    Abstract [en]

The purpose of my study is to investigate how teachers in grade three think about and work with reading strategies so that the student is able to achieve a good reading comprehension and how it differs between the teachers studied. To investigate this, qualitative methods have been applied that are semi-structured, in order to ask open questions and to ask supplementary questions to answer the research questions and objectives of the study. From the result of judging, my view is that teachers work on different reading comprehension strategies in widely varied degrees. The work on reading strategies is explained by common contexts and not only in the subject of Swedish but in several different subjects.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to study and compare how male and female are portrayed in four picture books from the 2010s and 1970s, with a focus on the parents. And see what weight the images have to create gender norms in the books. Research has shown that children are affected by the books' gender representation, which makes it interesting to look at whether gender norms are visible in today's picture books (the 2010 century) and how it looked just after focus had been put on gender representation in picture books (1970s). In addition, I believe that the parents are interesting characters to study because there have not been so many analysis regarding parents' gender representation.

By the method of literary analysis, based on Nikolajevas Bilderbokens pusselbitar certain conclusions could be drawn. Among other things, in the case of the four analyzed picture books, it was difficult to find equality in the relationship between the parents. In addition, at least one parent in each picture book tended to become stereotyped because that parent was more in the background than the other.

    Abstract [en]

The aim with this study is to find out more about how primary school teachers’ are aware of the connection between reading- and writing difficulties and negative self-perceptions and possible preventive actions. The empirical data in the study consists of three qualitative research interviews with active primary teachers.

The teachers that were interviewed seemed aware of the correlation between reading- and writing difficulties and pupil’s self-perceptions, although they did not always find it easy to detect the specific problems that these pupils have regarding reading and writing.

The strategies they used to prevent negative self-perceptions of pupils with reading- and writing difficulties correlated to a high degree with previous research. These strategies are honesty, encouragement, to focus on success and advocate that everyone is different when it comes to learning. Other effective strategies that focus on teaching are to teach phonological awareness, the alphabet, learning strategies, vocabulary and writing. Repeated reading, intensive training, and one-on-one-teaching are also effective strategies for helping these pupils.

Gymnasieelevers användning av positionsverb: En jämförande studie av elever som läser svenska respektive svenska som andraspråk2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the use of posture verbs among students in upper secondary education. Posture verbs are difficult to differentiate between and have a wide semantic range. The aim of this study is to examine how often students studying Swedish as a second language (SSL) in upper secondary education use posture verbs in the production of texts in comparison to students studying Swedish. The research material for this study is comprised of two parts. The first part consists of 68 student texts, taken from the Swedish National Test 2015 in the courses of Swedish 1 and SSL 1. The second part consists of a questionnaire which requires an active choice of a posture verb by the participant. The study reveals that native speakers of Swedish use posture verbs twice as often as SSL-learners when writing. The study also reveals a small difference between the student groups concerning their use of posture verbs as opposed to copula sentences. This signifies an uncertainty surrounding the context in which these verbs are used.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines, with an explorative approach, how an analysis of students different reference strategies can be used to assess their discoursive- and critical competence regarding academic writing. 18 academic essays written by pupils of an upper secondary school in a medium-sized city in central Sweden are studied throught both a quantitative- and a qualitative content analysis. The tool for this study is Nilsson ́s (2002) categories of reference strategies; the copier, the sampler, the re-creator, the referent and the reporter. The result shows that the sampler is the most frequent used reference strategy and that an analysis of which reference strategies the writer uses can not alone work as a tool of assessment, but is a good tool to support the analysis and assessment of the student ́s discoursive- and critical competence.

    Abstract [en]

The subject of this study is reading comprehension of students in middle school. This will be discussed from multitude perspectives and focusing on what kind of methods a teacher uses (e.g. reading strategies, book discussions). The study will use the didactic perspective and examine what, how and why teachers use different methods in their teaching to pupils. I will also reflect whether there is any focus on some of the methods in a specific grade in middle school. The study therefore aims to investigate how teachers can describe their work with reading comprehension. The purpose of the study was analysed with qualitative methods based on interviews of four teachers in grade four to six. The result showed that the earlier described methods were not used as assumed initially, but the teachers have found their own ways of using parts from the various reading comprehension methods (e.g. RT, CORI). The result in this study showed that these four teachers used reading comprehension strategies and a lot of group work, but not the entire methods.

