Utvärdering av Mobilt resursteam Karlstad2019Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This qualitative study aimed at exploratory describe ambulance staff’s perceptions of patients

with mental illness and how they view their role when attending these cases. Ten employees

within the ambulance participated in the study and semi-structured interviews were used in

collecting data. Thematic analysis was used for analyzing data. From the analysis three main

themes that narrate ambulance staff’s perceptions of patients with mental illness were created.

The first theme was The challenge in facing patients with mental illness. The theme has three

sub-themes, Valuable attributes and abilities, The encounter and treatment and Staff’s safety.

The second main theme, Frustration and feelings of insufficiency, includes two sub-themes,

The inaccessible care and The need for knowledge. The third main theme The perceptions of

the assignment and the patient includes no sub-themes but stands on its own.

In the stories of ambulance staff’s perceptions of patients with mental illness it’s made visible

how the role of the ambulance staff, when attending these cases, becomes the one of a fellow

creature before the patient and a negotiator before other organisations. Aspects that cause

barriers for nursing in these situations are also highlighted, like an inaccessible psychiatric

care and different approaches within the ambulance.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish curriculum for preschool were revised in 2010. In the updated and developed version of the curriculum science has been given greater emphasis with new and improved course objectives. One reason for the revision was the decline in interest for science later in life and the drop in number of students who pursue a higher education in science. The preschool teachers now have the responsibility to include the subject in the daily routine. Thus, the management must see to that the teaching staff possesses the skillset necessary to complete the task at hand. The purpose of this study is to investigate which impact the revised curriculum has had regarding science in preschool. Further, the aim is to investigate what kind of support the teachers have had with the curriculum and if they, themselves, consider their skillset to be adequate to fulfill the course objectives. To answer the questions posed, a qualitative interview method was used. Nine interviews were conducted out of which six with preschool teachers and three with preschool managers. The results indicate that the teaching staff does not fully comprehend the curriculum or how to use it in regard to science and the use of science in the preschools. The study has also shown that the lack of support during the implementation of the revised curriculum may potentially have had a negative effect on the will and skillset of the teaching staff thus hampering the work with the course objectives. To be able to give science an equal part in the curriculum as other subjects and to expand the work with science in the preschools further education of the teaching staff is needed, as well as more support from the management.

Feedback and digitalization: A qualitative study of the feedback methods of Swedish teachers of English at upper secondary school2019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine what methods Swedish teachers of English use to give feedback on students’ written production and what factors influence them to choose these methods. An additional aim was to find out what teachers’ experiences are of digitalization in relation to feedback on students’ written production. Five semi-structured, qualitative interviews were conducted with five certified English teachers who were currently active in upper secondary school. The results showed that the teachers used different methods when giving feedback on students’ written productions. Nonetheless, all of them mostly use formative feedback in the form of written comments. Four out of five respondents let their students submit texts through digital tools, Itslearning or DigiExam, but then printed them and handed them back with handwritten feedback of different sorts. One respondent gave all feedback electronically. When the teachers chose their methods, the most influential factors were available time, lacking student engagement and the fact that the school management team chose which digital tools that should be used. The fact that no teachers were involved in the decision about which digital tools should be used severely limits teacher autonomy and may be the reason why at least two of my respondents did not want to use these tools, which in their experience do not meet their feedback needs.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate parental perceptions of the significance of reading aloud for children ́s reading development at home and in school, and the interaction between home and school in the area concerned. The aim is also to examine if the parents ́ socio- cultural background influence their perceptions. The study was conducted in cooperation with a project that took place in the first grade at a public school in Sweden, which aimed to strengthen the cooperation between home and school.

The socio-cultural perspective forms the study ́s theoretical basis and its methodological approach is based on phenomenology. The empirical data consist of a survey and qualitative interviews with the intention to get to know the parents ́ own perceptions. As for the informants involved in the study, they have been selected among the parents of the children who are participating in the first year of the project.

The study highlights that the parental perspective has largely been lacking previous research. The results of the study indicate that the parents ́ socio-cultural background does not have any significant impact on their perceptions of the significance of reading aloud for children at home and in school. Parents perceive that reading aloud at home and in school and a collaboration between home and school are important for children ́s reading development. The study also finds that the parents see themselves as important actors when it comes to reading aloud situations, which in itself beneficial for the children ́s reading development.

