Family language policy in Swedish-English families: Rhizomatic conceptualisations2023In: EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF APPLIED LINGUISTICS, ISSN 2192-9521, Vol. 11, no 2, p. 312-340Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Although past research has established that family language policies are composed of numerous complex, entangled, heterogenous elements, as of yet, most works grounded within this research paradigm do not attempt to fully embrace this complexity. This article argues that the complexity can be more fully engaged with by conceptualising a family language policy as a rhizomatic system which consists of a multiplicity of temporary assemblages. Drawing on video recordings, interviews, and stimulated recall protocols from a project on the dimensions of language in Swedish-English families, this article aims to consider how interactional episodes within these families can be viewed as an assemblage of material elements, experiences, agential forces, and conceptual discourses. It is argued that through the analysis of multiple assemblages, and through the consideration of the connectivity between such assemblages, that a holistic picture of the rhizomatic structure that is a family language policy begins to be built.

    Abstract [en]

This study adopts a conversation analytic approach to present a close analysis of the sequential organisa-tion of a parent-child homework activity in a Swedish-English bi-national family. Families formed withinmigration contexts are increasingly common in an ever-globalised world, but current research has notfully investigated how parent-child homework practices are affected by parents who possess differinglevels of expertise in the societal language. This article examines a number of episodes where the pro-gressivity of a homework activity is halted due to language-related epistemic issues. More specifically, these halts in progressivity are caused due to the homework tasks being written in Swedish in combina-tion with the English mother’s lack of language expertise in Swedish. The episodes exemplify how theseepistemic deadlocks are resolved through the mobilisation of a more knowledgeable party, the Swedishfather, who orients to translation as a trouble resolution tool which facilitates epistemic progression andthe progressivity of the homework activity.

Homework in a transnational family: Mobilizing others to resolve language-related epistemic issues2021Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper adopts a conversation analytic approach and presents two excerpts from a detailed analysis of the sequential organization of a parent-child homework activity in a Swedish-English transnational family. The data analyzed come from participant-recorded videos, which are part of a larger ethnographic project on language practices in bilingual families in Sweden. An implicit policy in Sweden exists in which parents are expected to assist with their children’s homework (Forsberg, 2007), but the knowledge required for this assistance is not necessarily possessed in full by parents in transnational families. Drawing upon work on epistemics in interaction (Heritage, 2012), a number of sequences are examined where the progressivity of the homework activity is halted due to languagerelated epistemic issues. More specifically, these halts in progressivity are caused due to the homework tasks being written in Swedish in combination with the English mother’s lack of language expertise in Swedish. The sequences exemplify how these epistemic deadlocks are resolved through the mobilization of a more knowledgeable party (Betz, Taleghani-Nikazm, & Golato, 2020), the Swedish father. Upon his mobilization, the Swedish father orients to translation as a trouble resolution tool which facilitates epistemic progression and the progressivity of the homework activity. The presentation addresses how such mobilizations are dependent on participants’ monitoring of the local epistemic ecology, as well as the larger activity trajectory, and how both of these are intimately connected with co-participants’ linguistic abilities.

Interaction orders in bilingual families and their connection to lived experiences of language.2021Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Drawing on ethnographic data from two projects on the home language practices of bilingual families living in Sweden, I aim to show how these practices are intimately connected with the family members’ historical bodies (Scollon & Scollon, 2004), in particular, their lived experiences of language (Busch, 2017). I consider how such past lived experiences impact family members’ current interpretation of conceptual discourses in place, as well as their language ideologies, which in turn influence their enacted linguistic repertoires. I further consider how family members’ shifting chronotopic identities (Blommaert & De Fina, 2016), can be traced to lived experiences with language at specific points in space and time. Although often considered in relation to the individual, I also aim to highlight how within the family context, lived experiences with language are frequently co-constructed between family members due to the parallel, intimately connected life trajectories that are often seen within members of the same family.

