The unique and synergistic effects of social isolation and loneliness on 20-years mortality risks in older men and women2024In: Frontiers in Public Health, E-ISSN 2296-2565, Vol. 12, article id 1432701Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: This study investigates the individual and combined impacts ofloneliness and social isolation on 20-year mortality risks among older men andwomen. Methods: Utilizing data from the Norwegian Life Course, Ageing, and Generationstudy (NorLAG) carried out in 2002, 2007 and 2017, we assessed loneliness viadirect and indirect questions, and social isolation through factors like partnershipstatus and contact frequency with family and friends. Yearly information onmortality was derived from the national registries and was available untilNovember 2022. Gender-stratified Cox regression models adjusted for age andother risk factors were employed. Results: Of the 11,028 unique respondents, 9,952 participants were includedin the study sample, 1,008 (19.8%) women and 1,295 (26.6%) men died. In thefully adjusted models including indirectly assessed loneliness, social isolationincreased the 20-year mortality risk by 16% (HR  =  1.16, 95% CI 1.09–1.24)for women and 15% (HR  =  1.15, 95% CI 1.09–1.21) for men. This effect wasprimarily driven by the absence of a partner and little contact with children forboth genders. Loneliness measured with indirect questions lost its significantassociation with mortality after adjusting for social isolation and other factorsin both genders. However, for men, reporting loneliness via a direct questionwas associated with a higher mortality risk, even in the fully controlled models(HR  =  1.20, 96% CI 1.06–1.36). Interactions between loneliness and socialisolation were not, or only borderline significantly, associated with mortalityrisks in the fully controlled models.Discussion: Social isolation, but not loneliness measured with indirect questionsare associated with a 15–16% higher mortality risk in both men and women. However, loneliness assessed with a direct question is associated with increasedmortality in men, even after controlling for social isolation and other relevantfactors, which might suggest that men may deny loneliness, unless it is (very)severe. These findings emphasize the importance of methodological precisionin the measurement of loneliness and social isolation.

Outbound open innovation in tourism: Lessons from an innovation project in Norway2021In: Managing Open Service Innovation / [ed] A-L Mention ; Tor Helge Aas, World Scientific, 2021, p. 167-185Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The concept of open innovation was introduced by Henry Chesbrough in 2003 and refers to firms' use of inflows and outflows of knowledge to improve innovation processes. The concept has received considerable scholarly attention, but most research has focused on how manufacturing firms can manage inflows of knowledge during their product innovation processes. How outflows of knowledge can be managed by service firms during their innovation processes has until now not received the same scholarly attention. In this chapter, we therefore aim to contribute in filling this knowledge gap by observing an innovation project in tourism during its implementation. The findings suggested that tourism firms reveal different types of knowledge to other tourism firms in non-pecuniary outbound open innovation processes. In this case the knowledge was revealed in joint workshops where several firms participated and in bi-lateral meetings between two firms, and sometimes the knowledge was transferred via consultants or researchers that acted as "knowledge mediators". The findings also suggested that tourism firms decided to reveal knowledge to other firms to improve their image, increase the market size and to sharpen up their own business. Implications for management as well as the need for further research are discussed in the chapter.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to explore the impact of negative life events on identity development through a qualitative systematic literature review and qualitative content analysis. The research seeks to understand how negative life events trigger identity crises and influence self-perception. Method: A systematic search was conducted in the PsycInfo and PubMed databases, resulting in the selection of 12 relevant studies for analysis. Themes were identified through qualitative content analysis to elucidate the effects of negative life events on identity. Results: The analysis revealed that negative life events can lead to both identity challenges and personal growth. The findings underscore the importance of supporting individuals experiencing identity crises for authentic identity development. Conclusion: Understanding the complexities of identity formation in the face of adversity is crucial for providing effective support and interventions. Further research in this area is essential for enhancing our knowledge of how individuals navigate identity development amidst negative life events.

