    Abstract [sv]

Nyckelord: Animation, 3D, manus, manusutveckling, film, dramaturgi, karaktärer

En utvärdering av användbarheten hos Itslearning och DigiExam: Användartest med gymnasieelever för att identifiera möjliga användbarhetsproblem2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Några lärares uppfattningar om språkstörning hos elever i grundskolan: Apprehensions of language impairment in Swedish Grammar school pupils2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

As the language is of the outmost importance for man’s thinking, learning and communicating, my purpose with this essay is to find out how teachers and special teachers apprehend the phenomenon “Language impairment in children”.

To help children to learn how to read and write is an important task for the teachers. But how do the pupils with language impairment manage to learn how to read and write? Do the teachers have the education required to take care of children with language impairment?

What do other teachers have to say in the matter? Are children with language impairment recognized in the Swedish Schools?

Through an interview survey, I want to find out what experienced teachers have to say in the matter.

The result shows that experienced teachers mostly try to correct the problems instead of pondering on what could have caused the impairment.

Further it can be said that language impairment will primarily result in grave consequences for the child. To be able to make contact with other people and to be able to communicate is important for our development, and for children with language impairment this is not easily done. Without the ability to communicate with its friends the child can easily be put on the outside of the Community and can therefore perhaps develop behaviour problems.

Gloarchy: Polyarchy in the Age of Globalization2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis tries to evaluate the very large question of how globalization can be said to have an effect on democracy by reducing both concepts to a more usable format. In doing so it tries to evaluate how a special theory of democracy put forward by Robert Dahl in 1971 – polyarchy – could be said to be affected by the workings of contemporary globalization. When assessing the variables of the investigation, globalization is being represented by two constructed ideal images that are later measured against a set of seven variables extracted from Dahl’s theory.

By the use of qualitative text analysis the constructed ideal types help provide a framework for how one can measure the effects of globalization on polyarchy. The analysis ends in a result where it is clear that if globalization is understood as a neo-liberal ideal image it is making the circumstances for the creation of polyarchies in the future more favorable. However, if globalization is understood as an ideal image of world-system theory explanations then the circumstances for future polyarchies are less favorable. In a concluding discussion important implications of the results are highlighted when the thesis concludes that regardless of ideological starting point globalization can be said to affect the theory of polyarchy in such a way that it is in dire need of reevaluation. At the same time the essay concludes that whenever the concept of globalization is being used with scientific ambitions by politicians, they need to be aware of, and reflect, the different results that it brings depending on how it is explained.

Vi har också en dröm!: Inblickar i The Black Panther Partys ideologi2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Black Panther Party arose as an alternative organization for African Americans in the turbulent 1960s. This essay aims to bring forth their often neglected thoughts and ideas to point out the key elements of their ideology. It does so by exploring the context of the time and the rather modern
theoretical framework called postcolonial theory. Using these two factors, the context and the concepts of post colonialism, helps bring forth both manifest and latent content from a number of articles, speeches and other significant texts written by the most important individuals in the organization.

Hermeneutics as a scientific school of thought guides the work presented here towards the goal of a deeper understanding of one of the most radical forces behind the black liberation movement and its leaders, particularly Huey P. Newton. Furthermore the ideology presented as the Black Panther Party’s allows for a short concluding discussion about its significance amongst the many revolutionary movements in the 1960s and 70s.

Establishing Conformity: Globalization Perspectives of Four Nordic Countries2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

By first arguing for the fact that globalization is a concept under contest within the social sciences this thesis develops a tool to classify perspectives of globalization. This tool is then applied to textual documents that represents the so called globalization councils (or initiatives) of Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway. Each document is then classified as falling within one of four perspectives of globalization; Liberalisms, Marxisms, Constructivisms and Post-colonialisms. By analyzing a number of documents tied to all four councils and initiatives the thesis is able to interpret what perspective of globalization that is dominant within each of them. Since all four nations examined aspire to use scientific methods to deal with the challenges of globalization they should reflect the diverse state of explanations present within the social scientific community. The thesis finds that this is not the case. While the Norwegian initiative establishes a platform where the concept of globalization could be said to be broadly debated and understood, the other three nations show an astonishing conformity around the perspective named Liberalisms.

