Den fabricerande människan: Om bedrägeri som vardaglig interaktionsform2007Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

The present dissertation takes the multi-faceted phenomenon of deception as its point of departure. The aim is to make a case for deception as a social phenomenon, and to frame theoretically and define the skills and abilities that make deception possible.

A theoretical model based on a number of ideal types is constructed. The purpose of the model is to differentiate particular aspects of deception, and the model is illustrated with examples of actions of more or less well-known impostors. The examples were collected from a variety of sources, such as autobiographies and television programs.

As a first step, the legal definition of deception, i.e. fraud, and statistics on crimes of deception in Sweden are presented. Different theoretical approaches are also discussed; deception as a personality trait, and deception as communication and interaction.

In order to illuminate the social dimensions, it is emphasized that deception constitutes a particular type of relationship between deceiver and deceivee. This particular form of interaction exploits elementary forms, and it is also asymmetrical in terms of the intentions of the parties involved.

The concept of social competence is used to describe the skills and abilities required for successful acts of deception. It is argued that the social competence of deceivers consists of three types: strategic, normative, and dramaturgic competencies. The strategic competency involves being goal-rational and strategic, for example, the ability to predict the actions of the potential addressee. In the normative competency, norms and reference to norms are used strategically. The dramaturgic competency represents an operationalization and enactment of the two other competencies, and resembles the preparation and performance of an actor.

The different contexts in which deception can occur are also discussed. A preliminary typology is presented, with the aim of demonstrating the difficulties in drawing clear lines between various types of deception. The extended approach to deception also means that it can be viewed as a part of everyday social interaction.

Finally, some thoughts on deception in the light of societal changes are presented. It is argued that the increasing demands on people to promote themselves in various ways in todays society can be perceived as an invitation to deception and fabrication. These demands can generate feelings of inferiority and a fear of eventually being unmasked as an impostor, or a phony.

Exploring self-loyalty in the context of social acceleration: Theorising loyalties as emotions and resistance2018In: Resistance and emotions: Interrogating crossroads and social change / [ed] Mikael Baaz, Satu Heikkinen, Mona Lilja, Routledge, 2018Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This book discusses different ways in which the cross-roads between emotions and resistance can be theorised. While the sociological field focuses primarily on emotions that are entangled in the relationship between the individual and collective, the cultural studies field has recently started to emphasise affects as a ‘rescue’ from the deterministic aspect of the poststructuralist approach (in which language decides everything) (Hemmings 2005, 2014). Scholars promoting the ‘affective turn’ argue that affects and interpretations are inseparable. By taking affects as the point of departure, it is argued that it is possible to show how bodies move in their own ways, but still in relation to others. Departing from this, it becomes interesting to explore how emotions are involved in different power relations and how they feed resistance. If we accept that emotions and interpretations are entangled and inseparable then we must investigate emotions as powerful forces of resistance.

    Abstract [en]

This article is a theoretical exploration of a layer of loyalty called self-loyalty. We define self-loyalty as an emotion that is channelled through social forms. To show the usage and relevance of the concept we present social acceleration as a contextualisation. Two self-loyalty strategies in relation to acceleration are discussed: a voluntary form based on resistance and an involuntary form based on acceptance and 'playing the game'.

    Abstract [sv]

    Lojalitetskonflikter2021 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Negative and positive loyalty2018Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

One way to conceptualize the complexity of working life is to see it through the lens of loyalty. When a person works several loyalties are active – the legal duty of loyalty to the employer; loyalty to colleagues, loyalty to the profession, et cetera.

It is common to make distinctions between different forms of loyalties – it is for example different to be loyal to your friend compared to being loyal to your country. In our own research we have focused on the differences between vertical and horizontal loyalties. But to the best of our knowledge one important distinction is quite absent from previous research about loyalty: The distinction is between negative and positive loyalty. This conceptual pair is inspired by Isaiah Berlins classical discussion about freedom . Berlin theorizes two different forms of freedom – negative freedom (freedom from coercion) and positive freedom (freedom as autonomy and personal development).

George P. Fletcher has in his classical study on loyalty come close to our distinction. He uses the concept of “minimum loyalty” (what we call negative loyalty) and “maximum loyalty” (positive loyalty). The problem with Fletcher´s terminology is that it connotes a quantitative difference when the difference in reality is qualitative. Some loyalties can be characterized as an absence of disloyalty (when a person obeys the legal duty of loyalty) – we call this form negative loyalty. And some loyalties are filled with the presence of emotions, commitment and so on – this is positive loyalty.

The present study is theoretically oriented, and methodologically we have been inspired by Richard Swedberg’s notion of theorizing and his ideas about its central role in social science.