Language, identity, and the body in relation to others: Sensemaking in a new migratory space2023In: Dynamics of multilingualism: Spatialised repertoires and representations in unstable times / [ed] Maria Kuteeva & Caroline Kerfoot, Palgrave Macmillan, 2023Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study considers how linguistic and spatial repertoires are experienced and understood by English-origin adults who now reside in Sweden. These individuals come from a space where they are familiar with the social rules and language practices but have entered a new space where this is not the case. Particular focus is given to the role that lived experiences of language play in the construction of participants’ repertoires, and most importantly, how lived experiences moderate the availability and accessibility of an individual’s acquired repertoire. The study locates itself within the phenomenological tradition that draws on the idea of the intersubjective nature of perception and aims to uncover how an individual perceives and makes sense of language and identity in this context. Equally relevant, and also borrowed from phenomenology, is the notion of the ‘body image’, which is seen as being formed from the social, relational, and inter-human interactions of a subject, and importantly for this study is the idea that the body image is key in understanding current interactional practices as well as expectations of interaction and wider ideologies of communication. In order to access participants’ experiences, I draw on biographical interviews in which participants elaborate on their past and present lives. The findings show that participants consistently compare their body-in-relation-to-others that they come into contact with in the new space. In order to do this, participants construct homogenous groups of ‘Swedes’ and ‘immigrants’, who in turn become enregistered with specific ideologies of communication. Additionally, participants construct spaces of potentialities regarding how they desire for their children to embody ‘Britishness’, which is closely linked to managing their children’s linguistic repertoires, and spaces of constraint, where participants consider how the local environment restricts their ability to deploy their entire communicative repertoire.

Language practices in Swedish-English families2023Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation examines the family language practices of Swedish-English families using an interdisciplinary and mixed-method approach. The principal aim is to empirically document what these practices are, as well as how practices interact with various ideological, conceptual, and contextual factors.

The dissertation is composed of four empirical studies and a comprehensive summary with seven chapters. In order to engage with the complex, multidimensional nature of bilingual family language practices, the empirical studies adopt four different theoretical and methodological frameworks. Study I uses a large-scale quantitative approach to investigate the connection between declared family language practices and macro societal factors. Study II adopts a conversation analytic approach to examine the local sequential context of family language practices. Study III uses a rhizomatic discourse analytic approach, which considers how family language practices can be conceptualised as an assemblage of semiotic resources, objects, space, and time. Finally, Study IV focuses on the affective and psychological dimensions of language practices by adopting an interpretative phenomenological approach that explores participants’ thoughts, feelings, and their lived experiences with language.

The chapters of the comprehensive summary discuss the four empirical studies in relation to an expanded theoretical framework and in relation to each other. Although the epistemological and theoretical perspectives adopted in the four studies are different, they all consider how language practices are fundamentally situated in the local context of occurrence. Each study illuminates a portion of this local context, which, when triangulated, leads to a richer understanding of language practices than would be obtained with a single approach alone. In addition, the findings emphasise and exemplify how the context-sensitive dimensions of agency, identity, and emotion are inherently connected to language practices in bilingual families.

    Abstract [en]

By means of a large-scale quantitative approach, this study examines the declared family language practices of Swedish-English bilingual families living in Sweden, and how an array of family-external and family-internal social factors correlate with divergences in these practices. For the purpose of this study, a Swedish-English bilingual family consists of two parents, one of which is an L1 English speaker, and the other is an L1 Swedish speaker, as well as their children. The data comes from a digital questionnaire completed by 438 families, which was analysed using non-parametric statistics. The results show that despite a preference for English amongst the parents in these families, their children are more likely to use Swedish in sibling interaction, which can be regarded as an indication of the influence of wider society on home language practices. The results also show that a number of social factors correlated with a divergence in declared language practices in these families, namely, parental occupation, the migratory history of the family, parent’s marital status, family involvement in parent-child English speaking groups, and whether the mother or the father was the L1 English speaker. Other typically cited social factors, such as parental education level, showed no significant correlation with declared language practices in these families. The study comments on raising bilingual children in a context where both languages are valued in society, and the implications for this internationally. The study also exemplifies the complex, context sensitive situation that is encountered when attempting to fully understand family language policies more generally.

Understanding Complexity in The Family Language Policy of Swedish-British Families2021Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Family Language Policy (FLP), the explicit planning as well as the implicit, covert and unarticulated measures regarding management of languages in the family domain, has received increased scholarly attention in the last decade. Many past studies draw on Spolsky’s (2004) tripartite model of language policy, which views language policy as the culmination of language practices, language ideologies, and language management. Others have drawn on Curdt-Christiansen’s (2009) model of FLP, which considers socioeconomic, sociopolitical, sociocultural, and sociolinguistic factors and their influence on FLPs. Despite this, most past studies do not attempt to fully integrate all of these areas into their analyses. In this presentation, I propose adopting assemblage theory (Deleuze & Guattari, 1987) as a means for analysing and combining these complex, ongoing and intertwined processes, which ultimately combine to create a FLP. I draw on video-ethnographic and interview data from Swedish-British families in order to show how key moments from the data can be understood as the assemblage of diverse elements. In keeping with the theme of the conference, I pay particular attention to how recent global developments such as Brexit play a mediating role in these assemblages, and thus in the FLPs of Swedish-British families.

