Automated Testing of IDS Rules2015In: Software Testing, Verification and Validation Workshops (ICSTW), 2015 IEEE Eighth International Conference on, IEEE conference proceedings, 2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

As technology becomes ubiquitous, new vulnerabilities are being discovered at a rapid rate. Security experts continuously find ways to detect attempts to exploit those vulnerabilities. The outcome is an extremely large and complex rule set used by Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) to detect and prevent the vulnerabilities. The rule sets have become so large that it seems infeasible to verify their precision or identify overlapping rules. This work proposes a methodology consisting of a set of tools that will make rule management easier.

IDS rule management made easy2016In: Electronics, Computers and Artificial Intelligence (ECAI), 2016 8th International Conference on, IEEE conference proceedings, 2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Signature-based intrusion detection systems (IDSs) are commonly utilized in enterprise networks to detect and possibly block a wide variety of attacks. Their application in industrial control systems (ICSs) is also growing rapidly as modem ICSs increasingly use open standard protocols instead of proprietary. Due to an ever changing threat landscape, the rulesets used by these IDSs have grown large and there is no way to verify their precision or accuracy. Such broad and non-optimized rulesets lead to false positives and an unnecessary burden on the IDS, resulting in possible degradation of the security. This work proposes a methodology consisting of a set of tools to help optimize the IDS rulesets and make rule management easier. The work also provides attack traffic data that is expected to benefit the task of IDS assessment.

Multipath TCP IDS Evasion and Mitigation2015In: Information Security: 18th International Conference, ISC 2015, Trondheim, Norway, September 9-11, 2015, Proceedings, Springer, 2015, Vol. 9290, p. 265-282Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The existing network security infrastructure is not ready for future protocols such as Multipath TCP (MPTCP). The outcome is that middleboxes are configured to block such protocols. This paper studies the security risk that arises if future protocols are used over unaware infrastructures. In particular, the practicality and severity of cross-path fragmentation attacks utilizing MPTCP against the signature-matching capability of the Snort intrusion detection system (IDS) is investigated. Results reveal that the attack is realistic and opens the possibility to evade any signature-based IDS. To mitigate the attack, a solution is also proposed in the form of the MPTCP Linker tool. The work outlines the importance of MPTCP support in future network security middleboxes.

    Abstract [en]

Multipath TCP (MPTCP) is a proposed extension to TCP that enables a number of performance advantages that have not been offered before. While the protocol specification is close to being finalized, there still remain some unaddressed challenges regarding the deployment and security implications of the protocol. This work attempts to tackle some of these concerns by proposing and implementing MPTCP aware security services and deploying them inside a proof of concept MPTCP proxy. The aim is to enable hosts, even those without native MPTCP support, to securely benefit from the MPTCP performance advantages. Our evaluations show that the security services that are implemented enable proper intrusion detection and prevention to thwart potential attacks as well as threshold rules to prevent denial of service (DoS) attacks.

A Wireless Intrusion Detection System for 802.11 networks2016In: PROCEEDINGS OF THE 2016 IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS, SIGNAL PROCESSING AND NETWORKING (WISPNET), IEEE conference proceedings, 2016, p. 828-834Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Wireless local area networks (WLANs) deployment is increasing rapidly. At the same time, WLANs have become an attractive target for many potential attackers. In spite of that, the de facto standard used to implement most WLANs (IEEE 802.11) has what appear to be residual vulnerabilities related to identity spoofing. In this paper, a pragmatic study of two common attacks on the standard is conducted. These attacks are then implemented on test beds to learn attack behavior. Finally, novel attack signatures and techniques to detect these attacks are devised and implemented in a proof of concept Wireless Intrusion Detection System (WIDS).

Joint User Association and Backhaul Routing for Green 5G Mesh Millimeter Wave Backhaul Networks2017In: Proceedings Of The 20Th Acm International Conference On Modelling, Analysis And Simulation Of Wireless And Mobile Systems, ASSOC COMPUTING MACHINERY, , 2017, p. 179-186Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

