The formation of Swedish independent local lists, 1990-2015: A study into the sources of non-diffusion2017In: Scandinavian Journal of History, ISSN 0346-8755, E-ISSN 1502-7716, Vol. 42, no 5, p. 505-536Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this comparative case-study, elements of diffusion theory are used to examine local conditions conducive to political organization in terms of independent local lists (ILLs). Empirical evidence supports the formulation of three hypotheses for future and more systematic research into the problem: a hypothesis of size, an elite-hypothesis and a mobilization-hypothesis. Although several factors are likely to play a role, the results suggest particularly that ILLs are less likely to occur in localities lacking historical legacies in terms of popular mobilization.

    Abstract [sv]

Swedish student teachers´ perspectives on their short field study in South Africa2018Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper explores if and in what way experiences from a short field study can contribute to student teachers intercultural learning and professional development. The paper is based on focus groups and individual interviews, with two groups of Swedish student teachers that undertook a two-week field study in South African schools. Researches on internationalisation in higher education especially trying to show intercultural learning in teacher education, often last several months or a whole year. Thus, there is a knowledge gap on students’ doing shorter field studies, which our study wants to help fill. The findings show that even a short field study has an important impact on the individual student teacher’s understanding of themselves and awareness of teachers’ living and working conditions in a different culture like South Africa.  It is impossible to conclude that the student teachers became more interculturally competent through this short field study. However, the student teachers in their reflections turn their attention back to their own national context for critical comparisons. As underlined by the student teachers, experiencing the context of teaching and learning and meeting people “in reality” is something that really “grabs your heart”.

    Abstract [en]

Densification is a recurring approach in municipal urban planning. This means that local districts are tied to other parts, such as the center core. The densification is an ideal that arose in connection with the criticism of its opposite, sprawl. The sprawl has been considered a major inconvenience as it means that people and places are separated from one another and increases the distances. However, the theories goes apart. Far from all, considers that densification means sustainable development, such a development where all sustainability aspects get the same space. In recent decades, densification has become increasingly popular and today it is often the ideal for a sustainable city, but the question is whether it is truly sustainable or not?

The previous research which forms the basis of the study has been obtained to gain increased understanding and objectivity to the pros and cons of densification. The purpose of the study is to give the reader and ourselves an understanding of how densification as a planning ideal affects Karlstad municipality's social and ecological sustainability as well as results of increased durability due to densification can be demonstrated by measurements and analyzes. The questions thus are of such a nature that they can answer our purpose. What advantages and disadvantages involves densification in the municipality, how and in what way is social and ecological sustainability calculated and can sustainability be legitimized in densification? The method used for collecting empirical results is qualitative. Thus, the selected methods are text analysis of municipal regulatory documents as well as an interview study with municipal officials and politicians.

Based on earlier theories and research, our analysis of the empirical material shows results of that there are both advantages and disadvantages with densifying measures, and that the economic dimension prevail in decisions rather than the ecological and social aspects. Even if the answers to the questions in this analysis, shows both positive and negative consequences, it is not possible to conclusively say that they can be attributed to densification unless there are measurements and analyses on sustainable results. Every city is different, which also includes Karlstad. It is therefore, according to us, not entitled to claim that densification in Karlstad leads to sustainable development until the municipality can report results that can demonstrate that densifying measures in fact has strengthened the social and ecological as well as economic sustainability.

Entrepreneurship in the polis: Understanding political entrepreneurship2015 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Dynamics of entrepreneurship have attracted growing attention from scholars of political science, policy studies, public administration and planning, as well as more recently, from the realms of international relations and foreign policy analysis. Under the banner of political entrepreneurship, this volume considers and maps out conceptual approaches to the study of entrepreneurship drawn from these fields, discusses synergies, envisages new analytical tools and offers contemporary empirical case studies, illustrating the diverse political contexts in which entrepreneurship takes place in the polis. Drawing upon an international cast of senior academics and cutting edge young researchers, the volume takes a closer look at key aspects of political entrepreneurship, such as, defining political entrepreneurs, how it relates to change, decision-making and strategies, organizational arrangements, institutional rules, varying contexts and future research agendas. By highlighting the political aspects of entrepreneurship, the volume presents new exciting opportunities for understanding entrepreneurial activities at regional, national and international levels. The volume will be of particular relevance to scholars and students of political science, policy studies, public administration, planning, international relations and business studies as well as practitioners interested in the nexus and utility of entrepreneurship in the modern-day political world.

