A Look Behind Conceptual Modeling Constructs in Information System Analysis and Design2010Ingår i: International Journal of Information System Modeling and Design, ISSN 1947-8186, E-ISSN 1947-8194, Vol. 1, nr 1, s. 79-108Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Information systems can be conceptualized in a number of ways. Most methodologies propose to analyze separately process and data semantics by projecting them into totally different diagram types. This system analysis and design tradition is very strong in most modeling approaches such as structured analysis as well as object-oriented design. Structural and behavioral aspects are complementary. They cannot be analyzed in isolation. Lack of a conceptual modeling approach, which can be used for verification of semantic integrity among various types of diagrams, is the cornerstone of frustration for information system architects. Inconsistency, incompleteness and ambiguity of conceptual views create difficulties in verification and validation of technical system architectures by business experts, who determine the organizational strategies. Consequently, the traditional information system methodologies are not able to bridge a communication gap among business experts and IT-system designers. Various interpretations of semantic relations in conceptual modeling approaches make the system analysis and design process more art than science. It creates difficulties to formulate comprehensible principles of decomposition and separation of concerns. Unambiguous definition of aggregation and generalization is necessary for breaking down information system functionality into coherent non-over¬lapping components. This paper concentrates on conceptual modeling enhancements, which help to avoid semantic integrity problems in conceptualizations on various levels of abstraction. The presented conceptual modeling approach is based on a single type of diagram, which can be used for reasoning on semantic integrity between business process and data across organizational and technical system boundaries.

    Abstract [en]

Business process analysis using the coherence concept: an example from a forest industry case2001Ingår i: On Methods for Systems Development in Professional Organisations: The Karlstad University Approach to Information Systems and its Role in Society / [ed] Nilsson, AG & Pettersson, JS, Lund: Studentlitteratur , 2001, s. 284-306Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The main result of this chapter is an integrated framework of enterprise modelling and its coherence analysis. In a coherence analysis we investigate the relationship between system communication flows and internal state changes. The framework focuses on the modelling of static and behavioural aspects, where several actors co-operate to achieve their goals. Integration of various dependencies lies in the foreground of the suggested enterprise modelling approach. In this approach, we can show how to bring together static and dynamic diagrams of processes and to combine insights from the point of view of different goals. The ultimate goal is to introduce new principles for integration of various approaches in information system analysis. These principles are useful to check coherence of semantic diagrams. The presented framework is illustrated by examples from a case study in the forest industry

    Abstract [en]

The focus of this paper is on the modelling primitives which are not only taking into account semantic models of traditional approaches for information system development, but also put a communication aspect into the foreground of system analysis. Integration of static, dynamic and non-traditional communication dependencies is considered as a most important feature of the suggested framework. In this paper is presented an integrated set of the basic semantic modelling primitives that is adequate to analyse the static and dynamic aspects of business processes. It is useful for the purpose of understanding and reasoning about information systems at the enterprise modelling level

    Abstract [en]

The concept of service is comprehensible in various domains and it can be used for integrated modeling of business process and business data. Service-oriented modeling approach, which is presented in this paper, is based on a single type of diagram. It helps to reason about semantic integrity of different modeling dimensions across organizational and technical system boundaries. A well-known case study is analyzed to demonstrate how service interactions among enterprise organizational components can be represented for detecting the essential similarities and differences of business processes. The ultimate goal of this paper is to overview deficiencies of conventional modeling approaches and to present generic principles for computation neutral modeling of service architectures. Conceptual models of service interactions between organizational and technical components enable separation of crosscutting concerns in enterprise engineering without requirement to specify a complete solution. However, most information system methodologies are projecting the structural, interactive and behavioral aspects into totally different modeling dimensions. If service architectures are represented as loose collection of models, it is difficult to detect integrity problems of various diagrams

Defining visions in context: Models, processes and tools for requirements engineering1996Ingår i: Information Systems, ISSN 0306-4379, Vol. 21, nr 6, s. 515-547Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Requirements Engineering is an ill-defined, but growing area of research which addresses a critical problem, that of designing the right thing. This paper reports research on the ESPRIT project NATURE (Novel Theories Underlying Requirements Engineering). A framework for RE research is introduced which covers overall conceptions of the modelling and process views of requirements engineering. Within this framework, current modelling techniques can be reused but are augmented by generic models supporting the reuse of domain knowledge for requirements analysis and validation, and by an enterprise modelling structure emphasising the role of user objectives in requirements engineering. The basic understanding of RE as establishing visions in context leads into the NATURE process model that formalises RE activities as freely composable process chunks linked to contexts. The process model is then used to develop roadmaps of pathways for RE activities within the enterprise model structure. This structure also requires a broader definition of viewpoints and their resolution in the RE process. The last part of the paper presents the NATURE Computer Aided Requirements Engineering (CARE) environment, integrated via the ConceptBase repository. It comprises tools for viewpoint and repository management, process guidance, traceability support, and matching tools for reuse, viewpoint integration and validation using similarity and analogical reasoning mechanisms. The tools section also reports critiquing and validation facilities, and schema integration tools. The paper concludes with a review of related work in conceptual modelling and other aspects of Requirements Engineering.

