    Investigation of consumer attitudes, practices and food waste for three food items, to use as input in new packaging designs that aim to reduce food waste2017In: 28th IAPRI World Symposium on Packaging, 2017, p. 1-7Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    A wide range of measures is required to tackle the global food waste problem. Innovative packaging, which helps to reduce food waste, is one important measure. The data for food waste is often presented in a summarised way. However, different food products are wasted for different reasons. In a Swedish project, actors along the entire value chain collaborated to develop new packaging solutions to reduce food waste of three products: salsa in glass jars, mixed lettuce in plastic packaging and rice pudding in plastic packaging. Waste levels and reasons for waste were examined in waste audits of the businesses, in ethnographic studies and in interviews with consumers at retail stores.

    This study showed that consumers wasted the products to a much higher extent than the waste which occurred during filling, transport and retail. Waste levels among consumers varied from 0-75%, which is notably high, given that consumers tend to underestimate or not admit to wasting food. The mixed lettuce and rice pudding are both intended to be packaged in appropriate serving sizes; however, only 27% of the mixed lettuce and 50% of the rice pudding was consumed in one sitting. Respondents mentioned some material features and several handling functions of packaging, but very few commented on the protection that the packaging provides. Few, if any, expressed any recognition of packaging attributes, which helped to avoid food waste.

    The respondents mentioned that wasting food was a waste of money and that it can have a negative effect on conscience; despite that, respondents also said that they wanted a variety of meals and to not have the same food several days during the same week.

    Abstract [en]

    This study explores the possibilities of increasing customer satisfaction and reducing the environmental impact from food-packaging systems in alifecycleperspective using results from a study on consumers' demands on packaging based on Kano's Theory of Attractive Quality. It assesses the environmentaleffects of potential improvements in quality attributes. The results show that there are obvious potentials to increase customer satisfaction and at the same time decrease in the environmental impact of the food-packaging system, especially when the packaging design helps to decrease food losses. There were many connections between quality attributes and environmental impacts.

    Abstract [en]

    The amount of food waste needs to be reduced in order to sustain the world's limited resources and secure enough food to all humans. Packaging plays an important role in reducing food waste. The knowledge about how packaging affects food waste in households, however, is scarce. This exploratory study examines reasons for food waste in household and especially how and to what extent packaging influences the amount of food waste. Sixty-one families measured their amount of food waste during seven days and noted in a diary why each item was wasted. Thirty of the families had participated earlier in an environmental project including education in environmental issues of everyday life. About 20-25% of the households' food waste could be related to packaging. Three packaging aspects dominate the packaging related waste: packages that the consumer noted as being too big and packages that were difficult to empty, and wastage because of passed "best before date". The environmentally educated households wasted less, especially of prepared food. They also wasted less food due to passed "best before date". These households were more observant to packaging aspects in relation to food waste. The observations made could be used to learn more about packaging attributes that affect food waste. Although they recognised packaging influence on food waste, these households expressed lower satisfaction with packaging functions and wanted packaging to a lower extent. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd.     Studiens utgångspunkt kretsar kring problematiken, hur man som kommande gymnasielärare bör ställa sig till den traditionella kunskapsförmedlingen (föreläsandet) och den kunskapssyn som utgör denna arbetsmetodik. Enligt pedagogikprofessorn Arne Maltén är inte all kunskapsförmedling av ondo, men den får inte komma att dominera undervisningen. Studiens syfte består i att undersöka, huruvida eller i vilken utsträckning som Lpf 94: s kunskapssyn tangerar den uppfattning som studiens intervjuade lärare ger uttryck för, beträffande kunskapssyn och undervisningsmetodik. Syftet kommer att konkretiseras utifrån följande forskningsfrågor; (1) Vilka uppfattningar över kunskap och arbetsmetodik finns hos de intervjuade lärarna? (2) Ger lärarna uttryck för en kunskapssyn som överensstämmer med den som förmedlas i gymnasieskolans styrdokument? (3) Överensstämmer de examinationsuppgifter som premieras av lärarna med den kunskapssyn/arbetsmetodik som framkommer hos respektive intervjuperson? Frågorna ett och tre utgör grunden för studiens resultat del, medan fråga två behandlas i analysdelen där analysmetoden är förankrad utifrån Lpf 94: s teoretiska föreskrifter. Metoden för det empiriska materialinsamlandet har i denna undersökning utgått från fyra intervjuer, två lärare i respektive samhällskunskap och historia. Den strategiska utgångspunkten för den kvalitativa studien har karaktären av en fallstudie, där urvalet av informanter har skett utifrån ett kombinerat subjektivt- och snöbollsurval. De slutsatser som kan poängteras utifrån undersökningens resultatet, är att ingen av informanterna ensidigt har betonat kunskapsbegreppet, utan lärarna har en viss förståelse för kunskapens relativitet. I detta fall rör det sig om uppfattningen att kunskapsformerna utgör varandras förutsättningar. Informanterna har dock utifrån ett jämförelseperspektiv dem emellan kommit att beakta kunskapens differenta aspekter och former i skiftande grad (mer eller mindre). När det gäller lärarnas sammantagna konstruktiva kunskapssyn, är den förhållandevis lågt förankrad i deras uttalande/uppfattningar, i paritet med de övriga kunskapsaspekterna. Härigenom kan studien påvisa en slags diskrepans eller åtskillnad mellan styrdokument och lärarna på fältet, eftersom tre av fyra informanter ger en svag tendens till konstruktivistisk syn på kunskapen. För undervisningsmetodikens vidkommande angavs en något mer konstruktiv uppfattning i intervjusvaren, mycket beroende på att samtliga lärare förespråkar ett varierat undervisningsupplägg. Detta stämmer väl överens med de angivelser som anges i läroplanen för gymnasieskolan. Lärarnas undervisningsvariation utgår dock från det traditionella förmedlandet av fakta/information, som mycket väl kan bryta mot tanken av ett mer elevaktivt arbetssätt i skolundervisningen.

