematic. One important question regarding this could be: am I, as a researcher, mainly interested in carrying out my own ideas about development and change, or am I prepared to listen to the ”stories from within” (the school), regardless what these stories is about?

One conclusion from my thesis is that further attention ought to be made to the significance of the local context when it comes to carry through a new idea on development and change.

Further studies based on an antenarrative approach could make one contribution to our understanding of this interplay between policy and practice.

[1]The concept of policy is in this context to be understood in terms of being inclusive, ie. all written material used (e.g. at a local school) as if it was policy (se Weaver Hightower 2008).

Konstbild och bildundervisning - en konstpedagogisk utmaning2003Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This thesis presents a study on different school actors’ narratives about how they have experienced a participation in a school development collaboration called PBS, problem based school development. A school development and research project based at Karlstad University. The analysis is inspired by a narrative approach and a critical perspective on policy, were policy is understood as both text and discourse. The aim of the study is to show how the carrying through of this new policy (PBS) is received and reconstructed in three Swedish municipal settings. In the analysis the participant’s narratives are also related to the reconstructions of the field of education politics that has been carried out the last decades, here in Sweden as well as in other countries around the world.

In this study 46 interviews were carried out. Official texts from each of the three school organizations have also been studied. As analytical tools parts of a model called the zoom-model and three different concepts, taken from the field of organization studies have been used.

The overall result shows that those who work in schools today are engaged in a large amount of development works, claims and ways of working that they themselves choose to enact. The results also show how the interviewees receive and charge these ideas with their own previous experiences and how this is done in discursive contexts that shape what is considered normal and evident.

One conclusion is that further attention ought to be made to the significance of the local context when it comes to carry through a new idea on development and change. A conclusion drawn from how interpretations and reconstructions of both development models prior to PBS and of the national steering model came to play important roles in how PBS was received and reconstructed in the studied municipalities. But different interpretations of the PBS model also led to tensions within and between the different areas of the organizations. Tensions that can be described as dilemmas, implicated by an ongoing cacophony of policy voices, whose prescriptions pull on different directions. When the PBS-policy arrives in this discursive room the results show how this policy can become a tool in line with new discursive narratives of education, regardless the intensions formulated in the context of policy text construction.

Conceptual Understandings of Democracy and Values as Aspects of Teacher Quality: The Case of Teacher Education in Sweden2015In: International Perspectives on Education and Society, ISSN 1479-3679, ISSN 1479-3679, Vol. 27, p. 385-412Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter focuses on a conceptual understanding of democracy and values education in teacher education, taking the perspective that educa- tion, of necessity, must encompass broader purposes of qualification, socialization and subjectification and that the relationship between them is characterized by interdependence. This chapter analyzes two aspects of teacher quality: first, the importance of values and the understanding of and approaches to values and democracy; second, variations in con- ceptual understandings within a particular educational field (teacher edu- cation). The study maps what teacher educators and institutional leaders for teacher education programs have to say about democracy and values education in relation to teacher preparation given the context of demo- cratic education reforms in the postwar period. This chapter addresses issues such as the readiness among teachers to teach democracy and values as an overarching and qualitative aspect of the teaching profes- sion. This study finds that, on the one hand, there is strong curricular support for democracy and related values education in schools and, on the other hand, a mixed landscape in teacher education. The situation within teacher education suggests an embracement of these issues but with a high degree of conceptual ambiguity and vagueness.

Does Teacher Education Matter?: Newly Graduated Teachers’ Evaluations of Teacher Education in Sweden2012In: Reflecting Education, ISSN 1746-9082, E-ISSN 1746-9082, Vol. 8, no 2, p. 6-22Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