When documentation becomes feedback: tensions in feedback activity in Learning Management Systems2021In: Education Inquiry, E-ISSN 2000-4508, Vol. 14, no 2, p. 194-212Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Teachers’ feedback via Learning Management Systems (LMSs) isstudied within the subject of social studies at upper secondaryschool in Sweden. A qualitative study involved classroom observationswithin LMSs, gathering teachers’ feedback on pupils’ submittedassignments, and semi-structured interviews with sixteachers. With the support of activity theory, the interest of thestudy was directed towards the tensions that arise in an activitysystem consisting of teachers’ feedback actions in a digital assessmentcontext. The results reveal tensions in the relationshipbetween grading documentation in the LMS and the subject’straditions in the form of discussions, for example. Tensions weredistinguished in the interaction between a school policy of usinga feedback matrix and teachers’ formative ideals. Tensions werealso distinguished between teachers’ need to legitimise gradesand give feedback according to formative ideals. Finally,a tension was distinguished between the time available for providingfeedback and teachers’ formative ideals for giving feedback.

Besvär!: Om motståndet hos två tvångssammanslagna kommuner i samband med kommunblocksreformen2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The purpose of this essay is to investigate why the two Swedish municipalities of Frykerud and Östmark were the only municipalities in Värmland that were forcibly merged by the state during the ”Municipality block reform” of 1971, and whether local identities played a role in the resistance against this reform.

The study is designed as a comparative case study and builds on both history and political science to analyze the topic from a broader perspective. Based on the research situation three theoretical theses have been formulated, the durability of which will be tested in the analysis part of the essay.

The study notes that Frykeruds resistance against the ”Municipality block reform” started when the reform prevented a planned retirement home construction in the municipality. In the analytical part of the essay, the author discusses how the discontent can be interpreted as symptomatic of bourgeois centralization resistance, as well as being due to the fact that traditional, local self-government as a political subject was perceived as threatened. In Östmark, the "Municipality block reform" developed into a political struggle between the reformist Social Democrats and the "reform-skeptical" conservative parties. The battle started with disagreements over the completions of investments in the municipality.

In the analysis section, the hypotheses previously formulated have been tested, and the author also formulates a new hypothesis regarding the local communities and local identities' political role in the resistance against the "Municipality block reform".

    Abstract [sv]

For the last decades, the party memberships in Sweden have decreased from 600.000 to 300.000, although the general interest in politics have been stable during the same period. This situation can be percieved as a threat to swedish democracy; if the political parties are loosing contact with the citizens, the parties will also face the risk of not being able to canalize the views of the citizens. If that’s the case, the represenative democracy might loose legitimacy. These conclusions have triggered local municipalities in Sweden to launch ”civil dialogue”, innovative ways to include the citizens in public projects and welfare services, with the purpose to re-establish connection and trust between the public and civil sector. However, political studies suggest that civil dialogue rarely have succeeded to strenghtened democracy. In some cases, civil dialogue seemed to hurt trust and legitimacy in local municipalities. That makes the civil dialogue phenomenon interesting – how can attempts to reinforce trust and democracy result in a backfire? What in the core of civil dialogue might catalyze this backlash?

The nature of civil dialogue suggest that cooperation between the public and civil sphere is becoming more acceptable, even desirable, in swedish politics. This development breaks with the traditional ways of public administration and bureaucracy in Sweden. However, the cooperation between the public and civil sphere is also the core of a new broad trend in public administration and governing, namely ”governace”. Governance refers to a way of adminstrating public affairs by the logic of networks, including the civil society in the public affairs with the purpose of making the public administration more effective and to find creative solutions on new problems. The first aim of this study is to recieve a new understanding how the subjective experiences of civil dialogue participants can affect legitimacy and trust, by analyzing the experiences of participants in a failed dialogue. The second aim is to explore wether civil dialogue is better understood as a part of a new broad trend in public buraucracy, governance, rather than more traditional bureaucracy. These aims are fulfilled using a case study, which has a swedish local municipality, Sunne, in focus.

The results of the study suggests that none of the participants of the civil dialogue in Sunne experienced that they had ”been listened to”, which seems to be an important cause behind the negative result of the specific dialogue. The innovativeand failed attempt to strengthen the legitimacy of local democracy resulted in a negative reaction through the traditional channels of political participation. The study also suggests that civil dialogue and governace have some similarities regarding their main principles of value and general logic, but since the municipality of Sunne didn’t implement the steering logics of civil dialogue in its full practice, it’s hard to judge wether it should be perceived as governance or not.