SoundCloud Rap: Signifiers, klass och en genre i förändring2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay has been to conduct a nuanced and comprehensible analysis of the SoundCloud rap genre, consisting of two parts: a comparative analysis and a class analysis. With the comparative analysis the essay has illustrated the differences in rap lyrics between the contemporary SoundCloud rappers Yung Lean and Lil Pump with the lyrics in 1990’s rap songs by Nas and The Notorious B.I.G. This analysis has in part been conducted with the help of the concept of signifiers to understand what the content of the lyrics communicates to the listener. The class analysis has then placed these changes into a economical and societal perspective. In this way, the essay not only highlights what changes have occurred, but also why they have done so.

In the analysis it is shown that signifiers are still used but that their content and area of usage has changed. This is, in part, ascribed to the globalization of hiphop and rap as a phenomenon during the 1990’s and 2000’s, but also because of changes in culture and the economy during these years. This has, as the analysis shows, resulted in that the lyrical content of rap has gained a larger focus on uncompromising excess without context.

We Need to Talk About Nick: Sexual Divergence, Characterization and the Hardcover Closet in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Criticism of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s, The Great Gatsby (1925) is often focused around its already evident focal points, such as its critique of capitalism, excess and greed. Therefore, this essay focuses on and discusses instances in The Great Gatsby of sexual divergence and homoeroticism. It is written with the purpose of giving the novel an alternative reading and perspective, coupled with expressing the need to look beyond a surface-level analysis of the novel. This is primarily accomplished by analyzing and highlighting the novel's narrator and central character, Nick Carraway. While this kind of reading is not as common as other readings of The Great Gatsby, it is however not original. By using other queer readings and criticisms I have found that Nick Carraway’s repressed and hidden sexual ambiguity is exposed in, as well as informed by, his homosocial interactions, his move to New York and his relationships throughout the novel, especially his relationship to Jay Gatsby. What this essay does, that many other queer readings neglect, is expressing the need to not label the characters with binary forms of sexuality, even though such forms are implied. This essay also highlights how Fitzgerald’s language sometimes suggests sexual divergence and discusses the importance of exploring these instances.

Att gestalta främlingskap: En studie av hur alienationen gestaltas i Eugene Ionescos Enstöringen2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

This essay is a study of the portrayal of the theme of alienation in Eugene Ionesco's novel The hermit. In my study I examine the different ways in which the theme of alienation is portrayed and how the cause of the narrator's experience of alienation can be found in ideological, psychological and existential conflicts that the narrator has to face. The result is an experience of das unheimliche, a Freudian concept, which is a kind of uncanny detachment that the narrator experiences, when he is put up against an invisible force that lurks in the perifery of the world, which is portrayed in the story. The meaning of the ideological conflict is a portrayal of man's situation in a world that is ruled by capitalism, with marxism as a positive leveler and the meaning of the psychological conflict is a conflict in the narrator's own inner reality. The meaning of the existential conflict is a portrayal of man's situation in a world absent of God. The novel by Ionesco points at these conflicts and also offers a solution to the limitations, that are caused by alienation by transcending them. In my study I focus on the function of language, biblical imagery, allegory and the theories that are being used to define the ideological (marxist theory) and existential (Albert Camus' theory of the absurd) conflicts. In my analysis I have also used Camus' The stranger in comparison with Ionesco's novel.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate if teachers use fiction to promote students’ empathy- and identity development. Furthermore, it investigates how much time is spent reading and to what extent teachers let their students discuss their reading experience. To answer the study’s research questions a quantitative questionnaire was used to collect data. The questionnaire was based on preconstructed questions with standardized answers. The results show that the teachers in the study often read aloud to their students and they frequently use fiction in their teaching. Discussions connected to the reading is not as common, especially after reading aloud. This corresponds well to previous research.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine how teachers define the concept of inclusion and how they embody it in their Swedish teaching with reference to students in reading and writing difficulties. The method that is the basis for the study is qualitative, semi-structured interviews with five teachers.

