The Wicked Problem of Privacy: Design Challenge for Crypto-based Solutions2018Licentiate thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Data privacy has been growing in importance in recent years, especially with the continuous increase of online activity. Researchers study, design, and develop solutions aimed at enhancing users’ data privacy. The wicked problem of data privacy is a continuous challenge that defies straightforward solutions. Since there are many factors involved in data privacy, such as technological, legal, and human aspects, we can only aim at mitigating rather than solving this wicked problem. Our aim was to focus on human aspects for designing usable crypto-based privacy-enhancing solutions.  In this thesis, we followed a user centered design method by using empirical qualitative means for investigating user’s perceptions and opinions of our solutions. Most of our work has focused on redactable signatures in the cloud context within the eHealth use-case. Redactable signatures are  a privacy enhancing scheme allowing to remove parts of a signed document by a specified party for achieving data minimization without invalidating the respective signature.

We mainly used semi-structures interviews and focus groups in our investigations. Our results yielded key HCI considerations as well as guidelines of different means for supporting the design of future solutions.

    Abstract [en]

This paper summarises the results of a workshop at the IFIP Summer School 2015 introducing the EU Horizon 2020 project PRISMACLOUD, that is, Privacy and Security Maintaining Services in the Cloud. The contributions of this summary are three-fold. Firstly, it provides an overview to the PRISMACLOUD cryptographic tools and use-case scenarios that were presented as part of this workshop. Secondly, it distills the discussion results of parallel focus groups. Thirdly, it summarises a ``Deep Dive on Crypto'' session that offered technical information on the new tools. Overall, the workshop aimed at outlining application scenarios and eliciting end-user requirements for PRISMACLOUD.

Stakeholders’ Perspectives on Malleable Signatures in a Cloud-based eHealth Scenario2016In: Proceedings of the International Symposium on Human Aspects of Information Security & Assurance, 2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we discuss end user requirements that we elicited for the use of malleable signatures in a Cloud-based eHealth scenario. The concept of a malleable signature, which is a privacy enhancing cryptographic scheme that enables the redaction of personal information from signed documents while preserving the validity of the signature, might be counter- intuitive to end users as its functionality does not correspond to the one of a traditional signature scheme. A qualitative study via a series of semi-structured interviews and focus groups has been conducted to understand stakeholders’ opinions and concerns in regards to the possible applications of malleable signatures in the eHealth area, where a medical record is first digitally signed by a doctor and later redacted by the patient in the cloud. Results from this study yielded user requirements such as the need for suitable metaphors and guidelines, usable templates, and clear redaction policies.

Prenatal Bisphenol A Exposure is Linked to Epigenetic Changes in Glutamate Receptor Subunit Gene Grin2b in Female Rats and Humans2018In: Scientific Reports, ISSN 2045-2322, E-ISSN 2045-2322, Vol. 8, article id 11315Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Bisphenol A (BPA) exposure has been linked to neurodevelopmental disorders and to effects on epigenetic regulation, such as DNA methylation, at genes involved in brain function. High doses of BPA have been shown to change expression and regulation of one such gene, Grin2b, in mice. Yet, if such changes occur at relevant doses in animals and humans has not been addressed. We investigated if low-dose developmental BPA exposure affects DNA methylation and expression of Grin2b in brains of adult rats. Furthermore, we assessed associations between prenatal BPA exposure and Grin2b methylation in 7-year old children. We found that Grin2b mRNA expression was increased and DNA methylation decreased in female, but not in male rats. In humans, prenatal BPA exposure was associated with increased methylation levels in girls. Additionally, Iow APGAR scores, a predictor for increased risk for neurodevelopmental diseases, were associated with higher Grin2b methylation levels in girls. Thus, we could link developmental BPA exposure and Iow APGAR scores to changes in the epigenetic regulation of Grin2b, a gene important for neuronal function, in a sexual dimorphic fashion. Discrepancies in exact locations and directions of the DNA methylation change might reflect differences between species, analysed tissues, exposure level and/or timing.

