Connecting Europe:: Politics of Information Society in the EU and Turkey2009Book (Refereed)
    Abstract

During the 1990s, in parallel with new media-related initiatives in the US and the Asia-Pacific region, the EU launched its own information society policies in an effort to become, the most competitive knowledge-based economy in the world by 2010. In addition to full members, the task of achieving a European Information Society for all was also expected of candidate countries, including Turkey.

In Connecting Europe: Politics of Information Society in the EU and Turkey, taking the policy arena as a discursive space, Dr. Miyase Christensen explores the evolution of information society policies in the EU and Turkey. Globalization processes from the 1990s on are explored from the standpoint of contemporary media and communications theory and political economy. Conceptualizing the global and regional shifts in the context of social change and taking commodification and spatialization as entry points, the book presents a detailed account of some of the crucial developments to date (on both on the EU and Turkish sides) based upon in-depth interviews with key stakeholders. The factors that shape the political economy of the telecommunications and ICT sectors in both the EU and Turkey are increasingly complex, engendering new spaces of politics, economy and citizenship

Mediations of Spatial Attachment and Belonging in the City2011Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to illuminate mediation and creative articulation of the city, by migrant groups and individuals, both as an extension of and in juxtaposition to the imaginaries accommodated by the national space of the host country. Based on an ethnographic study (conducted between 2008 and 2010) of migrants originating from Turkey (of various Turkish and Kurdish ethnicities) living in Stockholm, this paper discusses how the city, and urban space, feeds into the expressive pursuit of sustaining and forging identificatory categories based on and around ethnicity, culture, location and generation by taking social constellations launched on online social media as a case in point. The majority of the individuals interviewed for this project express identification with the city, in this case Stockholm (and, with the urban-cultural elements) to a significantly greater degree than they relate to “Sweden”, its national space and culture and the national discourse on migrants and migration. The paper draws upon the conceptual frameworks of expressivity (Hetherington, 1998) and cultural citizenship in order to account for everyday communicative processes that lie outside of the formal, Westphalian definition of citizenship; and, on the notions of space, mobility and reflexivity in relation to the ways in which these notions are embodied in the communication process

Notes on the Public Sphere on a National and Post-National Axis: Journalism and Freedom of Expression in Turkey2010In: Global Media and Communication, ISSN 1742-7665, Vol. 6, no 2, p. 177-197Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Since Turkey became a candidate for the European Union in 1999, democratic rights and freedom of expression have been key issues in discourses surrounding EUTurkey relations. Discussions on these questions often centre on state censorship and legislative constraints. The role of the media themselves, however, and the deeply-ingrained elements and historically-contingent norms and practices within public culture that shape the public sphere, have received a significantly lower level of attention. Despite recent legislative changes towards greater freedom of expression, major hurdles that limit democratic rights and freedoms persist in practice, as highlighted by the judicial trial (and the subsequent murder in January 2007) of the Armenian-Turkish journalist Hrant Dink. The police raid of Nokta magazine in 2007 is another case in point. The purpose of this article is to discuss current questions related with freedom of expression and tolerance of diversity in the Turkish media based on in-depth interviews with journalists and with the Dink and Nokta cases as examples; and to offer critical reflections on the public sphere in Turkey in its current state

Online mediations in transnational spaces: cosmopolitan (re)formations of belonging and identity in the Turkish diaspora2012In: Ethnic and Racial Studies, ISSN 0141-9870, E-ISSN 1466-4356, Vol. 35, no 5, p. 888-905Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The lives of transnational groups and individuals are marked by a spatial and imaginary split: a phenomenon wherein identity, belonging and representation have become increasingly elusive concepts, and the realm of the ‘cultural’ vastly important. And, the theoretical compasses of cosmopolitanism and transnationalism are particularly relevant and illuminating in considering social space, mediated communication and belonging in relation to urban diasporic communities and gendered subjectivities. The aim of this paper is to address expressions of identity and belonging at the intersection of online communicative practice and offline spatial formations, with a focus on the specificities of gendered constructions of sociality and subjectivity in the diaspora

Transnational Communicative Sociality between Mobility and Fixity: The Case of the Turkish Migrants2011Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper concerns itself with the potentiality latent in online social networking sites for constituting a communicative space for politics and cultural voice in transnational contexts. The fluidity (in terms of spatial borders and participatory practices) of online fora takes political engagement and identificatory experiences to a new level where the offline and the online merge and collide, resulting in both continuity and rupture. Amongst the Turkish transnationals in Sweden, new social constellations such as Turks in Stockholm and Swedish Turks have recently emerged on Facebook as popular meeting points. Identity and politics on these sites are articulated both against and alongside of categories and politics represented by longstanding diasporic representative bodies and mainstream media, thereby constituting new spaces for communicative sociality, for clash and solidarity, and new sphericules for political deliberation. This paper will investigate mediated political discourse and articulations of transnational social imaginaries based on qualitative fieldwork