    Abstract [en]

    Aim To explore and describe changes in self-assessed clinical competence and the need for further training among newly graduated Registered Nurses during their first 15 months of professional work in acute care hospital settings. Design Quantitative longitudinal design. Methods The 50-item Professional Nurse Self-Assessment Scale of clinical core competencies II was used. A total of 45 newly graduated Registered Nurses answered the questionnaire at four different occasions. Data were collected after 2, 5, 9 and 15 months of working experience. Result The components "ethical decision-making," "cooperation and consultation" and "clinical leadership" were rated highest in clinical competence and lowest in need for further training. The components "professional development" and "critical thinking" were rated lowest in clinical competence and "direct clinical practice" rated highest in need for further training. The clinical competence increased significant between 9-15 months, with the exception of "critical thinking" and need for further training decreased significantly between 9-15 months, with the exception of "critical thinking."

    Abstract [en]

    The psycho-social dimension of pain and health-related quality of life in the oldest old Background:  Chronic pain has an impact on the physical and social functioning of older people which in turn may worsen their health-related quality of life. Research with focus on prolonged extensive pain in the most elderly and how pain may interfere with their life situation is scarce. Aims:  The aims were to describe and investigate pain from a multidimensional point of view (duration, location, psycho-social) and health-related quality of life as well as to compare sex and age groups in people aged 80 years and over. Methods:  In this cross-sectional study, a total of 225 of 282 people responded to a questionnaire consisting of two instruments and background questions. The psycho-social dimension of pain was measured using the Multidimensional Pain Inventory-Swedish language version (MPI-S) with five scales: Pain Severity, Interference, Life Control, Affective Distress and Social Support. Health-related quality of life was measured using the Short Form Health Survey-12 (SF-12). Results:  Median duration of pain was 9.0 years, and the mean number of pain locations was 2.04. The MPI-S scale Interference with a negative orientation had the highest mean score, while the mean score for Social Support was the highest for the scales with a positive orientation. The duration of pain was significantly greater for women, and those aged 80-85 years had higher pain severity than those aged >86. Participants with a lower health-related quality of life experienced significantly more severe pain, were more troubled with pain and had less control of their life. Conclusions:  Older people with prolonged pain suffered from a low health-related quality of life. Pain interfered with their lives and contributed to diminished control in their daily lives. Nurses are essential for the identification and prevention of pain and should be aware of how pain affects older people's physical, mental and social health.

    Abstract [en]

    Language is an important part of mathematics education. Research shows that language is significant for knowledge development and that there is a connection between linguistic and mathematical ability. Investigations have shown, though, that the increased focus on communication and pupil interaction within the mathematics education, recommended in the curriculum and syllabus, have not yet reached the desired effect. In order to find out about teachers’ views on the significance of language in mathematics education, and also to get an update of the current educational situation from a linguistic perspective, a qualitative investigation has been made among six primary-school teachers.