With the advance of fifth generation (5G) networks, network density needs to grow significantly in order to meet the required capacity demands. A massive deployment of small cells may lead to a high cost for providing. ber connectivity to each node. Consequently, many small cells are expected to be connected through wireless links to the umbrella eNodeB, leading to a mesh backhaul topology. This backhaul solution will most probably be composed of high capacity point-to-point links, typically operating in the millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency band due to its massive bandwidth availability. In this paper, we propose a mathematical model that jointly solves the user association and backhaul routing problem in the aforementioned context, aiming at the energy efficiency maximization of the network. Our study considers the energy consumption of both the access and backhaul links, while taking into account the capacity constraints of all the nodes as well as the fulfillment of the service-level agreements (SLAs). Due to the high complexity of the optimal solution, we also propose an energy efficient heuristic algorithm (Joint), which solves the discussed joint problem, while inducing low complexity in the system. We numerically evaluate the algorithm performance by comparing it not only with the optimal solution but also with reference approaches under different traffic load scenarios and backhaul parameters. Our results demonstrate that Joint outperforms the state-of-the-art, while being able to find good solutions, close to optimal, in short time.

User Association in 5G Heterogeneous Networks with Mesh Millimeter Wave Backhaul Links2017In: 2017 IEEE 18th International Symposium on A World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM), IEEE, 2017Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Fifth generation (5G) wireless networks will target at energy and spectrum efficient solutions to cope with the increasing demands in capacity and energy efficiency. To achieve this joint goal, dense networks of small cells (SCs) are expected to overlay the existing macro cells. In parallel, for the SC connection to the core network, a promising solution lies in a mesh network of high capacity millimeter wave backhaul (BH) links. In the considered 5G architecture, each SC is able to forward its BH traffic to the core network through alternative paths, thus offering high BIT network reliability. In this context, the joint problem of user association and HI routing becomes challenging. In this paper, we focus on this problem targeting at energy and spectrum efficient solutions. A low-complexity algorithm is proposed, which bases its user association and BIT routing decision i) on minimizing the spectrum resources to guarantee the user rate, so as to provide high spectrum efficiency, and ii) on minimizing both the access network and BH route power consumption to provide high energy efficiency. Our results show that our solution provides better trade-offs between energy and spectrum efficiency than the state-of-the-art in 3GPP scenarios.

Skogsarbete förr, nu och i framtiden - och organisationsteoretisk förnyelse2014In: Arbetsmarknad & Arbetsliv, ISSN 1400-9692, Vol. 20, no 1, p. 79-91Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Konsum Värmland - en god portion värmländsk framtidstro2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

”Konsum Värmland, a good portion of future trust” These are the words that decorate Konsum Värmlands buildings on Tullholmen in Karlstad. During the past couple of years, the competition in the convenience goods- industry has increase and one way to strengthen ones position is to have a strong brand. This thesis is a study of how consumer attitudes can affect the value of a brand. Our thesis is based on the question whether Konsum Värmlands identity and business concept has reached out to the consumers in Värmland. The concept of having three brands that benefit Värmland is unique and a topic that laid the ground for a study with interesting theory-part, method and conclusions. A quantitative study with 84 respondents was carried out, where a unique method (MindMiner™) was used. We used MindMiner™ because we wanted to reach the consumers spontaneous associations with a minimum of influence. We calculated an attitude-score from the answers that shows the consumers attitude to Konsum Värmand. This method generates both positive and negative attitude-scores, which gives us an indication of what plays a leading roll of why consumers like/dislike Konsum Värmland. The result shows that associations associated with their product-selection, service/performance and their business concept had the most leading roll to why consumers chose and like Konsum Värmland. The theory-part is based partly on Aakers model and partly on Feldwicks model for how brands equity is created. Aaker talks about four dimensions; brand knowledge, perceived quality, brand associations and brand loyalty. Feldwick argues that the consumers perception of the corporate identity also plays a roll for the brand equity. These models both describe what is important for a company when they want to build a strong brand. By measuring the attitudes to Konsum Värmland we can make conclusions of how their brand is perceived. The consumers that was included in the survey showed differences in the attitude towards Konsum Värmland in three age intervals; ”<30 year”, ”30-49 year” and ”>=50 year”. The youngest age group had the lowest attitude-score to Konsum Värmland, while the oldest age group had the highest attitude-score. The middle group had the middle score. By using a model called “the Relationship model” the consumers relation to Konsum Värmland could be studied. The older segment showed a closer relation to Konsum Värmland, while the younger segment showed a more shallow relation to them. Through our practical study we also reached a theoretical conclusion. According to Feldwick the four dimensions that Aaker describes to measure a brands value is not enough. Feldwicks opinion is that the corporate identity is important to consider when measuring a brands equity. Trough our study of Konsum Värmland we discovered that the identity plays a big part in how the consumers perceive the company. This affects Konsum Värmland in numerous ways and we have therefore drawn the conclusion that Feldwicks model is better suited for measuring brand equity.