Language practice and ideology in trans-national multilingual families: Focus on English2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Past research into English as a lingua franca (ELF) has primarily focused on the domains of academia and business (e.g. Kankaanranta and Louhiala-Salminen 2010; Mauranen 2012), with little focus on the use of ELF in the family context (see, however, Pietikäinen 2014). In parallel to that, Family Language Policy (FLP) has emerged as a field of interest bridging the areas of language acquisition and language management (e.g. King et al. 2008; Schwartz 2010). However, in the majority of the cases, research on FLP has been concerned with the maintenance of migrant or minority languages. As a consequence, the lingua franca use of English in multilingual families has not featured prominently in FLP research.

In this presentation we consider ELF in the family context and present preliminary findings from a series of semi-structured interviews taken from our study focusing on transnational intermarried couples who reside in Sweden. We examine the role that ELF and other languages play in the lives of these families with regards to intrafamilial and extrafamilial language use. The results highlight the complex multilingual lives of the informants and give insight into how different language ideologies manifest themselves in the family context. Furthermore, we relate our findings to Blommaert & Backus (2011) and consider what it means to ‘know’ a language in the context of enhanced complexity, superdiversity and transnational mobility.

Har NPM påverkat kommunernas ledning?: En undersökning om Eskilstuna kommunkoncern2019Student paper second term, 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Titel: Hållbar utveckling – med framtiden som intressent

    Ämne: Företagsekonomi, kandidatuppsats, 15 hp

Författare: Björn Martinsson  och Mattias Robertsson

    Handledare: Mikael Johnson

Upplevelser av 0-HLR i hemsjukvård: - Distriktssköterskors och sjuksköterskors perspektiv2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstact

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Within Swedish Secondary Schools, truancy has been an increasing concern over the last eleven years. A specific form of truancy is so called in-school truancy where the student is basically within the school corridors but to a lesser degree attends the lessons. Despite the well documented risks concerning for example employment, income and health and the vast literature demonstrating the importance of teacher experience to promote successful student outcomes, little attention has been given to both teacher experience of truancy and in-school truants in a Swedish context. This master thesis explores Swedish secondary teachers’ experience of working with in-school truants. Four secondary teachers working on an Introduction Program in Sweden were interviewed. The interviews were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Through this analysis six comprehensive themes were constructed: Multifaceted Role- and Responsibility Description, Structure for Security and Consensus, Hope and Credence Embodied, Relationship building Obstacles and Value, Meaningful, Manageable and Rewarding Work and Solidarity as the Solution and Shield. Understanding of the results was deepened through theoretical connections to results that were particularly distinctive. Some of the issues discussed were theories related to work culture, collegial support, self-efficacy, roles, responsibility, relationship building and teacher-student relationships. The results show that the teachers who participated experience their work with this group of students as one with extra demands. Despite extra demands, neither an excess of demands nor unmanageability were experienced. Rather a conviction was evident regarding the possibility to influence these students despite their form of truancy as well as a feeling of purposeful work. This was something which partly distinguished the findings from previous literature found on the subject. The teachers' experiences further suggest that colleagues and work culture constitute important aspects of the work experience. It is also evident that the teachers involved in this study work within a dynamic field where the teacher needs to balance and continuously reflect upon their way of working. Finally, from the teachers’ perspective, in-school truancy was not considered the most problematic or relevant to distinguish from other sorts of truancy.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

I 63 kap.

Testing the structural and cross-cultural validity of the KIDSCREEN-27 quality of life questionnaire2007In: Quality of Life Research, ISSN 0962-9343, E-ISSN 1573-2649, Vol. 16, no 8, p. 1335-1345Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Objectives

The aim of this study is to assess the structural and cross-cultural validity of the KIDSCREEN-27 questionnaire.

    Methods

The 27-item version of the KIDSCREEN instrument was derived from a longer 52-item version and was administered to young people aged 8–18 years in 13 European countries in a cross-sectional survey. Structural and cross-cultural validity were tested using multitrait multi-item analysis, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, and Rasch analyses. Zumbo’s logistic regression method was applied to assess differential item functioning (DIF) across countries. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha.