The results of the study shows a unity among the teachers about how they perceive theconcept of inclusion as community-oriented. The teachers’ working methods also coincides where all of them put a great focus on adapting the educationfor all pupils, both in terms of full class and individual tasks. Although the teachers have a positive attitude towards inclusive education, they mean that a completed inclusion is not always preferable to the pupils’ prerequisites and needs. The result thus reflect a certain dilemma about inclusive education among the teachers.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to examine how gender and equality is represented in children's books and how educators from a didactic perspective can work with children's literature as part of their work with value-based issues. The books used for this paper is Alfons och Milla (1985) written by Gunilla Bergström and Kalle med klänning (2008) written by Anette

Skåhlberg. These books were written during different decades and both the gender and ecuality aspect is presented differently. This might be explained by the values and what was normal during the times that they were written. Kalle med klänning (2008) is challenging the normal thoughts about gender. The book Alfons och Milla (1985) presents that boys and girls are different in the sense that they do and act differently. After analyzing both these books the conclusion is that Kalle med klänning (2008) is more suitable from a didactical perspective although Alfons och Milla (1985) can also be used in a didactic purpose. Both books gives us a good ground to discuss what is typically male and what is typically female although they illustrate gender differently. Methods to enlight these questions may be to read out loud and/or have a discussion about the books to get a deeper understanding regarding gender, equality and common principles.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to capture some teachers' experiences on multilingualism of newly arrived students studying Swedish as a second language in the introduction of a upper secondary school. My focus is to put forward a discussion on multilingualism and how teachers collaborate with tutors and plan their teaching.

I have chosen to do a qualitative study where I interviewed five teachers who have different experiences and educations. The survey was conducted by interviewing five teachers, four teachers teaching in Swedish as a second language and a mother tongue teacher who teach in Arabic.

The result shows that the interviewed teachers have quite similar perceptions about the perception of multilingualism in newly arrived students. Teachers collaborate and plan instruction to support language development in bilingual students. The teachers believe that multilingualism and mother tongue are resources for students' learning and development.

Teachers also report that they adjust teaching based on students' conditions and needs. They arrange trips and excursions to stimulate students' integration into society. However, there have been some difficulties in teaching, for example, to adapt their teaching to students' different levels. The conclusion is that teachers collaborate with each other in groups of teachers and support students to learn Swedish.

Den tibetanska argumentationstekniken – en alternativ retorik2018In: Kapet (elektronisk), E-ISSN 2002-3979, Vol. 1, p. 7-19Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study presents, among other things, which working methods apply to digital tools in Swedish teaching that are most prevalent, what teachers think of that the curriculum was revised and if teachers in today's school have the digital skills needed to integrate digital tools into teaching. In addition, it is reported what advantages and disadvantages there are with using digital tools at the primary school.

In order to collect data for my study, I used qualitative interviews where five teachers were interviewed.

With the help of the socio-cultural perspective and the pragmatism's approach to learning, my results were analyzed. Results show that the teachers had a positive attitude towards digital tools and all felt that it was necessary to integrate digital tools already at the primary school. It can also be seen from the result that all teachers were in favor of the curriculum being revised and the teachers considered that they had the necessary digital skills. The positive effects that emerged from my results were, among other things, that the students get the habit of using digital tools and that they learn to handle the various tools. The negative effects that emerged from my result were mainly that it takes a long time to use the digital tools.

I will examine how this creates a conflict within the characters and how that conflict leads to suffering and marginalization. The characters in Mrs. Dalloway have different ways of dealing with the tension between society’s expectations and their own desire for self-expression, and in my essay I suggest that this conflict constitutes the central tension of the novel, forcing the characters to find different kinds of solutions. Clarissa, Septimus and Peter are all affected by the conflict between society’s expectations and self-expression, but they find different solutions. Septimus refuses to conform to society’s expectations through ending his life, Clarissa’s solution is to conform to society’s expectations even though she desires to express her true self, and Peter’s solution is to embrace his individuality and express his true self in spite of all the negative consequences this has on his social status.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to research Swedish primary school teachers' experiences and attitudes towards the English language in general as well as the school subject. To answer the research purpose, four research questions were constructed: What is the teachers’ view on the English language? What is the best way to learn English according to the teachers? How do the teachers think that the teaching in English should look like? Do the teachers feel that they are affected by their own attitude towards English? To answer the study's research questions, a qualitative research method was used in the form of interviews. The sample consisted of six Swedish primary school teachers from the mid-Sweden. All teachers were qualified primary school teachers and all taught in the subject English. All interviews were recorded, transcribed and coded. To analyze the result, theories and research on linguistic insecurity, self-efficacy and social learning were used. The result showed that teachers felt that English was very important and teaching on the subject should be based on communication. Furthermore, the teachers presented a subjective picture of English where they examined their previous experiences, relationships and knowledge in English. The study may be of interest to the Swedish school system as the study provides insight into the Swedish primary school teachers' feelings and experiences.