What do newly graduated teachers think about the value of their own teacher preparation? This study reports the findings of a national questionnaire administered to almost 10,000 student teachers in Sweden who in the 2007-08 academic year were conferred with a teacher degree. Teacher education programmes in Sweden were subject to national evaluations in 2005 and 2008. Substantial criticism was voiced against programmes and the public debate was loud. In relation to those evaluations and the following debates, the national association for deans responsible for teacher education programmes sparked an internal discussion on quality, an initiative that resulted in launching this questionnaire as a collaborative project. The questionnaire asked for the opinions of these newly graduated teachers by including questions in four areas, with each evaluating a different aspect of the teacher profession concerning how well they had been prepared for: 1) direct teaching/instruction; 2) the wider work of a teacher; 3) development work; and 4) outreach and collaboration. According to these newly graduated teachers, they appear to have been best prepared for their entry to working life when it comes to direct teaching/instruction. The other three areas have a smaller proportion of satisfied respondents. It was also found that, despite decades of reforms aimed at merging the two teacher education traditions (the academic tradition and the seminar tradition), significant differences still remain concerning how subject teachers (teachers for secondary school) and class teachers (teachers for pre- and primary school) experience and evaluate their teacher preparation. The results are analysed in relation to the general debate on learning in higher education and the more specific discussion on the value of teacher preparation. They are also discussed in relation to programme design and whether particular areas of study should mainly be located in either initial (pre-service) teacher education or programmes for professional development.
    Abstract [en]

The report is about setting up an Implementation plan for a structured maintenance work on Valmet ABs foundry in Karlstad. This work is the final part for the Degree of Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering and takes place at Karlstad University in the spring of 2014.

Valmet has recently bought the foundry at Lamberget in Karlstad. The maintenance work is much neglected and in the current state there is no good structure. The maintenance work is in need of systemization and integration into Valmets other maintenance organization.

The purpose of the project is to develop a plan Implementation plan for a structured maintenance work on Valmet ABs foundry in Karlstad.

The project is divided into three phases.

    - Situational analysis through both interviews of maintenance personnel and identifying the current equipment

    - Create a vision of how they want to work with maintenance through benchmarking against other similar businesses, and literature studies

    - Establishment of a plan for how to get there. What activities to be performed and in what order

The work is based on the methodology TPM (total productive maintenance). However it is not about an implementation of TPM, but limited to certain parts.

From interviews with the maintenance staff at the foundry, observational studies and an identification study of the machinery, a situational analysis has been made. This situation analysis has shown the problems and challenges that exist in the maintenance department at the foundry.

A vision of how they want to work with maintenance on the foundry has been drawn, based on study visits and interviews with management staff. It is most vital that emerged in this phase is the importance of management commitment to implement a process of change. A good communication both between the different departments and within the group is also vital.

Using the two phases above, together with the theory processed during the project, a plan has been established for a more structured maintenance. The plan includes 12 stages that addresses the activities that should be implemented, and in what order, in order to get a better structure on maintenance work at the foundry at Valmet.

The two single most important elements of the plan are, in my mind, to hire a person who is responsible for the daily operations of the maintenance work. As well as to implement the maintenance system AM-underhåll, so you can get a better structure to the maintenance work in the form of work orders, metrics and history.

    Abstract [en]

This study reviews outdoor educational activity, its contents and qualities, whose basis rests on reform educators as Dewey and Freire. These pedagogues’ methodology is based on the interaction between theory and practice, reflection and action. It appears from previous research that: Nature has beneficial effects on human health; Physical activity has positive effects on schoolchildren's health and on their test scores in mathematics and swedish. Training in outdoor education for teachers has contributed to outdoor education having become part of elementary schools´ activities.

The purpose of this study is to find out to what extent a School of Nature is useful for three primary school teachers´ activities. Empirics was conducted using qualitative interviews. The research questions are: what purpose does primary schools teachers have for making use of Nature School in their activities? What purpose do the teachers in the Nature School have for their activities?

The results of the study show that the primary school teachers perceive Nature School's activities as an important support and complement to their school activities. The results also show that the Nature School´s activity provides students with new opportunities to grow as individuals both socially, emotionally, and cognitive. By the results of the study it can be concluded that the activities of Nature School are in great demand, and contribute to teachers' knowledge by being a form of training. This means that Nature school contributes with important skills for these elementary schools´ activities. There is a greater demand of Nature school´s activity than what today can be met. Nature school contributes to the interviewed primary school teachers meet regulatory documents Lpo 94, particularly by Nature School combines theory, practice, reflection and action in their activities. Further research opportunities would be to consider young people's worlds, their thoughts and ideas about what they perceive as a challenge in terms of outdoor education.

