    Abstract [sv]

Den förlorade sonen möter kärleken: Aktuell gudsförståelse i nordisk kontext2004In: Tidskrift for Teologi og Kirke 75Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Feminist theology, in its various forms, expresses major characteristics of a contemporary Christian understanding of God. It is not primarily an alternative or marginal phenomenon. In this article, I analyze the theme of the love of God in dialogue with Carter Heyward and Anders Nygren. Heywards theology can be characterized as contemporary and liberal, while Nygrens belongs to our heritage and is traditional. Taking my own point of departure in reflection on a feminist understanding of motherhood, I critically analyze both my liberal and my traditional conversation partner. The analysis is deepened and clarified through interpretations of the parable of the prodigal son. My theology is made in the simultaneous problematizing of theological concepts and biblical interpretations, related to my context as a woman in a Nordic country, wrestling with a Jewish-Christian heritage in European form and at the intersection of traditional and contemporary theology

Makt i nordisk teologisk tolkning2004Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Power can be legitimate and necessary, but it can also be oppressive. The Powers without any masters create their own structures, which cannot any longer easily be tamed. What about for example globalization, does it create rather than prevent conflicts? Is there really an invisible godlike hand managing the economy? How can Christian interpretations of life analyze and transform the invisible driving forces underlying globalization?

Religion can offer legitimations as well as crucial criticisms of power constellations. This book departs from the insight that religious traditions can develop a countervailing power to cultural and social constructions. Religious contributions to political challenges are not only protesting, but also providing fruitful alternatives to the anonymous powers.

The power and influence of religion itself seems to decrease and increase at the same time. The institutional church has lost its national power on the one side, while people tend to be more and more interested in spirituality on the other side. Religion functions in new ways today. This is also the case within faith communities, which are are revisioning their identities and power relations in late modernity.

The authors of this anthology invite their readers to approach the phenomena of power from different angles. Among the manifold cases investigated the reader will find non-voluntary childlessness, the power of the instantaneous and visual culture. Furthermore, the understandings of power presented by Hannah Arendt, Michel Foucalut, Vaclav Havel, Sor Juana, Krysztof Kieslowski and Maw Weber are analyzed. A central problem investigated by all authors is how to relate autonomy and heteronomy to each other in a new way.

The book has been produced by scholars of Theology and Religious Studies, cooperating in The Nordic Network of Contextual Theology, founded 1991 and gathering more than 50 scholars from all Nordic countries.

Mary Among Stereotypes and Dogmas: A Feminist Critique and Reinterpretation of the Patriarchal Cornerstone of Motherhood2007In: Journal of the European Society of Women in Theological ResearchArticle in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

While body and sexuality are often the main focus of gender studies, motherhood is not. The purpose of this article is to analyze and reinterpret the conceptualization of motherhood in the perspective of a critical discussion between Scandinavian and Anglo-American feminist theology in relation to Mary, the mother of Jesus, as an image of the mother. Mary strongly promotes both gender stereotypes and petrified Christian dogmas. This is why a parallel reflection on gender stereotypes of motherhood and the image of the virgin mother Mary is important. The strategies used by contemporary feminist theologians tend either to leave aside gender stereotypes or religious petrified dogmas. Through a reinterpretation of the story of the annunciation a rereading is presented, which neither locks Mary up in a patriarchal view of motherhood, nor lets petrified dogmas determine the interpretation. The characteristic of motherhood of not being in control (heteronomy) is emphasized, but simultaneously the patriarchal abuse of this phenomenon is confronted. Mary should neither be reduced to the stereotype of the oppressed woman, nor to the ideal of the vulnerable female, but should be envisioned as someone who shows us the close relation between exposure, oppression, vulnerability and love

Moderskap och kärlek: Schabloner och tankeutrymme i feministteologisk livsåskådningsreflektion2005Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

