    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

Lysgaard's theory of the worker collectivity is still an influential classic in Scandinavian working-life research. The study was carried out in a pulp and paper mill in the late 1950s and we have returned to the plant to find out what has happened to the worker collectivity. Through observations at the workplace and interviews with workers, engineers and managers, as well as having access to data from the 1950s and 1980s, we are able to map the development of technology, work organization and the collectivity. On this basis, we suggest two changes to Lysgaard's theory. One is to conceptually split what Lysgaard called the technical/economic system into two relatively autonomous systems the technical and the economic, respectively. The other is to analyse the way in which the collectivity has infiltrated the technical, but not the economic system.

Collective mobilization in changing conditions: Worker collectivity in a turbulent age2019 (ed. 1)Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This book presents the first published account in English of Sverre Lysgaard's theory of the ‘worker collectivity’ – a theory of an informal protective organisation among subordinate employees, which so far has been unknown outside Scandinavia.

Lysgaard’s theory espouses that workers collectively form a buffer against management to protect themselves from the technical/economic power, which controls their working lives. The authors have returned to the same Norwegian factory Lysgaard studied in the 1950s to carry out ethnographic fieldwork in the 1980s and 2010s, and investigate the changing nature of the production, labour processes and management strategies. Through analysis that extends over 50 years of factory life, this research documents shifting power relations between workers and employers during times of changing institutional structures, globalisation, and worker solidarity. A revised version of the theory is also presented as an answer to some of the uncovered deficiencies in the original framework. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of the sociology of work, labour studies, business management and organisation studies.

Den digitala skolan: Fyra lärares uppfattningar kring programmering i de tidiga skolåren2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Recently non-monetary rewards have been receiving more and more attention which have led to an increase in the usage of them by multiple companies. The purpose of this paper is therefore to investigate how non-monetary rewards are perceived by the employees and consequently how it affects the motivation of the employees. Is the increase justified or is it only a trend passing by?

Prior research has identified that non-monetary rewards have a positive effect on the motivation of the employees. Why it has a positive effect is, however, uncertain and that is how our study will contribute to the field of study. The study was conducted through a series of qualitative semi-structured interviews on a single bank which basically only use non-monetary rewards. In order to be able to discuss the result of the case study, three theories have been used, decoupling theory, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and Herzberg’s two-factor theory. By using the decoupling theory, a discussion about decoupling between the different levels of hierarchy has been held. Both motivation theories used in the study have contributed with support to both the internal and external forces of motivation. Maslow and Herzberg both describe the importance of non-monetary rewards and how they only can be fully appreciated once the basic needs are fulfilled.

Monetary rewards were often mentioned in the beginning of the interviews as important first motivating factors but later in (in the interviews) the meaning of non-monetary rewards was emphasized. The study has also confirmed the appreciation of non-monetary rewards and especially developing opportunities within the company. A reason why these non-monetary rewards work in practice are because they can create a culture that indirectly motivate the employees. Based on the result of the study a conclusion can be made. By creating a good corporate culture that promote developing opportunities, benefits and by offering a Swedish cream bun on a special day, it results in a well-being which eventually leads to motivated and long-term committed employees.

Verktyg för automatiserad mjukvaruleverans: En analysmodell och en rekommendation2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

A holistic view of value generation process in a SSBI environment: A service dominant logic perspective2018In: Journal of Decision Systems, ISSN 1246-0125, E-ISSN 2116-7052, Vol. 27, no S1, p. 46-55Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Self-service business intelligence (SSBI) is an emerging trend in organisations allowing users to become more autonomous in data exploration. Organisations are keen to provide such services for their employees due to its potential benefits. However, there is little empirical knowledge about the process of building a SSBI service and the role of users in this process. From an exploratory single case study of a major Norwegian online marketplace and drawing on service-dominant logic as an analytical framework, we identify and explore two major phases of building a SSBI service: co-production and co-creation. Besides providing a rich description of these phases, this study also explores the way stakeholders are involved and embedded throughout the process of value generation.

