    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The article is a discussion of some of the feminist attempts to transcend certain of the problems related to the idea of equality and the visions which surround it. Concepts such as equality, sameness and difference and the relationship between them are central to such a discussion. The article begins with a consideration of whether women and men are fundamentally the same or if they are two different kinds. The discussion is then extended to include a wider definition of the concept of difference, since the concept complicates the issue in that it concerns not only differences between the sexes but also those within them. In its turn, this leads to a consideration of the importance of an ontologically based feminist analysis for a greater understanding of the relationship between the sexes and for emancipatory potentials

Otillräcklighet – den passionerade exploateringens bittra eftersmak2012In: Arbetsliv i omvandling, ISSN 1404-8426, no 3, p. 106-121Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Segregerad integrering: Mönster av könssegregering i arbetslivet2004Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

The future matter matters: Disasters as a (potential) vehicle for social change - It is about time2019In: Disaster upon Disaster: Exploring the Gap Between Knowledge, Policy and Practice / [ed] S. M. Hoffman & R. E. Barrios, New York: Berghahn Books, 2019, 1, p. 356-377Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The chapter is a theoretical discussion about disasters and vulnerability in relation to time, and predominantly in relation to the future. It is critically scrutinizing disaster management strategies and the organization of recovery work by shedding light over (power) relations between rescuers and victims and between local knowledge and expert knowledge. In doing so, the chapter suggests alternative ways of how to gain knowledge trough participation. By exceeding the notions of recovery and resilience using concepts as utopia and dystopia the chapter is a gentle reminder of that we are responsible for a future that is not ours – but “theirs”.

Employee Availability for Work and Family: Three Swedish Case Studies2007In: Employee relations, ISSN 0142-5455, E-ISSN 1758-7069, Vol. 29, no 4, p. 400-414Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this article is to explore the concept of availability, both empirically and theoretically, in the context of three Swedish organisations, and identifies the structural influences on availability patterns for work and family. Design/methodology/approach - The article is based on quantitative case studies using employer records and an employee questionnaire in three organisations. Multivariate descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression are used to illustrate and analyse patterns of availability for work and family. Findings - The descriptive data demonstrate the influence of the organisational context and type of production process, as well as gender, on availability patterns. Patterns of work availability appeared to differ across the organisations to a greater extent than patterns of family availability, which were highly gendered. The logistic regression results indicated that: occupation was a significant influence on both temporal and spatial availability patterns across the organisations; gender was the most significant influence on time spent on household work and part-time working for parents with young children; age of employees and age of employees' children were the most significant factors influencing the use of time off work for family. Research limitations/implications - Analysis limited to case studies. More extensive quantitative research would be needed to make empirical generalisations. Qualitative research would be needed to establish whether and how employees are able to make use of different availability patterns to improve their work-life balance. Originality/value - The concept of availability is a new way of trying to capture and analyse tensions in people's everyday lives as they try to manage multiple demands.

The Cabin Crew Blues: Middle-aged Cabin Attendants and Their Working Conditions2015In: Nordic Journal of Working Life Studies, E-ISSN 2245-0157, Vol. 5, no 4, p. 23-39Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines how an airline company uses the labor of a group of middle-aged cabin attendants in an industry increasingly characterized by deregulation and competiveness. The study was based on in-depth interviews with seven women, all with between 24 and 30 years of work experience as cabin attendants. The article focuses on the women's working conditions and well-being and the analysis reveals three key aspects-intensification of work, vulnerability, and aging-that affect the cabin attendants' experiences and emotions in relation to the work. It is at the intersection of these three aspects that the cabin attendants' concerns must be understood. The study's findings indicated that positive emotions such as job satisfaction and commitment have diminished because of exploitative and otherwise poor working conditions. Taking the cabin attendants' concerns as its point of departure, the article shows that there is a need to move away from a discussion about emotional labor toward a discussion of working conditions.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

"There is no future for oldies": Sensing dignity and alienation in the cabin2019In: Work Orientations: Theoretical Perspectives and Empirical Findings / [ed] B. Furåker & K. Håkansson, London: Routledge, 2019, 1, p. 165-192Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Female cabin attendants who have been in the occupation for 25 years or more have been interviewed. They were middle-aged, middle-class women, and they told about the decline of working conditions and the work environment during that time. The point of departure is in the interviews and the literature; from there, the chapter constructs a ‘Dignity–Alienation Model’ in order to interpret the interviewees’ narratives. It is built up by continua for a number of dimensions of dignity and alienation. They are Autonomy–Powerlessness, Meaningful work–Meaningless work, Flourishing–Self-estrangement, Respect–Disrespect, and High work-life quality–Low work-life quality. In all dimensions, there has been a clear movement from subjective dignity towards subjective alienation, although the strength of this development varies. It is shown that working conditions and work environment are causal mechanisms bringing about feelings that are relevant for the alterations in the dimensions of the model. Changes in work from good to bad cause a movement from a sense of dignity to one of alienation, which indicates a drastic downturn in both job satisfaction and organizational commitment.