    Results

Responses were obtained from n = 22,827 respondents (response rate 68.9%). For the combined sample from all countries, exploratory factor analysis with procrustean rotations revealed a five-factor structure which explained 56.9% of the variance. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated an acceptable model fit (RMSEA = 0.068, CFI = 0.960). The unidimensionality of all dimensions was confirmed (INFIT: 0.81–1.15). Differential item functioning (DIF) results across the 13 countries showed that 5 items presented uniform DIF whereas 10 displayed non-uniform DIF. Reliability was acceptable (Cronbach’s α = 0.78–0.84 for individual dimensions).

    Conclusions

There was substantial evidence for the cross-cultural equivalence of the KIDSCREEN-27 across the countries studied and the factor structure was highly replicable in individual countries. Further research is needed to correct scores based on DIF results. The KIDSCREEN-27 is a new short and promising tool for use in clinical and epidemiological studies.

The effect of stress on rates of asexual reproduction in an invasive planarian2023In: Ecotoxicology, ISSN 0963-9292, E-ISSN 1573-3017, Vol. 32, p. 1201-1208Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Animal reproduction under stressful conditions is often reduced, with current survival and future reproduction being generally traded off against current reproductive activity. This study examines the impacts of physical and chemical stressors on the rates of asexual reproduction of the invasive planarian Girardia tigrina. 320 wild-caught planaria (mixed size class) were kept individually in Petri dishes such that their individual rates of fission through fragmentation could be easily monitored. Four treatment groups were compared, one chemical (5 mg/L ammonia) and one physical (decapitation), in comparison to a negative control (animals were starved of food) and a positive control where the animals were given an abundance of food. The two treatment groups immediately began reproducing asexually and accumulated the highest number of fissions over the course of the 12-day investigation period, while the positive control only began to fission after 7 days. We propose that the reproductive response observed here is an adaptive one to stressful conditions, whereby the likelihood of survival through numerical abundance is enhanced, although the size and vulnerability of resulting fragments may impose a balancing cost. The response may play a role in the invasiveness of G. tigrina by making it able to colonize environments where adverse conditions prevail.

Effects of parasitic freshwater mussels on their host fishes: a review2022In: Parasitology, ISSN 0031-1820, E-ISSN 1469-8161, Vol. 149, no 14, p. 1958-1975Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Freshwater mussels in the order Unionida are highly adapted to parasitize fish for the primary purpose of dispersal. The parasitic larval stage affixes itself to the gills or fins of the host where it becomes encysted in the tissue, eventually excysting to develop into a free-living adult. Research on the parasitic interactions between unionids and their host fishes has garnered attention recently due to the increase in worldwide preservation efforts surrounding this highly endangered and ecologically significant order. With the exception of heavy infestation events, these mussels cause minor effects to their hosts, typically only observable effect in combination with other stressors. Moreover, the range of effect intensities on the host varies greatly with the species involved in the interaction, an effect that may arise from different evolutionary strategies between long- and short-infesting mussels; a distinction not typically made in conservation practices. Lower growth and reduced osmotic potential in infested hosts are commonly observed and correlated to infestation load. These effects are typically also associated with increases in metabolic rate and behaviour indicative of stress. Host fish seem to compensate for this through a combination of rapid wound healing in the parasitized areas and higher ventilation rates. The findings are heavily biased towards Margaritifera margaritifera, a unique mussel not well suited for cross-species generalizations. Furthermore, the small body of molecular and genetic studies should be expanded as many conclusions are drawn from studies on the ultimate effects of glochidiosis rather than proximate studies on the underlying mechanisms.

    ABSTRACT

Is Civil Society Filling the Gap?

    - Health Care Provision to Irregular Immigrants in Sweden.

An explorative case study of the civil society’s viewpoint on Swedish

immigration policy with focus on irregular immigrant’s right to health care.

Thesis in Political Science (D-level) at Karlstad University by Carin Rodehed

    Spring 2007

    Tutor: Susan Marton

This thesis is an explorative case study on the civil society’s viewpoint on Swedish immigration policy with focus on irregular immigrant’s right to health care. Civil society will in this study refer to voluntary organizations. The purpose is to describe how the

civil society reason around citizenship and human rights, related to the irregular immigrant’s right to health care in Sweden. In order to fulfill the purpose of the thesis a main question was designed:

    · How do the actors in the civil society reason around citizenship and human rights related to irregular immigrants in Sweden?

To be able to answer the main question, two precise questions were composed. These two questions were derived from a theoretical framework that builds upon a discussion of citizen rights versus human rights in a world of sovereign states. These two questions are

    the following:

    · How do the actors in the civil society act regarding irregular immigrant’s access to health care in Sweden?