"If I Could Think of Somewhere to Go": Alienation in S.E. Hinton's Rumble Fish2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay focuses on the alienation experienced by Rusty-James in S.E. Hinton’s Rumble Fish (1975). It more specifically centers on the causes of his alienation and how the alienation is illustrated in the novel. The analysis shows that the alienation Rusty-James experiences is caused partly by socioeconomic factors; for example his lack of hope for the future is closely connected to the fact that he belongs to a low socioeconomic class. In addition, there are also psychological factors, for example a childhood trauma. The alienation and its causes are mainly illustrated through the symbolism of the featured Siamese fighting fish and how Rusty-James’ relationships are depicted.

Textmöten i hemmet: Lärare i årskurs 1-3 syn på elevers digitaliserade läsning utanför skolan2016Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to contribute knowledge about how some students in the 9th grade perceive the learning environment, and the process of inclusive education, in the classroom in which they study Swedish. It also aims to present their thoughts on how the learning environment can be improved to support the development of reading and writing skills. The theoretical framework of this study is a sociocultural perspective on learning. The method chosen is a form of qualitative structured group interview. The questions are based on the aim of the study, where the student perspective plays a central part of the content.

The results of this study show the importance of overcoming obstacles in the physical, pedagogical and social learning environment to create inclusive and beneficial conditions concerning students´ reading and writing skills. Actions surrounding the learning environment create a secure and functioning school where all students have the possibility to develop. The results also show the importance of letting students provide their perspective on an accessible learning environment. To listen to students and to allow the students´ voices to be heard are significant parts of the school curriculum. Children and students have a right to participation as this creates a sense of security, which is a condition for learning to be acquired.

Medarbetares upplevelse av en organisationsförändring: En kvalitativ studie om företagets betydelse i ett litet samhälle2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to try to interpret interactions between social worker and adoptive parents during the adoption process from a power perspective. The study was inspired by a hermeneutic inductive approach because we were interested in the interpretation of the empirical material. The study was conducted using four qualitative interviews with a total of seven people, four adoptive parents and three social workers. The collected material is then analyzed using a content analysis. To interpret the contact between the adoptive parents and social workers, we have used a power perspective. Our study showed that the applicant, generally speaking, was positive to that an investigation was made based on “the child’s interest”, but experienced some of the questions as intrusive. They found that the assessment made was crucial for the decision, and that it easily can vary from case to case for the decision and that the assessment can certainly vary in different cases. The social workers did not feel that they had any noticeable power, because they do not make the final decision. Their assessment was partly based on laws and guidelines that set the context, for example, how old the applicants may be and the requirement that the applicants must be married. Assessments are also made on the social worker’s individual characteristics based on the applicant's personal qualities such as insight and ability to care for a child.

Fiolpedagoger inom genren svensk folkmusik: En intervjustudie om undervisningsmetoder och pedagogiska förhållningssätt2014Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether there are fundamental differences in methodologies and pedagogical approach between violin pedagogues of the genre of Swedish folk music. The comparison focuses on teachers with and without formal music teacher education in the genre. Four qualitative telephone interviews were the basis for the study, where two people each represented those with and without a degree. The theoretical starting point for the study has been the socio-cultural perspective. The results demonstrate that there is more connecting than separating the four teachers ate. Here is an emphasis on ear training teaching, joy and musical function, which belongs to the tradition of the Swedish folk music genre. This way of working is connected to the socio-cultural perspective, where tradition, social context, and physical artefacts are in focus. However, it is possible to see a clearer part of institutionalized knowledge among the teachers with formal teaching qualification. These teachers have a greater use of notes and a slightly more pronounced progression in education. They also have a greater openness to all music, while those without a music teacher education more purely focuses on Swedish folk music and what the genre's history is based on.

Identitets- och åtkomsthantering hos Karlstads kommun: En intervjustudie bland IT-personal2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this qualitative study is to examine how the individuals working on Första linjen have experienced how the operation has worked since the start of spring 2015. A qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the gathered material. Semi structured interviews were performed with five individuals working at Första linjen. Results show that client loads fluctuates in waves with more loads before and after school breaks, and that girls in their late teens and younger children are two recurring groups. Further, results show that collaboration between Första linjen and adjoining agencies has been successful, but that there is still room for improvements when aligning with certain agencies. Results reveal that the breadth of work types, collaboration with adjacent agencies and the availability of the agency are distinguished strengths of Första linjen. The good availability was also distinguished as a possible weakness. According to the results, a collaborative cross-agency approach with clients is considered an area for improvements in the future. Another area of improvement is the preventive work surrounding mental illness amongst children and young persons, including information outreach. The theory of access was helpful to gain a deeper understanding of the result. No previous study has been performed regarding Första linjen in Karlstad. The study can thereby contribute knowledge to Första linjen about how the operation can sustain and develop the work to an improved mental health among children and adolescents.

