Ett arbete är ett arbete: -        En kvalitativ studie om vad som motiverar Generation Y2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Health has become increasingly important in the community and has been taken into the labour market to a greater extent. Organizations are trying to keep up with the development of health in the society and working strategically to promote employee health through a variety of fitness activities. The community is contributing to a new vision of the individual where the aesthetic appearance is of growing importance. The employers are trying to keep up with this development and provide an increasing range of fitness activities and from this expect high performing employees. The health promotion today is more about maintaining good looks than previously, where focus was to combat disease. The various health promotion activities are performed on the employee's time off, which means that it will be yet more difficult to distinguish between work and leisure. Not all of the employees will take part in health activities, offered by the company, because of interest, family situation and more. This could lead to that groupings occur to categorize the employees of the "good" and the "bad". One natural question to ask is can this contribute to stress and higher pressure amongst workers? And furthermore can it even cause illness?

This study deals with how companies get greater responsibility and interest in employee health and in what way that this is handled. The two main questions analysed are if the concept "health culture" can describe how employees perceive the atmosphere regarding health?  And, how do they experience the promoted health activities? To investigate the experiences of a precise phenomenon a qualitative study through interviews has been carried out. The interviews were conducted at one company, with variation by age, gender and occupation. The primary outcome from the results is that employers work with health promotion activities to reduce costs, reduce sick leave and increase efficiency. The experiences of health promotion were mostly positive but it emerged underlying negative sides. In some cases, it was found that the employees experience stress because they do not want or have the time to participate in the activities offered.

Finally, the concept of health culture was never seen used before. No other term, describing the same property, was found. It is therefore suggested as a concept to describe what is experienced inside an organization regarding common norms, perception and values of health.

    Abstract [sv]

Man har sjungit digitaliseringens lov.: En explorativ studie hur ledning i kommunal sektor beaktar anställdas arbetsmiljö vid implementering av digitala system.2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This Master’s thesis research whether managers in Nacka municipality in Sweden consider their employees’ work environment, when implementing new digital systems. The research is written within the framework of a research project called KomDig. KomDig is an acronym in Swedish for Municipal and Digital. The research aims to increase awareness on the digital work environment. A qualitative method has been conducted, to gain a deeper understanding of how management in the municipal sector considers their employee’s working environment, when implementing new digital technology. Empirical data has been collected from twelve interviews with different managers and security officers at various units and departments within Nacka municipality. Empirical data has also been collected from the municipality´s websites, reports and governments documentation. The first three interviews were conducted through physical meetings, and the last nine where conducted through video calls like Teams or Zoom, due to the restrictions during the Corona pandemic. The theoretical framework evolves around the organizational theory, socio-technical approach as well as implementation theory. These theories have been selected to create an understanding of the importance of an organization’s structure when new digital systems are implemented as well as how new systems are implemented. In order to create an understanding of what is essential to maintain manageability and meaningfulness when work environment is changing, such as increased digitalization, the model KASAM has been utilized. KASAM is used to create a sense of coherence to the change of work environment, The research shows that management takes their employees´ work environment into account when implementing digital systems, however, the result shows that there is differences depending on which units that has been reviewed. There are examples of previous implementations where employees and customers have been negatively affected and where costs have radically increased. The newly introduced departments for digitalization along with new strategies for digitalization indicates that they now are on the right track in the way they are implementing new digital systems. Both management and employees are optimistic to continue the implementation together with the strategy for digitalization the result has created a good understanding for the aspects of importance in future implementations, which is promising for the municipality´s future development. The research also shows that NPM contributed to the municipality’s customer focus, results and effectiveness. It also shows that the municipality follows the trend towards increased digitalization in the public sector, which been advocated by the government.

Dominanser: En utveckling av den realistiska livsformsteorin2009Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The present dissertation develops a specific theory about everyday life called realist life mode theory. This theory is based on critical realism and consists of "work", "love" and "life mode" as central concepts. The background of the theory is the Danish life mode analysis developed by Thomas Højrup in the 1980:s.

