    Abstract [en]

    In this article we explore children’s experiences of a Sport for All Programme (SAP) in school. The purpose of the ‘Sport for All’ policy is to give children an opportunity to try different sports, with a focus on play and motor learning rather than organized competition. In this study, we approach children as active agents in constructing the SAP practice in line with the theoretical standpoint that children are competent social actors with agency. The study is based on repeated focus group interviews with 15 ten-year-old children (9 girls, 6 boys) participating in a SAP in the western part of Sweden. The children perceived the SAP as sessions with less emphasis on performance and without organized competitions; it was described as a ‘low threshold’ activity. However, the result showed that the SAP activity was not free from performance-oriented principles. The Sport for All pedagogy needs to consider and handle the consequences of competition principles, especially if the participating children and leaders have a performance ethos.

    ”Vi kallade oss alltid SMARTISARNA”: En uppföljningsstudie av ett hälsofrämjande skolprojekt2018Report (Other academic)

    De flesta barn och ungdomar i Sverige är inte tillräckligt fysiskt aktiva. I Sverige idag är det få barn som når den rekommenderade mängden fysisk aktivitet på 60 minuter per dag. Forskningsgenomgångar har dokumenterat att skolbaserade interventioner har möjlighet att förbättra den fysiska statusen hos elever. Värmlands Idrottsförbund och Friskvården i Värmland beslutade 2004 att göra en satsning på ett hälsofrämjande skolprojekt – som fick namnet SMARTIS. Huvudmålet med SMARTIS var att öka barnens fysiska aktivitetsgrad i skolan och på fritiden samt att förbättra den fysiska förmågan. I föreliggande rapport studeras elevers beskrivningar av SMARTIS betydelse för deras levnadsvanor under och efter projektet. Studiens design omfattade individuella intervjuer och en gruppintervju med elever som tidigare deltagit i SMARTIS. Resultatet analyseras och diskuteras utifrån hur eleverna upplevde SMARTIS under sin tid på skolan och vilken betydelse SMARTIS har haft för det liv de lever idag. I rapporten synliggörs att för att ge alla elever möjlighet att utveckla varaktiga beteenden och vanor utanför skolan bör hälsofrämjande arbete i skolan vara relevant för eleverna och att de kan relatera de aktiviteter som genomförs till sig själva och deras vardagliga liv.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this article is to study children and engaged adults’ experiences of participating in a Sport for All Programme in school (SAP). Fifteen individual interviews were conducted with one programme manager, three schoolteachers, two sport club leaders, and nine children (five girls and four boys aged 9-10). Bourdieu’s (1990) as well as Lave and Wenger’s (1991) theoretical models were used as the analytic tools to study the SAP. The analysis reveals that the organization and the practice of the activities are noticeably related to conventionally organized sport. The analysis also shows that the SAP is a new way of organizing and practicing children’s sport – with its own logic. The absence of organized competition, the less intensive activities, the greater flexibility and variation in the SAP appear to challenge the conscious and unconscious idea of the meaning and function of competitive sport, especially in children’s sport. Thus, the SAP concept calls for a new way of approaching children’s sport, and new demands on those who organize and lead the activities.

    Abstract [en]

    As an attempt to reach physically inactive young people, especially girls, organized spontaneous sport (OSP) was implemented as a part of the state programme 'The Sports Lift' (2010). Projects, however, tended to primarily attract physically active boys rather than the actual target group. This problem calls for a qualitative approach to gain further knowledge about the interplay within the activities. Accordingly, this study aims to examine young people's experiences of OSP activities with focus on participation, leadership and determining processes. To fulfil this purpose, a case study design was implemented. Data were collected through observations (pilot study) and semi-structured interviews with participants. The theoretical point of departure is developmental ecology, emphasizing the individual's interaction with the multilevel environment. Results show that OSP is experienced as different from conventional organized sport. Further, the domination of boys is made possible through upholding the masculine sports norm, which is actualized within determining processes.

