    Abstract [en]

    This document reports the initial work on generic mock-ups of user interfaces for privacy-enhancing identity management systems. It describes different user interface paradigms that have been outlined as mock-ups.



    The documentation consists of a brief background and then a description of the essential features of the major mock-ups produced. Some major user interface issues, which are not dependent on the different user interface paradigms of the mock-ups, are discussed in a separate chapter. The screenshots in the Appendix document the mock-ups graphically. Comments on details are found in the figure legends of the Appendix

    This document gives guidance and makes proposals on user interfaces (UI) of the PRIME integrated identity management prototype, especially the demonstrator version 1. It gives answers to unresolved problems as pointed out in the evaluations of the early user-side UI proposals, and it discusses HCI privacy design in general but also presents some specific directions for the V1 demonstrator to give the PRIME components a coherent look. Ontologies and directions for Application Programming Interface for human-computer interaction are given to guide work on the PRIME console

    Abstract [en]

    Nine numerical inscriptions on metal tools from Chanhu-daro, Kalibangan and Mohenjo-daro are shown to constitute a text genre of their own. It is tested whether the expressions relate to the weights of the tools and/or to the contemporary system of weight units. Both tests are negative. The number system appears as octal on internal grounds. Structures of numerical systems are discussed extensively.

    There is a discussion in Information Systems as well as in Linguistics about "the relations between symbols and the subject matter they represent". This chapter highlights that relation, on the basis of Langefors three information roles (the pragmatic, semantic and syntactic role), and on criticism of the division of linguistics into pragmatics, semantics and syntax. It appears that by understanding the more mechanical Information Systems, we can illustrate weaknesses in humanistic linguistics, which in turn can illustrate the development of concepts within Information Systems

    Abstract [en]

    The paper reports the development of an experimental station Ozlab where interactivity (graphical appearance and functions) can be mock-prototyped in a special manner. The idea is to allow for easy prototyping without the need for programming. So far, pilot runs with three non-programmers have been conducted to pin-point pitfalls in the approach of letting naive designers build the graphics of user interfaces and then 'manually' test-run the functionality with their own clients (children with Down's syndrome). After a few trials, they had understood the idea, and their satisfaction was high. The project gained valuable feedback for the redesign of Ozlab.

    Ozlab has been developed to cater for testing which is in part manual and where test users are not aware that the system they seem to interact with is faked. In this way developers can use their human capacity for interactive communication to find suitable human-computer dialogue structures. The chapter argues that the tool itself allows other groups to become interaction designers, since little expertise in programming is needed, while an understanding of every application area as well as an understanding of the need of every user group is always needed

    Tolv essäer skrivna under en dryg veckas tid inom kursen "Modeller och experimentella metoder i multimediautveckling" vårterminen 2004 - författarna reflekterar över metaforer och analogier, scenariobaserad design liksom användbarhetstester, projektmodeller för användarcentrering, systerdiscipliner till MDI, samt över några datorprogram för interaktiv multimedia.



    Kursens mål är att ge de studerande fördjupad färdighet i att identifiera faktorer som är av betydelse vid interaktionen människa-maskin, framför allt med hänsyn till uformning av kravspecifikationer för multimediala system. Målsättningen är också att göra de studerande förtrogna med olika experimentella metoder för utveckling och utvärdering av användargränssnitt. Men kursen innefattar alltså också ett litet essämoment där kursdeltagarna som "mini-forskare" kan fördjupa sitt tyckande om kurslitteraturen eller annan relevant litteratur. Resultatet av detta kursmoment presenteras i denna rapport

    Abstract [en]

    The Ozlab set-up used in this study is intended to facilitate performance tests at a conceptual stage in the development of interactive multimedia products. Ozlab facilitates manual simulations of the interactivity of proposed user interfaces, thereby simplifying testing and making the development of ideas during test runs possible. Even non-programmers can perform these activities. The paper reports from a pilot study within the efforts currently taking place concerning educationalists focusing on language disabilities, where the clients could benefit from graphical support in interactive teaching aids. Ozlab extends the traditional, linguistically based Wizard-of-Oz technique for manual prototyping to graphical interaction. The pilot study indicates that a refined Ozlab could be used by inexperienced designers for testing their own ideas. The fact that requirements of interactivity thus can be visualised by laymen will have implications for the design of requirements specification for multimedia products.Keywords: interactivity, non-programmers, software design, usability testing, Wizard of Oz