In a concluding discussion the thesis argues that the results of the study cannot be fully explained by differences within the institutional arrangement among the councils and initiatives. Instead the thesis holds that the results can be explained by investigating how science is used in modern society to establish truths that are not necessarily the views of the scientific community. Using theories by Georg Henrik von Wright and Chantal Mouffe the essay concludes that the conformity could be understood as a part of a process that some social scientists call post-politics.

In the Midst of the Global Sub-national: Rationalities, Technologies and Subjects In Swedish Regional Governance2014Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The ’global’ is often articulated as a particular level of space situated at the highest tier of a hierarchical order that has its other extreme point in the local. In such models globalization becomes a process, or indeed a force, that shapes and reconfigures other levels of space such as the national. What is more, integrated with the conceptualization of the ‘global’ as a level of space is often a view of globalization as a phenomenon primarily constituted by a range of different flows of for instance immigrants, capital and information (Castells, 1999; Holton, 2005, Held & McGrew, 2007).

This paper departs from a different understanding as it investigates how globalization is (re)produced in a particular form of space. Here, space is understood to be relational (Massey, 1994; 2005), meaning that I do not consider the ‘global’ to be a level on its own, rather I theorize the global, like all other forms of spaces, as produced through a myriad of social practices and relations.

Given such an understanding of globalization an interesting development the last decades has been a resurgence of sub-national regions. In the literature this newfound focus on regions within national polities is often articulated as means for competitiveness (Säll, 2012; Keating, 2003). All around the world regions are engaged in a large number of practices that aims to foster competitiveness and growth in order to deal with the perceived challenges of globalization. Hence, so-called clusters, innovation systems and programs for variegated forms of creativity are now everyday features of sub-national regional governance (Florida, 2012; Porter, 1998).

Therefore, rather than studying national space, in this paper I show how sub-national regional governance is an important site for discursive production of globalization. Instead of focusing on how different flows affects individual regions, the priority here is on the regime of practice that is sub-national regional governance in a wider sense. Utilizing a governmentality approach (Miller & Rose, 2008; Dean, 2010) the paper investigates a corpus of documents pertaining to Swedish regional governance using a mixed set of techniques from Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Post-Structuralist Discourse Theory (PDT). The results highlight how the ‘global’ rationality is (re)produced in the Swedish case and how this together with a number of governmental technologies produces desired and undesired regional subjects.

In the Midst of the Global Sub-national: Rationalities, Technologies and Subjects in Swedish Regional Governance2014Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper studies the discursive construction of globalization as a particular form of rationale in sub-national regional development. As such it departs from an understanding of space as relational and holds that globalization can be theorized as a reconfiguration of the spatial aspects of our social relations (Massey, 1994, 2005). Therefore, it is argued here, to investigate globalization is to investigate aspects of the multiplicity of social relations that (re)produces the phenomenon. Using a governmentality framework (Dean, 2010) I trace how globalization is discursively (re)produced within a particular regime of practice, namely regional development in Sweden. Adopting such a framework and relating it to this instance of space enables novel interpretations of how globalization not only legitimizes certain practices but also how this in turn (re)articulates the concept, giving it specific meanings and features. At the same time it is shown here how this articulation produces and delimits social actors within the regions, illustrating concrete effects of globalization.

Measuring Innovation Space: Numerical Devices as Governmental Technologies2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Throughout Europe sub-national regions are restructured and reformed in line with the EU2020 policy program which dictates a clear focus on growth through the fostering of innovation and entrepreneurship. While this process is articulated differently in separate contexts it has a range of common features. One of these is the wide spread adoption of calculative devices and measurement tools that are installed as transparent means for governing and monitoring the ongoing strive for growth and innovation. In this paper it is argued that the contemporary practices and discourses tied to regional development in Europe and beyond can be described as the production of new innovation spaces. Intrinsic to this production is a vast register of indices, rankings and award ceremonies directed at finding and monitoring the most innovative regions, projects and policies which in turn facilitates the grounds for notions of policy learning and so called best practice. By mobilizing the growing literature on the sociological functions of numbers as well as the scholarship on the politics and power of calculative practices in governance, the paper critically examines important aspects of the installment of innovation spaces. More specifically, by following the manufacturing and installment of an index designed to measure innovative capacity of Swedish regions, the paper shows how such governmental technologies helps to legitimize and depoliticize the production of innovation spaces. The index has been released in three iterations since 2011 with an explicit focus on ranking for the sake of policy learning. It is produced by RegLab, an organization comprised of the 21 regions in Sweden as well as a number of important state agencies, and its deployment and influence on regional policy is traced here by focusing on the documentation and detailed description of the numerical calculations and data sources that are assembled together in order to produce the composite measures used to asses the innovative capacity of all regions. Moreover the influence of the index and its manifest expressions in regional policy is illustrated by examining some of the Regional Development Strategies (RDS).