    Let’s do those 60 minutes! Children’s perceived landscape for daily physical activity2019In: Sport, Education and Society, ISSN 1357-3322, E-ISSN 1470-1243Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    In a scientific effort to understand the reasons for low physical-activity levels among children, there is a need to consider how children perceive and interact with their complex environments holistically. This study outlines an image of the perceived landscape within which children in two lower-socioeconomic contexts engage in daily physical activity. By applying bioecological perspectives (Bronfenbrenner, U. 2005. Making human Beings human: Bioecological perspectives on human development. SAGE), the aim included an analysis of how the perceived landscape and its interrelated factors influence children’s physical activity. We used 15 focus-group interviews with children (n = 63, ages 8–13) from four different rural and suburban areas of southern and central Sweden. Through analyzing the children’s stories about their experiences of everyday physical activity from a bioecological perspective, an image of a complex landscape was revealed. Structural (schools’ institutional frameworks), cultural (local sports cultures), and environmental factors (e.g. schoolyard design) were evident in interpersonal relations within the microsystem and interacted with personal characteristics, primarily gender and level of physical competence and, thereby, affected the possibilities of the children engaging in proximal processes related to physical activity. This study contributes new qualitative understanding based on children’s voices about how the performance of daily physical activity among younger children (ages 7–13) in lower-socioeconomic areas may be considered an interactional process between individuals and their perceived environment, which can be thought of as a multidimensional landscape. Implications include actions which contribute to more diverse environments enabling proximal processes among a broader group of children.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim was to explore how young riders experience the riding school. By analysing focus groups interviews, a picture emerged showing that young riders' main motive for participating at riding schools was the social aspects. Riding schools could be characterized through an institutional perspective in which the young riders became internalized and socialized into a stable culture. The young riders identified with the norms and values of the riding instructors through master-apprentice learning. In addition, the results revealed a change in the stable culture since the instructors encouraged social interactions and participation in the community that became central to learning and development. Opportunities to influence and interact were important for the individuals and from a child's rights perspective. Through participation in the community of practice at riding schools, young riders not only learn about riding and horse management but also develop important personal social skills.

    Nyanlända barns och ungdomars uppfattningar om och upplevelser av föreningsidrotten i Sverige2019Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Syftet med studien var att undersöka nyanlända barns och ungdomars uppfattningar om och upplevelser av den svenska föreningsidrotten. Studien har en multi-metod design, där 422 nyanlända barn och ungdomar har besvarat en specialkonstruerad enkät, och 107 har deltagit i fokusgruppintervjuer. Resultaten visar att en fjärdedel av respondenterna deltar i svensk förenings-idrott, närmare en femtedel har slutat föreningsidrotta, medan drygt hälften aldrig har idrottat i en förening i Sverige. Främsta motiven till att förenings-idrotta i Sverige är relaterat till att ha roligt, att det är bra och att det utvecklar det svenska språket. En stor andel av de nyanlända barn och ungdomarna i stu-dien uppger att de tränar eller tävlar i träningsgrupper/lag som är blandat med aktiva från Sverige och andra länder. Av de som för närvarande inte föreningsidrottar uppger drygt hälften att de skulle vilja idrotta i en förening. I övrigt visade deltagarmönstren på att poj-kar deltar i dubbelt så hög utsträckning i föreningsidrott som flickor. Ensam-kommande barn och ungdomar och de som inte har uppehållstillstånd idrottar också i högre utsträckning jämfört med de som anlände tillsammans med sin familj. Studien resultat visade vidare att fotboll, kampsport och basket är de mest ut övade idrotterna i Sverige. Tidigare hade 43 procent utövat någon form av organiserad idrott i hemlandet inom främst fotboll, kampsport och volley-boll. Endast hälften av de som hade idrottat i organiserad form i hemlandet del-tar i föreningsidrott i Sverige. Närmare hälften av nyanlända barn och ungdomar i studien har själva sökt upp och tagit kontakt med idrottsföreningarna och frågat om de får börja idrotta, medan endast 5 procent uppger att de har blivit kontaktade av ledare/föreningar i syfte att locka dem till idrotten. De nyanlända barn och ungdomar som i stu-dien uppgav att de inte idrottar, prioriterar skolan i högre utsträckning, upp-lever sig vara allmänt sämre i idrott, har föräldrar som inte är likna angelägna att deras barn idrottar, och har bristande kunskaper om hur de ska göra för att börja i en förening, jämfört med de som idrottar i en förening. En av de faktorer som stack ut i fokusgruppintervjuerna, och i de öppna svaren i enkäten, var nyanlända barns och ungdomars upplevelser av idrottsföreningar-nas frånvaro/ointresse av att kontakta och försöka värva de nyanlända barn och ungdomar som har en uttalad vilja att börja idrotta i en förening. Andra delar som uppfattades viktiga för nyanlända barns och ungdomars idrottande var att idrottsledaren bör ha en social kompetens och stötta varje individ i ett lag/en träningsgrupp, oavsett vilken kompetens eller tidigare bakgrund individen har.     Abstract [en]

