    Topologies of tourism enclaves2019Ingår i: Tourism Geographies, ISSN 1461-6688, E-ISSN 1470-1340, Vol. 21, nr 5, s. 864-880Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Research on tourism enclaves has relied mainly on topographical understandings of the phenomenon. The focus has been on the ontic, that which is or exists instead of the relational qualities or properties of tourism enclaves. Topographical conceptions thus tend to simplify enclavic processes and attributes that are much more complex than meets the eye. In this article, we make the case for topological understandings of tourism enclaves, based on a relational ontology, as a complement. We thereby strive to offer more nuanced conceptions of tourism enclaves. We depart from Agamben's political ontology to illustrate our claim. Seen topologically, tourism enclaves are not simply spaces marked-off from the norm, but rather constituents of the norm. Tourism enclaves need to be theorized as 'prototypes' or 'laboratories' of new subjectivities (ways of being, relating, and experiencing the world). The tourist thus emerges as a model figure of biopolitics in the contemporary, the norm rather than the exception. The tourist is not that which is abandoned by the sovereign in the manner of Agamben, but rather a free exilant, a subject that self-willingly chooses abandonment. We deploy topological concepts, like Agamben's the ban, the camp, and state of exception. Such a conception, we argue, widens the ontological register or horizon of tourism theory.

Geomedia Studies: Spaces and Mobilities in Mediatized Worlds2018Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This book introduces and develops the concept of geomedia studies as the name of a particular subfield of communication geography. Despite the accelerating societal relevance of 'geomedia' technologies for the production of various spaces, mobilities, and power-relations, and the unquestionable emergence of a vibrant research field that deals with questions pertaining to such topics, the term geomedia studies remains surprisingly unestablished. By addressing imperative questions about the implications of geomedia technologies for organizations, social groups and individuals (e.g. businesses profiting from geo-surveillance, refugees or migrants moving across national borders, or artists claiming their rights to public space) the book also aims to contribute to ongoing academic and societal debates in our increasingly mediatized world.

    Abstract [en]

We argue that home proper is tourism’s uncanny. Questions of home do not take centre stage in the discipline. Of course second homes have been explored in tourism studies. However, home proper has not been a subject worthy of philosophical/theoretical deliberations, analytical or methodological debates. Strange as it may seem, the discipline is home-less.

    Performing the "Post-Secular" in Santiago de Compostela2016Ingår i: Annals of Tourism Research, ISSN 0160-7383, E-ISSN 1873-7722, Vol. 57, s. 18-30Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Current debates on and theorizations of (post)secularism lack sustained discussions of the role of pilgrimage tourism, spiritual journeys and sacred places. This article is a theoretically informed and empirically based study that explores contemporary pilgrimage tourism as an arena where ‘post-secular’ praxis and discourse fuse. It identifies the multiple ways in which the ‘post-secular’ is performed through pilgrimage tourism, viz. construction of identities, journeys of becoming and performativity as instances of mobile place making. Contemporary pilgrimage tourism to Santiago de Compostela is polyvalent. Pilgrimages cannot be read off as unambiguously religious, secular or post-secular. Pilgrimage tourism spaces are open-ended such that place identity and meaning are being continuously reworked.

    Abstract [en]

Post-secular constructions of space and re-configurations of traditional sacred places are examined inspired by de Certeau’s conceptual quadrant of space, place, strategy and tactics. De Certeau’s theorization enables us to draw out the subversive or disruptive spatial practices of post-secular pilgrimages as instances of pedestrian rhetorics, pilgrimage as a space of enunciations and as the double other of both secular and sacred terrains, as well as ‘proper' practices. The article is based on interviews conducted on and off-season with pilgrims in the region of Galicia (Santiago de Compostela and Fisterra). Beyond an intervention in the geography of religion, this paper is also a contribution to the post-secular debate, post-secular geographies and the blurring of the boundaries between the secular and the sacred elicited by philosophers and social scientists.

    The Post-secular Tourist: Re-thinking Pilgrimage Tourism2018Ingår i: Tourist Studies, ISSN 1468-7976, E-ISSN 1741-3206, Vol. 18, nr 2, s. 159-176Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The coming of post-secular society has opened up interesting transdisciplinary research and perspectives. Research and academic debates on the post-secular have yet to make inroads into the discipline of tourism studies, which is ironic since there is an intrinsic religiosity to tourism. We table that tourism lies at the core of the post-secular turn and should be studied as such. Likewise, academic debate on post-secularism has not accorded tourism its proper due. This study has two objectives. First, to fill the research gap in studies of tourism and post-secularism and, second, to show that post-secular tourism is one of the key spaces where the post-secular is articulated. This article is based on interviews of pilgrims in the Galicia region (Spain) conducted in 2011, 2012 and 2014. Four major attributes of post-secular tourism were identified: (self-)reflexivity, quest for ontological security, heterodoxy and topos-disloyalty. Our findings indicate that the post-secular tourist transcends conventional dichotomies between religious pilgrimage and tourism, journeying as affirmation of denominational faith and pure leisure. Post-secular tourism is about ontogenesis, that is, it is performative rather than injunctive. It is in this sense that one can speak of post-secular tourism as something open, unfolding and in constant becoming.