    Abstract [en]

This is a qualitative study with the purpose of examining teachers’ perceptions of reading difficulties in elementary school. Furthermore, the purpose is to examine how teachers support their students based on their needs, as well as what different approaches they use to detect reading difficulties. To examine this, qualitative interviews have been performed with seven active teachers, one of them being active in elementary school. The result that emerged from the study is that there are many factors that affect students with reading difficulties. It can depend on the students not having a phonological awareness, lack of decent word decoding and/or lack of intrinsic or extrinsic motivations. Additionally, it can depend on a diagnosis, such as dyslexia, being involved. An important factor that is brought up in the study is that problems with students’ reading never look the same. Everyone’s needs are different, and it is the teachers’ duty to find a solution and support the students in their continued process of learning. Finally, another factor that has emerged through this study is the fact that a student’s reading difficulties should never come as a surprise as it ought to be the teachers aim to discover reading difficulties as early as possible.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to investigate how genre pedagogy is construed, evaluated and translated into practice according to handbooks for teachers, as well as according to professional teachers and whether there is a coherence between the application and evaluation of both parties. Genre pedagogy is a method that aims at developing students’ reading and writing skills and is therefore interesting when fresh surveys from e.g. PIRLS and PISA show that the reading ability of Swedish middle school students is dropping.

I have chosen to use two qualitative methods: interview and a literature study. I have interviewed three teachers from schools in central Sweden. In the results section, I present my empirical study into two main themes and associated thematic subheadings.

The results suggest that what the literature presents is well in line with how the teachers apply genre pedagogy in practice. All teachers considered that it’s very important to support their students in the language and knowledge-based teaching. A negative aspect of the circle model is that the teaching can get tedious, especially for those students who find it easy to write. In sum, the results suggest that genre pedagogy is a flexible set of methods for meeting some of the challenges facing language teaching today, and one that teachers find easy to translate from theory to practice.

Good and Evil in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone are two novels that are quite different but both contain strong elements of good and evil. In this essay I will look at a collection of characters from each novel and chart their affinities towards either good or evil. By doing so I will also look at the differences and similarities in how good and evil is presented in the novels. Thus, I will show the different types of good and different ways of evil that are present, as well as compare the ways they are presented. My argument is that good and evil form a simpler dichotomy in Lion, where they are presented in a more black and white manner, while the two concepts are described in a more complex way in Philosopher's Stone as matters there are more shaded.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this qualitative litterary study is to analyse death as a motif in two children’s books. Scientistic researches aim to show how children handle and understand death in different ages and which consequences this imposes for the adults around the children. Furthermore, the study will show how fictional children’s books can become a tool for guardians and the school who meet children in grief. The books that will be analysed are Astrid Lindgren’s The Brothers Lionheart, which was published in 1973 and Cecilia Davidsson’s Lill-Pär och jag, which was published in 2013. The main focus lies on how the main characters in the books handle their grief and how the authors describe death as a motif. To analyse that motif, the study will focus on language style, choice of words and symbols in the text. Whether the books are useful for communication between teachers and children who grief is analysed in this study.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine the multimodal teaching aids used for second language students´ reading skills development, and whether their compositions and use of pictures could be considered favorable.

The study was conducted by using a qualitative content analysis. Two text analyses were applied; an analysis of the correlation between the text and the adjacent pictures, and then a multimodal text analysis. With these it was possible to examine the relationships and composition of the different elements and whether a relationship is being built with the reader which offers interaction and commitment.

The results show that several pictures in the teaching aids lack specific connections to the texts, and it could be problematic for second language students to see the connection that exists. The number of pictures could also be confusing and obstructive if the reader focuses too much on the pictures instead of the text, or that they are interpreted in a way that is not equal to the text. The teaching aids did however prove to be favorable, in different ways and on different skill levels.