    Abstract [en]

    Privacy-enhanced Identity Management can enable users to retain and maintain informational self-determination in our networked society. This paper describes the usability research work that has been done within the first year of the European Union project on “Privacy and Identity Management for Europe” (PRIME). It primarily discusses and compares three alternative UI paradigms for privacy-enhanced Identity Management, and presents how important legal privacy principles derived from the European Union Directives have been mapped into suggestions of user interface solutions for PRIME. Besides, it discusses results and encountered problems from conducted usability tests on mock-ups implementing the different UI paradigms and proposes means for addressing those problems. The paper concludes with remarks on the characteristics of usability work for privacy-enhancing technologies.

    The Centre for HumanIT at Karlstad University aims at strengthening research on "the Human aspects of IT". The present volume consists of contributions from seventeen of the researchers and research students involved in HumanIT activities during the last three years. Some chapters report past activities, some are directed more towards future research activities. The contributions span from the linguistic details of Internet chats, over IT-related stress and privacy risk management, to using ICT to alleviate poverty in the large portions of the world where no-one has ever used any kind of IT appliance.     Abstract [en]

    Usability is an important factor influencing the acceptance of technology-related products and subsequently the decision process to use or buy them. For this reason usability has been of interest in market research for many years. However, in the context of user-controlled Identity Management Systems (IMS) hardly any comparative usability studies have been published. This document gives an overview of established evaluation methods and criteria for usability and analyses which methods and criteria are suited for user controlled IMS. The selected methods and criteria are applied to twelve IMS in six functional classes. These classes include user controlled identifier management, policy management, form filling, context monitoring and history management. Nine of these IMS are further analysed in depth and the results of the tests are published in this report.

    This position statement does not focus on usability although it presents data from a software up-date cycle where several usability- and user-centred methods were used. The important lesson learnt is that a better (more complete) specification before programming results in fewer errors in the code and that such a specification can be reached by user tests of interactive mockups.

    It is a well-established fact that the usability of a software package increases if it has been tested with users and usability flaws have been corrected. However, this presentation does not focus on usability issues but on the effects of early user-testing on software code quality determined as the number of errors discovered in function tests. In analysing the results of an extensive software update cycle, the authors found that functional requirements based on the results of early user-testing resulted in program code that had half the number of the errors (and less than one-fifth of the critical errors) found in code based solely on requirements emanating from users’ verbal opinions.

    Uppsatsen utgår ifrån Agency- och Stewardship Theory samt Project Governance som bakgrund till att beskriva hur projektorganisationer arbetar med styrning av projekt. Studien ämnar skildra hur styrning av projekt påverkar projektbeställares och projektledares arbete i projekt vad gäller tillsyn, tillit samt kommunikation. För att göra detta är studien baserad på sju kvalitativa semi-strukturerade intervjuer med respondenter som verkar inom olika branscher på arbetsmarknaden. Datan från intervjuerna bearbetades sedan med s.k. deduktiv tematisk analys för att göra den mer presenter- och hanterbar.

    Agency- och Stewardship Theory är nära sammankopplade med Project Governance, även om de i sig själva är helt skilda. Agency- och Stewardship theory berör den eventuella problematik som kan uppstå när en uppgift delegeras från en part till en annan, något som är högst aktuellt i en projektorganisation. Project Governance är däremot ett ramverk vari det framkommer hur moderorganisationen vill att projekt förhåller sig till rörande ett antal parametrar. Vi har valt att presentera fyra olika perspektiv på Project Governance och en sammanställning av gemensamma drag i perspektiven är att Project Governance involverar ett antal styråtgärder så som att anpassa projektets syfte och mål med moderorganisationens, olika former av kontrollmekanismer och styrgruppens sammansättning.

    Det framkom i intervjuerna och sedermera i resultatet att inslag av Project Governance är ständigt påverkande och återkommande i samtliga av respondenternas arbetssituation. Det rör sig om generella styrmedel så som ekonomimöten med kunder eller entreprenörer och rapporteringsskyldigheter till fasta beslutspunkter och kontinuerliga möten med styrgruppen. Det främsta och kanske mest utpräglade resultatet är hur pass mycket tilltro det finns i s.k. partneringssamarbeten och hur styrningen blir allt mer komplex när allt fler företag blandas in.

