Alla lär sig något? - Teori möter praktiskt yrkeskunnande2014In: KAPET, ISSN 1653-4743, Vol. 10, no 1, p. 74-89Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract

Culture meets culture at a distance2015In: Knowledge for a sustainable world: A southern African–Nordic contribution / [ed] Halvorsen, Tor; Ibsen, Hilde; M’kumbuzi, Vyvienne RP, Cape Town, South Africa: African Minds, 2015, p. 183-194Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The chapter describes a project with a distance-learning course in social gerontology given by Karlstad University in Sweden for students at the University of Namibia. The aim of the project was to see how a well-established concept in Swedish education (written study plans), in combination with theories of social gerontology developed for an American context, would translate into a Namibian context with students working in elderly care in Namibia. Our interest was in how different cultures can interact and contribute to a wider understanding of elderly people and their life situations, using social gerontology theory as a basis for discussion. The idea of learning through juxtaposing three cultures (Swedish teachers, Namibian students and American theories) seems to have worked well. The differences provoked thinking, and forced both teachers and students to examine their own assumptions and understandings of their own cultures and the situation of elderly people, in relation to other cultures. Judging from this experience, cross-cultural teaching and learning widens horizons and promotes learning for all those involved.

Empowerment makes partners and co-operators?2010In: JARID: Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities, ISSN 1360-2322, E-ISSN 1468-3148, Vol. 23, no 5, p. 453-453Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Aim: To examine how acting in a research-circle could empower people with ID.Method: For 15 years, using a co-research paradigm, six people with ID workwith me as partners and co-operators to develop focal questions from their everyday lives. We gather, act, interpret and present the data together. On their behalf, I will present some of their research-questions and some of the results ofour interviews and first-hand experiences. Results: The results showed that these six people, one man and five women, working together with me as a researcher, had important research questions about their everyday life experiences. They, for example, have experienced phenomena such as being between worlds. The research method has empowered them to a greater knowledge about society. This research also showed that professional social care workers sometimes help improve life conditions. But sometimes, factors that should empower people with ID are misused. Conclusion: To work with user participation in this kind way as a practical social care worker is possible. This empowerment philosophy requires attention to both staff and researcher intentions, their action and follow through over time.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Aim: Fifteen years ago an ongoing research-circle was started. We are five women and one man with learning difficulties, 30-67 years old, working with a researcher. This work is based on a wish that people with learning diffi culties have to learn about and become "visible" in society. Method: This research-circle uses the participatory action research approach, both to make the co-participants themselves "visible" in society and to learn about society. Results: The six participants have reached their goal of being "visible" – they are empowered. They say they feel good. They are known today in their society as Alobis. Conclusions: It takes good will, time and effort, but is possible for people with learning diffi culties to make a change, both for themselves and others in same situation.