    Abstract [en]

This paper is interested in Swedish psychiatry during the period between 1930-1950,localized to Mariebergs hospital in Sweden. The purpose of this paper has been to testSjöstroms evidence of the pattern that he used to create three analytical concepts, roughlytranslated to; morally educative discipline-treatment, the production process and the idealinstitution citizen. Sjöström motivates that his concepts gives insight into one aspect of thepsychiatric expansion between 1860-1960 as well as creates an understanding of psychiatryas an institution. The source material for this paper has been patients' medical notes writtenby the chief physician of the institution. Via a method which mainly different from Sjöstromin its selection, categorization and more thorough presentation, this paper has seen the samepatterns which Sjöström has created his three concepts from. The ideal institution citizen, defined by its well behaved and calm behaviour emerges also in this papers quantitativecompilation of qualitative data as the clear majority. The morally educative disciplinetreatment, treatments and punishments that focuses on creating an acceptable behaviourrather than the treatment of insanity itself, can be seen in the adjective behaviouraldescriptions of the type well-behaved / badly-behaved which are dominant. The focus in thejournals is behaviour rather than mental decease symptoms such as hallucinations andtreatment is based on unaccepted behaviour rather than symptoms. Also, the sequential orderthat exists between badly-behaved behaviour and treatments, and well-behaved behaviourand rewards shows the focus on behaviour which the concept is based on. The previous tworesults together is the two parts of Sjöströms production process, that trough the morallyeducative discipline-treatment the institution creates an acceptable, quiet and well behavedideal institution citizen were the mental decease becomes secondary.

Narrativity and medicine: Some critical reflections2019In: Philosophy Ethics and Humanities in Medicine, E-ISSN 1747-5341, Vol. 14, article id 9Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

During the last three decades there has been a wave of interest in narrative and narrativity in the humanistic and the social sciences. This narrative turn has spilled over to medicine, where narrative medicine has gained a considerable influence. However, there have also appeared second thoughts on the role of narratives in our lives, as well as on what narratives may mean in relation to clinical medicine. This article presents some influential voices in this debate and scrutinizes the assumptions of narrative medicine in the light of these. It is concluded that there are sound reasons to tread this path with some caution and avoid the too far reaching ambitions on behalf of narrativity in relation to clinical medicine. However, narrative medicine should still be seen as a promising attempt within the broader scope of medical humanities to emphasize the importance of human subjectivity in clinical medicine.

"Det kanske inte finns någon där": En tematisk analys av forskning om Ingmar Bergman och religion2020Student paper second term, 10 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to lay a foundation to be able to examine if textbooks can be used to teach about lived religion. The study used a qualitative content analysis to examine whether lived religion could be identified in textbooks, within religious education, for the higher grades of compulsory school and in the curriculum with its commentary notes. The results were then analyzed in relation to each other to find out which aspects of lived religion coincided when interpreting the different sources. Using a coding scheme as an analysis tool, the content of the sources was interpreted based on the study's theoretical starting point and through a lived religion perspective. The theoretical starting point was based on Enstedt and Plank's (2018) seven themes- and Ammerman's (2016) three dimensions of lived religion. The results showed that lived religion could be identified in both textbooks and the curriculum, and that all aspects of lived religion that could be identified in the curriculum, also could be identified in all three textbooks. As previous research has shown a significant use of textbooks among teachers and that the lived religion perspective can contribute to a more inclusive religious education, the conclusions of this study show that textbooks contain material identified as lived religion. Thus, this study lays the foundation for further examinations into the use of textbooks in teaching about lived religion.

Sustainable Mobility: A quantitative study on the influence of user attitudes and risk perceptions on the consumer's intention to purchase electric vehicles.2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the last decade the automobile industry has invested heavily in the developments of better vehicles, in regards to performance, emissions and also durability. The latest development has been the introduction of electric vehicles into the markets. The electric vehicles are touted as being better for the environment in terms of emissions and even low noise production. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy)calls for ensuring that everyone has access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy. This goal is often geared towards moving the energy production to more renewable sources, making it highly relevant to electric vehicles. Electric vehicles are still fairly new in the market, so it’s worth exploring what the purchase intention looks like and how the interacting environmental factors contribute to the overall intention.

This study aims to investigate consumer’s purchase intention in regards to electric vehicles and the influences that user beliefs, attitudes and risk perceptions have on the consumer’s final decision. The study also seeks to find out how the environmental risk aspects associated with the electric vehicles closely tie into the overall purchase intention. The method of collecting data was through a web-based survey where the respondents filled out different sections, the results of the survey were then studied and presented using quantitative analysis methods. The results of this study are presented with the help of previous research and theoretical frameworks that are relevant to the study topic.

The study concluded that the purchase intention for electric vehicles was pretty high and that the factors influencing the intentions had more to do with personal gains or savings rather than an overall concern for the environment. The study also shows how subtly our actions can be influenced by behavioural social norms around us, this is shown in the fact that the perceived initial motivation behind the purchase intention of electric vehicles is the concern for the environment but on a deeper level it proves to be the result of social action norms.