Lärares kunskap om ADHD: Finns det ett samband mellan kunskap, attityder inför och bemötande av elever med diagnosen?2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to map out if there were a relation between teachers knowledge about ADHD and their emotionell attitudes towards students with the diagnosis and to map out if there were a relation between teachers knowledge about ADHD and their choice of strategy used in the classroom to meet students with ADHD. The study was conducted as a survey study among teachers in grade 1 – 9. The teachers where to answear knowledge questions and self-rated questions about emotionell attitude and their choice of strategy. A link to a web survey was emailed to 400 principals in Swedish elementary schools. If the principal approved that the school participated in the survey he/she forwarded the email to the teachers. The survey was a remodeled version of the survey used by Kos (2004). The result of the survey was then processed as six linear regression analysis. The result shows a significant relation between teachers knowledge about ADHD, their emotionell attitude towards students with ADHD and their self-rated choice of strategy.

    Abstract [en]

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common diagnosis in its area. ADHD is a risk factor for several public health problems such as substance abuse, crime and mental illness and that’s why the diagnosis should be met with early, health promoting, preventing and supportive interventions to both the individual and his/her relatives. The over all aim of the present study is to examine well-being, relationships and substance abuse among adolescent with the diagnosis ADHD with adolescent without ADHD as reference.Data of total 4112 adolescent who, in the school year 2015/2016, were attending 7th grade or 1st grade in high school were obtained d from the Pupil Health Database in the county of Värmland, Sweden. Data included information about diagnosis, well-being, relationships and substance abuse and data were based on the questionnaire, filled out by the adolescent in connection with the mandatory health examinations. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and logistic regression and of all the adolescent 269 had the diagnosis ADHD.The adolescent with ADHD generally had lower well-being (aOR = 6,7), poorer relationships (aOR = 4,94) and they used more tobacco (aOR = 3,49), narcotics (aOR = 10,66) and alcohol (aOR = 1,35).The result of the present study confirmed earlier studies done in other countries and showed that adolescent with ADHD is a risk group for several major public health problems. The result shows the importance of early interventions for the target group to promote health and to prevent illness and risky behavior later in life.

    Abstract [en]

The Baltic sea has always been an important transit hub for neighboring countries and the sea have made it possible for the countries to trade with each other and thus create an international trade among themselves to each other. During 1700-1800's, the production took off and because of the mercantilism international trade developed. To establish their exchange rate, many countries have followed different standards, such as the gold standard where the currency's value was determined from the value of the corresponding quantity of gold which implies that the exchange rates were fixed. Based on the gold standard different theories was developed, such as the law of one price and purchasing power parity with the principles that a single currency will have the same purchasing power in other countries, which implies that a commodity should be bought for the same amount of currency, whether it is domestic or foreign. These theories have been studied several times, both for the short and long term, with the few countries to a greater number.

In order to test this, two econometric tests of the variables were made, stationarity test and cointegration test. The stationarity test showed that all variables except the time series that was used to test relative PPP suffered from non-stationarity and therefore needed to be differentiated to be used to test the PPP. The cointegration test showed that no one of the time series suffered of cointegration and therefore further correction models was not needed to be done.

The results from the econometric estimates showed that absolute and relative PPP could not be confirmed, nor denied, since no significant coefficients were identified. In the testing of real exchange rate for relative PPP significant time series were given but not in accordance with the nullhypothesis and therefore the null hypothesis is rejected that the relative PPP holds. From the results it is concluded that the PPP cannot be confirmed without that further studies must be done.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The stockholm county proposed legislation in 2010 on the use of studded tires in the city. The aim of the policy was to reduce the use of studded tires by 50 percent. The research question investigates the authenticity of the policy where it was hypothesized that the net social benefits for the imposition of this charge was less than or equal to zero. Emperical literatures were chosen systematically and with the help of theories on welfare economics, a meta analysis was employed quantifying cost and benefits of all outcomes. The findings shows that the NSB is less than zero meaning that it was a wise decision to reject the proposal.