Sexual harassment among employees and students at a large Swedish university: who are exposed, to what, by whom and where – a cross-sectional prevalence study2022In: BMC Public Health, E-ISSN 1471-2458, Vol. 22, no 1, article id 2240Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Sexual harassment (SH) in the workplace is prevalent and associated with poor health. Universities are large workplaces with complex formal and informal power relations, which may influence the prevalence of SH. Although employees and students share the university context, few studies on SH have included both groups. The overall aim of the study was to investigate SH among employees and students at a large Swedish public university regarding types of harassment, prevalence in different groups, characteristics of the perpetrators, and the circumstances in which it occurs. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was performed, based on a web-based survey with 120 items that was sent out to all staff, including PhD students (N = 8,238) and students (N = 30,244) in November 2019. The response rate was 33% for staff and 32% for students. Exposure to SH was defined as having experienced at least one of ten defined SH behaviors during their work or studies. Results: Among women, 24.5% of staff and 26.8% of students reported having been exposed to SH. The corresponding figures were 7.0% and 11.3% for male staff and students and 33.3% and 29.4% for non-binary individuals among staff and students. Unwelcome comments, suggestive looks or gestures, and ‘inadvertent’ brushing or touching were the three most common forms of reported harassment, both among staff and students. Attempted or completed rape had been experienced by 2.1% of female and 0.6% of male students. Male and female perpetrators were reported by about 80% and 15%, respectively, of exposed participants. Among staff most reported events occurred during the everyday operation of the university, while among students the majority of the events took place during social events linked to student life. When exposed to a perpetrator from the same group (staff or students), women reported more often being in a subordinate power position in relation to the perpetrator. Conclusions: The results indicate that sexual harassment is common in the university context, and interventions and case management routines of events should consider power relations between victim and perpetrator, as well as the various contexts within which sexual harassment takes place.

Lärares kunskap om ADHD: Finns det ett samband mellan kunskap, attityder inför och bemötande av elever med diagnosen?2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to map out if there were a relation between teachers knowledge about ADHD and their emotionell attitudes towards students with the diagnosis and to map out if there were a relation between teachers knowledge about ADHD and their choice of strategy used in the classroom to meet students with ADHD. The study was conducted as a survey study among teachers in grade 1 – 9. The teachers where to answear knowledge questions and self-rated questions about emotionell attitude and their choice of strategy. A link to a web survey was emailed to 400 principals in Swedish elementary schools. If the principal approved that the school participated in the survey he/she forwarded the email to the teachers. The survey was a remodeled version of the survey used by Kos (2004). The result of the survey was then processed as six linear regression analysis. The result shows a significant relation between teachers knowledge about ADHD, their emotionell attitude towards students with ADHD and their self-rated choice of strategy.

    Abstract [en]

Aim: The aim of the present study was to investigate the extent to which children investigated for ADHD and/or autism have been exposed to potentially traumatic events (PTE) and developed symptoms of post-traumatic stress or other mental illness. Method: The study was of cross-sectional design. 62 children, 8-17 years old, referred for assessment of ADHD and/or autism at the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (BUP) in Karlstad were included. Descriptive data of exposure to PTE were analyzed and compared against a norm group. Post-traumatic symptoms as well as symptoms of other mental illnesses were examined descriptively and tested for significance. Results: The results showed that the study group had a characteristically high frequency of PTE (type value 5), in particular interpersonal PTE. They generally had a significantly higher degree of symptoms of trauma and other mental illnesses. Many exceeded cut-off values for, for example, post-traumatic symptoms, dissociation, anxiety, depression, hyperactivity and peer problems. An analysis of gender and age differences for post-traumatic symptoms showed generally higher scores for girls than boys and for older children compared with younger. Furthermore, several significant correlations for interpersonal PTE and symptoms associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, anger and dissociation) were obtained. Conclusions: Children and adolescents, assessed for ADHD and/or autism, are a highly exposed group concerning PTE and heavily symptom-laden. It is prominent that interpersonal PTE is extra common, and that particularly girls between the ages of 12-17 scored surprisingly high on post-traumatic symptoms.