Digital kompetens: En fallstudie av mellanstadieelevers användning av digitala verktyg och medier ur ett lärarperspektiv2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

A Semi-Automatic Approach for the Integration of Structural Karlstad Enterprise Modeling Schemata2014In: Advances in the human side of service engineering, USA: AHFE conference , 2014, p. 13-24Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we describe and discuss a semi-automatic approach for the integration of structural Karlstad Enterprise Modeling (EM) Schemata. The focus is on the implementation-independent level and therefore we treat an EM schema as a high-level description of data for some part of the future information system. Our point of departure is the classic four-phase integration process comprised of pre-integration, comparison of the schemata, conforming the schemata and, merging and restructuring. In relation to the semi-automatic approach described and discussed, we argue that several rules and knowledge repositories should be used to facilitate the whole integration process. However, it is also argued that the domain experts are still a very important source of knowledge and should therefore also be involved during the whole integration process. The research approach is inspired by design science in which the end product should be a useful artifact. In this paper, the artifact is provided in the described semi-automatic approach for the integration of Structural Karlstad EM schemata. As its main contribution, the paper offers a holistic view of the described and discussed semi-automatic approach for the integration of structural Karlstad EM schemata.

Schema Quality Improving Tasks in the Schema Integration Process2014In: International Journal on Advances in Intelligent Systems, ISSN 1942-2679, E-ISSN 1942-2679, Vol. 7, no 3&4, p. 468-481Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this article, we address quality in the schema integration process. More specifically, we focus on schema quality improving tasks in the schema integration process. In doing so we describe best practices found in literature used for conceptual modeling as such and apply these to schema integration tasks. Particularly, we address five tasks within the integration process that if used with best quality practices should improve the quality of the integrated schema. Within each best practice, we also address the usage of knowledge repositories to aid in the process of creating a high quality integrated schema. The five tasks are as follows: choosing the right integration strategy, choosing the right conflict resolution methods for the chosen level of abstraction, introducing interschema properties to improve and clarify dependencies, combining methods, approaches and guidelines to facilitate recognition of conflicts and finally restructuring. The main contribution is given in the terms of which best practices in conceptual modeling are combined with important integration tasks.

Elaborating requirements for a digital crisis training tool: Findings from a pilot study2019In: Proceedings of ISD2019, 2019Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Crisis preparedness is of great importance to many actors in society. Maintaining crisis preparedness is an arduous task that requires frequent exercises. However, many actors have trouble accomplishing this because planning and conducting exercises are time consuming and involve high costs. Digitalization of crisis training has been suggested as a way to partly overcome these obstacles. In this paper, we present the results of a pilot study on an exercise in a digital crisis training tool. Trainees were interviewed and a content analysis was performed on the data. The analytical categories consisted of requirements for a crisis training tool, developed in our previous work. The results of the analysis show that the pace of an exercise, the number of trainees and the number of asynchronous and synchronous modules are all related to boundaries of digital crisis training. These boundaries need to be further explored.

    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we present a pilot study of page owner comments on page user posts.Analysed data consist of the page user posts on three Swedish municipalities Facebook pages inone month. In general, it can be concluded that all three municipalities comment on page userposts to quite a large or even large extent (92%, 69% and 52%). The 42-page user posts thatwere left uncommented mainly belong to the categories of expressing an opinion, sharinginformation and requesting information. Taken together, these categories were identified in 76percent of the analysed page user posts. Because they are also the top three categories for userposts in general, further questions are prompted as to where municipalities satisfy requests forinformation or if other users provide answers.

Verkligt värde i balansräkningen: Förvaltningsfastigheter2006Licentiate thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Background: Derived from financial scandals the independence of the auditor has publicly been questioned and as a result the EU Commission regulated mandatory audit-firm rotation for public companies. Thus, the audit firm and client relationship has been limited. Hence, discussions within the accountancy profession as well as within the literature surrounding the possible effects the change in regulation might have on audit quality. Not only statements surrounding the auditors’ independence of mind and independence in appearance occur in these discussions but also the competence of the auditor as a dependent factor to audit quality. The paper will hereby consider quality aspects in fact as well as in appearance related to mandatory audit-firm rotation and its impact on audit quality.

Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to complement existing discussions within the scientific area concerning the effects mandatory audit-firm rotation have on audit quality. The purpose is met while a study on firm-level is conducted combining aspects in fact with aspects in appearance related to a limitation in the length of the firm-client relationship.

Method: A multiple logistic regression will be used to analyze data from annual reports and audit opinions against audit quality in fact. A survey has been designed, which intends to study external third parties’ perception of audit quality in appearance. The literature chapter will form the basis for definitions as well as analyzes.