    Abstract [en]

This is a case study which investigated the perceived consequences of the organizational change that was implemented in January 2013 at Karlstad University. The study aimed to explore the experiences of the employees concerning the changes in organizational structure and internal communication. This was done through a set of eight individual standardized qualitative interviews with members from different departments. A lot of effort and thought was given to the ethical implications and to create a comfortable and open climate during the actual interviews to ensure that the respondents felt free to speak openly and honestly about their personal opinions and experiences.

It is evident that the overall vision was ambitious; aiming to create a more effective organization through cutting off excessive administrative personnel and streamlining decision paths. However according to the opinions of the respondents it was clear that the result was far from the desired goal. Essentially, efficiency was only achieved at the top level. Previous administrative tasks have been moved to new members and a major uncertainty has arisen. A critical reason for the failure was the lack of communication during the organizational change, which created lots of antagonism from the employees. The management was unsuccessful in making the members feel involved in the decision making, and a lack of transparency was apparent. The hopes of a transparent organization were then high after the change, but proved to turn out quite the contrary. Decision referrals have failed to reach the employees until after the final decision has been made. The decision paths are not considered to be more effective amongst the departments and a massive dissatisfaction has emerged since employees no longer can make their own decision on matters that involve them. This involves for example shaping their own syllabi, something which they were fully capable and successful in doing before the change. A massive micromanagement has thus been created, and it is not deemed adapted to the organization as a whole. This has created an impression amongst the members that they are no longer trusted or considered competent. The merging of departments has not been successful either. Some combinations are not considered logical and the desire to break new grounds has not been achieved. The old department groups instead appear to have grown stronger, and not the cooperation in-between them, not even within the newly combined departments. One reason for this may be that the idea and hope of increasing cooperation across department borders was a desire from the management, and not the departments themselves. Thus, there is uncertainty both in the current leadership structure and internal communication. The members are lacking proper instructions on how communication should pass both up and down. Therefore they desire more distinct guidelines and an explicit division of responsibilities. The conclusion is therefore unambiguous; improved effectiveness has only been achieved in the top layers of the organization, and not facilitated work or improved the situation of the employees. This consequence is pitiful at an organization such as a university with concurrent research, which definitely possesses the knowledge and competences within both organizational structures and internal communication. Conclusively, they have not managed in successfully converting their internal assets from theory to action.

Key words: internal communication, organizational change, organizational structure

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

What do elites really mean when they display positive attitudes toward increased citizen participation via ICTs? Are they aiming for institutional change or the reinforcement of existing institutions? What are the assumptions that underlie and condition support for e-participa-tion? In addressing these questions, this article draws upon a survey questionnaire mapping the support for e-participation in the field of urban planning, targeting the heads of the planning departments in all Swedish local governments in 2006. The results show confusing or conflicting elite attitudes towards participation, supporting as well as challenging the classic normative theories of participatory democracy and communicative planning.

    Abstract [en]

Despite claims that planners' attitude towards public participation has not always been enthusiastic, there have been genuine attempts to devolve powers through participation—although seldom with success. In this paper we discuss several major attempts to improve participation in Sweden including case studies of e-participation. Despite great expectations on information and communication technologies, Swedish experience indicates that the status quo between planners and people remains.

IT-säkerhet vid distansarbete2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Sticky Tweets: Decoding Social Contagion Traces Between Politicians and Other Users on Twitter2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study observes and discusses online interactions realized between political actors and other users accounts during an electoral campaign. The aim of this study is to decode social contagion traces of messages shared by Turkish leading politicians and political parties with their online audiences, using asymmetrical social media website Twitter. Both quantity and content of politicians’ messages are representative of their political campaigns reflecting to social media and voters who use the same tools as them can also express retaliation towards their communication. In this study, like behavior on Twitter is identified as representative of appreciation and retweet behavior is identified as representative of adoption of an idea in relation to social contagion theory. The objective is to find out, compare and analyze voters’ behaviors towards different kind of messages according to their quantity and content nature. By this study, it will be possible to answer some questions; such as how much interaction is generated on Twitter by chosen political accounts, are voters getting into more interaction with positive or negative affirmations, which are the main subjects that voters are getting into more interaction and what are the tendency of voters to show appreciation or adoption of ideas on Twitter during the pre-election phase in Turkey.