Communication without borders: A quantitative study on how mobility and a cosmopolitan self-identity affect Swedish expatriates communication patterns with friends.2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to find out how Swedish voluntary migrants communicate with friends in three different groups: friends that resides in the same country as the respondent currently lives in, friends in Sweden, friends in other countries around the globe and whether or not individual mobility, demographic factors or a sense of global citizenship affect the chosen mean of communication. The reason behind the study is to introduce a previously unstudied area into the field of geographically based media studies and hopefully contribute to a deeper understanding of the role played by different means of communication in shaping the dynamics of global friendship. The theoretical approach in this study will be from three different outlooks, migration, polymedia (including the second-level digital divide) and cosmopolitanism.

The study is based on data from the Institute for Society, Opinion and Media (SOM) and their survey questionnaire sent out to Swedish expatriates during fall 2014 / winter 2015, also known as Utlands-SOM. The total number of respondents are 2268. The study starts with basic frequencies to find out which media that are the most prominent, then binary logistic regressions have been made. The total number of dependent variables are 21 and these have then been analysed from seven independent variables; age, gender, education, travel patterns, years spent abroad, number of countries lived in and whether or not the respondent consider himself/herself being a cosmopolitan. This generates a total of seven tables (one for each media) with three models in each (contact with friends in current country of residency, contact with friends in Sweden and contact with friends in other parts of the world).

Amongst Swedish expatriates, e-mail and Facebook are the two most popular media for keeping in touch with friends, regardless of the friends location. The most significant demographic variable is age. Usage of video call, text message, chat, Facebook and other social media tend to decrease with age. Every year spent abroad decreases the communication with friends in Sweden, but increases the communication in the current country of residency. The number of countries lived in have a positive effect on communication with friends in other parts of the world. Cosmopolitan self-identity is found to be most significant when communicating with friends in other parts of the world, and it also affects e-mail the most. Level of education, which in previous studies have been found closely linked to a cosmopolitan identity, is found to have no significant correlation. Arguably, this is explained by the other means of communications negative relationship with the variable.

Hungerns Ansikte: En studie av nyhetsrapporteringen om det svältdrabbade Afrikas horn 20112013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to examine whether or not American and British newspapers coverage of the famine at the horn of Africa 2011 developed and changed from a month before to a month after the UN declared famine on July 20th the same year. It also studies if and how the focus has changed in contrast to prior coverage of African famines, since the coverage of events is key for the world-wide response.

Questions asked in this paper is; To what extent did the frequency in coverage change after July 20th in correlation to theories of crisis reporting? How does both countries score on the positive/negative content scale in comparison with previous images of Africa and compassion fatigue? In what ways does the coverage differ prior to and after July20th in relation to crisis reporting? How is the reporting country framed in the articles, that is; what kind of attention does the country in question get for its actions?

This paper is based on theoretical approaches of news framing, news coverage on crisis and catastrophes, compassion fatigue (the gradual lessening of compassion experienced by an audience that has gotten used to a certain way of reporting). This study is a combination of quantitative and qualitative content analysis where the data has been collected through quantitative methods in order to create categories for frames as well as making it possible to compare data between both countries in a concrete way. Thereafter the results has been analyzed qualitatively.

The frequency in reporting amongst the 67 articles reviewed in this study increased after July 20th and that showed that a catastrophe will increase the coverage just as theories about crisis reporting predicted. The publishing in this study falls on the negative side of reporting, which is correct accordingly to theories on crisis reporting, but also to compassion fatigue and framing. The content barely changed, but for the American papers it became slightly more positive after July 20th. The British papers on the other hand increased their negative content. The outspoken primary focus on the countries ownportrayal were minimal, which is inconsistent with theories of African media portrayal.

Portfolio som arbetsredskap i skolan.: En studie kring portfolio och dataprogrammet Portfolio Manager 2.2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 40 points / 60 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Portfolio methodology and digital portfolio for pupils are nowadays well known conceptions. These two things, just as one of the computer programmes developed in purpose to be an active digital portfolio for pupils, have an essential part of this study. Portfolio Manager 2, which is the name of the programme, is developed in Sweden, by Swedish pedagogues.

The study has a quantitative disposition, with questionnaires as instrument. A gender and special needs approach was part of the study, which resulted in new pedagogical experiences. The study was made at 2 different Swedish schools, in 5 classes in form 5. The subject was woodworks and textile craft. The teacher questionnaire was shaped in such a manner that it could provide a judgement of the “phenomena” PM2 as a unit, since PM2 also consists from tools of the more administrative kind.