Experience: An open platform for experimentation with commercial mobile broadband networks2017In: MobiCom '17 Proceedings of the 23rd Annual International Conference on Mobile Computing and Networking, New York: ACM Digital Library, 2017, p. 70-78Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Open experimentation with operational Mobile Broadband (MBB) networks in the wild is currently a fundamental requirement of the research community in its endeavor to address the need of innovative solutions for mobile communications. Even more, there is a strong need for objective data about stability and performance of MBB (e.g., 3G/4G) networks, and for tools that rigorously and scientifically assess their status. In this paper, we introduce the MONROE measurement platform: an open access and flexible hardware-based platform for measurements and custom experimentation on operational MBB networks. The MONROE platform enables accurate, realistic and meaningful assessment of the performance and reliability of 11 MBB networks in Europe. We report on our experience designing, implementing and testing the solution we propose for the platform. We detail the challenges we overcame while building and testing the MONROE testbed and argue our design and implementation choices accordingly. We describe and exemplify the capabilities of the platform and the wide variety of experiments that external users already perform using the system

Measuring and Assessing Mobile Broadband Networks with MONROE2016In: 2016 IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile, and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM), Red Hook: IEEE conference proceedings, 2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Mobile broadband (MBB) networks underpin numerous vital operations of the society and are arguably becoming the most important piece of the communications infrastructure. In this demo paper, our goal is to showcase the potential of a novel multi-homed MBB platform for measuring, monitoring and assessing the performance of MBB services in an objective manner. Our platform, MONROE, is composed of hundreds of nodes scattered over four European countries and a backend system that collects the measurement results. Through a user-friendly web client, the experimenters can schedule and deploy their experiments. The platform further embeds traffic analysis tools for real-time traffic flow analysis and a powerful visualization tool.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate how reporting of murder cases differs from SVT Nyheter and Aftonbladet's web reporting. To answer our question, we have conducted a qualitative text analysis with elements of critical discourse analysis and framing theory, on two articles from each news service. The texts of the articles have been examined with focus on word choice and linguistic actions. We have analyzed the underlying meanings of the text, how emotive words are used and how victims, perpetrators and potential secondary actors have been framed in the reporting.

We have chosen the Kim Wall case as our empirical material. It contains several spectacular details, and both the perpetrator and the victim are known in the past. This helps the reporting to be formed in a variety of ways, making our research particularly interesting.

Previous research shows that journalism tends to become more entertaining and dramatized, because sensationalism has a prominent role in journalism. At the same time, crime and journalism are considered to be an inseparable couple, which together form a separate area of coverage in journalism.

The result of our analysis shows that there are clear differences in the reporting between public service and commercial evening paper. SVT Nyheter is more factual in their reporting, and relates only to facts, while Aftonbladet builds their articles more like a story with connections to popular culture. The analysis also suggests that both news services assign a significantly greater focus to the perpetrator than the victim.

    Abstract [en]

Aid administrators meet many elderlies in their professional role. The aim was with an from a theoretical perspective on ageism study aid administrator's experiences of discrimination against older people. In this study, the question was asked how they feel about discrimination of older people in society and what they think can strengthen the position for elderly as a group. In this study five aid administrators were interviewed about their experiences of elderly people’s discrimination. The results were analyzed using an ageism perspective with a qualitative content analysis. The result shows that aid administrators see ageism in society by meeting with older people and through social perception. They stated that discrimination, prejudice and stereotypes in society that cause problems for older people like, exclusion, poor treatment and a contributor to a negative self-image. Older becomes less represented than other groups, overrides and availability in society is not adapted to their needs and abilities. Aid administrators argue that the perception of the elderly is an area for improvement. To succeed aid administrators, see the need for knowledge about ageism and that society listens to what older people want and need. It is society's duty to combat discrimination and protect human equivalence.