    Abstract [en]

The work refers to taking the pulse of aesthetic learning processes in preschool. What is defined as aesthetic learning processes? How much influence teachers' subject knowledge staging of aesthetic learning processes in preschool? Do the aesthetic learning processes mean that the body is seen as the main tool and starting point for all knowledge creation? By use of literature review, questionnaire and interview methods examined this closely. The survey shows that there is a certain imbalance in the teachers' subject knowledge connected to aesthetic expression. The art subject can be seen to have a head start when it comes to staging aesthetic learning processes in preschool.

    Abstract [sv]

The South African Gumboot dance - a message from the past2004Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Flow och rädsla för negativ bedömning hos musiker2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Ammoniumkvävereduktion vid lakvattenrening med mobil bioreaktor: vid olika temperaturer och fosfortillskott2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The need for energy efficient and well-functioning water treatment systems is high, and grows as the growing population increases. Leachate is formed as water flows through landfilled waste. The problem of leachate treatment is that the reactors are located outdoors, which causes low temperatures during the winter months. As the leachate treatment is mainly carried out with biological purification techniques, the low temperatures cause a decrease in bacterial activity, which reduces the purification efficiency. Another problem that often arises in this type of water treatment is that the contaminated water consists of high nitrogen levels, while phosphorus levels are low. This gives an imbalance in the metabolism of the bacteria and can lead to limitations in purification efficiency. In this work, a newly developed bioreactor, which is tested at Djupdalen's waste facility, has been investigated. The bioreactor was put into operation in autumn 2015 and from April to December 2016. Measurement data from Djupdalen based on monthly water samples and chemical analyzes for 2014-2016 have been studied to find out the bioreactor's contribution to the purification efficiency of ammonium nitrogen. Water sampling was carried out in May 2017, where purification efficiency and active biofilm surface were calculated during the operation start of the bioreactor. Finally, experiments were performed where biofilms from Djupdalen were tested at 17-18 as well as 12-15 ° C with different levels of phosphorus supplementation, to investigate whether purification efficiency could be improved if phosphorus levels were increased. The results indicate that the bioreactor contributes to a significant improvement in the purification efficiency of the aeration reactor, but there is still an improvement potential. Several of the environmental factors in the aeration reactor cause less favorable conditions for bacterial growth, such as temperatures below 15 ˚C, severe phosphorus deficiency in the incoming leachate and slightly for basic pH values. Through water sampling and the accompanying chemical analysis it was found that temperatures above 15 ˚C in the leachate favor a faster development of the biofilm. Finally, laboratory experiments showed that phosphorus additions at temperatures of 12-15 ° C resulted in increased purification efficiency, while the result was unchanged for temperatures of 17-18 ° C at a water residence time at 24 hours. However, at a lower water residence time of 16 hours, the phosphorous supplement gave an effect for both temperatures. This indicates that a phosphorus supplement during the autumn of the aeration reactor, when the temperatures in the leachate go below 15 ˚C, should allow the bioreactor to improve its purification efficiency despite the sinking water temperature.

BOSSE: Bofors Soldatsystem Ex-jobb2006Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 15 points / 22,5 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This examination assignment was executed as a part of the innovation and design mechanical engineer program at Karlstad University. The program is a 120 point (180 points ECTS) where the examination assignment is 15 points (22, 5 points ECTS). BAE Systems Bofors in Karlskoga was the company who gave us the assignment and with Jan Ainali as the supervisor. Monica Jakobsson was the supervisor at Karlstad University.

The assignment was to develop a soldier system and an interface between this system and combat vehicle CV9040. The reason for thhe assignment is that the soldier’s role recently has changed to demand equipment more capable in information technology.