Alliansen oss emellan: - en undersökning om huruvida klienters och terapeuters skattningar av allians stämmer överens2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis was to investigate whether clients' and therapists' estimation of alliance match, if there is a correlation between alliance and client satisfaction and if there is a difference between client satisfaction and a standard measure. Statistical analysis and a qualitative thematic analysis were used to examine this. Results show no difference between ratings of an alliance total between clients and therapists, except for when examining the different dimensions. There is a correlation between alliance and client satisfaction ratings. Also, there is a difference between client satisfaction questionnaire-8 (CSQ-8) ratings between the participants and a standard measure. Emerging themes about the change of therapy where: Relational establishing interaction, Relief and non-judgmental. Conclusions where made about the fact that alliance ratings did not differ between client and therapist, as well as the fact that there was a correlation between high ratings of alliance with high ratings of client satisfaction. Finally there was support for the conclusion that student therapy has higher, or at least an equally high ratings of satisfaction as other psychiatric care according to comparisons made with the standard measure. The thematic analysis shows that therapy brought on big changes in the clients life, changes that seem connected. They also show how important it is to have a more personal factor in therapy.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose was to get some insight into how staff experience their work with the unemployed. A Phenomenological method, IPA (Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis), was used to find out. 10 people were interviewed through this method and multiple categories appeared, which give some insight into how they perceive their job; a role, frustration/ambivalence, rewarding work, demands, developing work and commitment. They are people playing a role, an authority. Experiences are also, among other things, that the work is very rewarding, challenging, developing and gives one a chance to make a difference in another person's life. These positive aspects, the meetings with people, participating in their processes, weigh heavier than the negative aspects. These are among other things a larger work-mass than what is bearable, several demands on personality and high demands on legal security and uniformity. If not for the positive aspects they would not have stayed. In conclusion one can say that it is work where they perceive themselves as needed and where they feel like they can evolve and make a difference.

Prerequisites for teaching mindfulness and meditation: Experienced teachers from different traditions share their insights2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study utilizes the method of Thematic Analysis, TA, to research the question: How do mindfulness and meditation teachers’ describe the prerequisites for effective mindfulness and meditation teaching? It aims at providing deeper insight of the importance of the teachers in this field. In the scientific literature there is a lack of evaluation of mindfulness teachers (Grossman et al 2014) and how to teach mindfulness meditation effectively (Shapiro 2009). The interpretations of what twelve experienced teachers, from different traditions, say in the in-depth interviews of this study results in three main themes and nine subthemes: main theme; Teacher qualification with subthemes; Becoming teacher, Being teacher, Pedagogic skills and Social skills, and main theme; Student qualities with subthemes; Positive for learning and Negative aspects to deal with, and main theme; Context with subthemes; Fields of application, Levels and Supporting factors. The results lead to the argument that anyone can assume the role of mindfulness and meditation teacher, depending on the students and the context. The study shows the interdependence between the teacher, student and other contextual circumstances and gives clear indications in which direction one should go.

Prerequisites for teaching mindfulness and meditation: Experienced teachers from different traditions share their insights2016In: Journal of Yoga & Physical Therapy, E-ISSN 2157-7595, Vol. 6, no 3Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: Several authors have suggested demands and requirements for teaching mindfulness and meditation. In the scientific literature there is however a lack of evaluation of mindfulness teachers and how to teach mindfulness meditation effectively. This study aims at providing deeper insight of the importance of the teachers in the field of mindfulness and meditation and it investigates how mindfulness and meditation teachers describe the prerequisites for teaching mindfulness and meditation.

Method: The method of Thematic Analysis, TA, was utilized to analyse the data from semi-structured interviews conducted with twelve experienced teachers, from different mindfulness and meditation traditions. The participants are mindfulness and meditation teachers from either within the Buddhist, secular or both Buddhist and secular contexts.

Results: The analysis resulted in three main themes and nine subthemes, such as for example the main theme; Teacher qualification with subthemes; Becoming teacher, Being teacher, Pedagogic skills and Social skills. The results suggest a flexible and pragmatic view on how mindfulness and meditation teaching should be provided. Instead of a fixed set of requirements for the teacher and the student, what makes mindfulness and meditation teaching effective has to do with the ability to recognize the potential in every unique situation with an understanding of the impermanent and interdependent relationship between teacher, student and context.