My purpose with this study was partly to examine how some Swedish science teachers teach and their knowledge of the science curriculum, and how this affects their teaching. I also aimed to compare the Swedish and Irish science curriculum. The method I undertook to achieve this study was to carry out six interviews with science teachers in Sweden. I also completed a text analyse of both the Swedish & Irish science curriculum. The results of the interviews showed that the teachers think the curriculum is important but they do not always keep to it. They know that their pupils do not reach the standards for fifth grade but they are not concerned about this. They aim to teach science as outlined in the curriculum. However, they are satisfied with how they teach in relation to the curriculum today. The science curriculums in Sweden and in Ireland are composed in different ways but their didactic ways of thinking are quite similar. They want the pupils to think scientifically about nature and therefore reach a sustainable development.

    Abstract

Temporary employment is not a new occurrence. The problems with this type of employment became a topic of interest when the government decided to regulate temporary employments. The first set of regulations, which came into effect in 1974, were very strict but have since been revised to better suite the needs of the market. The present regulations are from 1982 but some smaller changes have been made to them since. The difficulty with today’s regulations is still how to get a balance between the interests of both the employers and employees regarding protection and flexibility. Finding a solution to the problem is paramount because of the increasing number of temporary employments.

Typical characteristics of a temporary employment are that the employer and the employee agree upon when the engagement will end. When this time passes the employer and employee are free to part without any further obligations.

The regulations that govern temporary employment are found in 5, 5a and 6§§ LAS. These contain a number of possible solutions to temporary employment. The employee is protected from misuse by 4§ LAS.

Praxis about temporary engagement and statements by the Labour Court have become guiding principles for the application of the law. The law and praxis can also be combined with collective agreements. Hence the regulations of temporary employment can be adjusted to specific circumstances in different areas. Some of the collective agreements have been studied. A comparison between the public and private sector have not shown any striking differences.

A drop in numbers of temporary employments does not automatically bring an increased number of employments with conditional tenure. This development is mainly caused by the increasing number of organizations which temporary rent out labour to businesses.

The largest problem with the regulations of today seems to be the different circumstances and time frames which are declared in the law. These problems seems to be centered to 5§ LAS. As a group of regulations even 5a and 6§§ LAS are part of the problems among the temporary employments, because of the circumstances for each paragraph. The problems have been acknowledged and changes are meant to take place on July 1, 2007. The new government is planning for further changes but have yet to reveal their plans to the public. The present regulations are consequently a problem and therefore we have provided a suggestion for a solution in the last chapter, which is similar to the new rules.

    Abstract

Write the most important things first in text that will be read by a scanning web user. This paper is based upon theories about

    – how we read

    – what style in texts is

    – how texts should be written for web pages

Reading from computer screens is about 25 percent slower than reading from paper. This because screens

    – flicker

    – have lower resolution than paper

All text with the purpose of being read from a screen should be adjusted to the reader’s physical condition. The theories above were studied and interviews were done to find out how text for web should be written. Three persons were interviewed. They answered questions about how they produce text to their web sites. And the conclusion was

    – write short and distinct

    – put the most important first

    – explain to the visitor to guide them correct

    – use comprehensive words

    – short sentences are better than longer

    – skip all unnecessarily

    – use objective language

    – do not think that the reader reads the whole text

    – split longer texts into multiple pages with hypertext links

    The interviewed peoples are

    – Swedish Rescue Services Agency’s web master

    – Big brother’s web editor in chief

    – Information design’s leader of projects

This abstract can be read from a screen. If the whole paper should be read it should be printed first. The paper is not supposed to be read from a screen.

    Abstract [sv]

The purpose of this study is to investigate the preschool teachers knowledge and interest in biology and how they teach the subject. To answer my questions in this study, I used the survey questionnaire. A total of 88 preschool teachers responded to the survey. They answered questions about their own views regarding biology and how they teach the topic. Results showed that approximately half of the participants mentioned that they did not teach, in equal terms, all areas of biology, the focus was primarily on the areas of animals and nature. It was important for the teachers to consider the children’s interest, and they focus on what they themselves were interested in and had knowledge about.

    Abstract [en]

Companies and projects often face the challenge of creating something new to increase their competitiveness. In this process of creating something new creativity is an important factor. By using a creative approach and utilizing creative processes new innovations emerges. An industry that has grown in recent years is the computer games industry. Competition is fierce and for the companies to succeed, the product need that extra something to make it stand out among all the produced games.