    The investigation shows that all teachers interviewed believe language to be important in mathematics education. They do, however, differ in their opinions of where the significance lies. The main part of mathematics lessons is, as noted in previous investigations, used for individual schoolwork, even though half the group of teachers actively practise mathematical communication amongst the pupils. One of the conclusions that can be drawn from this investigation is that if the syllabus’ objective about communicative ability is to be achieved, the pupils must be allowed to write and discuss mathematical issues on a regular basis.

    Sammandrag

    I förskolan, skolan och på fritidshemmen uppstår dagligen konflikter, därför är det viktigt att ha bra strategier hur de skall bemötas. Syftet med arbetet är att ta reda på hur pedagoger arbetar med att förebygga och hantera konflikter. Utifrån frågeställningarna, hur pedagoger arbetar för att förebygga och hantera barns konflikter på fritidshemmet har jag uppnått mitt syfte. Jag använde mig av metod i form av intervjuer av sex stycken fritidspedagoger som arbetar på fritidshem och i skolan. Resultatet av min undersökning visar att fritidspedagoger arbetar aktivt med att hantera och förebygga konflikter. Pedagogerna ansåg att en konflikt är när två eller flera individer inte kommer överens. Alla pedagoger använder samtalsforum som förebyggande arbete. Dessutom visade resultatet att ingen av pedagogerna anser sig använda någon specifik metod vid konflikthantering. Min slutsats är att pedagoger på fritidshem arbetar förebyggande genom det sociala klimatet. Vid konflikthantering använder de sig av någon form av medling.

    Abstract [en]

    As a part of servicescape music tempo can influence individuals during weight training at the gym.  The tempo of music can affect the customer emotionally and contribute to their service experience.  The customer’s internal response to the servicescape will consequently influence their outward behaviour towards the company. The behaviour can be classified into two dimensions, either an approach or avoidance behaviour. The purpose of this study was to examine how music tempo influences the individual during weight training at the gym and affect the external behaviour towards the company.

    Mitt syfte med detta examensarbete var att ta reda på trosrörelsens argument för kristna friskolor och se på deras motiv och mål med dem. Detta ville jag besvara med följande frågeställning: Vad finns det för argument för att starta kristna friskolor inom trosrörelsen? Jag utgick från material som trosrörelsen själva står bakom; böcker, häften och Livets Ords hemsida på Internet. Dessutom intervjuade jag Maj-Kristin Svedlund, Rektor på Livets Ords Kristna Skola. Jag valde att efter inledningen presentera de argument jag kunde finna i det material jag använde mig av. Sedan redovisade jag intervjun med Maj-Kristin Svedlund. Det jag kom fram till både i litteraturen och i intervjun var att deras främsta argument för att starta kristna friskolor, är den att det är föräldrarna som har ansvaret för barnens fostran och utbildning. Därför är det självklart för dem att det skall finnas kristna friskolor. De hänvisade till att den allmänna skolan vilar på en humanistisk grund vilket de inte kan acceptera, då de vill bygga sin skola med Bibeln som grund. Med sina kristna skolor vill de fostra barnen till att bli ”medel för väckelse”, eller ”medel i reformation”, dvs det att barnen skall bli kristna som går ut och påverkar det samhälle de lever i. I min diskussion tittade jag sedan på hur deras argument förhöll sig mot den svenska skollagen. Jag kom fram till att de uppfyllde skollagen på de punkter jag granskade dem.

    The purpose of my study is to illumine the aesthetic learning process significant in the preschool. Focus has been on allowing educators in different preschools to answer questions valid the use of aesthetic learning processes. I chose to do my study using an opinion poll and a literature review.

     

    The result shows that the preschools use aesthetic learning processes and according to the educator’s aesthetic learning process is a very important tool for education in the preschool.  The notable in this study is that the educators have different views of what aesthetic means. The first view is that you only work with aesthetic subjects. The other view about aesthetic learning process is that it is about gathering theoretic knowledge’s with help of aesthetic activities. Furthermore in the result you can see that the aesthetic learning processes are not getting the time that is needed. Instead of letting the children get the whole knowledge the educators must have short teaching elements where they often use activities that they are comfortable with and also knows how long time it takes. It is important not to interrupt the aesthetic learning processes too early. The children must take part of the entire education, where reflections and interpretation of the result is listed.