    Abstract [en]

Conceptual modeling is an essential part of enterprise engineering activity. Unfortunately, enterprise modeling methods are projecting interactive, behavioral and structural dimensions of conceptualizations into totally different diagram types. If static and dynamic aspects are analyzed separately, they are more difficult to visualize and to understand for stakeholders. Moreover, in the traditional approaches, there is a paradigmatic mismatch among different enter-prise architecture modeling dimensions. Analysis of interplay among interactions, state changes and object creation/termination effects is necessary for un-derstanding integrity problems of conceptualizations. The goal of this paper is to present a modeling approach for semantic integration of static and dynamic views of conceptual models. The presented modeling method can be used for separation of crosscutting concerns of computation neutral specifications

    Abstract [en]

Most information systems development methodologies are based on conceptual modeling of static and dynamic views, which are represented by totally different types of diagrams. Understanding of the interplay among interactive, behavioral and structural aspects of specifications is necessary for identification of semantic integrity problems between business process and business data. Typically, semantic inconsistencies and discontinuities between collections of conceptual representations are not easy to detect and to comprehend for information system designers due to static and dynamic aspects of models being visualized in isolation. The goal of this paper is to present a modeling approach for semantic integration and evolution of static and dynamic aspects of conceptual models. Visualization of interplay among structural, interactive and behavioral aspects of computation-neutral representations helps to understand crosscutting concerns and integrity problems of information system conceptualizations. The main advantage of the presented conceptual modeling approach is stability and flexibility of diagrams in dealing with the evolutionary changes of requirements. Therefore, the developed modeling foundation is targeted to both business managers and information system designers for the purpose of computation-neutral integration and evolution of information systems specifications.

    Abstract [en]

Most conventional conceptual modeling approaches are not putting into a foreground interaction dependencies between actors. This is one of the main reasons why it is difficult to apply them for managing complexity of conceptual representations. The goal of this paper is to present conceptual modeling method, which allows constructing graphical representations of scenarios with a more comprehensible structure. Using simple interaction loops between organizational and technical components help designers to separate crosscutting concerns in system engineering without the requirement to specify a complete solution. The examples of sequential, iterative, parallel and alternative behavior are analyzed to demonstrate conceptual descriptions of use-case scenarios. The overlaying and underlying interaction loops among actors are easier to understand, extend and maintain.

    Abstract [en]

Abstract. Modelling method, which is defined by simple interaction loops between organizational and technical components can be viewed as fundamental elements for decomposition of complex business scenarios. This is important for separation of crosscutting concerns. The paper proposes a new graphical method that allows limited human mind to focus and to visualize one particular concern at a time. It also suggests design principles for the semantic integration of business and software scenarios. Separation of crosscutting concerns is performed on a basis of the standard transaction pattern. The presented modelling method can be used for introducing the evolutionary changes of requirements. This is important for managing complexity of information systems conceptualizations, especially when new changes are introduced.  It targets both business process modelling experts and information system designers. The ultimate goal of the new method is to construct and visualize business scenarios with a more comprehensible structure.

Service-Oriented Foundation and Analysis Patterns for Conceptual Modeling of Information Systems2009Ingår i: Information Systems Development: Challenges in Practice, Theory, and Education. Abstract [en]

Everyday companies are inventing new configurations of service architectures, which prescribe and motivate information system design. Information system architectures are intrinsically complex engineering products that can be defined on different levels of abstrac-tion and represented by using various dimensions. Designers are building them fragment by fragment but when the design is complete, then typically the business and technical compo-nents do not fit each other. The attempt to maintain the relevance of each specification frag-ment across disparate dimensions is very expensive and time consuming. The notion of service is not used explicitly in traditional information system engineering methods, which cover just a part of required modelling notations that are currently emerging under the service - oriented analysis and design approaches. The most fascinating idea about the service concept is that it applies equally well to organizational as well as technical components, which can be viewed as service requestors and service providers. The primary goal of service oriented architecture is to align the business process models with the information system design in order to make both organizational and technical system parts more effective. One of the reasons why the traditional methods do not provide effective support for engineering of information systems is that service architectures are difficult to visualize and comprehend for business experts who determine the organizational strategies. The main goal of this paper is to present a new ser-vice-oriented foundation and the associated analysis patterns for computation neutral informa-tion system modelling. A service concept integrates various information system dimensions of static and dynamic aspects into one modelling notation

Three Conceptual Modeling Patterns of Semantically Integrated Method2014Ingår i: BUSTECH 2014, The Fourth International Conference on Business Intelligence and Technology, IARIA , 2014Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

System modeling patterns are similar to workflow patterns, which were established with the purpose of delineating the requirements that arise during business process modeling on a recurring basis. Traditionally, only dynamic aspects are used for specification of modeling patterns leaving aside the static aspects of business processes. The paper presents three conceptual modeling patterns where integrity of totally different aspects can be analyzed. The advantage of such a modeling approach is that it enables visualization and integration of different modeling dimensions of information system specifications in a single diagram. Many graphical representations do not allow such a visualization and an integration of static and dynamic aspects.