Det statslösa folket: Rohingyerna-konflikten i Myanmar2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Prehistoric history in Swedish primary school education: pupils' expression of empathy after visiting a cultural heritage site2023In: Education 3-13, ISSN 0300-4279, E-ISSN 1475-7575Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study explores the concept of historical empathy in the context of field trips for young pupils to a prehistoric heritage site in Sweden. The example discussed is a field trip to Vitlycke, a heritage and rock carving site with an associated reconstructed Bronze Age farm, where pupils had the opportunity to experience prehistory with all their senses. The study is based on the idea that historical empathy is a process that involves both cognitive and affective dimensions and that both dimensions are important for progress. The pupils were interviewed after the trip and their responses are related to the concepts of perspective recognition and care. The study shows how the cognitive and affective dimensions were interwoven in the pupils' reasoning and how the field trip contributed to an emotional and personal connection necessary for the development of historical empathy. This engagement led to a broadening and deepening of the pupils' cognitive understanding of Bronze Age life and living conditions, while the cognitive understanding of the historical context contributed to a framework in which they could use their imagination. The results also show the importance of giving pupils time to follow up on their experiences after visiting a heritage site.

Fall- and collision-related injuries among pedestrians in road traffic environment: A Swedish national register-based study2022In: Journal of Safety Research, ISSN 0022-4375, E-ISSN 1879-1247, Vol. 81, p. 153-165Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: To investigate the burden of pedestrian injuries, including pedestrian fall injuries (PFI), compared to other transport-related injuries in Sweden and document their characteristics in terms of demographics, causes, type of injuries, and severity level with a focus on long-term consequences. Methods: Data were retrieved from the national Swedish Traffic Accident Data Acquisition register. A total of 361,531 fatalities and injuries were reported by emergency hospitals during 2010–2019, of which 127,804 were pedestrians (35%). We assessed the magnitude of PFIs and conducted comparative analyses to assess differences compared to other types of road users regarding sex, age, severity level, injury circumstances, hospital care, causes of accidents, and type of injuries. Results: Pedestrians were the second largest group of traffic-related deaths in Sweden after car occupants and accounted for just over a quarter of all fatal accidents in the road traffic environment. Of the total number of pedestrian fatalities, three out of four have been in collision accidents and the others in fall-related accidents. In terms of injuries, pedestrians were the largest group among all road users, regardless of the type of accident. PFIs accounted for a third of all injuries in the road traffic environment and nearly half of all injuries resulting in permanent medical impairment (i.e., 2.2 times more long-term consequences among PFIs compared to injured car occupants). Females (particularly middle-aged and older) and older adults were overrepresented, and most PFIs occurred on urban and municipal roads. The causes were often related to maintenance (e.g., slippery surfaces such as ice, snow, leaves or gravel together with uneven pavements and roads are the cause three out of four of PFIs). Among collision injuries, the representation was almost equal for sex and age. Conclusions: Injuries and fatalities among pedestrians are a considerable issue in the road traffic environment in Sweden. Contrary to other traffic groups, the incidence has not decreased over time, meaning that this issue must be met with specific measures and address the specific risk factors they are associated with. Practical Application: Including fall accidents in the definition of traffic accidents increases the chances of getting better information about the accidents and taking preventive measures.

Kosmiska skuggor i mänsklighetens hemlöshet: En idéhistorisk undersökning av Lovecrafts kosmiska skräck utifrån Heideggers Angst.2023Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper delves into the realm of Lovecraftian cosmic horror, seeking to unravel its profound philosophical implications. Traditionally, Lovecraft’s works have been analyzed within the framework of gothic literature, primarily drawing upon Edmund Burke’s concept of the sublime. However, this study argues that to fully grasp the essence of cosmic horror, an alternative theoretical lens is required. By integrating Martin Heidegger’s existential philosophy, particularly his notions of Angst and Unheimlich, this paper offers a fresh perspective on Lovecraft’s cosmic horror. Lovecraft’s essays Supernatural Horror in Literature and Notes on Writing Weird Fiction provides comprehensive insights into the nature of cosmic horror. By interpreting Lovecraft’s essays through the lens of Heidegger’s concept of Unheimlich and Angst, this paper illuminates new dimensions and latent meanings within Lovecraft’s literary works and mythos. This paper argues that Lovecraft’s tales and mythology are imbued with existential philosophy, mirroring the parallel development of Heidegger’s ideas during the same period. This philosophical interpretation of Lovecraft’s cosmic horror not only enriches the reading experience but also underscores its significance as a literary genre intertwined with profound philosophical concepts and the existential questions that lie at the heart of cosmic horror.

