    Abstract [en]

Research on journalists and journalistic work has focused on journalists with permanent, full-time employment. Given the rapid decrease of such employment opportunities, we argue that journalism research needs to pay more attention to those who those who have had to leave their jobs and either stopped doing journalism entirely, or who have switched to a freelance career (sometimes combining journalism with other work). This category of people is at once becoming more marginalized and “the new normal” within the occupation: In this paper, we furthermore focus on local (Swedish) journalists and ex-journalists. Based on a set of semi-structured interviews (n = 12) with ex-journalists who share the experience of having lost their permanent, full-time jobs, we use the concept of livelihood as an analytical tool. The concept of livelihood highlights the shift from journalism as a job practiced exclusive of other jobs to an activity conducted alongside other income-generating activities and makes it possible to analyse leaving the occupation from a context that incorporates the whole life situation of the respondents. This also contributes to the current wave of studies of journalism and job loss by adding qualitative data about individual experiences of job loss to the existing quantitative survey evidence.

Olika arbetssätt och arbetsformer i matematikundervisningen: En kvalitativ studie om lärares val av arbetssätt och arbetsformer i matematikundervisningen i årskurserna 1-3.2015Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this report is to examine which working methods and forms of work some teachers for grades 1-3, describes that they use in mathematics teaching, what makes them choose the working methods and forms of work, and if their attitude to mathematics teaching changed in recent years. In order to examine this, qualitative interviews with six teachers have been implemented. It emerged that these teachers partly use a variety of working methods and multiple forms of work in their mathematics teaching even if this differs between different teachers. Their arguments to the choice of working methods and forms of work are that they believe that the chosen working method, or form of work, works based on their own experience and partly because it is timesaving but also that changes in working methods in other topics inspired. All teachers think they have changed their attitude to mathematics teaching in different ways.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to examine the understanding of mathematics from a societal perspective among pupils at a Central Swedish municipal upper secondary school, based on the subject's description found in the Swedish regulatory policies. The study also aims at investigating the pupils' attitude towards the subject, how this attitude is affected by family and friends and what influence the media has in the construction of these views.

The study is based on a survey containing the answers of 130 pupils. Throughout the analysis the group containing students on vocationally-oriented programs have been compared to the student on the academic programmes.

The result of the study shows that the understanding of mathematics and its role in society is quite acceptable, but also that few pupils show a deeper comprehension. A substantial majority think that they understand the purpose of mathematics at upper secondary school.

Even though more than a third of the pupils regard mathematics as the most important subject half of the pupils find no interest at all in the subject. One out of seven pupils even considerers mathematics to provoke feelings of anxiety.

The study further shows that both the close environment (family and friends) and media to some extent affect the attitude towards mathematics.

    Abstract [en]

In 2006 EU presented a new directive on auditing and they have since then come up with several proposals for changes in order to harmonize legislation across the EU while also increasing confidence in the audit. An important step in this was presented by the European Commission in 2010 through "Green Paper: Lessons from the crisis". This paper presented the issue of when auditors would be allowed to perform non audit services. The European Commission received almost 700 responses to this issue from various stakeholders. This has since developed into a proposal for a regulation that came out in November 2011.The purpose of this paper is to investigate what the various stakeholders in Sweden thinks of the prohibition. We also examine what their opinions are about how independence will be affected by it.To fulfill the purpose we have conducted a document study where we collected responses from various stakeholders. Those who commented on the independence or the prohibition, was taken into account in our empirical work.An auditor's independence is important for creating reliance that the financial statements are correct. Independence can be divided into independence of fact and independence of mind, where the first aims so that the auditor should act without letting his objectivity be affected. This independence is not measurable. Independence of mind means what a third party would think of the auditor’s independence. One factor that may affect this is if the auditor performs non-audit services to their customers. This is because such services can strengthen a bond between auditor and client, creating dependence. The empirical data consists of responses from various stakeholders on both the Green Paper which came out in 2010, and on the proposal to the regulation that came out in late 2011. Many arguments raised are used by multiple stakeholders, but there are also some that stand out.The conclusion is that the EU's work is not perfect and that the ban would face some resistance if implemented in its current state.