What space for female subjectivity in the post-secular?2019Ingår i: Theory, Culture and Society. Explorations in Critical Social Science, ISSN 0263-2764, E-ISSN 1460-3616, Vol. 36, nr 7-8, s. 173-192, artikel-id UNSP 0263276419873127Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article heeds previous calls for revitalized feminist accounts of gender and religion. Having identified post-secular female pilgrimages as practices that actuate a 'third space', we claim that it is a space that cannot be adequately theorized from within secular feminist perspectives and attendant conceptions of subjectivity, agency and autonomy. Nor do perspectives from religious studies and its conceptions of piety as expressions of subjectivity, agency and autonomy do justice to the spatialities and subjectivities of post-secular female pilgrims. The article aligns itself with the budding field of critical feminist studies of post-secularism. We argue that, in general, both the protagonists and the detractors of post-secularism fail to recognize feminist theorizations of religion, the post-secular debate in feminist studies, and the place and role of women in the emergence of the post-secular. Whence, our neologism post-sexularism.

The Politics of Fear, Mobility, and Media Discourses: A Case Study of Malmö2015Ingår i: Transfers, ISSN 2045-4813, E-ISSN 2045-4821, Vol. 5, nr 1, s. 7-27Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This study focuses on Seved, a segregated and socioeconomically “poor” neighborhood in the city of Malmö in Sweden. It has attracted wide media coverage, a possible consequence of which is its increased stigmatization. The wide disparity between perceived or imagined fear and the actual incidence of, or exposure to, violence attests to the important role of the media in shaping mental maps and place images. Critical discourse analysis of daily newspaper articles shows that Seved is predominantly construed as unruly and a place of lawlessness. Mobility comprises an important aspect of the stigmatization of places, the politics of fear, and discourses of the “other.” In turn, place stigmatization, discourses of the other, and the politics of fear directly and indirectly affect mobility strategies of individuals and groups.

Everyday Life Mobilities of Older Persons: A Case Study of Ageing in a Suburban Landscape in Sweden2015Ingår i: Mobilities, ISSN 1745-0101, E-ISSN 1745-011X, Vol. 10, nr 3, s. 383-401Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper describes the changing everyday life mobility of an older couple living in a suburb in Sweden. The methods used are longitudinal interviews and time-geographical diaries. The results show a pronounced dependence on car use. Representations of suburbia – as places of freedom, independence and mobility enabled by private cars – devolve into a harsh reality, i.e. disabling lock-in effects for people gradually losing locomotion, and experiencing diminishing mobility capital and social intercourse. From a time-geographical perspective, capability constraints unfold in the form of time-demanding basic needs and limited access to different modes of transport due to deteriorating health and location of residence. Increased neighbourhood barriers and authority constraints also imply restricted access to different spaces and reduced control over one’s life situation.

    Abstract [en]

Revolution and the Critique of Human Geography. Prospects for the Right to the City After 50 Years’ is the paper that Don Mitchell read for the plenary lecture at the 7th Nordic Geographic Meet, held in Stockholm in June 2017. The paper was the Geografiska Annaler B Lecture, at the invi- tation Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography and the conference organizers.

Proceeding from the premise that ‘revolution is a geographical act’, Mitchell relies on two key revolutionary thinkers cum protagonists to convey the profoundly spatial nature of revolution. The first, Henri Lefebvre is a well-known thinker in geographical circles not least through his oft- cited 1967 text The Right to The City, with the likes of David Harvey, Edward Soja, Neil Smith, Andy Merrifield, Bob Shields, Neil Brenner and Stuart Elden, and of course Don Mitchell himself, as interlocutors. The second protagonist, Guy Debord is a significant thinker in his own right, Lefebvre’s former student and political antagonist, well known in Marxian, media, film and cultural theory, but not so well known in geographical circles. Debord’s book The Society of the Spectacle (1995) is a pioneer work on commodified life, culture and power in the contemporary (Merrifield 2004). It is only apposite then that Mitchell grants Debord more space (15 entries on The Society of the Spectacle compared to the 4 or 5 entries on the Right to the City) in his deliberations on revo- lution. Even with the numbered format (reminiscent of Debord’s numbered Theses), one can discern an introduction, corpus and a coda. In what follows, I present my take on Don Mitchell’s lecture/ paper by focusing on two themes. The first revolves around issues of time and history, the second is parallel readings of Debord-Mitchell on questions of space, revolution and the critique of human geography. I wind up by offering an alternative take on revolution and the critique of human geography.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The present article offers a trenchant criticism of the imaginative geographies of 'Europe' using a Pred inspired methodology. The essay strikes at the mythos of Europa as the vanguard of humanity, and enumerates many of the 'dirty tricks' that project the singular as confirmation of the universal. It aligns with the critique of the present in the manner of Allan Pred's critical takes on Europe and deconstruction of the mythos of Europe. With Nietzsche's takes on 'philosophical laughter' as a cue, the essay offers playful parodies on the narcissistic discourses of Europe's historical mission or purpose, its essence/identity, and its place in history. My critique is thus an instance of postcolonial laughter. Critique of historicism and 'European reason' are recurrent themes in Pred's work. Historicism places European humanity as history's prime (favourite) subject, culminating in the infamous yet pompous 'end of history' thesis popularized by Fukuyama, of which Pred was highly critical of. In my reading, Pred's playful takes on Fukuyama's folly, are inspired by postcolonial laughter. Postcolonial laughter is deployed here as an affirmative response to the European negation of the other's being. I use by turn satire and irony, by turn parody and the grotesque to strike at the heart of the mythos of Europe and its 'dirty tricks'. Postcolonial laughter unsettles the hubris and narcissism underlying discourses of Europe's mission/moralism as the vanguard of humanity. Postcolonial laughter is attuned to Pred's 'restless geographies'.