    · What kind of situation does the civil society encounter regarding irregular immigrant’s access to health care in Sweden?

To be able to answer the research questions as well as fulfilling the purpose of the thesis, interviews were chosen as research approach. By analyzing the data, the following conclusion was made in response to the main research question. The reasoning that was identified regarding citizenship and human rights in this research

was, looking upon the present Swedish legislation, Sweden is running an excluding policy where irregular immigrants are deprived their human rights. This is motivated by their lack of citizenship as well as legal and political status in Sweden. Therefore, the

civil society’s opinion is that Sweden does not follow United Nations declaration of human right in question of irregular immigrant’s right to health care.

    Abstract

This work is about children in sorrow. I have chosen to set the focus on the school and the

teacher’s role in the meeting with mourning children and the difference between boys and

    girls reactions when mourning.

The awareness and the great importance for a teachers knowledge to meet a child in mourning,

is something I myself has experienced when a child in nursery school lost one parent

    through accident.

The result of the study reflects on four teachers and two headmasters experience of children in

sorrow and literature in the subject. It is important that the school and the teachers are aware

of the importance about the knowledge in the subject to be able to meet a mourning child in

    need.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Barns demokratiska röst i rutinsituationer.: En kartläggning av barns demokratiska utrymme i förskolan.2023Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the space that children´s democratic voice has in routine situations in preschool with the aim of mapping the space. The study is carried out with method triangulation where the quantitative consist of observations with a schedule and the qualitative part consists of field notes. The theoretical starting point is Harry Shier, John Dewey and the concept children´s democratic voice. The quantitative results shows that the space for children’s democratic voice in preschool (A) in total achieves a percentage of 58% and 1,3 number of actions/minutes. Results in preschool (B) achieves a percentage of 100% and 0,6 number of actions/minutes. The compilation shows a percentage of 66% and 0,9 number of actions/minutes. The qualitative results show that the forms of children’s democratic voice in routine situations takes place through interactive dialogues with committed and interested educators, children’s oppositions which is partially met and led to a democratic voice partially stops at a democratic act, and that the verbal and physical collaborates to strengthen the communication. Conclusions are that all routine situations exceeds 50% and that democracy is present in these situations. Another conclusion is that TAKK is considered a prerequisite for children’s democratic voice. The last conclusion is that resistance that is met increases the space and creates conditions for developing democratic capabilities.

The ruined remains of a Fuller story - the governess as (un)reliable narrator in Henry James The turn of the screw2001Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Henry James’s The Turn of The Screw is a wonderfully well written horror story, which has been enjoyed by many. There is an overflow of ambiguity and misunderstandings in this novella, and there are a great number of allusions to many things that we will never know the answers to. In the novella, the protagonist is telling the reader about an episode in her life in which she claims she saw ghosts. Since she is the narrator of the major part of the novella one can wonder if she is reliable or not. She tells the reader the story, the intrigues, and how she interprets them and how she interprets the other characters. This paper will focus on the narrator’s reliability, what makes her trustworthy, and what does not make her trustworthy. The narrator’s story is full of ambiguities, and this is why one can doubt her reliability. On the other hand, there are sections where she appears to be a very sane person. Thus, the story could be read as if the narrator is suffering from a mental disease or it can be read as if she is the only one that sees the ghosts. In this paper I will examine different factors that one must have in mind when investigating the narrator’s reliability. I will also give some examples of instances where the narrator seems reliable and other examples of where she seems unreliable.

Sjuksköterskors följsamhet till användning av personlig skyddsutrustning: En litteraturstudie2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

A videotape can easily get students’ attention. With this gained attention the teacher have the power to guide the pupil. The student will use his or her eyes, ears and can also read the subtitles in the target language. This essay looks at how video can help language learners learn and remember words. I have studied investigations and read books concerning video in language teaching. I carried out an investigation were a group of students have worked with a Spanish text where I have underlined thirty words. After the group have worked with the text I divided the group into two. One group watched a movie based on the text the students have read. All students will then had a week to study the words and then they were given a test. Two weeks after they had written the first test, they were given the same test a second time. The essay will show if the videotape will helped students to better remember words.