The project manager's role in the creative process and the ability to be creative within a distance based company is not something highlighted by previous research. This formed the basis of our research question:

How do project managers act to create conditions for creativity among employees in a remotely organized computer game company?

To answer our question, we chose to make a descriptive case study. The project is based in the Nordic countries with employees worldwide. It is altogether a distance based project with no shared workspace. We interviewed the projects two project managers, and supplemented with a qualitative survey amongst the employees. The collected material was analyzed with a methodology inspired by Grounded Theory and previous research results.

Three approaches of how the project managers act to promote creativity are evident in their stories. These approaches are trust, availability and tolerance. They form the basis of our model on how the project managers in this case act to promote employee creativity. Besides the three approaches, two concepts emerged as important tools for creativity in the project: motivation and communication. Our conclusion can be described as follows:

Motivation provides the conditions for creative thinking. By building an organization where project leaders show trust in the ability of employees, and allows tolerance to be a watchword for collaboration, project managers work to improve employee motivation. This will create opportunities for creativity among the employees in this distance based project. Communication is essential for creative work in the project and virtual means of communication a way to increase availability.

Det dialogiska klassrummet: En studie om lärares olika undervisningsmetoder2008Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

    Theory

Which education model has the ultimate learning potential? According to Olga Dysthe a varied education predominated by a dialogical nature is the best way of teaching.

    Purpose

My main purpose in this essay has been to investigate three different ways of education models and decide, on the basis of Dysthes’ model, whether they can be classified as a monological or a dialogical model.

I have also investigated if the thesis of Dysthes, “The teachers view of knowledge determines the choice of teaching method”, is anchored in the reality.

Furthermore, I have surveyed how the teachers educate concerning democracy. For example, on the basis of certain rules, are all sudents able to make the selves heard in a classroom that is characterized as dialogical? In such a classroom the teacher works whith activities to involve everyone and according to Dysthe, democracy is an attitude rather than a political system. Democracy is necessary in a classroom that is classified as dialogical.

    Result

The essay is exclusively qualitative and builds upon interviews with three teachers on different upper secondary social schools witin the Gothenburg area.

My results indicate that the teathers way of educating totaly differs from each others and that the thesis of Dysthe can be applied on only two out of three cases. Only one of the three teathers includes the dialogue to its full extent. This teacher is the only one to apply democracy in its classroom. The second teacher uses as much monologue as dialogue. The third teacher is categorized as a person who applies the monological education entirely.

    Abstract [en]

An analysis of a specific application of anaerobic wastewater treatment at a pulp and board mill, Stora Enso Skoghall, was carried out. A literature study was done and effluent wastewater from CTMP pulp production was analyzed. The analysis consisted of a broad constituent analysis and an anaerobic treatment trial. Results from these test where used to calculate the treatment effectiveness and resulting energy potential at the mill.

The literature study and constituent analysis showed that toxicity of the water to be treated, due to wood extractives and sulphur content, was of concern. Detoxification chemicals targeting these constituents where used in the anaerobic treatment trial. The trial consisted of a two chamber upflow reactor and aerobic post treatment. The result of the trial is that the water of concern has about 50% anaerobically degradable content. A full scale implementation of anaerobic wastewater treatment would result in a methane production of 3,76 to 7,76 GWh/yr. An application of anaerobic wastewater treatment will also result in electricity savings, in aerated pond, and increase the capacity margin on current sludge handling techniques.

    Abstract [en]

The Cauchy-Schwarz (C-S) inequality is one of the most famous inequalities in mathematics. In this survey article, we first give a brief history of the inequality. Afterward, we present the C-S inequality for inner product spaces. Focusing on operator inequalities, we then review some significant recent developments of the C-S inequality and its reverses for Hilbert space operators and elements of Hilbert C*-modules. In particular, we pay special attention to an operator Wielandt inequality.