Measuring innovation space: Numerical devices as governmental technologies2019In: Territory, Politics, Governance, ISSN 2162-2671, p. 1-18Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The context of sub-national regions in Sweden is used to illustrate how rankings and indices operate as part of contemporary governing of space and territory. An empirical study of an index designed to measure the innovative capacity of these regions is presented to illustrate how such numerical devices are invoked as part of policy by providing policy-makers with a means to define reality, guide strategy and legitimize certain actions. Drawing on both the literatures of governmentality and the sociology of quantification, the construction of the index and its deployment into politics are examined with a focus on the performative aspects of mobilizing such technologies in governing. The analysis shows how an instrument intended as a learning tool for regions and regional policy-makers turns into a device through which power operates in the processes of marking, grading and commensuration, in turn reinforcing established orders among the regions. Following from this, it is found that such numerical devices are important governmental technologies that help relay and institute political rationalities. Therefore, they should be considered more carefully in any analysis of discourses of regional development, which is a field permeated by rationalities of innovation and competitiveness.

Producing Globalization:: Legitimizing Regional Governance Regimes2014In: Diverse Regions: Building Resilient Communities and Territories / [ed] Elizabeth Mitchell, Regional Studies Association , 2014, p. 103-Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper explores the discursive construction of globalization as a particular form of rationale in sub-national regional development.

Here I depart from an instance of space that has not often been used as a basis for understanding articulations of globalization, namely the sub-national region. Using a governmentality framework (Dean, 2010) I trace how globalization is discursively (re)produced within regional governance in Sweden, focusing on the practices, technologies and rationalities that constitutes this regime.

More specifically, in terms of empiric material, I analyze a broad corpus of Regional Governance Documents (RGD) as well as the wide production of reports that was the outcome of Sweden’s so called Globalization Council. Methodologically the analysis is situated within the aforementioned framework of governmentality studies (Dean, 2010; Miller & Rose, 2008). This framework is then used as a point of departure for a form of discourse analysis that combines concepts from both Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Post-structuralist Discourse Theory (PDT).

This alignment of theory, methodology and empiric material enables me to produce three main areas of findings. First, by illustrating how globalization is framed in the regional governance documents as intertwined with notions of competition, growth and competitiveness I am able to demonstrate how this discursively legitimizes and fosters a certain range of practices. A particularly salient finding is how the documents contain articulations of a perspective of globalization that renders the phenomenon as more or less a natural force that is unavoidable and unchangeable. Second, in terms of relational space the discursive legitimization also contributes to the production of globalization in other forms of space, hence reinforcing general neo-liberal traits of the phenomenon that extends to regions, nations and continents around the world. Third, the paper also shows how the methodological framework that is used proved particularly fruitful in this case. Therefore, some time is spent reflecting on the possible benefits of combining CDA, PDT and governmentality and I argue that such multi-perspectival approaches are needed to illustrate the complex relay system of practices that produces globalization and regional governance.

Space Craft: Globalization and Governmentality in Regional Development2015Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis explores two related purposes. First, it theoretically investigates how the broad literature on globalization is nested in debates concerning the nature of concepts such as space and territory. When doing so, it suggests that studies of globalization can be advanced by escaping territorialist understandings where the nation state is reproduced as a natural arena appropriate for studying all aspects of ‘the social’.