Uppdrag arbetslagsledare: En kvantitativ studie om arbetslagsledares ledarskap.2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

There is a lot of knowledge today about factors that lead to increased results for the students. Nevertheless, in Sweden, we still have a high proportion of students who do not reach secondary competence in grade 9. At the school where I am principal, an analysis was conducted in the autumn term 2016 for a collaboration project with the Swedish National Agency for Education. The result of this analysis shows how the team leaders are an unutilized resource, whose mission has become more about mediate information from the principal to the team and conducting team meetings, than to lead school development processes.

In view of this, I ask the following questions:

    1)    Which leaderships do team leaders practise in different situations?

    2)    How can team leaders view for their own mission understands?

    3)    In what way do different background variables affect the way the team leader practise her leadership?

A number of hypotheses are set up in purpose to try to answer these questions and data collection is done by sending questionnaires to team leaders in various elementary schools. The background variables tested are: gender, time at workplace, time as team leader, how the assignment is assigned, the size of the team, first teacher or not, and what head of school the respondent has.

The respondents reads six different scenarios and then take a stand in different action options, based on the theories of four different leaderships: abdicated leadership, authoritative leadership, communicative leadership, and ethical leadership. There is also a fifth option where the respondent is given the opportunity an alternative of her own.

The result of the survey shows that the leadershipstyle that team leaders, regardless of  background, choose to the highest degree is the ethical-communicative. Except in scenario 1 which is about managing a case where a colleague does not comply with the norms and values of the school. An analysis of the result also shows that there must be a clear mission statement with a clear mandate that should be known by everyone. This will create greater prerequisites for the team leader to lead the necessary processes towards increased goal achievement.

    Abstract [en]

This survey is about five teachers opinions about early reading and writing. I have asked them what advantages and disadvantages they could see with starting early and how they have chosen to integrate reading and writing in kindergarten and preschool. In the past, parents and kindergarten teachers were told not to encourage and help young children to learn how to read and write. The reason was that they were afraid that the children would learn in a wrong way and that they would get bored when they start first grade in school. Today we have come further and we now have teacher staffs who are educated to meet and challenge even students who are already literate when they start school. My reviews of literature and interviews with teachers in both kindergarten and in preschool shows that the most of them are positive to early reading and writing as long as you do it the right way. The right way is to encourage children and provide them with activities, not by pushing it on them or forcing them. Most important is to let it happen on the children’s terms and with the use of playing as a method of learning.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to examine whether if siblings of children with disabilities are affected psychosocially or not. The study is based on qualitative interviews, literature and reports relevant to the topic. Respondents have presented their views on how they think children are affected by growing up as siblings to children with disabilities in autism spectrum disorders.

The result demonstrates that siblings, while growing up are being exposed to a more stress-related situation than their peers and are more neglected than children in general. The survey also found that siblings of children with a diagnosis within the autism spectrum may bring character traits such as greater empathy, maturity and responsibility. Gaining knowledge of their sibling's disability proves to be of great importance for how the children manage their lives. Through attention and professional assistance such as conversation and support the siblings are better equipped to cope with the situation, which they´re in.

The aim of this study is to investigate what role the aesthetic learning processes in historical workshops can play in developing students' historical consciousness and historical empathy. This has been investigated by interviewing six teachers who have been at Stavgard iron age camp school with their classes. The survey found that historical workshops are appreciated among teachers and students and that it is a priority in the teaching, even though this means a great financial effort for the school. The aesthetic learning processes are represented at Stavgard through practical work, stories and to some extent drama. The stay at Stavgard creates a common frame of reference for teachers and class, based on which historical consciousness is built during future history teaching. At the camp school, the pupils practice iron age life for two days, and the study shows that the pupils themselves by experiencing the hardship of the Iron Age people develop historical empathy. In addition to this, it is also described how the pre- and post-work in connection with the stay at Stavgard is designed by the different teachers.