Home and away – Implications of short-term sojourning of young Australian bilinguals2019In: Lingua, ISSN 0024-3841, E-ISSN 1872-6135Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study investigates the transnational experiences of young Taiwanese-background children living in Australia, who sojourn to their parents’ homeland during the school holidays to improve their linguistic and cultural skills, as reported by their mothers. Although this appears to be a frequent practice in the Taiwanese diaspora, showcasing the agency of this community, little research has systematically investigated this practice, and in particular its impact on the children and their families. Data for this study were obtained through online questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with mothers who engage in this practice, to gather information on family histories and participants’ backgrounds, family language policies, and parents’ perceptions of children's experiences and challenges. The data show that parents aim to enhance their children's proficiency levels in the home language as well as their Taiwanese identity. Children, however, take an agentive role with regard to identity choices, so parents’ aims are not always fulfilled. Sojourning is presented as a clear example not only of enacted family language policy, but also as an explicit management practice, positioning the Taiwanese diaspora within both their new as well as their old homeland.

Naturen iklädd Kultur: En studie av naturen som litterärt tema i fyra diktsamlingar av Lotta Lotass2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to examine nature as a literary theme in four collections of poetry by the Swedish author Lotta Lotass in an attempt to understand what deeper meaning and significance nature brings to the poems. The four works are Redwood, Hemvist, Kraftverk and Nya dikter. I have chosen two poems from each work which menas I focus primarily at eight selected poems. A comparison between these poems is also made in an attempt to both widen and deepen the analysis. This means my study is based on what kind of message or meaning nature as a theme has within these poems. Furthermore I have chosen ecocriticism as my theoretical tool. This perspective is used in my analysis as a way to explore the two concepts of nature and culture and to take a closer look at what meaning they bring to both nature as a literary theme and to the interpretation of the poems content. I argue that the anthropocentric perspective is visible in Lotass poems as a way of questioning the relationship between these two concepts and to show their arbitrary basis. I also suggest that both the terms human, culture and nature and the limits that surround them are being explored and investigated in the poems by Lotass in an ambiguously and multi-layered way. There is no clear definition of neither of these terms and that's what makes them so intriguing and adds a special underlying nerve to the poems and their meaning.

    Abstract [en]

The study has two purposes: to investigate the relation between second language learning as an adult and the students' identity, and to analyse if the persons who work at SFI (Swedish for immigrants), who has arrived to Sweden as adults, work to support the students' identity as they learn the languages, or if they treat the students in a way that support their creation of a new/changed identity. To investigate this, has semi-structural interviews been used and they have been analysed with a method called “fenomenografi”. The eight persons who have been interviewed have all come to Sweden as adults and they work with different professions at SFI, in a middle-sized town in Sweden. In the interviews you could see that all the informants changed their identities when they had just arrived to Sweden. The study shows that the hardest point in the language learning was to learn to use the shades of meaning and how to express feelings and opinions in the new language. The informants told that they connected their own historical background with the students' stories and treated them in a way that supported the students' identities. At SFI you need to work with the use of different shades of meaning and go to the bottom with the language. You must also work with how to know where in different contexts you should use different styles in languages and work with both language and culture at the same time. It would work as a support to the identities to reflect on how to get into and participate in the society. Everyone who gets to meet persons who have recently arrived needs to leave the difficulties with the language out of account and instead see the individuals behind the words.

Pictures as an aesthetical tool in English language teaching: An experimental study2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This explorative qualitative case study aims at finding out about the impact of pictures as an aesthetical tool in English language teaching, through an experiment in the English classroom. Aesthetical tools are here defined as tools through which one can reach a stronger experience and improve learning. The independent variable in the experiment was a picture assignment and the dependent variable was a Chinese high school class and their teacher in English. After having done the experiment, the research questions were answered through a student questionnaire and an interview with the teacher. The study is based on Dewey’s theory of an experience (Dewey 1934) which is about the benefits of aesthetical experiences, and six themes of aesthetical experience provided by Uhrmacher (2009) meant to make education into such an experience. A majority of the subjects responded positively to the experiment, and the assignment seemed to be able to implement Uhrmacher’s six themes, at least to a certain extent. The claims of earlier findings are also echoed in this study.