Conclusion: Being and becoming a teacher is a continuous process and anyone can assume the role of mindfulness and meditation teacher. It is dependent on the students and the context. A formalized education is not a prerequisite but what is required is sufficient compassion and insight. For the teacher’s compassion and insight to ripen and for the student to learn, non-ideal conditions and suffering, is required and it is helpful with supportive fellow practitioners, teachers, especially if they themselves practice what they teach and share what they know.

    Abstract [en]

Research have concluded that social relations are an important factor that counteracts stress and increase comfort levels at the workplace. The purpose for this study has been to examine how, and if, different background factors affect the employee’s social relationships and job satisfaction but also if social relationships affect job satisfaction. The survey was conducted as an exploratory survey in which the dependent variables were studied on the basis of gender, age, period of employment and project. It turned out that no statistically significant relationship was found between background variables and job satisfaction. However, a statistically significant relationship was discovered between respondents' social relationships and job satisfaction level. Age and period of employment are factors that affect social relations inside the company.  In summary, the study provides support to theories that strong social support in the workplace improves job satisfaction. Age and period of employment create the conditions for social relationships between its employees and managers. There are also some indications in the data to suggest that age affects the employees job satisfaction.

    Abstract [en]

In January 2020, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child became Swedish law, whichled to a number of questions about whether the children's rights are affected within socialservices. The purpose of the study was to create an understanding of how social workersconsider the child's perspective in the handling of matters relating to financial assistance. Weused a qualitative method choice, where we collected empirical evidence with the help of sixinterviews with social workers in four different municipalities. An analysis was made using thetheoretical concept of discretion. The result showed that children in financial assistance werepaid attention to through their guardians and the child's perspective was presented only in urgentsituations, for example eviction prevention work. The results also showed that the socialworker's discretion is limited by the company's laws, rules and guidelines. On the other hand, the child's perspective is mentioned in the municipality's guidelines, but in an unclear way. Theconclusion of this study raised further questions about how children's participation and how achild's perspective can be integrated into the practical work within financial assistance.

Reciprocities or Incentives?: Understanding Privacy Intrusion Perspectives and Sharing Behaviors2019In: HCI for Cybersecurity, Privacy and Trust: First International Conference, HCI-CPT 2019, Held as Part of the 21st HCI International Conference, HCII 2019, Orlando, FL, USA, July 26–31, 2019, Proceedings / [ed] Abbas Moallem, Cham, Switzerland: Springer, 2019, p. 355-370Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The importance and perception of privacy varies from one context to the other. However, everyone values his or her privacy to a certain extent. The subjectivity of that value, attitudes, and behaviors would depend on different entangling factors. It is important to understand the motivation that influences human behavior, whether to protect or share their information. In this paper, we aim at understanding the boundaries of privacy, factors influencing information sharing behavior including experiences (reciprocities of privacy), and efforts taken to protect one’s data. We collected data using quantitative (survey/quiz) and qualitative means (focus groups). In the survey/quiz, our results showed that intrusion experience and awareness have a significant correlation between sharing of data. Furthermore, our focus groups results yielded details on influencing factors for privacy reciprocities and tradeoffs. We discuss our results in terms of privacy incentives and factors influencing the sharing behavior of their information. Finally, we highlight the complexity of behavior where intrinsic and extrinsic motivations could clash and result in a dilemma such as the privacy paradox phenomenon. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

    Abstract [en]