    Abstract [en]

This essay discusses the study motivation and study discipline among how the students in a vocational high school Vehicle and transport program. The issue is that the study motivation among the students is low. The purpose of my project is to find an approach for teachers to increase the study motivation among students in order to raise the number of students that complete vocational high school. It is stated in the regulation of Educational system Statute-book (SKOLFS 2011:144)”a lifelong passion to learn”. The approach implicate that the students should be able to see all courses in the core subjects as pieces of a puzzle that at the end of the education is joined together as a unity.

In the beginning of one of my courses I showed the aim of the course for the students. After that I divided the course, from start to finish, into small lectures. The students were able to see the length, the contents and the knowledge gained from each lecture. The students and I have together laid out a number of lectures and they also participated in planning the contents for some of these occasions.

I have changed my method of working in the classroom and the lectures have been focused on arranging the course which makes it easier for the student to understand what is expected of them. This higher motivation can of course be due to simple coincidence, but by giving the students more structure it is possible that they work harder during the assigned time. The participation has been higher and the students have undertaken a higher responsibility. To provide the students with lists of assignments have made it easier for them to independently focus their work and made the timeline of the course visible to them.

En pedagogisk syn på värdegrunden: Hur omsätter förskolepedagoger värdegrunden i praktiken2012Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Water jet steering concept: - evaluation of an environmental design, Part 12014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The current hydraulic system that function as the power source for operating the water jet steering device, need to be located inside of the hull to avoid possible environmental damage. This will cause a height difference from where the power supply will be located and where the output is needed. The research of literature and the limitations given by Rolls-Royce laid the basis for the simulation work. The lever concept is a development of the original layout from Rolls-Royce. The current lever concept was formed by simulation of the individual parts it consists of. The modeling work is a starting point for further design changes and improved solutions depending on what results are achieved when simulation is performed on the parts. The modeling work is not part of this report but can be seen in the other master thesis “Water jet steering concept - evaluation of an environmental design, Part 2” which is not yet done but it will be soon. All simulations made are simplified and they are a solid starting point for further work with dimensioning, material selection and calculations. The results of the simulation show that further development is required before a theoretically functioning concept is achieved.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Applications have become a resource for developing students' knowledge in number sense. But do applications have didactical or educational strengths that other teaching materials don´t? What mathematical skills are possible to develop by playing an application in the field? With these questions, this study took off with the aim to study applications' layout and content within number sense. The study was conducted thru a qualitative content analysis, where 39 applications were analyzed by a framework. All applications are used by students in pre-school or primary school's somewhere among the country's elementary schools within the framework of mathematics education. The study shows that the applications are designed with a layout, that has a stimulating and interesting effect on the students. What mathematical skills these applications contains varies. Patterns and reasonability are the two most uncommon components of number sense apparent in the applications. However a large part of the applications develop the students' arithmetic skills.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The purpose of this study is that through a qualitative interview study investigating what kind of motivation and, to the extent they exist, turning points that led individuals to emerged from an alcohol addiction. The study was conducted through six interviews with individuals who have been living with alcohol abuse and through the treatment received help to get out of said abuse. The interviews was booked with the help of the social services in a Swedish municipality where all respondents have completed their treatment. We have interpreted our empiricism by labeling theory and defining moments. The result presents themes that highlight the similarities in the respondents' experiences. The result demonstrates that individuals need to get an insight into his addiction to treatment will have a positive impact. This insight is acquired through various processes or physical damage that affected respondents lives. The motivation of the individual and the private network allso affects the ability to get out of an alcohol abuse. Respondents felt that the need for treatment is the key to freedom from alcohol abuse when they felt that they did not have the knowledge or the ability to do it themselves. This is something that is supported by previous research in the area.