The theoretical part of the thesis is used as a basis for articulating a framework for empirical studies that rest upon a conceptual grammar fashioned through a combination of so called assemblage thinking and governmentality analysis. This framework is then put to work as the second, empirical, purpose of the thesis is pursued. More precisely this means that the governance of Swedish regional development is analyzed as an assemblage of discourses, practices and subjects where (re)production of globalization occurs.

The (re)production of globalization is studied in three interrelated case studies, all based on a corpus of 81 documents pertaining to the governance of Swedish regional development. By paying attention to how power operates in terms of political rationalities, governmental technologies and the production of social actors, the thesis shows how notions of a perpetual and omnipresent global competition marks the assemblage with particularly salient modes of rationale. Specifically, entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity are represented as the primary means for becoming competitive in the age of globalization, and it is shown here how this have inclusionary and exclusionary effects in terms of desired social actors throughout Swedish regions. The thesis then ends with a concluding chapter where the current regimes of regional development are identified as complex forms of neoliberal rule with far reaching effects for democratic principles and practices.

    Abstract [en]

In this article I argue that the project, a governmental technology that is now widespread and accepted throughout the public sector, is not a neutral tool for implementing policy and conducting politics. Rather, my argument is that this form is intrinsically political in so far as it produces disruptions and sets boundaries for how any given task is to be performed. By mobilizing a set of optical metaphors from feminist theory of difference, I examine organizations that work for gender equality in Swedish regional development and illustrate how the governmental technology of the project reflects, refracts, and diffracts the practices associated with this work. Thus, I argue that if one wishes to understand contemporary gender-equality work, it is reasonable to consider the specific effects that are produced as it passes through the project form. The short empirical illustrations given here indicate, among other things, how the project form functions in some respects as a mirror, and reflects aspects of gender-equality work that are commonly experienced regardless of form or setting, such as encountering resistance. In other respects, the project form refracts gender-equality work, bending it into new directions so that, for instance, securing funds and coming up with new innovative project plans takes precedence over the actual work that respondents feel they should be doing. Finally, the intersection of gender-equality work and the project form also produces diffraction effects, such as the emergence of hybrid consultants. These multi-faceted figures function as evaluators, controllers, activists, and disseminators of knowledge, which makes them simultaneously important to and disdained by the respondents in this study. Thus, it is concluded that the disruptive effects of the project form should be recognized as political and studied more extensively in the future.

The aim of this article is to show how the organisational form “the project” functions as a governmental technology that disrupts the ongoing work for gender equality in Swedish regional development. Rather than assuming that projects are neutral forms for organizing public sector practices, I argue that they are imbued with politics and power in the first place and therefore should be studied critically. In particular, I suggest that as the project form intersects with the practice of gender equality work it will function as a lens that influences the trajectories of this work. Inspired be feminist theories of difference I therefore articulate a set of optical metaphors, namely reflection, refraction and diffraction, in order to make this intersection more visible. By mobilizing these metaphors and by drawing on data generated during empirical fieldwork in five Swedish regions the critical potential of this approach is illustrated. In terms of reflection, I mean to designate aspects common to most gender equality work, regardless of organizational form. Here, this is demonstrated by showing how activists and civil servants feel that they are subjected to various forms of resistance from established structures. As for refractions, I use the concept to exemplify how the project form produces new directions in the way gender equality work is carried out. For instance, securing new funding and to survive economically becomes central concerns under projectified politics. Finally, I also illustrate the emergence of hybrid forms, what is here called diffraction effects, as gender equality work passes through the governmental technology of “the project”. In our case this is exemplified by how private consultants fill central roles in gender equality work. I conclude that taken together the illustrations calls for a recognition of the project form as political as well as for more detailed research regarding its expressions.