Aid administrators meet many elderlies in their professional role. The aim was with an from a theoretical perspective on ageism study aid administrator's experiences of discrimination against older people. In this study, the question was asked how they feel about discrimination of older people in society and what they think can strengthen the position for elderly as a group. In this study five aid administrators were interviewed about their experiences of elderly people’s discrimination. The results were analyzed using an ageism perspective with a qualitative content analysis. The result shows that aid administrators see ageism in society by meeting with older people and through social perception. They stated that discrimination, prejudice and stereotypes in society that cause problems for older people like, exclusion, poor treatment and a contributor to a negative self-image. Older becomes less represented than other groups, overrides and availability in society is not adapted to their needs and abilities. Aid administrators argue that the perception of the elderly is an area for improvement. To succeed aid administrators, see the need for knowledge about ageism and that society listens to what older people want and need. It is society's duty to combat discrimination and protect human equivalence.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine if digital technology and construal level affected intention to shop second-hand. The motivation for the study is the human climate impact and that the clothing industry constitutes a burden on the climate. One way to decrease this impact is to achieve behavior changes among consumers. Research indicates that digital technology enables behavior change and that manipulation of construal level affect the ability to make sustainable decisions. The study design manipulated participants to think abstract versus concrete and to use digital technology or no technology. Abstract thinking and digital technology were hypothesized to induce higher intention to shop second hand. Intention to shop second-hand was measured through items regarding Satisfaction, Net promoter score (NPS) and Attractiveness. 554 participants answered an electronic web survey where they estimated their intention to shop second-hand after they had been exposed to the manipulations. The manipulation of construal level was design according to previous research. Three independent two-way ANOVAs was performed. Digital technology affected the intention to shop second hand in terms of Satisfaction. Neither construal level nor interactions between the variables were found regarding Satisfaction. Neither was digital technology, construal level or any interaction detected between the variables regarding NPS or Attractiveness. The conclusions were that 1) the manipulation of construal level seems difficult to apply in an electronic web format and 2) that all the participants were influenced to be more aware of sustainability and therefore the manipulation of construal level had no discernable effect.

"Jag behöver någon som förstår mig": En kvalitativ studie om mödrars upplevelse av relationen till handläggaren under kontaktfamiljsprocessen2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Mothers’ opinions on being asked about exposure to intimate partner violence in child healthcare centres in Sweden2018In: Journal of Child Health Care, ISSN 1367-4935, E-ISSN 1741-2889, Vol. 22, no 2, p. 228-237Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Intimate partner violence (IPV) constitutes a hidden health risk for exposed mothers and children. In Sweden, screening for IPV in healthcare has only been routine during pregnancy, despite an increase in IPV following childbirth. The arguments against routine questions postpartum have concerned a lack of evidence of beneficial effects as well as fear of stigmatizing women or placing abused women at further risk. Increased understanding of women’s attitudes to routine questions may allay these fears. In this study, 198 mothers in 12 child healthcare centres (CHCs) filled in a short questionnaire about their exposure and received information on IPV at a regular baby check-up visit. The mothers’ lifetime prevalence of exposure to IPV was 16%. One hundred and twenty-eight mothers participated in a telephone interview, giving their opinion on the screening experience. The intervention was well-received by most of the mothers who reported that questions and information on IPV are essential for parents, considering the health risks for children, and that the CHC is a natural arena for this. Necessary prerequisites were that questioning be routine to avoid stigmatizing and be offered in privacy without the partner being present.

Livet efter ett beroende: En kvalitativ studie om vägen från att vara beroende till ett rökfritt liv.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Bridging Boundaries in the Borderland of Bureaucracies: Individual Impact on Organisational Adaption to Demanding Situations in Civil and Military Contexts2013Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to reach a deeper understanding of how boundary spanners are bridging boundaries between uniformed bureaucratic organisations and their environment, characterised by demanding conditions.

The main part of this thesis is based upon empirical data gathered through 71 interviews with Swedish civil and military informants from several uniformed organisations. Four articles have been included in this thesis in order to address the overarching aim.

The results show that boundary spanners are crucial to the adaption of uniformed organisations to demanding conditions. A number of aspects that are included in the process of organisational adaption have been identified. One of the tasks is to balance between structuring and improvisation where much is at stake. The other task is to create confidence among the involved actors and contribute in different ways to create a sense of symmetry between partners. Finally, the third task for boundary spanners is to recognise improvised roles such as spontaneous links in order to maintain stressful conditions and bridge a gap in the bureaucratic organisation.

The present thesis contributes to sociological theory of emotions, disaster management and military studies through a common denominator, namely the demanding context. Taken together, the findings increase awareness of how organisations act towards their environments and how individuals, especially boundary spanners, adapt the organisation to its environment. For leaders and managers, it is important to make decisions, provide mandates and authorisation, as well as invest confidence in boundary spanners. The hierarchical chain may remain in existence, but it can be made shorter and more transparent through this kind of knowledge.