Traditional Music in the Gambia: the role of traditional musicians in a society of change2008Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this research is to find out more about traditional music in Gambian society, to get a wider view of the tradition and what is happening to traditional music in a modern society. Furthermore, I want to find out if the informers consider that the traditional music is fading away from the society and if, in that case, any actions are being taken to preserve the tradition. The research question is: How do the traditional masters in the Gambia consider the role of traditional musicians in a modern society?

The research method consists of making observations at Maali’s Music School and in the E.C.C.O cultural camps in Njawara and Berefet, and interviews with traditional masters of different tribes.

The results of the interviews show that the informers consider that the traditional music is ‘fading away’ from the society, that the role of traditional music in the society is changing and that there is no great support or protection for traditional music in the Gambia. Documentation of the music and interviews made by researchers from abroad often ends up in Europe and is seldom returned back to the informers. With regard to things that could be done to keep traditional music alive, the informers give the examples of building schools for teaching the tradition, teaching traditional songs in the ordinary schools and finding places for traditional masters to gather, where they can discuss, teach and play together.

    Abstract [en]

The hedonic pricing model is a common tool to use when estimating house prices. The model is based on a residence’s different attributes, which are factors that are impacted by values associated with a specific object. Values are all combined to create an estimated price on a residence. By studying previous work of literature and reports we analyzed the hedonic pricing model’s structure, studied which factors are included and why, but also how psychological aspects and patterns affect people and their perception of environments. The purpose of the study was to examine how consumers experienced different aesthetic environments and to find out which impact a change or addition of less costly attributes had on a buyer’s perceived willingness to pay. To study our purpose we used theories about the hedonic price model, architectural and aesthetic impact on house prices and psychological models about what control and affect people. A quantitative method was used in our study and our data was collected through a web survey, which had structured questions and set responses. The survey was answered by ninety-seven people who were asked to participate during several different showings of condominiums. Our results showed that an increased well-being and an increased excitement often led to a higher willingness to pay. It was mainly an increased excitement that induced perceived willingness to pay. Thanks to our result, we can acquire a greater understanding about the aesthetic environments’ influence on people. A greater knowledge about what is pleasingly, and especially what is exciting, can make us understand how a value is created and how you can increase the willingness to pay. Our conclusion is that the aesthetic design of an environment has an influence on people’s estimated value and, that it is above all, an increased perceived excitement that has a link to high estimated price. Well-being has a clear impact on higher house prices. But according to our results, an aesthetic environment can beneficially be designed so that the environment primarily focuses on being perceived interesting and exciting, and by doing that it will generate increased willingness to pay with potential buyers.

Internkommunikation, dess funktion och betydelse för projektmedlemmars motivation.2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Previous research has shown that internal communication can be linked with how motivated a project team is, but research that shows examples of how this works is missing. This paper therefore aims to study how two different IT projects are working with internal communication. By analyzing its strengths and weaknesses, we wanted to study how these could be linked to the project team's motivation. In doing so, we wanted to be able to give examples of how projects could work with internal communication to motivate their project teams.

Essay questions of the study are:

    •  How does the internal communication occur in the projects?
    •  Which strengths and weaknesses are to be found in the internal communication?
    •  How does the internal communication influence the project members' motivation?

To fulfill the purpose of the study it was needed informants interviews with the project manager for each project to access the facts, and respondent interviews with the project members from each project for accessing opinions.

The results from the interviews show that both projects have effective communication, even if it looked different, and doesn't quite agree with what previous research recommends. Among other things, a clear communication structure is missing in one of the projects. Evaluation of the communication is missing in both projects. And in several cases also guidelines for the formal communication are missing, such as for the document management, through the system SharePoint. In both projects, the informal communication plays an important role and that both project teams are located close to each other seems tobe a recipe for successful communication. The project members are in favor of the communication and that fact made it natural to find links to the components that create motivation. Among other things, belonging and self-determination have been shown to be created by internal communication. However, there are other components, such as development and competence that have been more difficult to find examples of. This suggests that a certain amount of motivation can be achieved through functioning communication but also other motivators are needed in a project.