Conclusions: Through an analysis of the papers result for both audit quality in fact and audit quality in appearance, a comprehensive conclusion of total audit quality can be made. In regard to audit quality in fact, our result show no significant effect between the length of the firm-client relationship and audit quality. Hence, neither the auditor’s independence nor competence are assumed to be substantially affected by the change in regulation. However, an indirect impact on the auditor’s independence in fact is discussed, which is why audit quality in fact might still be considered to be positively affected. Third parties perceive that the change in regulation positively affects audit quality in appearance despite the fact that the auditor is seemed to sacrifice competence in favour of improved independence in appearance. Thus, the total audit quality is expected to be improved by the mandatory audit-firm rotation.

Stressorer och copingstrategier hos projektledare i interna förändringsprojekt2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to scrutinize stressors and describe problem and emotional focused coping strategies among project managers in internal change projects within for-profit organisations.

Seen from the theoretical background in which projects of change are complex, demand priority of resources and above that often encounter resistance, five different areas of problems were identified within internal change projects. A qualitative method was used in which semi-structured interviews with six respondents were held at different for-profit organisations, which used a thematic analysis through coding.

The result of the study shows twelve stressors related to the identified areas of problems. Examples of stressors within the different areas of problems include managing resistance to change and a lack of communication. Problem focused coping strategies related to internal change projects are plan and prioritize, create limits and communicate. Emotional focused coping strategies are avoiding, active recovery and social support.

The study also shows that the stressors influence each other and in combination can influence the project in a different way. Moreover the coping strategies can be linked together with specific stressors. For example, the stressor time pressure and a heavy work-load can be linked to the problem focused coping strategy plan and prioritize.

Corporate Governance and Banking Governance within Conventional and Islamic banking systems.: A Cross-case Study between Conventional banks in Sweden and Islamic banks in UK.2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to understand and analyse the relationship between corporate governance (CG) and banking governance (BG) in Conventional and Islamic banking systems. The reason for choosing this topic was because the regulations and banking systems within Conventional banks are differently in comparison to Islamic banks, which means that their corporate governance and banking governance are influenced by different mechanisms and therefore regulated differently. Since Conventional banks stands for a small amount of Islamic banks in their markets and Islamic countries do have Conventional banks in theirs, made this topic a good case study. Furthermore is Sweden a Conventional country where they don’t offer Islamic financial services and the UK is a Conventional country where they do, which was an interesting fact since both of them are European countries with similar regulations. The author of this thesis chose qualitative, semi-structured interviews, where six persons: three from Sweden and three from the UK stood for answers toward their banking systems. Since these respondents were standing on a high position within their organizations did they have the knowledge needed to answer the questions asked. The result showed that the relationship between CG and BC in Conventional and Islamic banking systems have an impact in the way different types of banks operate. Identifying the Conventional and Islamic banks differences and assessing on how the Corporate Governance and Banking Governance do operate solves the complexity in the system. Based on the findings, countries that are applying the Conventional system need to expand their regulations and mechanisms so that other systems could operate without a need for changes in their own. They also need to expand their knowledge, where the population needs to be familiar with other banking systems and services as well.

Ideellt arbete pågår!: Kunskapsöverföring mellan eventprojekt i mindre idrottsföreningar2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the Swedish sports clubs non-profit work is in progress. Much of voluntary work in the smaller sports clubs is done by organizing events. The events are important for securing income. Event Project generates a large amount of knowledge that needs to be transferred to following projects to ensure quality.

Five interviews and a questionnaire were carried out, with people, who work in small sports club as volunteers. The results of the interviews show that the most common factors affecting knowledge transfer in smaller sports are time, roles and routines. These factors affect knowledge transfer to different degrees but the result show that it is the individual’s knowledge transfer abilities which is the strength of the small sport clubs. These factors help people participate and feel more auto-nomous, but they can also result barriers to knowledge transfer. People organizing these events develop invaluable knowledge, which needs disseminating to further projects.

The study results highlight the paradox that arises when unions are trying to reduce labor input by streamlining.