    Självlojalitet i arbetslivet2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [sv]

The Cole-Guetzkow-view on loyalty conflicts in organizational and everyday life2018Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Albert O. Hirschman's concepts of exit, voice, and loyalty constitute a well-known theoretical model frequently used in problems concerning loyalties and loyalty conflicts. Despite Hirschman's contributions, we argue that loyalty conflicts are not sufficiently theoretically or empirically explored. In this paper we use theorizing, a method provided by Richard Swedberg, to analyze loyalty conflicts, both in organizational and everyday life and present alternative and complementary perspectives to Hirschman's model. This approach is also a continuation of our own previous research about different forms of loyalties. Two thinkers we consider to be interesting in this case are G. D. H. Cole (1925/26) and Harold Guetzkow (1955). The theoretical perspectives of these two thinkers are combined in the paper – and this is what we call "the Cole-Guetzkow-view". From G. D. H. Cole, the idea is that society and everyday life are built from a complex weaving of competing loyalties, as well as the idea that loyalty conflicts, and their handling, tightens our discernment and rationality. In sum, loyalty conflicts develop us as reflecting human beings. Guetzkow, from his point of view, discusses different strategies to use when faced with loyalty conflicts. For example, a loyalty conflict can be solved through divided loyalties called compartmenting as in this case: a person may feel loyal to the church on Sundays while more profane loyalties are relevant during the rest of the week. In conclusion, the Cole-Guetzkow-view on loyalty conflicts contributes with ingenious and creative strategies and solutions to different social and moral dilemmas both in organizations and everyday life. The creative and strategic aspects of people facing loyalty conflicts are sometimes missing in the Hirschman-model were the Cole-Guetzkow view can function in a complementary way. As a link between Cole and Guetzkow some ideas from Morton Grodzins are used.

Work as loyalty?: Playfully theorizing two concepts2020Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this presentation we playfully theorizing the concepts of work and loyalty. It is not unusual to see these concepts related to each other in different ways – loyalty in the workplace and in organizations is a well known phenomenon. But here we intend to take one step further: we explore the possibilities for treating work and loyalty as synonymous. In our previous research we have defined loyalty as a ”binding to something specific”. This binding can exist in many different forms - for example in negative form (as absence of disloyalty), and in positive form (loyalty in form of presence – as emotions and commitment). We have identified six forms of positive loyalty. Vertical-involuntary loyalty, vertical-voluntary, horizontal-involuntary, horizontal-voluntary. Among the positive loyalty forms we also find two forms of self-loyalty – voluntary and involuntary. In our playful theorizing with the two concepts we look for interesting etymological similarities between the words and concepts. One similarity concerns ”legal” aspects of both concepts. Loyalty has roots in the french word ”loi”, and in some definitions of ”work” there is a notion of work as ”legal fulfilment”. In our playful way of theorizing we continue our effort to practice a ”conceptual archaeology” and thereby use some older nearly forgotten research about both work and loyalty. But we also make some important connections to new research. Methodologically we are inspired by Richard Swedberg´s approach of theorizing. Also Karlsson and Bergman´s ideas about the importance of theorizing have influenced us.

Roll och identitet: En socialpsykologisk introduktion2017Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Socialpsykologiska experiment: och andra minnesvärda studier2019Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this article is to examine organizational understandings and perceptions that can affect the current work with defectors from and members in violent and extremist environments. The empirical material consists primarily of answers to open questions in a survey, where professionals from four organizations are represented: social services, school, police and politics. The material is analyzed with direct qualitative content analysis and shows two contradict approaches to the problem; one that argues for "fighting the evil" and another that argues for "promoting the good". The theoretical framework presented is Erving Goffmans’ frame analysis, Howard S. Beckers’ labelling process and Ingrid Sahlins’ discussion about different kinds of prevention strategies. The results show how organizational understandings and perceptions are far from uniform but rather disparate, and also that assumptions made by professionals have wide implications – often related to morally based approaches grounded on notions of good and evil.

On gray dancing: Constructions of age-normality through choreography and temporal codes2017In: Journal of Aging Studies, ISSN 0890-4065, E-ISSN 1879-193X, Vol. 42, p. 38-45Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Against the background of population aging, older peoples dance has attracted attention in research and its health promoting effects and social meanings have been brought to the fore. In this article we focus on the context and power dimensions of dance with an emphasis on the organizing of dance among older adults in terms of social discourses and age relationships. On the basis of qualitative interviews with 33 older dancers and 11 dance providers in Sweden, the study illustrates how dance is organized through social discourses on healthism and on the increasing group of older people as a powerful consumer group. The study highlights that older people and their social dance contexts are marked and subordinated in relation to younger age groups through non-verbal practices such as choreography and temporal codes. In short, dancing among older adults is not only a common health promoting and social activity, but also an arena in which age and age normality are negotiated and constructed.

    Abstract [en]

Exploring time loyalty. The interweaving of time and loyalty in faculty administrator’s work strategies

This article has an exploring and theorizing approach and aims to explore the function of the notion of time together with the concept of loyalty. The notion of acceleration of time and the new ”flexible” working life has created a duality where bureaucratic and administrative systems exist side by side with a more flexible organization, within which people can organize and plan their work themselves. That creates unregulated spaces, where administrators have to navigate and manage conflicting loyalties and uncertain responsibilities, creating further uncertainty, putting questions about one’s use of time and loyalties in focus. We explore this development by using the concept time loyalty and use that connection to analyze interviews with administrative staff within a university.

This article concludes that there are ongoing negotiations regarding what to do, for whom, and when as well as legitimizing actions to justify fail responses to loyalty claims.