Döden väntar inte: Anpassningar av vanliga begravningar under Covid-19 pandemin2020Student paper second term, 10 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This paper discusses five history teachers experience working with fiction in history teachingas well as their views on its usefulness and role in the subject of history. The study has used a qualitative method and the empirical material has consisted of fiveinterviews with five different history teachers. The material has been transcribed and then beensorted and reduced with the help of coding, where experiences of using fiction in historyteaching at upper secondary school, how fiction has been used and what opportunities anddifficulties there are in working with fiction in history teaching were what was sought. Theresult was analyzed using previous research and three concepts, historical significance, historical perspective, and evidence, from Seixas and Morton’s theory of historical thinking. The result shows how the five teachers worked with fiction in history teaching and themany advantages of using fiction in history teaching. Above all, fiction’s opportunities to createan interest in the subject among the students, opportunities to work with source criticism andthe use of history and to help the students develop their historical perspective-taking were seenas positive. The major difficulty that was mentioned was the lack of time in the history subjectat upper secondary school level, which led to fiction not being used to the extent that mighthave been desired by the teachers.

Buddhismens olika ansikten: Gymnasieelevers föreställningar om buddhism2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In Sweden and in the West, interest in Buddhism has increased and many have a more positive view of Buddhism than other religions. Other studies have been able to discern this positive view of Buddhism, but I have not yet found a study that has examined how students view Buddhism. At secondary school, Religionskunskap 1 is a compulsory course that all-school students read regardless of program, and thus all studentshave been taught about Buddhism. In this thesis, I try to find out how secondary school students who recently took the course view Buddhism and how well the orientalist mindset and postcolonial perspective appear in the students ́ statements.Students from three upper secondary schools participated in the survey and at each interview 5 -6 students were interviewed. The result showed that the students had a very positiveimageof Buddhism. The view of religion, prayer and ruleswas not as good and therefore the students had difficulty defining Buddhism as a religion. Two imagesappeared clearly and the first was that Buddhism is a kind of philosophy of life and the other that it is a religion but without a god and that it is a good religion. The students meant thatBuddhismcan be definiteas areligion because there is a founder, Buddha, belief in some supernatural powers like "samsara" and "nirvana", but somestudents object by saying that a religion must have some kind of God, and they understand that Buddhism doesn’t have a God. In the conversation about Buddhism, it is clear that the students are talking about a form of Buddhism. The leek's rites are notmentioned. The only ritual associated with Buddhism is meditation seen as a tool for reaching the "truth" or nirvana. There are monks, the Dalai Lama and the Buddha who can represent the Buddhists, the laymen, on the other hand, get little place in student conversations. The conclusion that can be drawn from the results is that the students' view of Buddhism is largely in line with the image found in previous research. The result that was extra interesting was that the students questioned Buddhism as a religion, something that seems to be public perceptions both within the academy and the public.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay maps and analyze the dynamic interaction between the regional and municipal levels. This is based on the case of Region Jönköpings län. The thesis is a qualitative document study that will focus on he municipalities and the region as unitary public actors and their public policy in the development area. The study material is public documents of the municipalities and the region that relates to municipl/regional development.

The essay is based on previous research dealing with New regionalism, Rescaling, Re-territorialization, the Competition state (konkurrensstaten) and New Public Governance. In addition, previous research also handles unity as a factor for regional development and local/regional conditions. Based on these, the study's theoretical approaches and frameworks have constructed and formed the basis of the interpretations for the study's issues.

The conclusions of the study are that the dynamics, attitudes and interactions between the region and its municipalities takes place in a complex system where ach actor's conditions, objectivies and ambitions determine how they view themselves, each other and the region as a whole. The conditions can include anything from the geographical situation, demographics, business composition and communications with the rest of the region. In addition, the municipalities' efforts to be competitive, attractive and distinctive can be linked to the societal developments of the past decades. It is about the impact explained by New regionalism, New Public Governance and the Competition state on the local/regional landscape within which the municipalities and the region reside, as well as creating a landscape where several actors, on several levels, share the same commitments, responsibilities and powers. Which gives us a complex game between regional unity and leadership, and a municipal effort to be singular.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis is about the reasons for an involvement in the European Union. The thesis addresses this topic using the case of Region Jönköping County (RJL) and their involvement in the European Union. The method is content analysis to explore if the activity by RJL can be explained by the theories Europeanization and Multi-level governance using documentation from the region. Based on this, one should be able to answer the purpose of this study. The documentation under review is the 2013 Regional Development Strategy, which is valid until 2025, the Regional budget and the Operational plan for 2018, as well as the Multiannual plans for 2019-2010.