Local Government and Public Procurement: Organizational Trends and the Rise of New Bureaucrats in Sweden2018Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Swedish local government play a central role in welfare production and in handling environmental issues at large. In addition, they also plan the physical use of land and water areas within its territory. Accordingly, Swedish local government are crucial actors in driving sustainable development. During the last decades reform of local government has been taking place under the umbrella of New Public Management (NPM) following a pattern seen in most parts of the world entailing market inspired logics and values that subsumes political and democratic ambitions and tasks. The political rationalities underpinning NPM continues to exist and are well researched. There are, however, significant gaps. In particular, of studies concerning the politics of public procurement. In this paper we present an analysis where public procurement is understood more broadly, as a governmental technology, an instrument of governing associated with the rationalities of marketization and competition that continues to be more or less unquestioned as virtues in contemporary society. We assume that as such a technology it is not a neutral tool, but rather designed to realize particular understandings of how to govern and with what effects. The case we present is based on interviews with civil servants, consultants and politicians working with public procurement in Swedish local government. With the perceptions of our respondents as a base, we construct a narrative where three themes emerge as important: public procurement expansion; organizational change and centralization, and: the procurer as bureaucrat. We conclude that the importance and scope of public procurement within the larger local government organization has rapidly expanded, public procurement has been centralized and, perhaps most importantly, we witness the emergence of a new bureaucrat representing values not compatible with traditional Weberian understandings.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Ideonella dechloratans is one of several isolated strains of bacteria with the ability to use chlorate in its metabolism in an anaerobic environment. This can be utilized by, for example, the paper industry where chlorate is an environmentally dangerous pollutant after chlorine dioxine bleaching.

Chlorate and perchlorate have been found to have negative effects in humans, animals and plants which give rise to a need for more research on improved purification methods. If the gene regulation of the enzymes that handle the breakdown of chlorate, chlorate reductase and chlorite dismutase, could be improved to work in an aerobic environment then both the purification and cost efficiency could improve.

By inserting the promoter regions for chlorate reductase and chlorite dismutase in a broad-host-range reporterplasmid, pQlacZ-1, they can be evaluated in several different conditions and different strains of gram-negative bacteria.

Through double cleaving of pQlacZ-1 with BamHI and EcoRI, PCR products of Clrp and Cldp from Ideonella dechloratans have been ligated into E. coli, XL-1 Blue.

Gel extraction was found to be the most efficient method of purification before ligation but further screening needs to be performed on the transformants to ensure the efficiency of the method.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Financial literacy is knowledge of financial concepts and products, as well as the ability to apply it in real life. Several studies have shown that most individuals have insufficient knowledge in the field. The problem that arises is the direct impact this has on financial decision-making. The study examines whether economic education increases financial literacy and thus contributes too more informed financial decisions. Furthermore, it studies numeracy and its relationship to education and financial literacy as previous research addressed these factors together. To explore this, a questionnaire was distributed to economic students at Karlstad University. The respondents were divided into two groups in order to identify the role of education. Students who just have started their economic education and individuals who have studied economics for at least three years. The results show that a student who has study economics has better financial literacy. Education in economic also had a positive effect on numeracy, participation in the stock market and long-term savings.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to find out how teachers think that they should work to maintain students´ interest and motivation for school mathematics in the early years of elementary school, and what they think about their ability to conduct the education they want to pursue in order to achieve this. Five teachers responded to my questionnaire. Their answers were analyzed using phenografic method because I wanted to describe how teachers perceive their actions with the purpose of increased student motivation. In the analysis I was looking for similarities and differences which then formed the basis of my results. Of the results that emerged from the survey responses indicates that the teachers need to expand their knowledge on how to teach their subject. They need access to the latest research, reading reports, attending courses or Lärarlyftet. They need more time to understand the curriculum of the compulsory school to be able to put up a good and distinct teaching. The teachers also need more instructional time to meet all the demands placed on them. Both the requirements of the Swedish National Agency of Education (Skolverket) but also demands from students who want to have lessons that are fun, interesting and educative. If this is met, future students will feel a greater interest and a greater motivation for mathematics.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Trots intensiv forskning sedan bakteriens upptäckt 1976 fortsätter Legionella orsaka problem i moderna VVS-installationer.

    Abstract [en]

In industry, around 20-50% of the energy supply is lost in the form of surplus heat. Stricter environmental restrictions and incentives for higher economic profitability lead to the development of technology to increase recovery of this excess heat.

Valmet AB is a company that provides facilities including paper and cardboard products. They are interested in investigating the possibility of increasing energy efficiency for the use of recovered surplus heat from tissue production, where the waste heat was represents by wet flue gases coming from the drying equipment.

