Codex and Code: Aestethcis, Language and Politics in an Age of Digital Media: NORLIT 2009, Stockholm, August 6-9, 20092010Conference proceedings (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the conference was to develop the study of Comparative Literature through Nordic collaboration both in its own discipline and in Modern Language and Cultural studies. As the title for the conference suggests, the principal question for the conference was the challenge that the study of literature encounters in an age of digitalization and globalization. It was our aim to encourage discussion of how literary studies respond to the ongoing changes in media and technology, politics and economy. Many have argued that the Humanities currently are in a state of crisis. We believe that the discipline seldom has found itself in such an interesting and fruitful historical moment. Several of these questions have surfaced duringearlier media system changes, in particular during Romanticism and Modernism, which provided the conference with an historical frame. The conference Codex and Code also addressed questions of authenticity and originality, identity and gender, literary genres and reading practices, media and materiality, culture and popular culture, language and history, world literature, work aesthetics, translations, and canon formation.

    Abstract [en]

Öyvind Fahlström’s famous manifesto for concrete poetry HÄTILA RAGULPR PÅ FÅTSKLIABEN.

(1954) was written as a reaction to the authors conference in Sigtuna 10–12 April 1953, which was the

incentive he needed to rewrite a program that had probably already been started into a manifesto.

However, Fahlström’s own interests must be subsumed under a transnational avant-garde aesthetics. The

Swedish literary field existed in parallel to the international avant-garde movements that he promoted

and that in principle occurred independently of the Swedish field. The conference was therefore only an

accidence for the advent of the manifesto, and a discussion of part one with its ridicule will contribute no

knowledge about its essence: his program. With a better understanding of the relation between the Sigtuna

conference and Fahlström’s manifesto, a more accurate view of the Swedish 1950s can be established,

at the same time as future research can focus the essence of the manifesto: its processuality and performativity.

(forgive us,o life!the sin of Death: A Critical Reading of Michael Riffaterre's Semiotics of Poetry2011In: Textual practice, ISSN 0950-236X, Vol. 25, no 5, p. 913-939Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The objectives of this article are two-fold: in part a presentation of Riffaterres semiotic-based analysis of poetry, and in part an examination of its problems and predicaments, using modern experimental poetry by way of example. Due to the fact that Semiotics of Poetry was introduced to the Anglo-American world at the same moment as a second wave of deconstruction was building up, Riffaterres theory was largely criticised for not adhering to new values, or ignored, despite the value of his semiotics of poetry as an analytical and pedagogical aid in the study of poetry. The problems that present themselves with respect to Riffaterres semiotics of poetry are mainly linked to his formalistic dependence on textuality, which cause him to ignore any factors other than intertextuality in the production of lyric poetry. This would suggest an appreciable limitation in the practicability of this method of gaining an overall grasp of what poetry is. In addition, I shall discuss the problems raised as a result of Riffaterres own hermeneutic practice of interpretation, thus offering a further illustration of the obstacles encountered in attempting to employ his semiotics of poetry. Finally, I shall endeavour to situate this method in a comprehensive poetic analysis, in order to demonstrate its primary practicability as a descriptive discipline

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish artist Öyvind Fahlström moved to New York in 1961, where he meet the Swedish engineer Billy Klüver, and became part of the international neo-avant-garde movement. Fahlström’s performance, New York 1966, part of Klüver’s performance series 9 Evenings, is my point of departure for an analysis of the role of migration for the neo-avant-gardes in the 1960s. As intermediaries, Fahlström and Klüver brought new ideas both to New York and Stockholm, thus challenging the established view that American art was exported to the periphery. In reality, the New York art scene grew out of ideas and experiences arriving with immigrating artists, who in turn often exchanged ideas developed in the New York melting pot with actors in their original artistic and cultural contexts.

L'Art, expression de la Société, est précurseur et révélateur: The Heterogeneity of the Notion of Avant-Garde2010Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this article, I shall try to shed some new light upon the notion of avant-garde, with the purpose of showing its different national use and heterogeneity of meaning. This pluralism is overlooked today because of the hegemony of English in academic studies, which leads one to believe that a consensus exists in the use of the term avant-garde, since so many academics write their articles and books in this language. This article, therefore, is an attempt to recuperate the notion of avant-garde to stringent use and gain a deeper insight into the aes-thetic movements of modernity and late modernity. I hope to show that, despite the fact that many writers believe that there exists only one recognition of the notion of avant-garde, the understanding of the Anglo-American centre is actually as peripheral as that of other coun-tries which are normally regarded as peripheries. Instead of retaining the logocentric dichot-omy of centre-periphery, an understanding of the heterogeneity forces us to realize that this dichotomy is of no value, since all understandings are equally peripheral when it comes to the notion of avant-garde in an international perspective

    Abstract [en]

Avant-garde aesthetic movements react on and appropriate new technological media in a process of breaking down the boundaries between different media and different “arts," in an attempt to generate meaning from the sheer materiality of the artwork. Avant-garde artworks will therefore by necessity be marked by media in different ways, at the same time as these art forms are processual, performative and transgressive. One of the prime Swedish examples of this avant-garde strategy is Ake Hodell’s many realizations of his manuscript Lågsniff. The manuscript, written in 1963, was in the form of a text-sound-composition, which means that Lågsniff, already in this form, took many configurations with a plurality of genres and media modalities involved. Later the manuscript was realized as a series of performances, a TV-film, a book, and in 2002 as a DVD. For such a collection of art works, I would like to suggest the term “intermedial cluster.” The point of departure for my discussion is the DVD, a remediation of the TV- film from 1966, and I will focus on two of the juxtaposed discourses in the cluster that this DVD represents: the package tour and warfare, and on two thematic foci in the film: media and memory, and man as automaton.

    Abstract [en]

Öyvind Fahlström (1928–76) began as a surrealist at the end of the 1940s, and among others wrote the unpublished poetry collection “The Trumpet in the Bottom”. In 1953, he wrote the world’s first manifesto for concrete poetry, inspired by Pierre Schaeffer’s musique concrète, and soon became a driving force in the Swedish and international neo-avantgarde. In the mid-1950s he turned to the visual arts, and later he also wrote radio plays, directed movies and arranged performances and happenings. He showed an extraordinary sensibility for the uncanny in his selection of “life material” for his art, thus uncovering the return of the repressed in everyday life and popular culture, in the form of scatology, pornography, the monstrous, the body, the materiality of the artwork and media, and so on. In his art, this uncanny life material was turned into political statements. In my article the discussion is exemplified from different genres of Fahlström’s œuvre, from his early texts and radio plays, to his visual art.