Based on these theories, several specific issues were addressed that all addressed the Europeanization Upload-, Download- and Crossload-dimension, as well as the Resource Push and Pull factors were represented. These issues were later used in the examination of the documentation to answer the issues and the purpose of the study.

A conclusion or conclusions of the study are concluded that there are some connections between the regional documentation and the theories used in this study. Which makes it possible to start drawing conclusions about the more general issues. The conclusions drawn in this thesis will be that the connections seen between the regional documentation and the theories. This means that the theories can explain what lies behind the involvement to the European Union. These theories and what they represent can also put words and underlying understanding into what lies behind and why we see some action from Region Jönköping County. This can also explain how theories can help us understand similar cases like this region.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study has been to investigate how religious beliefs are met in the classroom inreligious studies. The study has also sought to answer if there are any methods to use in orderto create the best education in religious studies. One of the questions asked in the study is; howreligious persuasion is dealt with in the classroom of religious studies? Furthermore, a questionasked is: what didactic methods are there for teachers to use in religious studies education? Inorder to answer these questions, previous research regarding interviews with both teachers andstudents and classroom observations has been taken into consideration. The material has beenanalysed through a content analysis and an encoding process. The result shows a differencebetween how students view religion and religious studies, based on their own religious beliefs.Students with religious beliefs experience that the demands in religious studies are too lowwhile students with no religious beliefs often have a one-sided and quite negative image ofreligion. Furthermore, the result shows how teachers are working in religious studies and whatdidactic methods that can be used in order for students to find the subject educational. The resultof the study highlights the importance of allowing the students to learn about the differentreligions in dept. Last, the result shows that the relationship between the teacher and the student, with respect for the individual, is the key for a successful education in religious studies.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This essay is a comparative case study that examines the planning of civil defense from Halland, Västra Götaland, Värmland and Örebro county administrative boards from a collaborative perspective. The overall question is what similarities and differences exist between the county administrative board planning. The empiric material is obtained through semi-structured qualitative interviews with officials at the executive and supervisory level of the investigated county administrative boards. The collected material is categorized and analyzed based on an analysis model based on a framework, An Integrative Framework for Collaborative Governance. The analysis compares the work of the four county administrative boards in planning civil defense through cooperation. The results of the study shows that there are major differences between the county administrative authorities in how they have taken on the task and what activity they are pursuing to create legitimacy, cross-border action and overall understanding between actors to create the conditions for civil defense planning. There are also major differences in how they perceived the governance that comes from national authority. The result also shows that there are major similarities in the needs of the four county administrative boards, including coordination in the hierarchical organization from national to local level regarding industry agreements and coherent planning. The framework can be found useful as an analysis tool for collaborative planning in civil defense.

En jämförande analys över arbetsstugorna: -i Karlstad och Borås 1899-1928 ur ett genusperspektiv2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examines how gender and the gender order used to be reproduced in “the kind of workhouses known as “arbetsstugor” in Swedish” in Karlstad and Borås 1899-1928. What ideologies and general notions of gender were expressed in their activities? I have made a comparative analysis of the workhouses in Karlstad and Borås using what is known as contextual contrasts. This method is used to test theories and hypotheses about what is locally unique or features that are shared between places. The hypothesis tested in the study is based on Hirdman's theory of gender contracts and “the law of separation” and it was formulated on the assumption that the traditionally more conservative Borås would also have a stricter policy on gender separation than the traditionally more liberal Karlstad.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to investigate the work of the temperance board in Karlstad during the interwar period and the crisis years when the economic depression affected Sweden, specifically around the year 1930. The focus was on the years 1927–1932, aiming to demonstrate a change in temperance efforts in the city of Karlstad. The study is qualitative with quantitative elements, and data were collected in numerical form to present the statistical findings. The examination involved a careful review of the minutes of the Karlstad City Council found in the annual report of the temperance board. Content analysis was employed to process the material, and the study aimed to answer the following questions: How did public sobriety vary in Karlstad from 1927 to 1932, and to what extent did documented alcohol offenses occur among individuals under 25 during the study period?

The source material was analyzed using Anthony Giddens' structuration theory, based on the perspective of change presented by Helena Eriksson in her thesis "Population, Society, and Change."

In the analysis section of this study, it is evident how alcohol-related offenses changed, with a noticeable shift from 1927 to 1932, showing a clear decrease in the number of arrests for such offenses during these years. It is also observed that the number of cases processed by the temperance board significantly decreased in 1930, 1931, and 1932. This, in turn, contributed to a noticeable decrease in individuals under 25 years old being apprehended for drunkenness.

    Abstract [sv]

    En kvalitativ metod valdes ut som lämpligast tillvägagångssätt för att besvara följande tre undersökningsfrågeställningar;

    - Hur uppstod myten kring Johan Tinglöf?