Prometheus Abandoned: Figural Eddies as an Alternative Method of Reading Out 1: Noli me tangere2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The thesis combines D.N. Rodowick’s concept of the figural, denoting the complex nature of filmic signification; Roland Barthes’ distinctions between the readerly and the writerly, which are different methods of engaging with a text; and Thierry Kuntzel’s concept of semiotic constellations, the reading of recurring yet fragmented motifs that occur throughout the film. Here reintroduced through the concept of eddies—discursive fields within the film which displace the connection between the signifier and signified (the flow of signification), instead distinguished by signifiers engendering new signifiers (the swirl of signification)—to unlock a new method of reading a film. This method focuses on interpreting the latent meanings of the plural of the text; the residual signs in the film which hold little to no bearing on its narrative, but through their deconstruction and later reassembly they may guide to viewer to new meanings. By first delineating the method proposed for this type of reading, the thesis then applies this method to the reading of one such eddy in the art-film Out 1: Noli me tangere from 1970, which is connected to the discursive field of Prometheus Bound, a play rehearsed within the film by a group of six actors who engage in various exercises, which at first glance seem to be entirely unconnected to the play. In this case, the method reveals through the figural activity of the film that the exercises of the group are engaged in dialogue with themes touched upon in the play.

"Who am I now?" Sense of Gender and Place in Digital Gameplay: Affective Dimensions of gameplay in XCOM: Enemy Within2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this essay I analyze the ways in which gender and space are shaped and made sense of through digital gameplay. Specifically in the turn based strategy game XCOM: Enemy Within for the MacBook Air with a computer mouse as the primary input device. Using a mixed methods approach consisting of gameplay sessions of XCOM and qualitative interviews with two players regarding their gameplay I argue that earlier research on space within game studies has overlooked the ways in which the shaping of space in gameplay is also gendered. Developing a theoretical framework influenced by gender studies, critical theory, affect theory, assemblage theories of space, and game theory, I argue for how the shaping of space and gender in game-play is interdependent. This in that the shaping of space and gender in digital gameplay is in constant relation and tension with societal norms and the affective capacities of bodies and digital games. In conclusion, I reflect on the possibilities to develop more empirical research based on the the theoretical framework explored in the essay.

Aspects of Substance displacement - from illicit drugs to novel psychoactive substance2016In: Journal of Addiction Research & Therapy, E-ISSN 2155-6105, Vol. 7, no 3Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Several hundred new synthetic drugs, novel psychoactive substances (NPS) or “legal highs” have in recent years appeared on the drug market. These can effortlessly be obtained from on-line vendors, offering an easy access to a plethora of new and untested substances, often with unknown or dangerous effects. Several different attempts to reduce the availability of NPS and to prevent accidents and fatalities have been applied by governments around the world. Nonetheless this complex and constantly evolving situation provides palpable dilemmas and challenges to legislators and prevention strategists. One unintended consequence from prohibition and current drug policies occurs when possibly more precarious substances are used to substitute older and more well-known illicit drugs; so called “substance displacement”. We have performed extensive research on the use of NPS, by analyzing Internet resources (drug discussion forum, on-line questionnaires), and published several NPS studies. During our research we observed how substance displacement is a common issue, with implications for both clinical practices, drug prevention strategies, as well as for legislators. In the present review we discuss two common themes of substance displacement: 1) Synthetic cannabinoids replace herbal cannabis, and 2) Different attempts for self-medication using NPS. Incitements for substance displacement, that exposes the user to possibly more harmful substances, are founded both in legislation (availability of substances and fear of legal repercussions) as well as from certain policies or cultural perceptions of various medical conditions. We offer no obvious solutions to these complications, but would like to contribute to awareness of how these factors effects drug users and how measures intended to reduce harm in many cases have the opposite effects. Further studies on the divergent motivations and different groups of NPS users are highlighted as imperative to find new and realistic solutions going forward.

