    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

From 1930 until 1970 dispersed efforts were made in Sweden to educate school leaders. In 1975 an organisation for a systematic education of school leaders carried by the state was established in the country. A review is presented of the five different editions of school leader education that have existed in Sweden since then. Work of state committees and decisions at national level are described that have influenced the content, the design and the organisational localisation of the Swedish school leader education. The institutionalisation of the educational programme for school leaders in Sweden is clarified. The author of the book participated in the state committee that presented a proposal that was used as the ground for the first edition of the Swedish school leader education. He served for fifteen years as the manager of the Swedish school leader education.

Forskning om rektor - en forskningsöversikt2000Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract

Differences between Teachers’ and Principals’ Expectations of School Leaders in Simulated Situations2020Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Research shows that context matters when principals execute their role and that it affects how successful principals become in leading their respective schools. Expectations that occur in daily encounters between teachers and principals at local school organizations are focused on in a pilot study to discover how teachers’ expectations influence their principal’s work in practice. The research questions are: 1) How do teachers’ experience-based expectations differ from more ideal expectations? 2) How do teachers’ and principals’ expectations differ in simulated real situations? and 3) In what way do expectations expressed by teachers and school leaders differ from more ideal expectations expressed in school policy documents? The study is framed within social psychological and organization development perspectives. The results from this pilot study, where we also test the validity of the methodology, show that there are differences in experience-based and ideal expectations of principals. In situations where internal pressure is present there is a closer gap between these two kinds of expectations compared to situations where external pressures have a more prominent role. Teachers and school leaders agree that the role of the principal is of importance to the school and they also share most views on what a principal should do and how to act appear as at the school. The focal point of the study is relations between teachers and their principals and the evaluation of how norms are constituted in real situations and subsequently how they shape the role of the school leader.

Tillsättning av skolledare: Rörelser i tiden1997Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Awareness of the backwash effect of assessment: A phenomenographic study of the views of Hong Kong and Swedish lecturers2005In: Instructional Science 33(4)Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

An effective way to change student learning is to change the form of assessment. This has become known as the backwash effect of assessment. However, academic teachers ways of understanding the role of assessment in student learning are also important. This paper reports a phenomenographic study of the views of the role of assessment amongst Swedish and Hong Kong university teachers. The results are described in eight categories of conceptions, placed within a two-dimensional outcome space. The two dimensions are (1) the relation between teaching and assessment, and (2) the focus of the backwash effect. The results indicate that two features of the described conceptions are critical for changing teachers views of the role of assessment. One is the way one understands the significance of basic knowledge in ones discipline while the other is whether one looks upon the relation between teaching and assessment as being of an internal or external nature. As much research literature points out, to bring about changes in approaches to teaching and learning you must first bring about changes in conceptions of teaching and learning. To utilize assessment to improve student learning, teachers need to be made aware of the need of such improvement and of the role assessment can play in this process. On the basis of research such as that reported in this paper, staff developers could develop workshops or other strategies, which can accomplish this task.