    - Hur har Tinglöf-myten utvecklats över tid?

    - Vilken funktion har Tinglöf-myten haft i relation till Ekshärad som bygd?

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis was to try to investigate how f-3 teachers view younger children's ability to understand history and how they teach to develop students' historical knowledge and subject understanding. This by using semi-structured interviews to ask two teachers about how they choose to plan and teach the subject in order to create conditions for the students to develop a historical consciousness. However, this approach makes the result impossible to generalize. The result can be interpreted as the two teachers striving to meet the central content in order for the students to achieve the goals within the subject and get as good a chronological overview as possible. But that much of the developmental psychology idea about how younger children can acquire history education seems to remain.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate what role the aesthetic learning processes in historical workshops can play in developing students' historical consciousness and historical empathy. This has been investigated by interviewing six teachers who have been at Stavgard iron age camp school with their classes. The survey found that historical workshops are appreciated among teachers and students and that it is a priority in the teaching, even though this means a great financial effort for the school. The aesthetic learning processes are represented at Stavgard through practical work, stories and to some extent drama. The stay at Stavgard creates a common frame of reference for teachers and class, based on which historical consciousness is built during future history teaching. At the camp school, the pupils practice iron age life for two days, and the study shows that the pupils themselves by experiencing the hardship of the Iron Age people develop historical empathy. In addition to this, it is also described how the pre- and post-work in connection with the stay at Stavgard is designed by the different teachers.

    Abstract [en]

Climate change is a complex risk that entails new challenges for risk management. The risk of flooding increases as sea levels rise and rainfall and heavy rain become more frequent. The adaptation of communities to climate change is of the utmost importance, given that emission levels continue to increase and climate change at this stage is inevitable. In cities around the world, there is a trend where former industrial ports are being transformed into areas with waterfront buildings. To manage the risk of flooding different types of flood protection are built, for example levees, dikes and dams. Research shows that such types of protection tend to lead to reduced risk perception and a false sense of security which in turn results in increased exploitation of flood-threatened areas. This has a negative effect on the resilience of societies and can lead to devastating consequences should the protection break.

The aim of the study is to contribute to knowledge about how climate adaptation measures for floods affect community resilience and to investigate the relationship between flood risk management and the development of buildings in urban environments. The intention is that the findings of this study can work as support in future design of climate adaptation measures to make them more efficient.

The study is carried out as a qualitative case study of Arvika municipality's management of flood risk. Data are collected from key municipal documents and semi-structured interviews with representatives from the communal emergency service, the county administrative board and The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency. The material is divided into categories with the help of qualitative content analysis and are later discussed using theories about resilience and risk homeostasis.

The results show that the knowledge about flood risk before a major event in the municipality was deficient and that the risk of flooding up to that point had been neglected in the municipality's risk inventory. After the incident, the knowledge has increased, collaboration between actors has improved and the working methods of the emergency service have changed. The interviews show that the view of the flood protection's impact on resilience is predominantly positive and that the protection is seen as enabling exploitation in the city's port area, but that this is subject to a certain degree of uncertainty.

    Abstract [en]

This study focuses on how Asatrú movements in Sweden are depicted and discussed in digital news articles through two different lenses: How are these movements depicted and which aspects of these movements and their faith are brought up most frequently? The theoretical framework for the study consists of Stuart Hall’s Reception Theory, positive and negative Essentialism as well as Erving Goffman’s theory of Stigma. The method consists of a qualitative content analysis focusing on analyzing the ideas, ideologies and narratives presented in the studied articles, and the material consists of digital articles picked from various Swedish news publications such as Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter and Expressen, published between 2015 - 2021. The study shows that the discussion of these Asatrú movements is dominated by their perceived connections to racism and right wing extremist groups. On the other hand, the articles and their authors also make attempts to counterbalance this depiction by discussing aspects of the religion such as Blót, ritual sacrifices, as well as by interviewing members of these movements to show their thoughts and feelings about their religion.