    Kunskapsöverföring mellan projekt är ett ansvarsområde inom projektledning. Arbetsformen projekt är mycket kunskapsintensiv och det är av största vikt för organisationer att omhänderta kunskap som genereras inom projektverksamheten. Det finns dokumenterade svårigheter kring kunskapsöverföring från både framgångrika samt problemfyllda projekt och oftast förblir kunskapen individbunden och odokumenterad.

    För att genomföra kunskapsöverföring mellan projekt på ett effektivt sätt krävs att projektledare har kunskap om specifika metoder samt pedagogiska färdigheter ihop med bred projektledarkunskap. Syftet med denna studie är att belysa projektledares uppfattning om kunskapsöverföring mellan produktutvecklingsprojekt och vilka metoder som används. Den kvalitativa ansatsen fenomenografi har används för att analysera resultatet. Studien omfattar totalt sex intervjuer av seniora projektledare verksamma inom produktutvecklingsprojekt på ett högteknologiskt företag i mellansverige.

    Projektledarna i denna studie använder metoder vid kunskapsöverföring som är dokumenterat framgångsrika vid kunskapsöverföring och organisatoriskt lärande. Projektledarna anser att kunskapsöverföring är en viktig aktivitet men deras utövandet bygger endast på erfarenhetsbaserad kunskap utan en teoretisk, pedagogisk förankring. Varken projektorganisationen eller linjeorganisationen prioriterar aktivteter kopplat till kunskapsöverföring i verksamheten. Projektverksamheten är i huvudsak fokuserad kring produktframtagning och kunskapsöverföring sker övervägande i samband med att problem uppstår i verksamheten. Projektteamens möjligheter att ta till sig kunskap under problemlösning är begränsade på grund av hög stressnivå. Dokumenteringen av kunskapsöverföring har ingen given mottagare i linjeorganisationen. De framgångsrika mjuka ledaregenskaperna vid kunskapsöverföring värderas inte explicit av verksamheten. Många aktiviteter kring kunskapsöverföring sker omedvetet i projektverksamheten. Fallstudien visar att det finns en förbättringspotential i det högteknologiska företagets projekt- och linjeverksamhet genom att öka fokuseringen på kunskapsöverföring och projektledares förutsättningar.

    Det blir allt mer vanligt att människor kopplar upp sig mot internet via sin smartphone, både privat och i arbetet. Detta innebär att webbsidor måste anpassas för att visas i dessa enheter. Men att mobilanpassa en webbsida kan vara svårt när det kommer till överskådlighet och navigation av webbsidan. Detta på grund av den begränsade skärmytan. När det kommer till att mobilanpassa en webbsida talas det ofta om två tekniker, responsiv webbdesign och mobila webbapplikationer. Det är dessa två tekniker som diskuteras och jämförs i denna kandidatuppsats. Netgain är ett företag som just nu står inför valet av teknik och detta fall används som exempel för att visa på hur resultatet från denna kandidatuppsats kan relateras till ett specifikt fall i praktiken.

    Syftet med denna kandidatuppsats i informatik är att göra en jämförelse mellan teknikerna responsiv webbdesign och mobil webbapplikation. Uppsatsen syftar till att beskriva vilka faktorer som kan påverka valet av teknik när det gäller navigation och överskådlighet i smartphones med fokus på användning. Uppsatsen syftar även till att visa hur dessa faktorer kan relateras till ett företag som Netgain. Frågan är hur dessa faktorer kan användas för att ta fram rekommendationer avseende vilken av teknikerna responsiv webbdesign och mobil webbapplikation som passar bäst för en mobil representation av deras affärsmodell för IT.

    I denna undersökning har ett kvalitativt angreppssätt tillämpats bestående av en fallstudie som har baserats på personliga intervjuer med konsulter på ett webbföretag. Utifrån dessa intervjuer, tillsammans med insamlad teori, har faktorer som kan påverka valet av teknik när det gäller navigation och överskådlighet i smartphones identifierats.

