    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this essay a conclusion about the way female characters are portrayed in fantasy novels will be attempted through an analysis of one selected female character from each selected novel. The works that have been chosen are; J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, Robert Jordan’s The Eye of the World and A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin.

The analysis will be done with the help of examples and theories from both feministic criticism and gender studies. During the course of the discussion the background of the fantasy genre and goal of the scientific theories will be explained. The fantasy genre in itself allows its authors a chance to criticize the norms of our society, freed from the restraints of realism. The findings of this essay however, imply that some fantasy authors forsake this chance in order to more accurately emulate the medieval European society or in fact actively reinforce patriarchal norms.

Motivation and English as a foreign language: Motivation among Swedish upper secondary school students2009Student paper other, 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In order to be able to influence the motivation of second language learners one first has to understand what motivation is, what its preconditions are and how to detect it. The research for this essay was done with the help of one hundred and ten students from seven classes in two different upper secondary schools and most of these learners were first year students.

The aim was to find and measure the students' motivation to learn English and how this motivation can be influenced in a positive manner. The method used to collect the necessary data was a questionnaire which asked questions about the relevancy of the English course and how frequently the students used English and how interested they were in the language.

The results give a clear picture of the students' motivational levels as well as to which parts of the English course they respond and to which they do not.

A study of the VAKT learning styles and their importance for Swedish EFL students2009Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This is a paper about Swedish upper secondary students’ awareness of the four learning styles in the acronym VAKT (visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile) and whether they are important for getting a certain grade in English. In my study I investigate learning styles of students of English as a second language at upper secondary school in Sweden. I also investigate the students’ awareness of their own learning style and to what extent they feel that all learning styles are represented in their classrooms. My results show that learning styles are of some importance and should be mentioned in teacher education today. This essay also brings up motivation and a discussion on how the VAKT learning styles and similar learning styles can help students feel motivated in and outside the classroom. There are also results on how students see their own use of English in their future and what their goals with learning English are.

Kultur i språkundervisning - med fokus på engelska2003Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Hur har IT påverkat lärandeprocesser i språk?

    Abstract [sv]

How do I pronounce this word?: Strategies used among Swedish learners of English when pronouncing unfamiliar words2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aimed to identify some of the strategies students used when pronouncing unfamiliar words. Questionnaires were handed out to 94 students in the 9th grade in a medium-sized Swedish town. In addition, two teachers and 13 students were interviewed. The results indicate that the students had acquired some basic knowledge about the English sound system from phonetic training in their past education. However, there seemed to be a tendency among the students to use the trial-and-error strategy to a larger extent than using tools such as phonetic transcription in order to figure out the pronunciation of a word. The results also show that the teachers did not teach planned lessons on pronunciation, but instead it was more common that they responded to errors made by students. In conclusion, the results show that the students' knowledge in pronunciation in general was limited. In addition, there seemed to be a connection between the way the students and the teachers approached pronunciation and the student's ability to solve pronunciation issues.

    Abstract [en]

We read different kind of texts every day. We can for example choose to read a book or to watch a film. While we read we can receive and interpret texts. That’s means, for example, that we can have different envisionments about the drama and the film based on it.

Based on Langer’s reception theory about “envisionments”, I’ve wanted to examine and clarify the differences and similarities of envisionments between two texts. I have mainly examined and focused on Romeo and Juliet as drama and film. My study is comparative and qualitative. The background for my examination is found in “a broader concept of text” as described in School Curriculum – Swedish for upper secondary school, and the research of Olin – Scheller and Johansson.

According to the conclusions in my study we can have varying conceptions of different texts as readers. The result of my study has shown that the interpretation and our envisionments could be different and depends on how the text is narrated. Envisionments in a drama text depend on the images we create without ourselves while reading the text. The drama can also be seen on a theatre and then can our envisionments depend on how it is presented by the theatre actors.  In the film text our envisionments depends on the visualisation, sound and sound effects, colours and perspective of camera etc

    Abstract [en]

According to the curriculum the teachers have a responsibility to adjust the activities in the classroom in order to suit the pupils and to give them the means of assistance the pupils need to be successful in their learning. The teachers should also stimulate the interest to learn and support the pupils’ self esteem. One of the problems a dyslectic pupil faces is an often weak self esteem. Another is the weak phonological awareness which makes it hard to fully understand the context and to recognize different phonemes when writing. Their difficulties in writing results in a resistance to improve their own texts.

The methods of teaching which are said to be positive to pupils with dyslexia are used by the teachers at the reviewed school. They use teacher controlled lessons instead of individual work. They support the pupils with lesson’s notes which the pupil could complete with own words. They use pictures to support the theme of the lesson. They read many texts aloud.

Among the aids that are described as important to the dyslectic pupils are the computer and the programs adjusted to the special needs a dyslectic pupil has. The pupils in the separate class are given a computer, but the use of the supporting programmes is low. The computer is also regarded as a tool to increase one’s self esteem.

Föhrer and Magnusson as well as one of the teachers mean that the computer increase the pupil’s self esteem.

Taube asserts that in order to increase the self esteem the pupil needs to experience a number of concrete successes from one’s own work. The teachers at the reviewed school have some extra hours as a resource to use to support the pupils individually. The fact that the class is small helps the teachers to know the pupil.

Online computer game English: A study on the language found in World of Warcraft2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine the language from a small sample of texts from the chat channels of World of Warcraft and analyze the differences found between World of Warcraft English and Standard English. In addition, the studywill compare the language found in World of Warcraft with language found on other parts of the Internet, especially chatgroups. Based on 1045 recorded chat messages, this study examines the use of abbreviations, emoticons, vocabulary, capitalization, spelling, multiple letter use and the use of rare characters. The results of the investigation show that the language of World of Warcraft differs from Standard English on several aspects, primarily in the use of abbreviations. This is supported by secondary sources. The results also show that the use of language is probably not based on the desire to deliver a message quickly, but rather to reach out to people. In addition, the results show that the language found in World of Warcraft is more advanced than a simple effort to try to imitate speech, thereby performing more than written speech.