Påfrostningens inverkan på en indirekt uteluftsvärmepump2004Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Kartläggning av forsknings- och utvecklingsarbete inom folktandvården: Research and development (R&D) in the Public Dental Services in Sweden - an unequal opportunity2004In: TandläkartidningenArticle in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Continuous research and development (R&D) is essential to ensure quality in dental care. A recent official report in Sweden suggests that the county councils should be obliged to arrange and support R&D activities in dental care. In this paper, a review of the R&D activities within the Public Dental Services (PDS) in the 21 Swedish counties is presented. Official PDS representatives in each county were contacted by telephone in February and March 2003 and asked questions on the following topics: the organisation of R&D activities, the fields prioritised in R&D, courses arranged in research methodology, research competence, economic matters, and personal comments.

In half of the counties, R&D in the PDS was organised in collaboration with other health services. Few positions in the PDS were in R&D, and those that existed were only part-time posts. Public health matters, prevention, and clinical studies were fields that were commonly prioritised for R&D. Most of the studies published by PDS employees have been performed within specialised dental care.

Competence and knowledge in how to conduct studies are essential for the quality of R&D. Courses in R&D methodology had been arranged in most counties. The number of employees who held a doctoral degree varied from zero (five counties) to over ten (four counties).

Pecuniary resources available for R&D differed considerably (from around 55 EUR to a few hundreds EUR per employee in the different counties). Lower revenues from patient fees were regarded to be the major obstacle to establishing and carrying out R&D activities. How this matter was viewed and handled differed greatly between the counties. At the time of this investigation, a topic of interest in several of them was the future R&D organisation, according to the informants.

It was concluded that the organisation and the preconditions for R&D in the PDS varied greatly between the Swedish counties.

    ORAL HEALTH EDUCATION AMONG ADOLESCENTS

    Objectives:

To investigate adolescents perceptions and desires with respect to oral health education.

    Methods:

A qualitative approach was applied. A series of focus group sessions was conducted with adolescents at senior and upper secondary level schools. The groups comprised an average of 6 individuals (six groups). The main themes of the discussions were the informants perceptions of the oral health education in different settings and under varying circumstances. The discussions were transcribed verbatim and analyzed according to the constant comparative method.

    Results:

One of the most important issues appeared to be the dental personnel considering the individual as a subject and not as an object. The adolescents in the study were uncertain about their knowledge of their oral health. Often, the participants expressed a wish to be taught more at the dental visit. Information in schools was sparse. The support of parents was acknowledged but little discussed. The methods used in advertisements to describe dental products were met with skepticism and these should not be imitated in oral health education as this might undermine the credibility of the dental services. Girls were perceived to be more interested in health than boys were. Two core categories labeled credibility and confidence, which interacted continually, emerged from the data in the analysis.

    Conclusion:

The results indicate that the credibility of the intermediary of the health messages is essential, as is their ability to create confidence. Thus, oral health education among adolescents is more likely to be successful when credibility and confidence are perceived.