The slippery slope of flubromazolam: Experiences of a novel psychoactive benzodiazepine as discussed on a Swedish online forum2017In: Nordic Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, ISSN 1455-0725, E-ISSN 1458-6126, Vol. 34, no 3, p. 217-229Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aim: The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the effects experienced by users of a novel psychoactive substance, the benzodiazepine flubromazolam, by analysing users' own accounts on the Swedish forum Flashback.org. Method: A thematic analysis of anonymous self-reports published on the forum was performed and generated five general themes describing effects and experiences by flubromazolam users. Results: The themes which emerged were: Onset and duration, Desired effects, Adverse effects and addiction, Loss of control, General estimations and evaluations. The main reported characteristics of flubromazolam were heavy hypnotic and sedative effects, long-lasting amnesiac effects and the rapid development of tolerance. Flubromazolam was also anxiolytic and acted as a muscle relaxant for many users. Some users experienced euphoria or intense wellbeing. Other prominent characteristics were loss of control (leading to poor choices and actions, with unpleasant consequences) and long-lasting, often severe withdrawals. There were also serious incidents where users had been admitted to hospital, acute psychiatric treatment or taken into custody by the police. Conclusion: Flubromazolam appears to be a highly addictive and precarious benzodiazepine with many, possibly severe, side effects. The substance is generally described as very potent and with long-lasting effects. Memory loss and loss of control are common adverse effects, and withdrawals appear to be severe for many users

Twenty percent better with 20 micrograms?: A qualitative study of psychedelic microdosing self-rapports and discussions on YouTube2019In: Harm Reduction Journal, ISSN 1477-7517, E-ISSN 1477-7517, Vol. 16, no 1, article id 63Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Psychedelic microdosing is the trending practice of using tiny repeated doses of psychedelic substances to facilitate a range of supposed benefits. With only a few published studies to date, the subject is still under-researched, and more knowledge is warranted. Social media and internet discussion forums have played a vital role in the growing visibility of the microdosing phenomenon, and the present study utilized YouTube contents to improve comprehension of the microdosing practice as well as the social interactions and discussions around microdosing. Methods: Microdosing self-disclosure in YouTube videos and their following comments were qualitatively analyzed by inductive thematic analysis. Various software was utilized to enable gathering and sorting relevant data. Results: Microdosing of psychedelic substances, primarily LSD and psilocybin, was used for therapeutic and enhancement purposes, and predominantly beneficial effects were reported. Many different applications and outcomes were discussed, and therapeutic effects for depression appeared especially noteworthy. Intentions for use were recognized as an influencing factor for the progression and outcomes of microdosing. The function of social interactions was mainly to discuss views on the microdosing phenomenon, strategies for optimal results, minimize risks, and share emotional support. Conclusions: Potentially, microdosing could provide some of the same benefits (for certain conditions) as full-dose interventions with less risk of adverse reactions related to the sometimes intense experiences of higher doses. Microdosing may well also mean additional benefits, as well as risks, through the repeated exposure over extended periods.

Psychoactive substances as a last resort—a qualitative study of self-treatment of migraine and cluster headaches2017In: Harm Reduction Journal, ISSN 1477-7517, E-ISSN 1477-7517, Vol. 14, no 60Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Treatment resistant cluster headache and migraine patients are exploring alternative treatments online. The aim of this study was to improve comprehension regarding the use of non-established or alternative pharmacological treatments used by sufferers of cluster headaches and migraines.

Methods: A qualitative thematic analysis of the users’ own accounts presented in online forum discussions were conducted. The forum boards https://shroomery.org/, http://bluelight.org, and https://clusterbusters.org/ met the inclusion criteria and were used for the study.

Results: The analysis resulted in six themes: a desperate need for effective treatments; the role of the forum—finding alternative treatments and community support; alternative treatment substances; dosage and regimens; effects and treatment results; and adverse effects. The results provide an insight into why, how, and by which substances and methods sufferers seek relief from cluster headache and migraines.

Conclusions: These patients are in a desperate and vulnerable situation, and illicit psychoactive substances are often considered a last resort. There appeared to be little or no interest in psychoactive effects per se as these were rather tolerated or avoided by using sub-psychoactive doses. Primarily, psilocybin, lysergic acid diethylamide, and related psychedelic tryptamines were reportedly effective for both prophylactic and acute treatment of cluster headache and migraines. Treatment results with cannabis were more unpredictable. No severe adverse events were reported, but it was observed how desperation sometimes spurred risky behavior when obtaining and testing various treatment alternatives. The forum discourse mainly revolved around maximizing treatment results and minimizing potential harms.