    As all education in the preschool, aesthetic learning process require their own rhythm and tempo. It is important that all children participate in the aesthetic learning from their own conditions.

    In order to obtain the positive effects of aesthetic learning in the preschool it requires that the aesthetic learning process can be given place in the education and that the educators challenge their self and the children in different aesthetic activities.

    Vid bearbetning av fram och bakramar till hjullastare används bearbetningsfixturer för att hålla ramarna på plats under de olika operationerna. Ramarna lyfts in i respektive fixtur med hjälp av en telfer och ett specialkonstruerat lyftverktyg. Bakramarna måste lyftas in i fixturen med sidan uppåt, och hänga så vågrätt som möjligt, vilket gör att hanteringen av dessa försvåras. Uppgift: · Att anpassa hanteringen av bakram till hjullastarmodell L220E så att den laddas rätt i fixturen. · Kritiskt granska befintliga lyftverktyg med avseende på konstruktion samt genomföra eventuella ny/omkonstruktioner av befintliga lyftverktyg. Vid granskning av befintlig lösning, kan konstateras att dagens tillvägagångssätt både skadar ram och golv. Dessutom sker proceduren på ett något okontrollerat sätt, som kan innebära fara för personalen. Detta har bl.a. visat sig genom att det befintliga lyftverktygets överlastindikator har lösts ut vid upprepade tillfällen. P.g.a. överbelastning och felkonstruerat verktyg har sprickor i verktyget uppstått. Lösningen på problemet bygger på att ramen inledningsvis lyfts rakt upp i tre punkter. Ramens ena långsida lyfts med ett lyftok i två punkter. Under oket hänger en eldriven kättingtelfer. Dess lyftkrok fästs i en vändhake på ramens motsatta långsida. När ramen har lyfts släpps ena sidan ner genom att telferns kätting körs ut. Ramen blir då hängande i två punkter med ena långsidan nedåt. Ramen kan nu laddas i bearbetningsfixturen. Efter bearbetning vänds ramen tillbaka och sänks ner i omvänd procedur. Lösningen på problemet innebär att hanteringen av bakramar vid laddning av bearbetningsfixturer sker på ett säkert, kontrollerat och smidigt sätt. Konceptet medger att verktyget med enkla modifieringar, kan användas även till andra storlekar på bakramar.

    Abstract [sv]

    Syftet med studien är att fördjupa kunskapen om hur projektbaserat arbete i offentlig förvaltning kan upplevas av de anställda, fokus ligger på motivationsfaktorer. Studien hämtar sin empiri från en avdelning som gått från att vara en traditionell kommunal verksamhet till att jobba helt projektbaserat. De respondenter som medverkar i studien har mellan åtta och tjugo års yrkeserfarenhet och har varit anställda i den undersökta organisationen mellan ett och tre år. Analysen av det insamlade materialet genererade fyra teman;

    • Cheferna står alltid bakom oss
    • Vi är kompetenta och vi utvecklas
    • Gemensam arbetsstruktur skapar ett vi
    • Det är okej att pröva

    Bilden som framträder visar en avdelning som genomsyras av en organisatorisk struktur med en medveten arbetsmetod. Lärande sker mellan medarbetare som är experter inom sina respektive verksamhetsområden och där verksamhetens struktur och en prestigelöshet uppmuntrar en lärande organisation. Medarbetarna känner stort självbestämmande genom ett ledarskap som är delegerande och stödjande.  

    Genom att ta del av studiens resultat kan en verksamhet på gång att börja arbeta i projektform struktureras och organiseras så att medarbetarna upplever motivation och på bästa sätt ges förutsättningar att utföra sina uppdrag.

    Abstract [sv]

    Mitt syfte med detta arbete var att forska om ledarskap i läraryrket och ta reda på vilka egenskaper en lärare behöver för att kunna agera som ledare. För att svara på detta har jag sökt efter kunskap i litteratur samt genomfört en enkätundersökning hos lärare som arbetar på låg och mellanstadiet på en skola i mellersta Sverige. Resultatet har visat att ledaren kan agera på olika sätt, från ett auktoritärt ledarskap till ett som är ”låt-gå” inriktat. Vilket sätt som är lämpligast beror på vilken mognadsnivå gruppen befinner sig i. Undersökning har även visat att ledaren bör ha god psykisk och fysisk hälsa för att nå framgång i sitt ledarskap.