The result of the study corroborates earlier studies, which was that the use of portfolio helps pupils in their learning process. The study also shows that girls in form 5, more than boys in the same age group, understand the connection between learning and portfolio methodology. Further more this examination points out that the software Portfolio Manager 2 is very user-friendly, both for pupils using digital portfolio as well as for teachers as an administrative tool.

The school subject woodworks and textile craft is not the primary object of the study, but is discussed in the text through the “excess information” from the questionnaires. The result regarding the school subject woodworks and textile craft was positive.

    Abstract [en]

Sweden became a member of the European Union in 1995. When Sweden entered the Union the government also agreed on implementing every law, regulation and directive the Union have and will have in force. One directive the Union wants every country to implement is the Directive (93/104/EG) concerning certain aspects of the organization of working time. This directive includes regulations concerning the relationship between employer and employees. The regulations in the directive must be in force before January 1 2007.

One of the main points in the directive is the possibility for the parties on the labour market to reach agreements through collective agreements that deviate from the legislation concerning work hours. When the directive is a part of the Swedish law system the possibility for employer and employees to deviate from legislation concerning work hours in collective agreements will be limited through an EG-barrier. The EG-barrier sets a limit for the parties on the labour market to reach collective agreements if the agreement means worse conditions for the employees.

The possibility for the parties on the labour market to abscond the legislation concerning work hours is regulated in the third paragraph in the legislation concerning work hours. This article describes what other articles the parties on the labour market can abscond from. If the collective agreement contains regulations which means worse conditions for the employees the agreement declared invalid and the employer will be liable for damages.

The purpose of the essay is to examine in what extent the parties on the labour market can reach collective agreements after January 1, 2007.

    Abstract [en]

During year 2007 ClaraHälsan Ltd bought the company health service Solstahälsan in Karlstad. The wide merger of the two health services the problems arose around the employees’ employment agreements when certain parts of the agreement differ. At a transition of a company, in this case a health service, the rights and obligations for the employees will pass on to the new employer according to directive 2001/23/EG who came in force in the swedish legal system in year 1995. The former employer is only responsible vis-à-vis the employees ”for economic obligations related to the time before the transition, the code of protection of employment 6 b §. The new employer are committed to the old employment agreement vis-à-vis the employees during at least one year.

At a transition the employment will automatically pass on to the new employer who will take over the rights and obligations in connections to the transition. It is not the collective agreement in whole that will pass on to the new employer, only the employment conditions in the collective agreement.

The purpose of this essay is to examine what will happen to the employment conditions when two companies become one through a transition, especially pension benefits.

Gör Vågen!: Samhällsentreprenörskap med värmländska förtecken2011Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Tankar om samhällsentreprenörskapet syfte och sammanhang eller dess själ och djupare mening kan möjligen sammanfattas i två dikter av Tage Danielsson, nämligen;

Mångfaldens komplexitet2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Performance of VoIP strategies for hybrid Mobile Ad Hoc Networks2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 20 points / 30 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Last decade, a lot of research has been done in wireless communication technologies. Mobile

nodes such personal digital assistants (PDAs), notebooks and cell phones are nowadays used

    in human’s daily life.

MANETs are networks consisting of two or more mobile nodes equipped with wireless

communication and networking capabilities, but they don’t have any network centrilized

    infrastructure.

In last few years, MANETs have been emerged to be an important researched subject in the

    field of wireless networking.

MANETs are autonomous; however they can communicate with other external networks such

the internet. They are linked to such external networks by mobile nodes acting as gateways.

This kind of networks is known as hybrid MANETs.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), is a technology that allows you to make voice calls using

a Internet connection instead of a regular (or analog) phone line.

The goal of this thesis is evaluate the performance of VoIP strategies for hybrid MANETs.

Two different aspects are evaluated, the session establishment performance and the voice

    quality.

Network Simulator 2 is used to run several simulations, two different applications are used to

run voice simulations (Session Initiation Protocol and Exponential traffic generator). We

evaluate two different cases for voice traffics, voice calls between two MANET nodes and

voice calls between MANET nodes and external nodes.

After running the simulations, there are some performance parameters which will reveal the

results. The key findings of the simulations are: adding gateways, number of voice traffic

flows and the number of hops between source and destinations. There are some interesting

results which reveal for example, that adding gateways is not always beneficial.