Likvärdig utbildning för flerspråkiga elever - lättare sagt än gjort!: En studie om flerspråkiga elevers rätt till fullgod utbildning2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

“Ooooh, so strong”: Ironic Responses to Donald Trump’s Presidential Tweets2017Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

After Donald Trump won the presidency, his use of social media has gotten massive attention because of its incredibly inappropriate content. Many people question how appropriate his use of Twitter is, and in the linguistic field prominent voices point out that the former businessman does not have the skills to speak; he only talks (McWhorter, 2017). As America’s President with views of his own about worldly events, it is of special interest to see how people interact with him online. Because of the low 39% approval rating, one can assume that many disagree with him, possibly in a way involving irony. One sub-type of irony is described as “the use of words to express something other than and especially the opposite of the literal meaning” (Merriam-Webster, 2018), and it is reasonable to assume that some responses to Trump’s tweets use irony to present an alternative view of his actions or opinions. The study sets out to find replies to Trump’s tweets that are ironic and identify if they correspond to earlier developed theories of irony. The replies are examined to determine which of Grice’s maxims of conversation that is flouted the most. The data included 337 replies of which 78 (23%) were shown to follow an ironical pattern, mostly in order to ridicule and condemn Trump. 88 % of all comments disagree with Trump’s tweets. The most applicable theory of irony is the echoic interpretation theory by Wilson and Sperber, and the most flouted maxim is relevance.

    Abstract [en]

The present study investigates how some gerunds in the novel The Way to Paradise by Mario Vargas Llosa is translated to Swedish by the translator Peter Landelius. The analysis shows that different strategies are used, such as the past tense, the construction “and” + the past tense, prepositions, omission of the verb or subordinate relative clauses. In very few cases, 6 %, the gerund is kept in the translation. The analysis confirms the hypothesis, when the gerund in the Spanish text is replaced by other grammatical constructions in Swedish, some semantic and stylistic nuances configured in Vargas Llosa’s novel are lost or modified in the Swedish translation.

The survey is based on qualitative research interviews with four active teachers from primary school. The purpose of the study is to gain knowledge of how to work with reading and writing learning in year one. The study is based on four issues that concern the teachers' views on the early work on reading and writing. The result shows that teachers have slightly shared perceptions of specific educational material, but the foundation is to have a varied reading and writing teaching. The teaching should also be fun and stimulate the students' individual needs.

Does playing video games have an effect on English vocabulary acquisition?: The correlation between English vocabulary acquisition and the playing of video games in ninth grade learners of English in Sweden2019Student paper other, 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

There have been many different studies done around the subject of Extramural English, where researchers Sundqvist and Sylvén (2012) have drawn the conclusion that there is a correlation between video games and learners of English improving upon their English vocabulary. This study focuses time spent on whether or not playing video games for an extended amount of time will help with a student’s English vocabulary. This was done by having the students answer a demographic questionnaire in which they answer whether or not they regularly play video games, and answers approximately how many hours a week they do play. The study is looking for a correlation between improved vocabulary scores and longer periods of time spent playing video games every week.

The study also looks into specific vocabulary that is commonly found in video games and compares different groups which have spent different amounts of time each week playing video games. Do video games help a learner’s English vocabulary and if so, does an increased amount of time spent on playing video games correlate to a higher score on the vocabulary tests, and do students who plays video games have an easier time with some of the specific vocabulary? The study found that there is indeed a correlation and that if a student spends time playing video games their English vocabulary proficiency will most likely increase as well. A student who spends more than ten hours a week on playing video games had higher average scores than those who played less than ten hours a week. Incidentally the students who did not play video games at all had the lowest average scores in the vocabulary tests. Lastly students who spent time playing video games had an easier time answering the questions relating to words that are commonly used in video games.