Socio-economic and lifestyle factors in relation to priority of dental care in a Swedish adolescent population.2010In: Swedish Dental Journal, ISSN 0347-9994, Vol. 34, no 2Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this epidemiological survey was to describe and analyze oral health habits and life-style factors in relation to the priority of regular dental care in 19-year-old individuals with specific reference to gender, residential area and socio-economic grouping. The data were generated from a randomized sample of 758 (63%) individuals in three residential areas in Western Sweden (two rural, one urban) who answered a set of questionnaires prior to a dental examination. The analysis revealed that males had significantly less favourable oral health habits than females. Forty-one % of the males and 30% of the females did not plan regular dental visits after the age of 20 when they will be charged for the care (p = 0.002). There were no statistically significant differences in oral health habits and dental care priorities with regard to residential areas and socio-economic groups. In a multivariate model, three significant factors for the probability of "not planning for future regular dental visits" were identified: toothbrushing less than twice daily (OR 1.94; 95% CI 1.28-2.94), smoking (OR 1.68; 95% CI 1.10-2.56) and male gender (OR 1.54; 95% CI 1.05-2.24). The findings emphasize the need for promotion of favourable oral health habits and smoking prevention among adolescents. There is also a need for dental personnel to recognize differences with regard to oral health-related attitudes and behaviours between males and females.

Epidemiological dental indices and self-perceived oral health in adolescents: ecological aspects2003In: Acta Odontologica Scandinavica, ISSN 0001-6357, E-ISSN 1502-3850, Vol. 61, no 1, p. 19-24Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate the correlations between epidemiological indices (objective) and self-perceived oral health (subjective) in adolescents at the school level, and to study gender differences in epidemiological indices and in self-perceived oral health. The study comprised two sets of data from Skaraborg County, Sweden; 1. Self-reported questionnaires were answered by adolescents at all senior level schools (n=9 559, 1315 years). 2. Epidemiological indices based on clinical registrations of oral health in 13-15-year-old adolescents were collected in all 17 municipalities (n= 7 899). Simple and partial Pearson correlation coefficients were used to study correlations between subjective and objective oral health in the adolescents at the school level. Gender differences in adolescents subjective and objective oral health were estimated using a logistic regression model. The correlations between epidemiological index registrations and self-perceived oral health were weak. The strongest correlations were found between epidemiological indices and self-perceived gingival bleeding: 0.416 between the DS (decayed surfaces) index and self-perceived bleeding. Girls more seldom than boys were satisfied with the appearance of their teeth; in municipalities with clinical good oral health OR 0.76 (95% CI 0.59-0.98) and with poor clinical oral health OR 0.74 (CI 0.57-0.94). No gender differences were found in the epidemiological index registrations. The currently used epidemiological indices did not reflect adolescents own perceptions of their oral health at the school level and they could not recognize or identify gender differences. Surveillance of oral health in young people should include information on self-perceived oral health.

A gender perspective of self-perceived oral health in adolescents. Associations with attitudes and behaviours2001In: Community Dental HealthArticle in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective To investigate the associations between dental attitudes and behaviours, and self-perceived oral health from a gender perspective in an adolescent population.

Design A census survey. Self-reported questionnaires were answered anonymously in a standardised manner in classrooms. Studied attitudes included the importance of sound teeth and feelings towards visits to the dentist. Behaviours were represented by floss usage and sweets consumption.

Setting All senior and upper secondary level schools in Skaraborg County, Sweden.

    Subjects 17,280 students, aged 13 18 years.

Outcome measures Self-perceived oral health, represented by a single-item rating; satisfaction with the appearance of the teeth; self-assessed gum bleeding; and a perceived oral health (POH) index.

Results Recognising sound teeth as important was a predominating attitude among the respondents (boys 94%, girls 97%) and was significantly associated with a good perceived oral health in all aspects. Individuals who experienced visits to dentist as unpleasant (boys 36%, girls 43%) were less likely to perceive good oral health as single-item rated (OR for boys 0.55[0.49,0.63] and for girls 0.40[0.34,0.47]). Regular use of floss did not prevent bleeding gums. Daily sweets consumption showed a significant and inverse association with self-perceived oral health as single-item rated (OR for boys 0.53[0.44,0.66], girls 0.49[0.40,0.60). Girls, more often than boys, perceived their oral health to be good, except in the perception of the appearance of their teeth.

Conclusions It is concluded that the strong associations between attitudes and self-perceived oral health should be recognised in strategies for oral health promotion and that gender differences must be considered.
