Future of a Fusing Europe2008Rapport (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

After providing a thematic survey of the challenges confronting the European Union today, Lee Miles calls upon EU scholars to ‘think bigger’ about the future of the European Union. He argues that fusion approaches offer considerable conceptual strengths, and the potential to develop theory-informed scenarios, that can aid our understanding of the future evolution of the Union. Through an evaluation of the 2007 Reform Treaty, the author also concludes that the EU will further evolve as a ‘Fusing Europe’ and that EU external relations policy will be an area of notable future development.

    Abstract

This chapter, published in a volume celebrating the retirement of Rutger Lindahl, Professor of Political Science at Göteborg University, examines the continuing relevance of the work of Lindahl and Naurin published in 2005 in explaining the twin faces of Swedish government policy towards issues of European integration today in 2011. Miles argues that the concept of 'twin faces' still has resonance for explaining Swedish perspectives towards the European Union, and even the euro, during the period of non-socialist Alliance government in Sweden.

Making Mischief With Swedish Models: Reflections on Contemporary Swedish Politics2010Ingår i: Scandinavica: An International Journal of Scandinavian Studies, ISSN 0036-5653, Vol. 49, nr 1, s. 65-84Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article, is based upon, and was first delivered as the Inaugural Professorial Lecture of Lee Miles in association with his inauguration as Professor of Political Science at Karlstad University (17th September 2009). The article attempts to discuss four aspects. First, the author argues that there is today a serious disparity between the practical realities of contemporary Swedish politics and the continued discussions among the country's political elites, as well as between scholars, on the resonance of Sweden as a 'model society' with a distinctive 'Swedish model'. Second, he then explores three themes that explain the path dependency of the traditional social-democratic inspired paradigm of a Swedish model, and its increasingly changing nature, with a particular emphasis on the long term trends affecting Sweden since the 1990s. Third, Lee Miles argues that the period since the victory of the non-socialist Alliance bloc in 2006 may represent the beginning of a critical juncture in Swedish politics and new attempts to re-engineer not just the political ground but also the political narratives underpinning any (future) Swedish model. Fourth, and in this context, Lee Miles envisages that the 2010 General Election has the potential to become another important watershed in Swedish contemporary politics

National Political Elites and the Lisbon Treaty: Altered and/or Unaltered Expectations: A Preliminary Evaluation of British National Policy-makers Using a Micro-Fusion Framework2010Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract

This paper, published on-line as a EU-PO-LIS Working Paper, introduces a Micro-Fusion Framework (MFF) in order to understand how national political elites perceive the development of the European Union in the context of the 2007 Lisbon Treaty. This hybrid paper also presents new empirical findings in the case of the British national elite perspectives towards the specific case of the negotiations, formulation and ratification of the Lisbon Treaty. The preliminary results of this investigation suggest that specific attention upon the degree and forms of national awareness, action, adaptation and attitudes among national elites and institutions offers academic value-added towards the understanding of the future developments of a post-Lisbon EU

    Abstract

This chapter - focusing upon the five Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden - evaluates and compares their attitudes and responses to the continuing challenges of an evolving and increasingly differentiated European Union. The central argument is that although the Nordic countries are often seen as a homogeneous group of nations with similar perspectives towards questions of European integration, the reality is that the Nordic region has not been immune from the pressures of differentiated integration, and the policies of the respective countries can be notably different. The book chapter is published in a new works edited by Kenneth Dyson and Angelos Sepos and published in the highly prestigious Palgrave Studies in European Union Politics book series

    Abstract

This chapter, reflects upon the role of political outsiders from the perspective of a political scientist with an expertise in Swedish politics, and engages the contributions of fellow historians in the book. Two main lines of argumentation are followed. First, that historical perspectives can further understandings of the cross-class appeal of the Social Democrats in Sweden, and the development of non-violent political methods. Second, that historical interpretations might, by focusing on outsiders, help others understand the current changes in Swedish contemporary politics since outsiders become visible when cracks in the political culture appear

    Abstract [en]

The author considers the implications arising from the difficulties associated with the ratification of the 2004 Constitutional Treaty. Miles argues that, although the French and Dutch rejections of the Treaty in 2005 may represent a voice of caution on the merits of a 'constitutional Europe', the concept of a 'fusing Europe' provides a useful way to explain the present trajectory of European Integration. Furthermore, the demands of third countries and international actors - that of a 'confusing world' - will continue to offer persuasive rationales for further fusion in the European Union as well as the advancement of EU external relations policy