    Abstract [en]

In connection with Covid-19 pandemic, employers were forced to change their behavior and adjust to new working life challenges. Firstly, the pandemic became a healthcare disaster and secondly a crisis with social and emotional consequences for workers. The purpose of this article is to investigate the presence of threats to the social self in the working life context. We are looking for shame or shame-related feelings and behaviors, which can be linked to the pandemic. The threat to the social self can be intentional or unintentional and consist of behaviors and gestures that are perceived as derogatory and in terms of bullying, violations, humiliations, harassment or organizational changes.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the present pilot study was to investigate the relationship between musical sophistication and working memory in a Swedish population. Hypotheses included that there would be a moderately strong correlation between musical sophistication and musical working memory, a moderate but somewhat weaker relationship between musical sophistication and auditory working memory, and no relationship between musical sophistication and visuospatial working memory. The study was of cross-sectional design and included 31 adult participants. The participants filled in a self-assessment form about musicality (Gold-MSI) and then had to complete three working memory tests (Melody Discrimination Test, Digit Span, Spatial Span). Spearman's correlation was used to analyze the data. The result showed a moderately strong correlation between musical sophistication and musical working memory. No significant results were obtained for the other working memory tests. An exploratory analysis of the relationship between musical sophistication and musical working memory showed that musical working memory ability correlated with some subscales on the Gold-MSI where there was a strong relationship with musical training, moderate with singing ability and weak with perceptual ability. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that Music training was the individual variable that explained the variance in musical working memory (32%). The results of this study provide important indications for future research on working memory and can be used to further investigate the possibility of introducing music training interventions as a means of improving working memory ability.

Gräsrotsbyråkratens oundvikliga dilemma: En studie om utmaningar och strategier hos arbetsförmedlare2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

At the Employment Service Agency, there has been high demand for good results, partly on the public’s belief that the agency withhold work, and partly on the agency’s need to process citizens quickly and efficiently out of their system. The professional role of the agency employees ought to have a complexity of some sort, which this study has also confirmed. In addition, the discretion of services has shown a number of dependent variables. Workers strive to help the unemployed to find work, but they often tend to struggle in doing so since there are other aspects of the work position that needs to be taken into consideration. The overall purpose of this study is based on a sociological perspective to shed light on factors that influence decision making made by the workers at the Employment Service Department, and in their encounter with citizens. The purpose of this study is to highlight the workers’ understanding of the challenges at work, as well as possible strategies they use to cope with hardships they face in their working day. Furthermore, this study aims for an understanding of the driving forces that motivate the administrators to keep going despite of those challenges. Questions of this study have been answered through a qualitative method in the form of semi-structured interviews, where employees were allowed to answer questions concerning their professional role and how they view the exercise of authority at the Employment Service Department..Once the material had been analyzed, observations emerged that indicate a number of factors that can influence decision makers. One central factor has been the dilemma of trying to be both government officials and fellow human beings in interaction with citizens. It has also been found that the lack of time and requirements for administration have a strong influence in decision making. Furthermore, the results of this study indicates that the workers biggest driving force is genuine care for others. However, it has shown in practice that there are a number of hidden factors that result in workers distancing themselves from their work.

Fears, Stress and Burnout in Parents of Children with Chronic Conditions: Treatment with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Mindfulness2017Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the present research was threefold: to investigate the fears of parents of children with chronic conditions; to evaluate the effectiveness of their treatment with either mindfulness-based therapy or cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT); and to assess treatment outcome in terms of health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Long-term stress can lead to some form of chronic stress reaction. In study one, fears of future cancer recurrence and of late effects of treatment were most prominent among parents of CNS tumour patients. Study two investigated the effectiveness of two group-based interventions on stress and burnout among parents of children with chronic conditions. Parents were offered either a CBT or a mindfulness programme. Both interventions significantly decreased stress and burnout. Study three focused on the HRQoL and life satisfaction of the parents in study two. The results indicate improvements for participants in both treatment groups regarding certain areas of HRQoL and life satisfaction. To conclude, fears concerning future cancer recurrence and late effects of treatment are most prominent among parents of children with cancer. Another conclusion is that CBT and mindfulness decrease stress and burnout and may have a positive effect on areas of HRQoL and life satisfaction.