    Abstract [en]

The paper discusses tourism as a world order. It takes its theoretical cues from the works of Carl Schmitt and Deleuze/Gauttari. Tourism is conceptiualized as a Nomos involving three interrelated aspects/processes. Namely, nehmen – the conquest of territory/space under the sign of tourism; teilen - establishing a touristifed spatial, juridical and embodied order in the service of tourism; and weiden – exploiting (utilizing) bodies, spaces and territories to enhance touristic worth/value. As such, tourism is a de- and reterritorialization force and process. The paper conceptualiazes tourism as one aspect of the global capitalist mobility apparatus (machine). The global mobility apparatus (machine) is central to the production and consumtion of desires and spaces of tourism. It channels and orders touristic mobilities, the circulation of images and imaginations at various spatial scales.

    Abstract [en]

In this paper we focus on the consequences of economies and cultures of speculation in the field of education. Education is one of the arenas where the logics of speculation are being played out. It is argued that the major shifts in educational policy over the past decades in Sweden derive from what Ian Baucom aptly called ‘speculative epistemologies’. The field of education is contemporaneous with the wider recasting of society, economy, politics and culture that is premised on the neo-liberal calculus of accumulation and value maximization.

In this context, education could be understood in terms of speculative pedagogy. Speculative pedagogy stands for education that strives to both capitalize knowledge, schooling or learning and realize immediate returns from knowledge, schooling and learning. Speculative pedagogy is used here as an umbrella concept to denote profit driven education and the various educational philosophies, theories and practices in education that are based on notion of valorization, capitalization and immediate returns to education, such that the primary role ofeducation is reduced to augmenting marketable value (personal, economic, aesthetic, national, etc.).

Tunisia & Egypt 2011. Australia 2011. Haiti 2010. Iceland 2010. Lebanon 2006. New Orleans 2005. Thailand 2004. New York 2001. Memorable dates, striking political events and tragic images amplified via ICTs and new media, circulate globally. Tourism mobilities are intimately bound up with multiple processes of time-space compression, shrinking real and imagined spaces of a global “risk society”. The aim of this study is to analyze the role of social (new) media in disaster situations in conjunction with tourist mobilities. The article sheds light on the changing geographies of tourism, illustrated by three interrelated ‘scapes’; risk-scapes, media-scapes and mobility-scapes. Critical theory and power geometries of space guide the theoretical perspectives of the study.        Tourism is often perceived as a risk free pursuit, recreation and enjoyment. Yet, tourists are increasingly being caught in the swirl of political events and disasters. At the same time, tourist mobilities produce and spread risks. Social media play a key role in the mediatization of spaces, everyday lives, social relations and geographical imaginations. New media are producers and consumers of information, not least in communicating risks, problems and images of destinations and tourism. As such, social media are crucial in risk reduction or minimization strategies. Mobility-scapes denote the complex globalized and interlocking spaces that assemble and channel movements and flows of people, goods and information, which affect the (re)distribution and impact of social/natural risks and disasters.

    Abstract

    Abstract

Education is one of the arenas where the logics of speculation are being played out. Disciplinary technologies in education are molded by what we call speculative pedagogies. Entrepreneurship, employability and lifelong learning form key aspects of speculative pedagogies. As disciplinary technologies in education, the task of speculative pedagogies is to (re)mould individuals into calculating, risk-taking and maximizing subjects gamblers or docile and risk-taking subjects that live and act in accordance to the rules of the game. In what follows, we rely on recent developments in Swedish educational policy, to discuss the rise of speculative regimes in education.

A major task of speculative pedagogies is to foster speculative subjects attuned to the demands of accumulation by speculation on a global scale. Changes in educational policy over the last two decades in Sweden have transformed education into an arena where politics and pedagogies of speculation come into play whose primary objective is to promote ways of being and thinking, foster values and ideals based on the speculative logics of financial capitalism