    Abstract [en]

Information system methodologies project different modelling aspects into disparate dimensions and it creates difficulties to achieve integrity in various diagram types. Concepts cannot be analysed in isolation from interactions and state changes, which is the case in current traditional system development methods. The lack of an integrated graphical modelling approach creates problems in rethinking and changing business processes. In this chapter, we present Semantically Integrated Conceptual Modeling (SICM) method and demonstrate how the method can be applied for business process re-engineering. A well-known case study is analyzed to demonstrate how service interactions among enterprise organizational components can be represented to detect the essential similarities and differences of business processes. Service architecture is graphically described in terms of interactions among organizational and technical enterprise system components. One of the advantages of SICM method is based on a single type of diagram, which represents interactive, transitional and the structural aspects of concepts. State changes result from processes that are represented by creation and termination events of various concepts.

Conceptual Modeling Method for Separation of Concerns and Integration of Structure and Behavior2012Ingår i: International Journal of Information System Modeling and Design, ISSN 1947-8186, E-ISSN 1947-8194, Vol. 3, nr 1, s. 48-77Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Identification of discontinuities, separation of concerns and dealing with the evolutionary changes of requirements is difficult in conceptual modeling. Another restriction is that a limited human mind allows focusing on one particular requirement at a time in isolation. One fundamental problem is that all conventional conceptual modeling techniques are dealing with collections of loosely linked meta-models, which are defined by the different types of diagrams. Typically, system development methods project interactive, behavioral and structural aspects of information systems’ conceptual representations into disparate views. Therefore, the semantic integrity of various architecture dimensions is difficult to achieve. The difficulties are stemming from the paradigmatic mismatch between static and dynamic constructs. The advantage of the conceptual modeling approach presented in this paper is flexibility in dealing with the evolutionary changes of requirements. Visualization of interplay among structural, interactive and behavioral aspects helps to separate different concerns and to identify discontinuities of conceptual representations. It is demonstrated by case study examples that sequential, underlying, enclosing, overriding and overlaying interaction loops between actors provide the foundation for the composition of complex scenarios, which span across organizational and technical system boundaries. The presented semantic integration and system decomposition principles target both business process modeling experts and information system designers, because they are essential for introducing evolutionary changes and for managing complexity of information system conceptualizations.

Conceptual Modeling Patterns of Business Processes2014Ingår i: International Journal on Advances in Intelligent Systems, ISSN 1942-2679, E-ISSN 1942-2679, Vol. 7, nr 4, s. 716-727Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

System modeling patterns are similar to workflow patterns, which were established with the purpose of delineating the requirements that arise during business process modeling on a recurring basis. Traditionally, only dynamic aspects are used for the specification of modeling patterns leaving aside the static aspects of business processes. The paper presents the conceptual modeling patterns where integrity of totally different aspects can be analyzed. The advantage of such a modeling approach is that it enables visualization and integration of different modeling dimensions of information system specifications using a single diagram. Many graphical representations do not allow such visualization and integration of static and dynamic aspects. We also represent graphically interpretation of the conversation for action schema by constructs of our semantically integrated conceptual modeling method.

Holistic Approach for Representation of Interaction Scenarios in Semantically Integrated Conceptual Modelling2022Ingår i: Communications in Computer and Information Science, Springer, 2022, Vol. 1665, s. 183-196Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

One of the problems with conventional conceptual modelling methods is that they do not take into account certain important semantic interdependency types between the static and dynamic aspects. Integrity of dimensions is crucial for successful reasoning and solving problems that occur in conceptual modelling. Typically, conceptual modelling methods project various aspects of information systems using different graphical representations. Therefore, to reach semantic integration of various architectural aspects is very difficult. This paper presents semantically integrated conceptual modelling method. This method enables stability and flexibility of the diagrams that are very important for managing constant changes of organizational and technical requirements. It shows how alternative actions introduced into different scenarios. This is also important for controlling semantic integrity and for maintaining holistic representations of different aspects. Holistic modelling approach enables reasoning about system architecture across organizational and technical system boundaries. On a simple hotel reservation system scenario, it is demonstrated how different actions can be decomposed into more primitive underlying interaction loops. Integrated conceptual modelling method is important for evaluation of expressive power of conceptual modelling languages. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Interactions, Transitions and Inference Rules in Semantically Integrated Conceptual Modelling2016Ingår i: Proceedings of the Sixth International Symposium on Business Modeling and Software Design, Bulgaria: SciTePress, 2016, s. 11-21Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

To obtain value from the graphical representations that are used by different stakeholders during the system development process, they must be integrated. This is important to achieve a holistic understanding about system specification. Integration can be reached via modelling process. Currently, most of information system modelling methods present different modelling aspects in disparate modelling dimensions and therefore it is difficult to achieve semantic integrity of various diagrams. In this paper, we present semantically integrated conceptual modelling method for information system analysis and design. The foundation of this modelling method is based on interactions. This way of modelling provides possibility of integration of business processes and business data. The inference rules of interactions help in reasoning about the decomposition of concepts. In this method, decomposition of the system is graphically described as classification, inheritance or composition of organizational and technical system components.