    Syftet med mitt examensarbete är att undersöka hur man kan arbeta för att på bästa sätt hjälpa barn med koncentrationssvårigheter. För att kunna hjälpa dessa barn måste man först ha en förförståelse till begreppet koncentrationssvårighet. Därför har jag inledningsvis för min egen skull och för alla läsares skull, med hjälp av olika författare, redogjort för hur man kan tolka ordet koncentrationssvårighet. Jag har valt att göra min undersökning med hjälp av intervjuer. Jag har använt mig av strukturerade frågor, men gett utrymme för öppna svar. Det har också funnits utrymme för följdfrågor, där de haft möjlighet att utveckla sina svar. Jag har intervjuat tre förskollärare ifrån tre olika förskolor. I studien har pedagogerna beskrivit barnens koncentrationssvårigheter på ungefär samma sätt. De vanligaste begreppen är svårigheter med uppmärksamhet, motorik och uthållighet. En del har även svårigheter att anpassa aktivitetsnivån efter det som situationen kräver. Barnen är i behov av förberedelser inför nya situationer, behov av stöd och bekräftelse. Flertalet av barnen har svårigheter vid fri aktivitet och är ofta inblandade i konflikter. I arbetet med barn med koncentrationssvårigheter ska barnens behov vara utgångspunkten för att arbetet i förskolan ska fungera. Det viktigaste är att vi som pedagoger ser varje enskilt barn, att de blir bekräftade och accepterade precis som de är. En viktig slutsats som jag kan dra är att pedagogerna i barnens omgivning måste ha goda kunskaper om, samt vara väl insatta i problematiken för att arbetet ska fungera och ge positivt resultat.     Abstract [en]

    The aim of this study is to examine how some teachers in the Swedish Elementary School work with language-, reading- and writing to meet the diversity of students within the classroom and these teachers’ opinions about inclusion in these contexts.

     

    The method used is qualitative, semi-structured interviews. Theory as a starting point is the socio-cultural perspektive on learning.

     

    The results show that teachers work with certain awareness according to several different methods and strategies within the context of language-, reading- and writing, where all students are included. This study also shows that teachers taken part in further-education has a greater knowledge about inclusive reading and writing methods. There is a great interest among teachers to cooperate and develope their teaching practices.

     

    The advantages with inclusive teaching practices are that students see and learn to accept each others differences and they are one another’s access in different learning situations. At the same time it is shown that there are practical difficulties that requires knowledge, support and resources.

    The purpose of this essay is to investigate the Swedish, Australian and English curriculum and how the schools are expected to work with teaching students about democracy. The main procedure of this essay has been reading all the curriculums and then breaking them down into categories. This method has been used to be able to see similarities and differences between the countries and their curriculums. The categories used has been two main ones: The Holistic and The Problematization. The category Problematization has then been broken down into three sub-categories: The System, The Values and The Influence. This method has also been used to be able to see in which category the countries curriculums put the most emphasis in. The conclusion of this essay is that all countries are expected to work with teaching students about democracy but in different ways. The Swedish curriculum puts a lot of emphasis in the category Values, the Australian Curriculum puts a lot of emphasis in teaching their students about the category System and the English one puts a lot of emphasis in Problematization but has an even distribution among the sub-categories.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study is to examine the purpose of literature instruction in English 5, 6 and 7. The questions that are examined are; the purpose of literature instruction in English, which methods are used by the teachers and how teachers choose which literature to include. The study is qualitative and is based on an interview study in which three teachers that currently teach English 5, 6 and 7 participated. These interviews are presented and discussed in relation to the curriculum, GY11, course documents and research in the area. The results show that teachers use literature to achieve a number of goals set by the curriculum and course documents, and that they often choose to include extensive reading in courses even when it is not demanded. The teachers use several methods, where discussions and written assignments complement each other. Literature selection is based on a careful balance between getting students motivated to read the assigned literature and achieving the intended purpose.

    Abstract [en]

    This essay examines gender normative and patriarchal elements of the popular fairy            tale Sleeping Beauty in order to expose how patriarchal ideals are upheld. The reason for this is that children may internalize the values taught in these stories, which may lead to them perpetuating patriarchal ideals and gender normative behavior. The popular version of this fairy tale, made by Disney, follows many of the typical patriarchal ideals with a strong male hero, a wicked female witch and a weak and submissive young female, close to nature. This is contrasted by a modern retelling by Cameron Dokey that is, in many ways, gender subversive and challenges the traditional gender roles and attributes. This essay finds that the version made by Disney is a product of its time, and portrays ideals from that period that could affect children of today into internalizing archaic patriarchal ideals. Dokey’s version is better adapted to the current socio-cultural environment and succeeds in aligning the story with modern values and provides a better option to teach children the actual values and gender roles of our society.