The purpose of this study is to examine teaching methods to see if it is possible to develop new methods for reading comprehension. There will be a discussion which old teaching methods and modern methods are compared. The methods are used in this study are based on previous research in the area; I have also conducted two interviews with practicing teachers. The result that emerged is that the methods we use today are further developed methods of those we always had in the Swedish schools. The ongoing development of methods is mostly about developing the technical tools to facilitate students to practice reading comprehension.

Hur påverkar flyktingmottagadet turismnäringen?: En studie om kommunerna Hagfors, Säffle, Filipstad, Torsby och Kristinehamn i Värmland2016Student paper second term, 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Nyanlända afghanska elevers faktiska kunskaper i namngeografi.2016Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study examined how students with disabilities/ barriers have been included in physical education and health in curriculum (Lgr) 69, 80 and 11. This was done by conducting interviews with both male and female teachers, but also by conducting interviews with both male and female persons who attended school before Lgr 80 presented the concept  'education for all'. In school today the education has to be adapted for each individual. The interview method I used was qualitative interviews. The number of people I interviewed was different depending on which of the various issues I used. The results of this study show that teachers working with both Lgr 69 and Lgr 11 do well in getting students with disabilities / barriers included during physical education and health hour. Today's teachers, working with Lgr11 have more to plan to ensure that students can participate in activity. The observation I made was that today's teachers are working hard to ensure that students can join in and do their best on their terms in order to achieve the demands.

Hindukvinnor – sida vid sida: En kvalitativ diskursanalys över konstruktionen av hindukvinnor i svenska och indiska läroböcker2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

School is a place for identity formation. When gender and religion are studied pupils tend to perceive religion, especially non-Christian religions, as traditional and patriarchal. Female oppression in religion is also used as a way of “othering”. Religious education is rarely presenting the women’s perspective. The purpose of this study is to analyze and compare the construction of Hindu women in Swedish and Indian school textbooks. The study was conducted through discourse analysis, using Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe’ “toolbox” for identifying group identity. As a theoretical framework postcolonial theory and postcolonial feminism were used. A total of eight textbooks were examined. The results showed that the discourse of Hindu women in Swedish textbooks was not hegemonic, instead, it consisted of four different discourse. Some of them were colonial in character. Only one textbook showed Hindu women as religious agents. Women in Indian textbooks were constructed in a different way, often described as agents, working for change in a traditional society. By studying how group identity and agency are constructed in textbooks religious education can become better equipped to enable gender and religious identities in a multicultural society. Hence this thesis claims that the research between gender, religious education and multiculturalism need further inquiry.

    Abstract [en]

This qualitative study focuses to highlight the pedagogues’ experience of the pedagogic meals in preschool. In the study has six pedagogues from three different departments/preschool been interviewed. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and analyzed and then categorized. This study is based on socio-cultural perspective, where learning occurs in interaction with others and language is seen as a mediating tool.

The result of this study reveals that the pedagogues believe meals to be important for the children’s social skills. Furthermore, many learning situations occurs at mealtime and it is important that the pedagogues are good role models during the meals. The environment during the meals differs a lot, however nice and quiet sought during the meals.

In the result, it appears that all pedagogues see meals as a pedagogic situation, although special educations before the meals are never planned. It is found that even the children have the opportunity to steer the conversation during the meals and take food by themselves. The pedagogues also consider the learning of math and language develops through the conversation during the meals.

En explorativ studie om synen kring vård och behandling på ett friskinriktat internetforum för personer med symtom på ätstörningar2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to gain an in-depth understanding of how a preschool can work with the subjects of science and technology in a well-thought-out way. The purpose of the study is also to provide more knowledge about which different ways pedagogues can use and develop the children's interest in technology and physics. The study is qualitative and has been carried out by studying documentation from social media published by the preschool. The documentation has since been a basis for the semi-structured interviews that were conducted. To reach the result, the phenomenographic analysis model has been used.

The result shows that the three teachers interviewed at this preschool see no obstacles to working with the subjects of science and technology with the youngest children, 1-3 years, even though they lack a formal in-depth education in the subjects. The preschool teachers only see opportunities. To create the best conditions for teaching science and technology the preschool has worked out a community of practice inspired by Reggio Emilia.