    Abstract [en]

In this study I want to survey which plays preschool teachers thinks are accepted in preschool and wish aren’t. I also found it relevant to investigate when and why they choose to interrupt a play and what happens when they do? My interest for the possibility that we might judge by some values was the reason for my question formulations and for the follow-up questions in my interview.

For my survey I used semi-structured interviews to get a deeper knowledge about this domain and for the opportunity to ask further supplementary questions.

The results show how preschool teachers accept most of the plays and that those plays that aren’t accepted and in need of being disrupted or to be changed mostly are plays where someone could be hurt or violated.

It also shows that the preschool teachers think that they should regulate or interrupt children´s plays as little as possible because most of the time interruption turns the plays in a negative direction.

My conclusion is that preschool teachers are willing to see children’s intentions but there are also norms and values that regulate what´s accepted or not.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Several of researchers have reflected that the school ought to be developed to a learning organization. A method as proceed from such a perspective and should be able to match a local child- and educations administration is problembased school development. To investigate in which ways a child- and educations administration prosecute a problem based learning inside the organization a case study was used as research strategy. The question this report gives answer to is:

In what/which way works a child- and educations administration in a rural district with a method to fulfil a problembased learning.

To collect empiric data a canvassing inquiry was accomplished among the child- and educations administrations group of management. According to the research result it can declares that there are good conditions for the organization to prosecute problem based school development, but there is yet a great deal to do before it´s can be said totally fulfilled. In the organizations group of management there is a varying understanding of the school’s mission, because they are seeing the mission from different perspectives. To be able to develop the organization there is important in the future to establish a common dialogue how the coming vision are going to elaborates, because the vision of today is apprehend as indistinct. Within the organization their communication system is well-developed and the culture of the organizations group of management is cooperating. The group of managements meeting ought to engage more time in having challenging conversations how the pedagogical activities in the organization are going to be continuously developed.

Can Sustainability be a Key Driver of Innovation and Competitive Advantage?: Case of IKEA2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a practice of companies on their way towards sustainability. It allows them to measure their impact on environment and society, and to create a balance between economic, social and environmental aspects. Becoming more and more sustainable means that companies need to find new ways of operating throughout the whole value chain that creates competitive advantage by providing an innovation opportunity. Innovation that concerns environmental as well as economic impact of the product/service on the society; that is called eco-innovation. Eco-innovation can be a guarantee of sustainable competitive advantage (SCA) to the companies that practice sustainability.

The purpose of this master thesis is to investigate the reasons companies practice sustainability and whether or not sustainability is a driver of innovation and competitive advantage. Since the global company IKEA is among top sustainability leaders in the Scandinavian region, we decided to study this company for our research.

Qualitative research and case study design were chosen as appropriate research methods to conduct this study. The global company ”IKEA” was chosen as the case for the empirical studies of this thesis.

Job Satisfaction among Afghan Teacher Educators.: A study of Job Satisfaction in four Teacher Training Colleges in northern Afghanistan.2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 40 credits / 60 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Job satisfaction is a much disputed issue in the field of education, because it affects the system in many ways and may affect productivity and achievements of an organization. This descriptive study is aimed to find out the level of teacher educators’ job satisfaction in relation to their personal demographics such as gender, age, years of experience, level of education, marital status and location.

The study was conducted by using convenient sampling with the participation of 132 teacher educators of four neighbouring provinces (Balkh, Jawzjan, Samangan and Sarepul) in the north zone of Afghanistan. The data of the study were collected via five-point Likert scale questionnaire including six aspects of job satisfaction (job itself, supervision, promotion, colleagues, salary and work condition).

The data analysis was based on the frequency and percentages of the responses and the following results are reported:

Most of the teacher educators were satisfied with the job itself and with relation to colleagues. The least satisfying aspects among them were salary and work condition. The study also revealed the fact that apart from location there were no significant relations between job satisfaction aspects and other selected demographics of this study. Location had a significant relation with two aspects of job satisfaction namely supervision and work condition. Finally, according to the findings of the present study some recommendations are added.

"Jag behöver någon som förstår mig": En kvalitativ studie om mödrars upplevelse av relationen till handläggaren under kontaktfamiljsprocessen2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]