    Mediebruset är i denna tid enormt och konkurrensen om potentiella kunder är hård att slåss om för företag. Det har blivit allt viktigare för sändare av reklambudskap att jobba effektivt med kommunikation, för att behålla befintliga kunder och för att kunna locka nya. Den första delen i den här uppsatsen syftade till att med hjälp av en kvalitativ litteraturundersökning utforska vad som gör ett reklambudskap kommunikativt framgångsrikt. Med framgångsrik kommunikation menades här: ”A har kommunicerat effektivt med B när B reagerar på det sätt A vill att han ska göra” Litteraturundersökningen i arbetet visade på reklambudskapets uppgift i den totala marknadsföringen. Reklam är ett verktyg för att hjälpa företag som sändare att nå sina mål . Kommunikation kan inte hänga löst i en tråd, utan måste vara förankrad i hela företagets organisation genom vision, affärsidé, företagsfilosofi, kärnvärden och kultur . Forskare har vidare, enligt den litteratur som undersöktes, ganska lika uppfattningar när det gäller kommunikationsplanering. De anser det viktigt att planera kommunikation för att reklambudskap ska bli framgångsrika. De största och mest betydelsefulla stegen i kommunikationsplanering visade sig vara att sätta upp kommunikationsmål, definiera målgrupp, göra medieval och utarbeta budskap. Genom att följa dessa steg arbetades reklambudskap fram, i form av annonser för en given produkt. Därigenom kunde delar av teorin testas i praktiken och utav detta gick det att konstatera att man har god nytta av teorin då man praktiskt utformar reklambudskap. Avslutningsvis undersöktes hur annonserna kommunicerade med målgruppen för dem. Detta skedde genom kvalitativa fokusintervjuer med utvalda deltagare. Intervjuerna gav konkret feedback och visade att man som sändare och kreatör har mycket god vägledning av att testa reklam innan den realiseras, i t ex en kampanj. Sammantaget gav det här arbetet både teoretisk och praktisk kunskap när det gäller kommunikation och skapande av reklambudskap.

    Social media is getting more and more important for both customers and companies as the use of social media increases each year. Previous research shows that there is a positive link between the use of social media and online shopping. The purpose of this study is to explore which factors that drives the purchases of clothes online. The factors studied are the traditional factors price, quality and word-of-mouth and the digital factors electronic word-of-mouth, influencers and ads on social media. The study has been limited to the social platforms Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat. In the study a quantitative method has been used and data was collected through a survey. The data material consists of responses from 145 respondents and have been statistically analysed through a bivariate and multivariate analysis in SPSS. The result shows that the factors that have an impact on the customer's online shopping behaviour are price, eWOM, influencers and ads, and that Instagram is the platform where customers are most affected.

    The study has contributed with an increased understanding of the factors that influence the customer's online clothing purchases, and what social media platform companies should focus their marketing to. The study has also shown that eWOM is becoming more important for customers compared to WOM, which has decreased in relevance for the customers in this context.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose with this essay is to find out which demands the syllabus for the Swedish language make on the pupils in compulsory school compared to some active teachers’ point of view. The method I have used to find out is a qualitative interview, where I have interviewed four Swedish teachers of various professional experiences.

    After the change of government in 1991, the new curriculum committee had a mission where the goal was to develop the best school in Europe. A national target was introduced and the goals were proposed to be of two kinds; goals to strive for and goals to achieve. A problem in this is that the knowledge that pupils in ninth grade will acquire, is formulated in such a manner so that not even experts in each subject would live up to the demands placed on the students. It is in many cases the teachers' task to break down these goals and present them in a simplified way so that the students can achieve the objectives that are set on them and nowhere in the goalsetting takes no account of the fact that many students go through a major change in their lives, namely puberty.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis consists of four papers. the first is devoted to discrete velocity models, the second to hydrodynamic equation beyond Navier-Stokes level, the third to a multi-linear Maxwell model for economic or social dynamics and the fourth is devoted to a function related to the Riemann zeta-function.