    Abstract [en]

In the early 1960's century, gender equality became a political concept in Sweden, but nearly 60 years later, women and men still do not have the same opportunity and power to form the society and their lives. In 2017 the #metoo movement became viral all over the world and since then the requirement for a gender equal society has increased. According to previous research, this may encourage organizations to examine themselves. Organizations with gender equality leads to increased development and profitability, however, many professions are still gender-marked and stereotypical for men. This is, according to previous research, partly due to the fact that gender notions and stereotypes are produced and reproduced by people within organizations, which makes it important to understand these individuals.

Thus, the purpose of this study is to generate knowledge about employees’ view of gender equality in larger organizations, and more specifically in the heavy engineering industry. By comparing the employees’ perceptions and experiences of gender equality, within different departments and levels, the study reflects on how gender equality is perceived and managed in larger organizations. The study applies a qualitative research design and the empirical material is based on a questionnaire, involving 261 respondents.

A conclusion is that the recruitment process is significant for the view of gender equality. Men urge for recruitment of more women, whilst they consider gender quotas to occur, and accuse it for being discriminative. These arguments results in a paradox, that contributes to previous research with another aspect of gender equality within organizations. The result also suggests, that there is a generational shift in the heavy engineering industry, where younger women are entering. This points to favourable development for the industry, as younger individuals generally have a more positive approach to gender equality, and since it leads to gender balance. Another conclusion is that the production area confirms the stereotypical performances that exist about them. Similarly, employees in higher positions tend to respond in accordance with what is expected of them. In conclusion, these factors prevent the gender equality work in organizations', that requires the problem to be visualized and problematized.

    Abstract [en]

There is a generous amount of research and theories about project management. All though, there is a gap in research regarding project's premature closure. It can be seen as a negative attitude towards projects and project management, to research whether more projects should be closed down or not. However, some completed projects through history proved to be unsuccessful in the end, which has raised the question how no one could predict this and stopped it. This study is a qualitative, deductive study of the theoretical framework built on primarily theories of premature projects termination. In the study we interviewed several project managers who had years of experience in project management industry. This study illustrates their experiences of premature projects termination. The result we found showed that it’s not common to shut down projects in the different organizations, but that it doesn’t necessarily mean that it wouldn’t have been better to do so. The conditions to terminate an ongoing project are difficult because of the various factors, both human and instrumental, which operates to complete a project, rather than terminate it. Those factors that affect the conditions of termination are that organizations skip parts in the planning phases, got a lacking knowledge about the different roles in their project and a selective transparency towards the project owner. Further, prestige and culture within the project organization also complicates a possible termination, as well as the fact that optimism within a project team and a foreclosure of skepticism which also complicates a termination. Project organizations also tends to implement careless closures of their projects, especially in those that are considered as failures, which doesn’t contributes learning between projects that might facilitate termination of future projects. The whole process in the typical environment of projects works so that it will help to increase the availability of resources to projects rather than decrease the same, when there is a risk that the project not will be successful.

Towards a Framework for Relational-Oriented Management of Information Systems Outsourcing: Key Conditions Connected to Actors, Relationships and Process2014Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Currently, client and supplier firms are struggling with how they can make their information systems (IS) outsourcing engagements more valuable. This research points to the importance of successful practice and outcome in IS outsourcing for achieving engagements of value. To enhance the understanding of IS outsourcing over time, a process perspective is applied. Further, this research is based on the contention that IS outsourcing is more likely to be successful if challenges are managed in a proactive manner and with a relationship perspective. Thus, understanding challenges in IS outsourcing requires a symmetric view on client and supplier.

The thesis is based on two studies presented as three steps of research: development, validation and reconsideration of a conceptual framework. The licentiate study centred on the step of development whereas the present doctoral study has a focus on the steps of validation and reconsideration. The purpose of this study includes investigating how the management of successful practice and outcome in IS outsourcing can be enabled. To address the purpose, the IS outsourcing process is studied in a client–supplier relationship. This includes that different actor perspectives, including strategic, operative, and systems, are considered for a better understanding of the practice of IS outsourcing, the challenges, and how different actors convey successful IS outsourcing.

The thesis contributes a framework for relational-oriented management of IS outsourcing, which provides the structure for understanding what needs to be managed in terms of key conditions, when and how in connection to actors, relationships, and process. Theoretical propositions, enhancing the understanding of the complexity of IS outsourcing as well as the number of challenges involved, are also presented. In brief, these propositions relate to the circumstance that IS outsourcing requires management on different levels and with different kinds of results in mind.