Finding lower bounds of localization with noisy measurements using genetic algorithms2011In: Proceedings of the first ACM international symposium on Design and analysis of intelligent vehicular networks and applications (DIVANet '11), Miami, Florida, USA: Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), 2011, p. 47-54Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs) are wireless networks with mobile nodes (vehicles) which connect in an ad-hoc manner. Many vehicles use the Global Positioning System (GPS) to provide their locations. However the inaccuracy of GPS devices leads to some vehicles incorrectly assuming they are located at different positions and sometimes on different roads. VANETs can be used to increase the accuracy of each vehicle's computed location by allowing vehicles to share information regarding the measured distances to neighbouring vehicles. This paper looks at finding how much improvement can be made given the erroneous measurements present in the system. An evolutionary algorithm is used to evolve instances of parameters used by the VLOCI2 algorithm, also presented in this paper, to find instances which minimises the inaccuracy in computed locations. Simulation results show a definite improvement in location accuracy and lower bounds on how much improvement is possible is inferred.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is from a reading- and writingdisabilities perspective to find out how well the remedial pedagogy works in school. The study will also find out if there exist a school “for all” when it comes to people with reading- and writingdisabilities situation. The purpose is also to find out how well prepared the school is to handle those pupils. The study has accomplished by qualitative interviews. The respondents are remedial teachers/ remedial pedagogies. The respondents represent three different municipalities that work for the school or an organization with an overall responsibility for several schools. The study goes to that the school is prepared to handle students with reading and writing disabilities. In those schools that are subject for the study has everyone a plan for taking care of students with reading-and writingdisabilities. How we work with this pupil depends of the economic resources in the school. The remedial pedagogy has changed in our schools. It is both tutorial and individual education as called “one to one” education. The remedial teacher and the remedial pedagogy do not always agree, some of them want both individual education and supervision while other prefers to use supervision. The most need for this pupil is to have a “one to one” class. Today the circumstances are important for the education and the student’s needs. The focus is on the student’s assumption. Three of four pedagogies consists that there is “a school for all”, because every single student with be taken care of individually. Keywords: dyslexia, a school for all, reading and writing disabilities and remedial pedagogy

Planning a digital transformation for a company with a process layout: A study conducted at voestalpine Precision Strip AB2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Digitalization is an upcoming trend that divides the manufacturing industry of today. As an increasing number of companies chose to implement digitalization as a business strategy, some companies still struggle with implementing digitalization into their businesses.

Previous research has developed digital transformation models, but has been admitted as too generic. This thesis used the most comprehensive transformation model as base and aimed to make it practically implementable for a manufacturing company with a process layout. To enable this, a case study was conducted on a steel-processing company with this layout design. This thesis had an inductive approach, where primary data were collected from one selected company through a pilot study and semi structured interviews, and secondary data were collected through a literature review.

During the study, it was discovered that a company can benefit from using a customized guidance of how to implement digitalization, to optimally use digital opportunities. This thesis contributed with additional steps and extensions of the previous transformation model. The contribution consisted of the involvement of competency, creation of definition, identified digitalization trends relating to a SWOT analysis, additional phenomenon to take into consideration when analyzing future scenarios, additional questions to consider when analyzing impacted areas, creation of a digital business strategy, a comparison of impacted areas with previous projects, additional identified actions to fill the gap between current state and goals, and five identified criteria’s on how to prioritize these actions. This study extends current research with details and depth regarding a digital transformation model, and hence make it more practical. For future research, a case study testing the potential of the transformation model on a similar company should be conducted, and thereby improve the model further.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to, from a gender perspectice, explore how the drum kit lessons in three music and culture schools are performed. To investigate this, three qualitative interviews and six participant video observations have been implemented. Previous studies show that music teachers expect a feminine and masculine style of their students, that it is difficult as a girl to position themselves in a way that challenges the local gender regime while it is difficult to be traditionally feminine - moderate and controlled – when playing instruments such as electric bass and drum kit. In the present studies results, drum teachers’ views on drum teaching are shown but also how they conduct their teaching, and how boy- and girl students are handled in teaching. It emerges that teachers largely adapt teaching to students’ personalities and individual circumstances and not to gender, but the drum teachers express certain prejudices which may indicate that they expect to see a feminine and masculine style of their students. There is a discussion about the problems of instruments and professions being gender-coded, which can affect students’ learning conditions, and teacher prejudices and that teachers have to adapt to the students and not vice versa.

Konkurrentanalys för Värmlands Fastighetsservice KB - ett företag i fastighetsförvaltningsbranschen2001Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