    There is a widespread belief that organized sport can be used as a tool for positive youth development. However, phenomena such as parental pressure, binge drinking, doping, bullying and marginalization are also present within the sport milieu, with potential risks for negative outcomes to occur. The aim of the present study was to examine the longitudinal effects of organized sport involvement on indicators of youth psychosocial development over 24 months. Surveys assessing reported sport involvement and psychosocial development indicators were carried out at baseline (T1), 12 months (T2), and 24 months (T3). The results, based on self-reports of 920 youth, ages 10-18 years from Sweden, showed strong evidence of an association between baseline sports involvement and end line selfesteem (SE) (r=.15; p<.001), perceived physical competence (PPC) (r=.47; p<.001), and social competence (PSC) (r=.21; p<.001), reported grades (GRAD) (r=.13; p<.001) and alcohol use (ALC) (r=.10; p=.016). After adjusting for selection effects (i.e. dropping out of sport) and prior level outcomes, the effects of sport involvement on indicators of youths’ psychosocial development used in this study, were in general negligible (SE=.05, p=.20;PSC=.05, p=.20;GRAD=.04, p=.60;ALC=.03, p=.49) except for PPC (PPC=.14, p<.001). The results of this study highlight the importance of using longitudinal studies that account for variances explained by prior level outcomes, sociodemographic variables and dropouts from sports.

    The Relation Between Perceived Parent Created Motivation Climate and Elite Youth Soccer Player´s Moral Decisions in Sports: The importance of mothers

    BACKGROUND: There is a widespread belief that participating in organized sports contributes to character building and the development of moral attitudes.  However, the direction of the outcomes is to a large extent dependent on the influence of social environmental factors. Using Achievement Goal Theory (AGT) as a framework, several researchers have examined the link between a coach created motivation climate and morality aspects while the influence of the perceived motivation climate created by parents and morality has largely been overlooked.  Parents have shown to be the most significant socialization agents for children, but participation in elite sports in specializing and the investment years require continuously parental involvement and are therefore hypothesized to influence the moral attitudes of elite athletes in later adolescents.

    OBJECTIVE: To examine the relation between perceived parent created motivational climate (PPCM) and elite youth soccer player´s moral decision making in sports.

    METHODS: Swedish soccer players (n=144 males and 56 females) aged 16-19 years completed a questionnaire assessing perceptions of parent created motivational climate (PIMCQ-2) and Attitudes to moral decision in youth sport (AMDYSQ).

    RESULTS: Bivariate correlations were consistent with AGT contentions indicating positive relations between Worry Conducive Climate (WCC) and Acceptance of Cheating (AOC) and negative relations between Learning and Enjoyment Climate (LEC) and AOC for both parents (see table). A linear multiple regression analysis using fathers and mothers WCC and LEC as independent variables and AOC as the dependent variable revealed that WCC created by mothers were the only significant predictor of AOC (β=.18, p<.05).

    DISCUSSION: The results highlight the importance of creating a Learning and Enjoyment Climate and avoid creating a Worry Conducive Climate, especially by mothers, in order to enhance moral decision making in elite youth sports.

    Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine associations between late adolescent football players' perceptions of the motivational climate as initiated by mothers and fathers and attitudes towards moral decision making in sports. Design: Cross-sectional. Methods: Participants were 213 Swedish football players (144 males, 67 females) aged 16-19 years who completed measures assessing perceived parent-initiated motivational climate (i.e., success-without effort climate [SWEC]; worry conducive climate [WCC]; and learning/enjoyment climate [LEC]) and attitudes towards moral decision-making in sport (i.e., acceptance of cheating [AOC]; acceptance of gamesmanship [AOC.] and keeping winning in proportion [KWIP]). Results: Canonical correlations demonstrated moderate positive relations between parent initiated both mother and father performance climates (WCC and SWEC) and AOC and AOG. Moreover, the relationship between mother and father-initiated learning/enjoyment climate (LEC) were shown to be moderately and positively associated with the prosocial attitude dimension of KWIP. Results also showed that a mother-initiated LEC and a mother-initiated SWEC were stronger predictors of the criterion variables (AOC, AOG, and KWIP) than equivalent father-initiated climate dimensions. Conclusions: The results highlight the importance of considering the relationship between parent initiated climates especially initiated by mothers and the development of moral decision-making among youth football players.