This book aims at a critical analysis of understandings of motherhood in dialogue with a critical understanding of Christian theology. The concept of love is clarified by means of a reconstructed perception of motherhood. A method of correlation assigns equal weight to experience and claims of revelation. The difficulty to establish a clear border between the two is respected and methodologically met by systematic comparisons between three paradigmatic relationships for reflections on love. Biblical texts are cracked open for new interpretations by means of the model of scriptural criticism, allowing for unconventional concepts forming part of the process of interpretation. A gender perspective characterizes the analysis through a consequent parallelization of stereotype views of gender and likewise stereotype understandings of Christian doctrine, clearly exemplified by Mary, the virgin mother. The stereotypes are contextualized and critically reflected upon. The process of feminist theological reflection is activated in order to also serve other fields of feminist reflection on motherhood and love that often neglects the importance of confronting Christian stereotypes and simply dismisses them. The study stresses the relationship between love and vulnerability. By viewing oppression and love as two alternative ways of handling the aspect of life where we are not in control, i.e. our heteronomy, the challenge of love is clarified and emphasized

och likväl rör det sig: Genusrelationer i förändring2005Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Overture: Receptions, Critical Interpretations and Scriptural Criticism2000In: / [ed] Daniel Patte, Harrisburg: Trinity Press International , 2000Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This book originates from a seminar within The Society of Biblical Literature called Romans Through History and Culures. The Overture spells out a hermeneutical practice used in the seminar, but also among other biblical interpreters - scholars and lay people. This practice is named Scriptural criticism, which underlines simultaneously the importance of critical scholarly work and the recognition of the bible as a text understood by many as scripture. Scriptural criticism urges each interpreter to take into account the analytical, contextual and hermeneutical frames of the interpretive process

Romans Interpreted: A Comparative Analysis of the Commentaries of Barth, Nygren, Cranfield and Wilckens on Paul´s Epistle to the Romans1990Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis deals with the problem of how to explain different interpretations of Paul's Epistle to the Romans in the four contemporary commentaries of Karl Barth, Anders Nygren, Charles Cranfield and Ulrich Wilckens. The purpose of this study is to put forward and analyse the different interpretations given by the commentators and to examine some ways in which these differences may be explained.

The differences analysed primarily concern central theological issues. A detailed description of the four different interpretations of Romans is given on three levels: (i) concerning Romans 7, (ii) concerning some theological themes in Romans and (iii) concerning some general remarks on Romans which are important for the interpretation of the Epistle.

Different kinds of interpretations are defined by the development of a theory of interpretation which focuses on the arguments supporting the commentators' choices of interpretation. The different interpretations of Romans are explained by reference to the commentators' pursuit of different combinations of kinds of interpretations and by the contents of their arguments. Explanations are also found in their pursuit of different combinations of purposes. Their views of the contents of Christian faith, revelation and the Bible also explain the different interpretations. Special attention is paid to a fundamental lack of clarity in the commentaries concerning the relation between reconstructive and constructive interpretations, the problem of application.

The commentaries are used as examples of biblical interpretation to arrive at a detailed knowledge of the complex process of interpretation. Distinctions are developed concerning kinds of interpretations, kinds of purposes and different views of revelation and the Bible

The Old Testament, Christianity and Pluralism1995Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

How can we give acceptable contemporary Old Testament interpretations which do justice to pluralism? Cristina Grenholm examines this problem by analysing six contemporary approaches.

The starting point is Gerhard von Rad's work. Important challenges are represented by the critical approach of James Barr, the feminist approach of Phyllis Trible, the liberation theology approach of J. Severino Croatto, the Jewish approach of Jon D. Levenson and the traditional approach of Brevard S. Childs.

These approaches are analysed and compared with respect to their purposes, views of the Old Testament, views of Christianity, and views of revelation and authority at a general level.

Cristina Grenholm also analyses their interpretive application to a selection of Old Testament texts. She identifies the problems and advantges of the approaches and uses them to establish six criteria for acceptable contemporary Christian Old Testament interpretations which all relate to pluralism in different aspects. Finally, she sketches an approach which meets the stipulated criteria. Two main characteristics of this approach are that biblical interpretation is treated as a complex process and that underlying perspectives and evalutations of the interpreter are regarded as important ingredients in the whole process

Tolkning och reflektion: Att rita kartor över nedärvda könsrelationer2005In: / [ed] Gunnel Forsberg, Karlstad: Karlstad University Press , 2005Chapter in book (Other academic)