    Det tydligaste resultatet som framkom i denna undersökning är att mängden information, som ska finnas på den mobilanpassade webbsidan, kan påverka valet av teknik. Vid stora informationsmängder och djupa informationsstrukturer har en mobil webbapplikation en fördel framför responsiv webbdesign. Däremot tillgodoser responsiv webbdesign användarens förväntning om att det som går att finna på en webbsida som visas på en desktop även ska gå att finna i en smartphone. I en mobil webbapplikation finns möjligheten att styra innehållet på ett annat sätt än vid responsiv webbdesign. Detta gör att en mobil webbapplikation har en fördel även när det kommer till överskådlighet och detta kan även bidra till att användaren kan nå sitt mål snabbare än på en webbsida utvecklad med responsiv webbdesign.

    Undersökningen visade vidare att när det kommer till att göra en mobilanpassad webbsida överskådlig samt enkel att navigera för alla användare, oavsett behov, har en mobil webbapplikation även här en fördel framför responsiv webbdesign. Detta på grund av att det vid responsiv webbdesign kan vara svårt att få innehållet på webbsidan att läsas upp korrekt av en skärmläsare. Dock har responsiv webbdesign en fördel i att denna teknik tillhandahåller ett minimalt behov av att zooma innehållet.

    Lugnt och skönt på jobbet? Knappast. För de flesta organisationer idag kan vi se hur antalet uppgifter vi förväntas klara av ökar. Det har blivit lätt att ställa krav på underlag från organisationen så vi lägger mer tid på att administrera den egna organisationen, vilket ger mindre tid att leverera det vi från början förväntades göra.

    Hur kan det bli så här? Bakom allt detta ligger ambitiösa människor. De är problemet. Vi har länge levt i villfarelsen att organisationers problem bottnar i att anställda är slöa, slappa och likgiltiga. En flora av teambuildingaktviteter har fått oss att försöka få människor att bli kreativa och entusiastiska. Väldigt lite resurser har lagts på att hantera de ambitiösa människorna, de som redan är allt detta. De som tar initiativ och ser till att saker händer. Ofta tyvärr inom fel områden.

    Det är dags att vi tar tillbaka vår egen organisation. Chefer måste börja säga nej till underlagslämnande och nya kontrollsystem. Utveckling måste bli liktydigt med förenkling, inte tillägg och detaljer. Vi måste börja åtgärda det som är viktigt för organisationen, inte det som är dåligt.

    Syftet med uppsatsen är att undersöka planeringsfasen och vad som händer däri för att se vad som kan förbättras. Detta görs genom att intervjua fyra projektledare vid olika företag som ägnar sig åt IT-projekt och intervjuerna ställs sedan emot existerande teori i området genom en kvalitativ analys. Intervjufrågorna baseras på projekttriangeln, som är ett ständigt återkommande fenomen i projektledningsteori, vars gyllene beståndsdelar är tid, kostnad och resultat. För undersökningens skull anpassas denna till att fokusera på planeringsfasen och då belyses aktiviteterna som sker när projektspecifikationen skapas; skapande av budget, tidplan och kravspecifikation, samt resurstilldelning för projektet.

              Det framkommer i undersökningen att samtliga fallföretag fokuserar på att generera ett bra resultat, eftersom de anser att en nöjd kund är det yttersta måttet på ett lyckat projekt, men att de ej är samstämmiga gällande vad som är sekundärfokus: tid eller kostnad. Detta konstaterande leder vidare till ifrågasättandet av projekttriangelns form. Är det kanske en romb egentligen?

              Vi rekommenderar projektorganisationer, baserat på det som framkommit under analysen, att utveckla sig själva till lärande organisationer och att utforska sin ståndpunkt i projektromben. Vidare rekommenderar vi organisationer att inte stirra sig blinda på möjliga kostnadsbesparingar, att alltid arbeta med buffert – för både tid, kostnad och resurser samt att beslutsfattarna gällande budgetar skall sätta sig in i projekten bättre alternativt förlita sig än mer på tillgänglig expertis. Slutligen rekommenderar vi även projektorganisationer att inrikta framgångsmätningar på projekt mot resultatet, eftersom vår undersökning visat att resultat alltid är huvudfokus.

              De identifierade problemområdena som leder fram till rekommendationerna förefaller vara anledningen till det höga antal misslyckade IT-projekt som låg till grund för undersökningen och om dessa rekommendationer följs skulle problemen därmed minska.