The aim of the study is to develop the central clusters of concepts in the realist life mode theory - i. e. "work", "love", "life mode" in a theoretical way. These concepts are seen as clusters since other related concepts are developed in connection to the concepts mentioned above. In connection to work I also discuss the concepts of "labour power", "labour receptor", and "work form"; in relation to love, "love power", "love receptor" and "love form" are discussed. And "life mode" is connected with the concept of "everyday life" in a more exact way than before.

The argument of this study is that realist life mode theory is about two fundamental types of dominance - personal dominance and structural dominance. "Personal dominance" is used synonymously with "ownership". "Structural dominance" is dominance between non-personal, non-conscious entities. Life mode theory is a theory about ownership surrounded by structural dominances both beneath the owning person (sub-personally), and above (socially).

Personal dominance - ownership - is produced via two human and societal processes - work and love. Work is defined as doing and occuring in the sphere of necessity. In work there especially are possibilities for ownership of the material surroundings. Love is defined as doing and occuring in the sphere of freedom. In love humans produce each other as self-owned persons through transaction of love power.

Both work and love has great emancipatory potentials, and this theme is discussed in the present study. But, unfortunately, really existing work and love practices are to a great extent exploitative. Labour power is exploited in capitalism, and love power in patriarchy.

When it comes to structural dominance, this study focuses on the following dominances: The dominance of labour receptor over labour power in men´s working life; the dominance of love power over love receptor in women´s love life. The dominance of work over love in men´s everyday life; the dominance of love over work in women´s everyday life. And on a more social level we find the following dominances: in the male life modes the work form dominates the love form. In female life modes the love form dominates the work form. And finally, in society as a whole male life modes have dominance over female life modes.

When the dominance between social structures is analyzed, a distinction is made between "dominance form" and "the substance of dominance".

    Abstract [en]

This article points out the importance of the concept of freedom in work life studies. Gunnar C. Aakvaag´s typology of freedom is considered as a valuable point of departure in empirical studies. In connection to the introduction of Aakvaag´s ideas, his typology is related to Blauner´s classical study on freedom in the workplace.

Att skapa kunskap: En studie i kunskapsöverföring på en av enheterna på MSB i Karlstad enligt Ikujiro Nonakas och Hirotaka Takeuchis modell2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Segregerad integrering: Mönster av könssegregering i arbetslivet2004Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Classifications of futures research are usually based on epistemological differences, but we complete these with ontological considerations. The article presents a typology of forecasts, i.e. statements on future events or states. It has two dimensions, truth claim and explanatory claim; each dimension has two values, making the claim or not making the claim. The four outcomes are then: Forecasts which make both truth claims and explanatory claims (predictions); which make truth claims, but not explanatory claims (prognoses); which make explanatory claims, but not truth claims (science fiction); and which make neither truth claims nor explanatory claims (utopias or dystopias). We regard each outcome as an ideal type, against which forecasts can be measured. We illustrate the use of the typology by presenting an example of each outcome

Att kämpa mot gamla rykten: En kvalitativ studie om arbetet med employer branding inom offentlig sektor2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The concept of flexibility and its occasional misuse2002Conference paper (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

The focus of this paper is to raise awareness of the complexity of the concept of flexibility and its occasional misuse. Flexibility as it most often is studied, is defined as the point of departure in capitalism. Even the smallest firms are measured by these criterions. By using the methodological standpoint of critical realism and the structural life mode analysis I have studied the rationality behind adjusting to changes in small firms with focus on adjusting employment levels to variation in workload. By doing this I have answered the question of a possible misuse of the concept of flexibility. My conclusion is that the concept of flexibility, defined with a starting point in the capitalist principles of the economic market, is occasionally misused in literature. Taking the point of departure in capitalism it is assumed that all firms strive to live by the rules of a capitalist market and to adjust to its principles. My structural perspective shows that not all small firms are driven by these motives powers. The rationality to run a firm when the owner lives the so-called independent life mode, derive first of all from independency. This rationality influences adjusting to changes in these firms and it also influences relations between an entrepreneur and an employee. An entrepreneurs trust expressing the independent life mode-specific work values and ethics, is fundamentally different from an employees trust if the employee is living the worker life mode. Thus trust can be a hindrance for adjusting the employment levels to variation in workload