The purpose of the study is to investigate the waste heat and how it is used for electricity production with an Organic Rankin Cycle. The heat recovery potential in the flue gases and the ideal work was set against the actual work that could be achieved with the Organic Rankin Cycle. Modeling and design was performed using the ChemCad simulation tool, using a simplified model that does not calculate the components sizes and costs. The focus is instead on thermodynamic behaviors, in which extracted work and efficiencies are used to measure performance.

Simulations were performed with respect to three different operating instances with waste heat with different moisture content. For the Organic Rankine Cycle, six different working media were investigated; Butane, Isobutan, R123, R236EA, R245ca and R245fa.

The study showed that a large heat recovery potential exists in wet flue gases in the form of latent heat. Operating conditions with higher moisture content resulted in latent heat being recovered at higher temperatures. Higher moisture content also resulted to a higher performance in the Organic Rankin Cycle. In latent heat recovery, the ORC also demonstrated highest performance, with Isobutan as the best working medium, which was also the most environmentally friendly.

The pinch temperature between the waste heat and the working medium was found to be a parameter influencing the performance of the ORC, where an increase of the pinch of 15˚C leads to a reduction of the ORC net production by 38%. Further studies taking into account physical and economic constraints needs to be set against the technical results of the cycle to evaluate the ORC performance.

    Abstract [en]

Brominated flame-retardants (BFR) are substances that have been discussed for a long time. The discussions have principally handled the negative side effects that BFR are supposed to have. Many of the BFR can disturb the hormones. This disturbance can lead to cancer. They can also be bioaccumulated and biomagnificated. There are about 70 different BFR and just a few of them are risk analyzed by EU. The legislation against BFR is limited. PBB (polybrominated biphenyl) is prohibited for use in materials that shall be in contact with skin. A form of PBDE (polybrominated diphenylether), penta-BDE, will be prohibited from 1 July 2003. The work has been carried out at Saab Automobile AB and has aimed to find out where in the car BFR are used and the possibilities to replace them with more environmental friendly substances. To detect the BFR, methods like searching in databases at Saab, contacts with people inside and outside the company and literature studies were used. A list of applications that contained, respective were suspected to contain BFR, could be made. If there were no possibilities to procure information about the applications contents, chemical analysis were made on the materials. As detection method x-ray analyze with scanning electron microscope were used. Brominated flame-retardants were found at a few places in the car but above all in electronic-related parts like circuit boards. The proposed substitutes have all in common that they are more expensive than the existing materials, usually between 10-25 %. According to the suppliers there are possibilities to replace materials that contain BFR today. To proceed with a replacement the replacing materials must first be tested. For the moment it looks like a replacement of today’s circuit boards to halogen free circuit boards should have a big positive impact when it comes to minimize the amount BFR in the car.

Teachers in Social Studies can benefit from geographical perspectives in their teaching of Social Studies in elementary and high school. The aim is to connect geographical perspectives to various social processes and to integrate it in teaching of Social Studies. But how can the relevance of geographical perspectives in an education for teachers in Social Studies be motivated and to what benefits can it be internalized? I will try to answer that question in this article. This relevance is mainly, with basis in a literature study, focused on democracy, sustainable development and digital literacy. It is also relevant by giving teachers a broader teaching skill and thus they are able to help pupils achieve higher-order skills.

Ett nytt Lhiv: En undersökning om HIV, kris och livsformsanalys2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this qualitative study was, through a hermeneutic perspective, to find out how social workers in the social services, experience the psychosocial work environment. We wanted to explore how the social workers found joy in their vocation and which challenges the social workers experienced in the work. We chose to interview six social workers with varying length in the profession, active in two municipalities. The interview material was interpreted with Sense of Coherence (SOC) and the demand-control-social support model. The result of the study shows that a good working group and good colleagues was important to experience wellbeing at the workplace, which we interpreted as the social workers experienced a meaningfulness of their work. The clients were also a factor that contributed to the social workers satisfaction in their work, but also something that was a challenge in their profession. Other challenges were that they didn´t have time for their duties because of the documentation requirements and that there were flaws in routines and guidelines that complicated their work.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this work was to study from a couple of teachers perspective how concentrations difficulties is being described and also how pupil.s concentration difficulties influence other pupils/the class. I chose to do an interviewstudy, where I interviewed four teachers from out of their experiences. I asked questions which touched diffuculties and how it manifests, the other pupils reactions and the influence on the class.