    Abstract [en]

The intention with this study is to look into what and how children at the age of two and a half and three years old expresses about bridges. The study is qualitative and have been completed with unstructured pre- and after interveiews and participant observation with two different groups with in total four children that have been introduced to different materials representing bridges. The difference between the materials is that the first group in the pre interview have been introduced to a toy representing a bridge that the children know from before and a book with the three Billy goats, unlike the second group that had no connection to a story. In the study the four children have been in two different groups. All children in age two and a half to three years old have been completed a pree interview before they went to town to search for bridges and a following interview after that. The results are based on all of the occasions. The children expressed their understanding of the bridge`s function about crossing over to reach the other side. The fence is needed to not roll over and can be a protection. The bridge also often have a stairs so you can go up on the bridge. The results shows that the children talks about bridges through for them known stories and games regardless if they did get a story presented or not. Through the childrens telling and playing, the study shows that the children possess understanding of the function of the bridge because of their explanations about how you need to walk over the bridge to cross over to the other side and not get wet. The children also talks about the different parts like fence and stairs and their function to the bridge.

They leave everything behind in the Netherlands;friends, family, jobs and careers in order to start a new life in what theycall the land of opportunities, namely Sweden. Here, in the county ofVärmland in a little, rural town named Hagfors they see a chance to a brighterfuture and the possibility of accomplishing a better quality of life. They wantto buy houses, start companies and explore a new way of life in this land ofpromises. While people are migrating from the Netherlands, inhabitants ofHagfors are moving out to big, urban cities that can offer more possibilities. This is the reality for many rural areas like Hagfors, they lose populationthrough out-migration. Despite the negative population trend, the municipalityregains some of its lost inhabitants through the international migration fromlarge Dutch cities. The purpose of this thesis is to examine how the practiceof place marketing has been used by Hagfors municipality in order to attractnew inhabitants from the Netherlands. Which place marketingstrategies have been utilized by Hagfors, how can the effect of theseapproaches be measured and how is the Hagfors brand perceived by the Dutch immigrants? These are the research questions that have been answered through qualitativeinterviews with municipal employees and Dutch immigrants. The results implythat Hagfors have marketed themselves through the internet and the EmigrationExpo in Utrecht but these strategies have not had any effect on the immigrants’motives for moving to the area. Instead of actively tryingto receive more immigrants to the area Hagfors municipality should invest timeand money on the Dutchmen who are already living in the area. The conclusion that Hagfors has not developed a brand platform has preventedthe Dutch immigrants from creating a uniform image of the brand.

Pilotstudier avanvändargränssnitt till app för smärtpatienter2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Abstract  The purpose with my thesis work is to provide information about the importance of reading aloud for children’s future reading comprehension and inclination to read. Thru literature and resurge within the subject I highlight different effects that reading aloud can accomplish. Resurge within the subject shows that parents today read less to their children than earlier, a trend that seems to continue. To see how the reading aloud habits look like in an ordinary class my work contains a parent survey where these issues are to be accounted for in the results section. Even the pupils has participated in a survey with the aim to find out what they think about reading aloud and if someone read to them at home.     The work also includes two interviews with teachers where their thoughts and practices are presented, teachers’ opinions and practices are then connected to the literature on the subject in a discussion. The results of my survey show that reading aloud is so much more than just cozy. The literature and the interviewed teachers say that the purpose shows the many positive effects that reading aloud can provide. Teachers tell us that the purpose of their reading aloud is to give the students an enjoyable time, where they can unwind and just enjoy. They also talk about the goal of reading aloud is to arouse students' love of reading while the students get a chance to develop their thoughts and imagination. In the end, the teachers hope that reading aloud will inspire students to read to themselves.    The work highlights a book project, which means that preschool children receive free books from the municipality. The project is paid for by the educational board of the municipality and has been going on for almost 20 years. Through the parent survey, I have gathered facts about how common it is to collect the free book and what the parents think about the book project. The results of my study do not match properly with the library results in the proportion of children who pick up their free books. According to the library fetches 80% their books while my survey shows that 65% pick up their free books. Parents who have not picked out their children's books gave several reasons for this; the most common answer was that they simply forgot it. The parents who picked their children books spoke positively about the book project, stressing the need on the importance of books for children.