    In Paper 1, we consider the general problem of construction and classification of normal, i.e. without spurious invariants, discrete velocity models (DVM) of the classical Boltzman equation. We explain in detail how this problem can be solved and present a complete classification of normal plane DVMs with relatively small number n of velocities (n≤10). Some results for models with larger number of velocities are also presented.

    In Paper 2, we discuss hydrodynamics at the Burnett level. Since the Burnett equations are ill-posed, we describe how to make a regularization of these. We derive the well-posed generalized Burnett equations (GBEs) and discuss briefly an optimal choice of free parameters and consider a specific version of these equations. Finally we prove linear stability for GBE and present some numerical result on the sound propagationbased on GBEs.

    In Paper 3, we study a Maxwell kinetic model of socio-economic behavior. The model can predict a time dependent distribution of wealth among the participants in economic games with an arbitrary, but sufficiently large, number of players. The model depends on three different positive parameters {γ,q,s} where s and q are fixed by market conditions and γ is a control parameter. In particular, we investigate the efficiency of control. Some exact solutions and numerical examples are presented.

    In Paper 4, we study a special function u(s,x), closely connected to the Riemann zeta-function ζ(s), where s is a complex number. We study in detail the properties of u(s,x) and in particular the location of its zeros s(x), for various x≥0. For x=0 the zeros s(0) coincide with non-trivial zeros of ζ(s). We perform a detailed numerical study of trajectories of various zeros s(x) of u(s,x).

    Abstract [en]

    Oxalate-degrading enzymes were investigated with focus on potential applications in the pulp and paper industry and in active packaging. Changes introduced to make the pulp and paper industry more environmentally friendly, such as recirculation of process-water streams and elementary chlorine free bleaching of pulp, have led to increasing problems with precipitation of calcium oxalate. The potential of using enzymes for degradation of oxalic acid in industrial bleaching filtrates was explored to find a way to decrease the problem.

    The studies included chemical characterization and enzymatic treatments of 34 filtrates from kraft, mechanical, and sulfite pulping. Eight oxalate-degrading enzymes were included in the experiments. The treatments of the filtrates were affected by substances that inhibit oxalate-degrading enzymes. Multivariate data analysis, analytical treatment of filtrates with ion-exchange resins, and analysis of the effects of separate compounds on the enzyme activity were employed as tools to investigate inhibiting substances and groups of inhibitors. The experiments with ion-exchangers indicated that the inhibitors included anions, cations, as well as uncharged substances. Sulfite (≥1 mM) caused complete or almost complete inhibition of all oxalate-degrading enzymes so far examined, while the effects of chlorine oxyanions differed for the various enzymes investigated. A newly discovered oxalate decarboxylase was chosen for experiments performed directly in a mill producing mechanical pulp. The new enzyme degraded 70% of the oxalic acid in one hour, while the well-characterized oxalate decarboxylase from Aspergillus niger degraded <5% of the oxalic acid during the same period of time.

    Oxalate decarboxylase from the white-rot basidiomycete fungus Trametes versicolor was purified by using chromatographic methods and characterized with gel electrophoresis and tandem mass spectrometry. Results indicate that it is a 69-kDa heavily glycosylated enzyme with optimal activity at pH 2.5.

    Experiments designed to investigate the potential of using oxalate oxidase from barley in active packaging showed that it could be entrapped with retained catalytic activity in a latex-polymer matrix. Furthermore, the experiments indicate that oxalate oxidase can be used in active packaging either as an oxalic acid scavenger or as an oxygen scavenger.

    Abstract [en]

    Oxalate oxidase has potential to act as an oxygen scavenger in active packaging to increase the shelf-life of food and beverages, while simultaneously producing the protective packaging gas carbon dioxide. This study shows that oxalate oxidase from barley can be immobilized with retained catalytic activity through entrapment in a latex polymer matrix. Conditions for formation of film containing oxalate oxidase have been evaluated as well as effects of storage and latex on enzyme activity, migration of enzyme in films, and the ability of the latex films to resist higher temperatures. Drying of enzyme-containing latex films at 75 °C prior to conditioning at 30 °C resulted in higher activity than drying solely at 30 °C, or drying at 95 °C or 105 °C followed by conditioning at 30 °C. Storage of films in air at 4 °C for 14 days did not negatively affect the enzymatic activity. Inclusion of catalase in films with oxalate oxidase effectively prevented release of hydrogen peroxide. The results suggest that the immobilized enzyme can successfully be used both as an oxygen scavenger and as an oxalic-acid scavenger.