To get started with the project an inventory was carried out partly to gather information about competing soldier systems, partly to investigate the vital components of such a system to start the development process.

The method used was largely based on the design process taught at Karlstads University as the project started with idea generation and the result of the assignment was presented in the form of a concept.

The result of this process was the soldier system BOSSE (Bofors SoldatSystemsExjobb) and consists of a number of components and concept of how to integrate the system with CV9040. Of the developed components two was pushed further in the process, the aiming module and the PDA (personal digital assistant).

Komvux-elevers förståelse av fasövergångar2002Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Samarbetet mellan sjuksköterska och närstående inom palliativ vård: En litteraturstudie2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Två elevers berättade erfarenheter av dyslexi: En narrativ studie2015Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this narrative study is to investigate and develop an understanding of pupils´ experiences of being diagnosed as dyslectics and their experiences of school life. The study aims to examine the following questions:

    • What and how do pupils narrate about being diagnosed as dyslectics?
    • What told experiences have pupils with dyslexia of their school life?
    • What identity appearances do the pupils make in their narrations?

The empirical study consists of narrations of two pupils´ experiences of being diagnosed with dyslexia and being a pupil in school. Methodologically, this study is socially situated, which means that the narrations and identity appearances are constructed in the meeting between the interviewee and the interviewer and the life stories were created in a social context together with others. The analysis is focused on what and how the pupils narrate and the narrations have been compiled to life stories.

The result showed that the pupils were positive to being diagnosed, because it helped them to understand the specific difficulties and they became aware of that the difficulties are not related to intelligence. The relations to and the teachers´ attitudes, strategies for helping and understanding of their difficulties and needs were highly valued in this study.

When pupils´ experiences are described in life stories, teachers and special educators can gain an understanding for their situations and the life stories can motivate a change and form basis for decisions on further research of pupils´ reading and writing difficulties. This is especially important in special educator´s mission to create opportunities for each pupils´ learning and development.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract

The purpose of the study is to examine how children perceive the relation between play and sex and analyse it from a gender perspective. This by answering the questions: "Is the children’s choice of place, materials and company in play dependent on gender?" and "Is there a significant difference between the sexes and/or ages?" The study was done through twelve focusgroup interviews with three children in each group except two groups of two children in each. Eight boys and nine girls of six years old and nine boys and eight girls of nine years old were interviewed. Boys and girls were interviewed in separate groups and the questions were open ended and followed up. The analysis was done from a gender perspective where gender is considered a social construction, and the dichotomous and hierarchal gender system is the normative point of view for this essay.

The results showed that there were differences between both the sexes and the ages in the children included in the study. The children had a strong opinion of what was common for boys and what was common for girls to play. The boys had more difficulty crossing gender boundaries than the girls. There was a difference between the ages in that the younger children played more role-play and the older children tended to play games with structured rules. There were differences in power between the sexes. The boys played in a larger area than the girls and the girls positioned themselves as weaker or subordinate. In the choice of playmates the boys and girls played largely separated and when integrated play occurred it was generally as opposite sides of a chasing game. The girls verbalised a lager focus on the relationship to their playmates than the boys did, where signs of hierarchical orders within the groups of girls was evident. There were also differences in choice of materials used in play in both ages. Examples for further research could be an observation of the children combined with interviews to note differences in the children’s view of the relation between gender and play in theory and what it looks like in practice. Further research in the power yielded by girls could also be done.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how pupils in elementary school perceive the subject history, which includes pupils wiew of the subjects meaning, if history is perceived as interesting and which areas in history the pupils find interesting. In order to reach the purpose of the study a survey was made in two schools with a total amount of 110 participant pupils. The results of the study shows that the pupils mainly have a positive attitude towards history. A large amount of the pupils shows interest for the subject and an even larger amount pupils find knowledge in history important. When they are to describe why, or why not it is important to have knowledge in history, a big variety of answers is shown, many pupils states that it`s important because it`s a way of understanding our development, while others means that we`re not supposed to look back into the past, instead live in the moment. In the terms of which areas the pupils shows interest in, it was shown that history about war was popular among the boys, while the history of the pupils own family was most intersting among the girls.