När kunden inte ser: En sociologisk studie om tågpersonals emotionella arbete2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The interest in emotional labor has increased due to the development of norms that service workers always should be nice and fond have increased. Research in this area exhibit both negative consequences in form of burnouts and positive in form of an increased understanding in other people. The aim of the study was to create an understanding of how a couple of train conductors experience their work in relation to the feelings, roles and relationships that surround them. The study is based on four qualitative interviews that have been analysed with emotion and interaction oriented theories. The results show that the use of emotions was common in the profession and the respondents of the study claim to act a role which they adapt to the customers’ expectations. These expectations can sometimes end up in a conflict between the professional role and the private role where the own feelings and respect weights more than the adaption to the customers’ expectations. The respondents in the study were found to have created different strategies, open and hidden, that can be used in order to get the customer to be notified of their behavior as well as it works to manage the emotional labor. The results also show how the colleagues and the opportunity to go away and discuss difficult customer meetings are important factors when it comes to relate to the emotional labor. Overall, there is room to affect the emotional labor which also been proven to be beneficial for the job satisfaction.

Kvinnor i försvarsmakten: En textanalys om motståndet mot kvinnor2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is first and foremost to examine how the treatment of Nordic and non-Nordic migrant worker groups differed from each other during the time period 1947 to 1964, seen through the lens of the Swedish authorities. The study focuses primarily on the ”landsfiskal,” a now defunct civil servant position that served as a combination of prosecutor, bailiff and chief constable, as well as Statens Utlänningskommission, whose modern equivalent is the Swedish Migration Agency. The study is a blend of qualitative and quantitative research, using qualitative methods to determine if and how the treatment of different migrant groups differed by way of studying official protocols and  other documents from the landsfiskal and Statens Utlänningskommission, as well as using the same material in a quantitative manner to support the qualitative study by determining which migrant groups appear in the study and how many members each group has.

It is clear that the treatment of Nordic and non-Nordic migrant workers differed quite heavily during this time period, with the Swedish state showing great distrust and wariness toward the non-Nordic migrant groups, those from Eastern Europe in particular, and attempting to control them through such things as travel restrictions. Certain Nordic migrants have such restrictions and other methods of control placed on them as well, but not nearly to the extent or severity of those placed on the non-Nordic migrants. The exact reasons for the distrust and wariness displayed by the Swedish authorities has been unable to be determined.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the paper is through a touristic view to see how the zoos have developed to modern zoss and interview Djurens Rätt and Skansen to see their view on "animal welfare". Another part of the paper is to see what the public thinks of animal welfare and if it's crucial when they choose a destination. We used a survey to see if the public has been influenced by any media in the aspect of their view of zoos. By seeing the evolution of zoos to the modern zoo, we can see how society had the power to influence.

Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to carry out three in-depth text analyzes with a focus on characters, and then relate the analysis to a didactic perspective. The study analyzes characters from three children's books; Dagspöket möter ett spöke, Örjan – den höjdrädda örnen and Edward Tulanes fantastiska resa. The selection of books is based on the fact that all three have animals as main characters. The analyzes are carried out with the help of close reading and tools linked to character descriptions and they focus on the character's characteristics, dynamics and its human characteristics. The place of analysis in the didactic space is discussed in relation to the narratology and the transactional perspective. The result shows that all the character analyzes generate discussion data regarding issues of fundamental importance, however in different subjects and scope. The discussion demonstrates the importance of the pedagogue having good knowledge about the text analysis and its concepts, mainly in order to be able to ensure in a competent manner the right book for the right discussion.

    Abstract [en]

This report demonstrates my research on how students may improve their progress in course with the help of journal writing. I have based my research on two courses within the Restaurant, bar and wine program at Studium Hospitality & Bakery in Gothenburg.

I came up with the idea for the research when I noticed how the students experienced little to no feedback and didn´t really understand what they should do to excel in their courses.

The purpose of the research is to develop a practical and easy-to-work journal and to find out if journal writing can improve the communication between teachers and teacher students. To achieve this I implemented a journal in two courses.

The feedback from the students was positive. They thought the journals quickly became a natural tool to be able to see their own progress and also, they were able to have an ongoing interaction between teacher and student.

In conclusion the journal has given a better overview of the progress a student makes during the course. The journal works as a tool to oversee attendance and it is also an important communication channel between student and teacher. Through the work with the journal the students document their own progression within the course, hence will be able to detect the next step of their development. The journal gives the students the opportunity to discuss which elements of the course have been critical to reach increased progression.  It has also given the teachers an important tool to develop their teaching.