The result of the study showed that the teachers experience that pupils can feel that it is hard and can get disturbed by the child with concentration difficulties. It also came to light that the children around is making up strategies to handle the situation, for an example by ignoring. The teachers pushed for an open and straight communication and valued discussions with the class highly, all to build understanding between the children.

There is a lot of research about concentration difficulties. The medical, social and pedagogic pieces are there, but there is less about how the environment is effected. Therefore I chose to also shed a light on the pupils around the pupils with concentration difficulties from teachers' perspectives.

    Abstract [en]

Alternate Reality Games (ARGs) are a form of internet-based mystery game in which participants are immersed in a fictional                     world and engage in collective problem-solving. This article studies three ARGs connected to the TV series Alias (ABC, 2001—6), two of them launched by the network ABC as part of the marketing of the TV series, the third produced by fans.                     Previous research on ARGs has not sufficiently problematized the fact that many ARGs are marketing tools. While ARGs can be                     analysed as part of a wider context of convergence culture and fan culture, such an analysis must take into account the underlying                     commercial logic of popular culture production. Despite the differences found between industry-produced and fan-produced ARGs,                     they still share a framework of consumption that conforms to corporate goals of marketing and brand-building as well as fan                     audiences' goals of pleasurable interaction with fictional worlds

Anything you can do, I can do better?: Professional journalists vs. citizen journalistsin six European countries2013In: International Communication Gazette, ISSN 1748-0485, E-ISSN 1748-0493, Vol. 75, no 1, p. 35-53Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article is based on 63 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with professional journalists across career stages and across media in six European countries (UK, Estonia, Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden), and is concerned with how journalists answer the question: How is what you do different from what citizen journalists do? Based on existing literature on journalistic authority and the professional project, three areas where claims to professional legitimacy and distinction from amateurs are identified: expertise, duty and autonomy. The interview data show that while claims based on expertise and duty are common when professional journalists want to demarcate the boundary between them and citizen journalism, claims based on direct reference to autonomy are non-existent. However, claims based indirectly on reference to autonomy, but institutional or collective rather than individual autonomy, are common. Indeed the key result of this study is that legitimacy claims based on the collective nature of the journalistic endeavour are very common, in contrast to earlier constructions of journalistic professionalism, which emphasized individualism and individual autonomy.

Clientelism, Elites and the Media in Central and Eastern Europe2012In: The International Journal of Press/Politics, ISSN 1940-1612, E-ISSN 1940-1620, Vol. 17, no 4, p. 497-515Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article argues that the traditional political science definition of clientelism is insufficient for explaining how the media fit in with clientelistic systems in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). It is suggested that a broader understanding of clientelism, looking in particular at how media are used as elite-to-elite communication tools as well as elite-to-mass communication tools, better explains the place of the media in the clientelistic systems of the CEE nations. Empirically, it is based on a set of 272 elite and expert interviews conducted across ten CEE countries (Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia) in 2010 and 2011. The article presents some general findings on the nature and character of the linkages between political elites and the media, and the extent to which such linkages can be considered clientelistic. Then follows a discussion of specific practices of media instrumentalization, charting the many ways in which the media can function as a resource in conflicts and negotiations between clientelistic elite networks, directly as well as indirectly. Particular attention is given to the phenomena of advertorials and kompromat.

Comparative Journalism Research: an Overview2012In: Sociology Compass, ISSN 1751-9020, E-ISSN 1751-9020, Vol. 10, no 6, p. 769-780Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This overview focuses on the most common type of comparative journalism research, which is cross-national comparative research. The overview presents a typology for different types of comparative journalism research, based on whether the research interest is in journalism as an activity or as a product; and, in the case of journalism as an activity, whether the interest is in the system level, the organizational level, or the individual level of journalism. The overview finds that the analysis of journalism on the individual level and of journalism as a product are the most common types of comparative research, whereas comparative analysis of journalism on the organizational level is much under-studied.
