    Abstract [en]

Uncanny and Abject: Magical Thinking in the Works of Selma Lagerlöf and Carina Rydberg

This article utilises Freud's notion of "the uncanny" and Kristevas concepts of "abject" and "abjection" in their original meanings as tools in the analysis of certain aspects of Carina Rydberg's The Devils's formula (2000) and Selma Lagerlöf's Charlotte Löwensköld (1925) and Anna Svärd (1928). There are a number of surprising connections between these narratives in a broader intertextual sense. For instance, The Sundler, one of the protagonists in Lagerlöf's work, is at the outset of the novel scary because she seeems so manipulative, but her character escalates from this uncanniness into evoking stronger fears of abjection at the end of the narrative, while the narrator-protagonist Carina in Rydberg's work is in the outset of the novel marked by abjection, later undergoes a change in terms of subjectivation, but ends in scaring the reader through uncertainities typical of the uncanny.

    Abstract [en]

This article discusses a current problem in the research of literary reading and of literature instruction.Which theoretical models are needed in order to describe and to understand the differentpractices of reading and teaching literature in school? The theoretical concept in focus is form ofreading (Swedish läsart), which points to the reader’s particular way of discerning the text. I beginby examining some of the consequences of a long-standing, almost habitual, application withinSwedish research on literature instruction of a single theoretical perspective on forms of reading. This perspective is taken from Louise Rosenblatt and involves the orientations of reading whichshe calls aesthetic and efferent reading. My initial discussion is thus bears upon the problemsgenerated by this kind of theoretical conformity. In order to broaden the range of theoretical terminology with which students’ reading and teachers’teaching might be analyzed my own initial idea was to suggest and apply empirically twodifferent perspectives on forms of reading, stemming from Michael Riffaterre and Marie-LaureRyan. However, since these models, like many others, are wrapped up in complex text theorieswith implied readers, whose interpretive operations have little resemblance with the interpretivestrategies expected from teenage readers in school, even this approach seemed less productive. What we need instead – and this is my main point –, when it comes to examining the differentforms of reading advocated in the classroom, is to theorize the practices of reading rather than toabide by already conventional understandings. By reference to the literary orientations in a shortsequence from a literature discussion in eighth grade I suggest the term meta-cognitive form ofreading.

    Abstract [en]

The article aims at studying game violence from an “awry” perspective, i.e. in terms of how games deal with the violence against animals inherent in processes of producing and consuming meat. Rockstar’s notorious Manhunt (2003) is taken as an initial example of how violence in games is usually dealt with. I argue that the focus on gruesome imagery serves an ideological function by hiding the real material violence of the game industry. As an alternative, I suggest that we focus on how games make visible systemic, yet less palpable, forms of ideological violence. My main focus is on how three contemporary open-world games represent the relation between eating meat and the industrial killing of animals.

Three basic conceptual perspectives are combined: Slavoj Žižek’s distinction between subjective and objective violence; Melanie Joy’s conceptualization of cultural carnism as a cognitive scheme; and Ian Bogost’s procedural-rhetorical approach to videogames as models of material processes. These are employed in order to analyze three games taking a varied approach to the representation of meat as food: Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004), which includes a discursive critique of factory farming without also implementing it as a gameplay mechanic; Lionhead’s Fable II (2008), which implements ethical and political incentives for vegetarianism in the core mechanics of the game, yet allows for varied approaches in role-playing; and Maxis’ The Sims 3 (2009), which seems to include such incentives yet undermines them by dislodging food from its material origin in its model of the game world.