Geomediatization of public spheres: A space genealogy for emerging datafied societies2021Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The theory of the public sphere succeeds at philosophically providing the back story that links democracy to the media. From the start, it carried the assumption that a shared communicative space was a necessary precondition to explain the link between media and democratic governance. The geomedia refresh—and make accountable—the relevance of space for government. However, the nuances and limitations of geomedia and geodata still require a critical discussion and a prudent approach. This paper deconstructs geomedia as an epistemic assemblage of practices, norms, data, and tools, rather than considering it a single technology. The operation enhances the historical framework by tracing longer temporal lines that show how efforts to politically value places were key for governance even before the commodification of GPS data and locative technologies. A reconciliation with previous social research will help understand the full breadth of the value of the geomedia for democracy today. This paper is organized into four parts: after an initial conceptual review, the paper explores the prehistory of placemaking by linking the understandings of space with the creation of symbolic places for governance. The following section on the modernity of media location deals with the dual role of mapping and universal location as tools for identity building and governance strategies. The paper concludes with a discussion of the geomedia(-ted) public sphere(s) by considering technological policies (from GPS-enabled mobiles to geodata and the internet of things) and the geopolitical implications of such geomedia assemblages on the legitimate governance of communicative spaces.

    Abstract [en]

This project is about predicting energy production for a photovoltaic system that is installed on a building in Karlstad. The aim is to create a model that takes data from the previous day as input and based on that predicts solar energy production 1h ahead. To achieve the purpose of the work, theories on machine learning as well as statistical evaluation methods are presented. The model is implemented using program code in deep learning toolbox in MATLAB. There, it is trained on previous data to find some pattern in the data and based on that predict energy production for 1h ahead given the energy production from the previous 24h. The algorithm used in the project is LSTM. The project also examines how much data back in time the model needs to be trained on to give a good indication of solar energy production. The results show that the best model derives from training models with 1 year of historic data and with specific network settings. Furthermore, models provide an MAE of 0.998kWh and an RMSE of 1.765kWh.

Application of Plasma Desorption Mass Spectrometry to Molecular Weight Determination of Structural Protein from Insect Cuticle1986In: Journal of Mass Spectrometry, ISSN 1076-5174, E-ISSN 1096-9888, Vol. 13, no 12, p. 689-691Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

During sequence determination of a structural protein from the cuticle of the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria, a discrepancy was found between the molecular weight calculated from the sequence data (15 323) and that estimated by SDS-gel electrophoresis (21 600). The protein contains several repeated sequences, and the discrepancy might indicate that part of the sequence was missing or that the protein contained a large prosthetic group. The molecular weight of the protein was determined by 127I-plasma desorption mass spectrometry to be 15 329±50 which confirms the sequence data and shows the molecular weight determination based on SDS-electrophoresis to be too high.

    Abstract [en]

When constructing in urban areas, it is common to use material that is stored or extracted far away from the construction site. The material is then transported long distances and the transportations lead to large costs, both economically and environmentally. Excavated soil and rock masses from construction and demolition is seldom used optimally and is rarely recycled in an optimal way. An improved handling and recycling of the masses could potentially reduce costs for involved actors, while society could benefit from less environmental impact. The research questions addressed in this report are:

    1. Does the introduction of more local storage for excavated soil and rock masses for construction in cities lead to socioeconomic savings?
    2. What impact has environmental costs on the total cost, and are there social aspects that should be considered?
    3. What are the opportunities and difficulties of combining LCA and CBA to evaluate the socioeconomic benefits of a local storage?

A calculation tool was developed to investigate whether a temporary storage reduces the costs and environmental impacts. Theories about Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Cost-benefit analysis (CBA) has been studied and been the basis for the calculation tool. The calculation tool was then tested on a realistic scenario in the city of Gothenburg and was limited to only handle excavated rock.

The result was that the study could not show that an introduction of a more local storage always leads to economic improvements. A mobile crusher was used in the local storage in the tested scenario. If a stationary crusher would be used instead, the outcome would be much more beneficial with a local storage. The developed calculation tool can be adapted for testing different scenario studies and can in an early stage, give an indication for if implementing a local storage is socioeconomic beneficial. The input data can easily be changed to suit different circumstances and to make accurate calculations for different scenarios. The calculation tool takes into account differences in the cost of construction of the storage, cost of crushing rock, transport costs and environmental impact. The environmental and social costs examined seem to have little impact on the total cost. It is advantageous to study both LCA and CBA to get more perspectives in the assessment and evaluation of the current situation compared to future changes.

De yngsta barnens användning av naturmaterial för naturvetenskapligt utforskande: Naturmaterialens potentialitet i förskolans inomhusmiljö2019Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
