The Blake Syndrome: The Case of “Jerusalem"2013In: Literature film quarterly, ISSN 0090-4260, Vol. 41, no 4, p. 254-265Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

An essay is presented which examines the use of William Blake's poem "And did those feet" ("Jerusalem"), in various contexts. The author explores the process by which Blake's poem has become a symbol of a class-based and militaristic system. According to the author, even as Blake became the Romantic writer who was the most influential in the 20th century, editors and scholars were slow to emphasize the political dimensions of Blake's art.

“To ‘maister the Circumstance’: Mulcaster’s Positions and Spenser’s Faerie Queene.”2020In: Spenser Studies: A Renaissance Poetry Annual, ISSN 0195-9468, Vol. 34, p. 1-24Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This essay argues that the prominent Elizabethan pedagogue Richard Mulcaster exerted a considerable influence on the narrative strategies of his pupil Edmund Spenser, especially as seen in Book I of The Faerie Queene. Where recent scholars such as Jeff Dolven and Andrew Wallace have maintained that Spenser was critical of many of the humanist practices they deem prevalent in the Elizabethan classroom, this study shows that such critique of humanism was already a basic part of the reformed curriculum at Merchant Taylors’ School, where Spenser received his early training under Mulcaster. The essay first provides a reading of Mulcaster’s main pedagogical text, Positions (1581), and then applies its key concepts to a reading of Book I of Spenser’s poem with a double emphasis on the hero of the poem, Redcrosse, and on the reader’s interaction with the text. The most important of these concepts is the seemingly innocuous term “circumstance.” Aside from being a key concept within forensic oratory, to “maister the circumstance” is for Mulcaster a shorthand for a cautious approach to the classical text studied in his classroom. The same strategy, this essay argues, is implemented in the poem. The reader must pay attention to the circumstances, with their rhetorical, pedagogical, and theological connotations, triggered in large part by the apparent inability of Redcrosse, the putative hero of the book, to do so. Additionally, as a subcategory of the rhetorical connotations, there is also the need to assess the use of names in the poem.

Semantic patterns in the description of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump: A semantic analysis of adjectives in the editorials of two U.S. newspapers2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Politicians work hard on how they are perceived by their voters, but what they cannot control is how media portray them. In order to get some insight into how Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were described during the general election 2016, this study will analyse adjectives from a semantic perspective, which entails semantic classification, sentiment scores and an Appraisal analysis of adjectives found in editorials from The New York Times and The Washington Times. The purpose of this is to reveal if there are any semantic patterns as to how the adjectives were used to describe the candidates and if there is a relationship between these hypothetical patterns and the political affiliations of the newspapers. The findings of this study suggest that there are semantic patterns as to how the presidential candidates are described. Moreover, the results from the analysis of The New York Times seem to display a relationship between the adjectives and the political orientation of the newspaper whereas the results from The Washington Times are less clear, although there are some indications of such a connection.

Möten i dialektalt gränsland: Dialektala övergångar genom Närke : dialectal transitions across Närke2001Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The province of Närke comprises, together with Södermanland, a transition area characterised by a mixture of linguistic features from the Götaland dialects (götamål) and Central Swedish dialects (uppsvenska). One purpose of the study is to test and develop the dialectal transition theory established by J. K. Chambers and P. Trudgill. Another one is to determine the distribution patterns for a number of dialectal transitions in the above-mentioned contact area and to discover linguistic and non-linguistic reasons for them. The third purpose is to describe an aspect of the Närke dialect (närkemålet). The dissertation takes up six transitions covering four linguistic features: dropping of final t in endings, weakening of unstressed i and a and syncope of suffix vowels. From the survey it can be seen that all transitions take place gradually, although there are some exceptions. This means that the transitions are to be seen as dialectal continua. Occasionally the change of a transition, at least in part, is more or less abrupt. In one or two cases there are isogloss conditions. The fact that syncope of suffix vowels and dropped t are mutually exclusive favours retention of final t, as does the hiatus contraction. The vowel balance has some explanatory value for the weakening of unstressed i and a. However, the linguistic explanations should be supplemented with non-linguistic ones. The distribution patterns are compared with various topographical, demographic and ethnogeographical factors. The study shows that population density is of fundamental importance for dialectal distribution. This is reflected in the fact that, in one respect, central Närke is a fairly closely connected dialect-geographical unit. But since the area is a part of several transitional zones it can from another perspective be seen as the opposite.