An integrated method for assessing climate-related risks and adaptation alternatives in urban areas2015In: Climate Risk Management, E-ISSN 2212-0963, Vol. 7, p. 31-50Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The urban environment is a complex structure with interlinked social, ecological and technical structures. Global warming is expected to have a broad variety of impacts, which will add to the complexity. Climate changes will force adaptation, to reduce climate-related risks. Adaptation measures can address one aspect at the time, or aim for a holistic approach to avoid maladaptation. This paper presents a systematic, integrated approach for assessing alternatives for reducing the risks of heat waves, flooding and air pollution in urban settings, with the aim of reducing the risk of maladaptation. The study includes strategies covering different spatial scales, and both the current climate situation and the climate predicted under climate change scenarios. The adaptation strategies investigated included increasing vegetation; selecting density, height and colour of buildings; and retreat or resist (defend) against sea-level rise. Their effectiveness was assessed with regard to not only flooding, heat stress and air quality but also with regard to resource use, emissions to air (incl. GHG), soil and water, and people’s perceptions and vulnerability. The effectiveness of the strategies were ranked on a common scale (from -3 to 3) in an integrated assessment. Integrated assessments are recommended, as they help identify the most sustainable solutions, but to reduce the risk of maladaptation they require experts from a variety of disciplines. The most generally applicable recommendation, derived from the integrated assessment here, taking into account both expertise from different municipal departments, literature surveys, life cycle assessments and publics perceptions, is to increase the urban greenery, as it contributes to several positive aspects such as heat stress mitigation, air quality improvement, effective storm-water and flood-risk management, and it has several positive social impacts. The most favourable alternative was compact, mid-rise, light coloured building design with large parks/green areas and trees near buildings. © 2015 The Authors.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The education of politics is a central part in the subject of Social studies. It's an additionally part of the overall mission to prepare the students for an active political participation in the society.

However, young people usually have subjective perceptions and experiences of the topic, what politics is about, and not very rarely with a negative mindset. With this background, it has become a challenge to teach social sciences in school, but also for the teachers to meet the students' perceptions and to pursue an education that creates an interest in politics but also challenges the students' negative mindset towards the topic.

The purpose of the thesis is to provide teachers in social studies with a basis in the designs of their Learning and Teaching Model in the topic of politics and political participation. The thesis's foundation consists of high school students' personal opinions and perceptions in relation to politics, political participation, the education and lecturing in social science.

The thesis's methodological approach consists of four qualitative focus group interviews with a sample of students from high school.

The result of the thesis reflects that students' perceptions of politics move towards the concept and framework of representative democracy, where the choice of representatives in form of politicians and national political parties, are the key elements. The three dimensions - polity, policy and politics - which are concepts of politics, are all presented in the students' perceptions from the interviews. The dimension of Polity is reflected in the students' opinions related to political parties, the parliament and the government, which are all important parts of the rules in the political game. The Policy dimension is presented in the students' reflections towards the political debate and the parties' standpoints in their specific political agenda and issues. The dimension of politics emerges in the students' thoughts and reflections towards the politicians and their parties struggle for the political power at national level, but also in relation to the citizens' power to affect politics.

Furthermore, students' find it important with a political engagement in the society - it's a responsibility. Despite this, the students' express a certain scepticism towards citizens complaining about the national politics, even though being political inactive with no political contribution. Additionally, the students' find it important to participate in elections.

Other forms of political activities and engagements that the students value as important, are demonstrations or petitions.

Most essential for the students' concerns questions and issues with a personal passion and something they can stand up for. What is not generally attractive amongst the students' is to candidate for a political position or to join a political party.

Concerning the students’ beliefs and perceptions towards the political education in the topic of social studies, the Swedish regime, the parliament, the government and the political parties are mentioned. Furthermore, the students reflect other countries national regimes.

During the focus group interviews, some students mention the lecturing of the political parties and in particular, focus group A and B had wished for a more in-depth education of the political parties.

However, the focus group C and D refers to one previous schoolwork with the task to immerse themselves in an optional political party and debate against another student. It was an educative task.

Interesting to note, focus group A and B requests education on continuous politics which address current issues of the daily political debate in the society.

    Abstract [en]

Young climate activists' motivations are frequently described in negative connotations such as climate anxiety or flight shame in the media. Their lifestyles are said to be full of constraints. This study examines how climate activistic students themselves view their lifestyle and analyses their visions for the socioecological transformation. Based on a theoretical framework of the political-ecological adaptation paradigm and an imagination framework, the following results emerged.

In five semi-structured interviews during a qualitative study, six main themes were found. In (1) “to practice what I preach” students highlight that they have adapted to sustainable lifestyles using sufficiency strategies inter alia. There is variation in their (2) “activist engagement” but they all envision their studies as being one form of activism. They do not feel a lack of (3) “freedom of choice”, but feel privileged anyhow, as they consciously choose these lifestyles imposing some constraints for themselves. More stressful are the many decisions that must be made and their environmental awareness, which they constantly question even with the best of intentions. In doing so, their (4) “climate activist community” serves to make decisions, learn together, get involved and create a common will. Their transformative (5) “visions” play around an integrative human-nature relationship and better interpersonal relationships with open and honest communication. Structural changes are most necessary to them. Despite all realism and skepticism, the participants in the study express (6) “active, grounded hope”.