Using the F-measure to test formality in sports reporting: A comparison of the language used in soccer and horse polo articles in two British newspapers2017Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates the formality level of the language used in twenty articles from two sports that seem to cater to different social classes (soccer and horse polo). The articles that serve as the data were published in two different types of British newspapers, one broadsheet (The Daily Telegraph) and one tabloid (The Daily Express) from September 2010 through November 2017. The study uses a quantitative method by means of the F-measure, and a qualitative analysis of two articles whose results deviate from the rest. The quantitative results show that there is a difference in formality in sports articles on the two sports soccer and horse polo, where articles on polo score higher on the F-measure in both newspapers. Most articles on horse polo follow the pattern of the informational production with features like a high ratio of nouns, pronouns, long words, and adjectives often found in academic papers and legal documents etc. Articles on soccer follow the involved production, characterized by a high ratio of verbs, adverbs, pronouns, and WH-questions often found in spoken interaction. The qualitative analysis shows that the article on soccer which has a much higher F-score than the rest is an informative article on the price of season tickets, and that the polo article with a very low Fscore contained a lot of quoted speech.

Språkhistorisk medvetenhet och dess möjligheter i svenskämnet: En dokumentstudie om hur språkhistoria förmedlas i tre samtida läroböcker för kursen svenska 3 på gymnasiet.2019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay have been written with hope in contributing with knowledge about what students are expected and what they can absorb through the teaching of the Swedish language history. The study has been done through a document study of three modern textbooks for the Swedish course 3 intended for high school. The purpose of the study has been to investigate the extent to which textbooks enable language-historical awareness. To answer this, the main focus has been on finding out how well the textbooks apply the concept and how they justify the usefulness in language history.

The theoretical approach is based on Jonathan Pettersson's thoughts of that the teaching of language history can contribute to the students developing a language-historical awareness. This means that the student can put the language history in relation to current issues in his or her contemporary and future, in order to build up an approach to themselves and their surroundings as language creatures.

The study has shown that the textbooks succeed in applying the concept of language-historical consciousness to a great extent, by achieving different conditions for developing a language-historical consciousness. What is useful in the language-historical subject on the other hand is not something that is clearly justified in the textbooks, which confirms the earlier research's thoughts that there are uncertainties within this question. The lack of justification also reflects the current curricula of Swedish that only states that they should develop knowledge in the origin of the Swedish language. To sum up, the study therefore indicates that the textbooks enable the development of language-historical awareness. In a larger perspective, the study therefore suggests that there are good opportunities for the concept of language-historical awareness to be included in the Swedish history language, but that it is still necessary for major research to start to take an interest in the issue in order to shed more light on the research problem. This is also necessary in order to enable a possible change in the curricula in the future.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate what attitudes teachers have to digital teaching materials compared with traditional textbooks and how they believe that digital teaching materials affect pupils’ learning, motivation and low-performing students. In my survey, I have used semi-structured interviews, and the interviewed teachers worked in three different schools so that the results got a bigger spread. The results show that all teachers except one were positive to digital learning tools and their impact on students learning, motivation and low-performing students. They felt that they could tailor the education more individually, and could also vary the teaching more with the digital learning tools. The disadvantages of the digital teaching materials were if the digital tools did not work to 100% and that some teachers wanted to develop their competency and confidence in using the digital tools. All teachers except one think that both traditional textbooks and digital teaching materials in teaching are necessary to get the ultimate results. The teacher who does not think the digital teaching materials add something positive to teaching, instead, thinks that the traditional textbook is the best option for all students regarding students learning, motivation and low- performing students.

"Dom flästa lärare behöver lära sig mer om datorer": En studie om lärares och elevers attityder till datoranvändning i svenskundervisningen2013Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Mind vs. Body and Society: Androgynous Self-Perception and Social Preconceptions of Gender in Virginia Woolf’s Orlando2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay argues that Virginia Woolf’s Orlando (1928) suggests that self-perception is not tied to sex and gender because of the difference in the protagonist’s perceptions of his/her gender and sex and the society’s perceptions of the protagonist’s gender and sex. In the essay, a distinction between the mind and the body of the protagonist is used to stress the difference between his/her self-perception and his/her biological sex. Furthermore, gender as a social construction is used as a third part in discussing self-perception, sex and identity. The essay discusses how Orlando does not change as a person even though the body and sex do, and how s/he has to conform to society’s gender norms in various ways. Finally, the essay shows how Orlando is not an exception since other characters’ gendered behavior is determined by society’s preconceptions as well. The essay concludes that society’s gender norms oppress people who live or want to live outside these norms.
