    Abstract [en]

This essay aims at analyzing how to work with factual texts with early-age pupils. I analyzehow four elementary school teachers work with reading and understanding of factual texts. Inthis survey, I study the context in which teachers work with factual texts and when theychoose to introduce them to the pupils. I also looked at what reading strategies teachers usewhen reading factual text with their pupils. As my main method, I have used interviews and Ihave collected and analyzed material relevant and useful for my study. The four informantschosen for the survey are active teachers and have worked in the profession for at least tenyears to gain a breadth in their experience. They work at two different schools. My studyshows that factual texts are an important part of the teaching for my informants, but there is adifference between the schools. One school works continuously with a genre goal and has agreater awareness of reading factual texts than the other school has.

Digitala verktyg i SFI-undervisningen i A-kurs: En studie om användningen och betydelsen av digitala verktyg i vuxna elevers språkinlärning2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate which digital tools are used in SFI teaching of adult students without school background and how these tools are used, what abilities the students practice and what significance digital tools have in these students language learning. To investigate this, I have used a method combination of structured observations in two A-groups as well as semi-structured interviews with two teachers in these groups.

The results show that the digital tools used in the A-course are Ipad and apps, Smart Notebook/Smartboard, Computer, Lunis and Powerpoint. These tools are mostly used for individual work, but there are times when some of these tools are used in full class. With the help of these tools, students practice the ability to listen and understand, speak (pronounce), read and understand, write and work independently. The results also show a fairly small interaction between students while working with digital tools.

Teachers’ perceptions are that digital tools are of great importance in the language learning of adult learners without a school background. According to the teachers, digital tools offer a wide variety of opportunities for these students to practice and develop all language skills. The study also shows that there are certain areas that can be developed.

Why should physicians read?: Understanding clinical judgement and its relation to literary experience2010Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Is literary experience of any practical relevance to the clinician? This is the overall question addressed by this investigation, which starts by tracing the historical roots of scientific medicine. These are found to be intimately linked to a form of rationality associated with the scientific revolution of the 17th century and with “modernity”. Medical practice, however, is dependent also on another form of rationality associated with what Stephen Toulmin calls “the epistemology of the biographical”. The very core of clinical medicine is shown to be the clinical encounter, an interpretive meeting where the illness experience is at the centre of attention. The physician can reach the goals of medicine only by developing clinical judgement. Clinical judgement is subjected to close analysis and is assumed to be intimately connected to the form of knowledge Aristotle called phronesis.

In order to explore how literature – drama, novels, poetry – may be related to clinical judgement, a view of literature is presented that emphasizes literature as an invitation to the reader, to be met responsibly and responsively. Literature carries a potential for a widened experience, for a more nuanced perception of reality – and this potential is suggested to be ethically relevant to the practice of medicine. The “narrative rationality” of a literary text constitutes a complement to the rationality pervading scientific medicine.

The final step in my analysis is a closer exploration of the potential of the literary text to contribute to the growth of clinical judgement, in relation to the challenges of everyday clinical work. Some of the conditions that may facilitate such growth are outlined, but it is also shown that full empirical evidence for the beneficial effects of reading on the clinician reader is beyond reach.

Den hållbara urbanplaneringens paradoxer: The paradoxes of unsustainable urban planning2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Abstract  This paper has investigated two urban planning ideals that emerges in the planning process. The study's starting point has been sustainable development to study the two existing urban planning ideals today. This means that the compact city and the green city has been the main focus of this study, but sustainability has large space with many of the aspects that is expected to lead to sustainable development. A case study was used to investigate how Karlstad is working on the issue and how the paradox appears in the municipal planning. Karlstad is currently developing a new green structure plan. The study's empirical evidence is based on two interviews with Karlstad municipality officials. The municipal documents Karlstad municipality's comprehensive plan (2012) and Olmårs densification study (2007) has been used. The municipal documents and the interview material was analyzed through meaning content. The study's analysis is based on the study's empirical and theoretical background which shows that there is a paradox in Karlstad municipality's urban planning. It also shows a trend in which cities aim to achieve the sustainable city. As the concept of sustainability is a diffuse concept, the compact city and the green city has become a complex strategy to achieve the sustainable city. This means that the green and compact city can be viewed from several different angles. Karlstad municipality's vision of the compact city is to have a compact city especially in the central parts of the city. These areas are green areas today. A planning dilemma between the aspirations of the planning arises, in which these must be weighed against each other. This means that if the green structure is prioritized then another aspect must be weighed out. In other words; there is a paradox in Karlstad municipal´s urban planning, and this means that if the green structure priority needs another aspect weighed out. This means that there is a paradox in municipal urban planning, and this is shown in this paper.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose was to find out how South African preschool teachers regard play and its relationship to learning, development and influence in play. What teachers think about children’s learning and development, and if children have any influence in their preschool play, according to the preschool teachers. The empirical material consists of interviews with six South African preschool teachers. The analysis has been conducted according to a thematic content of analysis focusing two themes; play, learning and development as one theme and children’s influence on their play as a second theme. The preschool teachers considered that play is beneficial for children in their learning and development. Play is about everything in children’s life; through play children discover the world, learn and develop in a general sense. Play also contributes to children’s learning about interaction with others.A conclusion from the study is that play is considered as an essential part in children’s lives, both in literature and in the interviews. The result shows that the preschool teachers wanted what is best for the children. As the Convention on the rights of the Child states about play: it’s about survival and development, which the teachers considered was a priority.

Medborgardialog - Till för alla?: En fallstudie om hur inbjudande medborgardialogen är i Botkyrka kommun.2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Dual Cultural Influences and Career Paths:: Second-Generation Iranians in Sweden2024Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Nearly four decades after the peak influx of Iranian immigrants to Sweden around 1985-1990, recent academic inquiry has begun to shift its emphasis towards their second generation. These individuals, born to parents who arrived during that period, are now achieving notable positions across various sectors of Swedish society. The significant educational and professional accomplishments of this group, (achieved despite considerable cultural disparities and geographical distances from their parents' country of origin), are noteworthy.

While previous research has primarily concentrated on the adaptation challenges faced by first-generation immigrants in Swedish society, the second generation, particularly concerning their educational and professional achievements, has received less attention. Studies indicate that second-generation Iranian migrants blend Iranian traditions and preferences with Swedish and global traits (Moinian, 2012), have greater proficiency in Swedish than Persian, and often prefer exogamy (Namei, 2012), without especially suffering from identity crises (Ahmadi & Ahmadi, 2012).

Through an intercultural lens, this study examines how the second generation negotiates their identity between two cultures and strategizes their career paths, with education playing a pivotal role. Based on surveys and interviews with six second-generation Iranians born in Sweden, this essay particularly focuses on those whose parents migrated from 1985 to 1990, acknowledging the group's heterogeneity.

The findings of this study, framed within Bourdieu's concept of capital, reveal how the second generation of Iranians in Sweden strategically navigate their educational and career paths. Influenced by the culturally inherited emphasis on education from their families, this navigation exemplifies the embodiment and application of cultural capital within the fields of Swedish society. Additionally, the study shows that these individuals actively engage in both reconstructing their inherited cultural capital and constructing new forms within these societal fields. This process of adapting and creating cultural capital demonstrates a dynamic interaction that creates a pathway for their success, underscoring the fluid and evolving nature of cultural capital, habitus, and field dynamics in new societal contexts.

    Abstract [en]

This master thesis focuses on teaching in reading comprehension strategies and genre knowledge. The study is based on research that shows that education in these areas is important for students' development of reading comprehension. Reading comprehension in itself is the basis for future knowledge acquisition and further studies. The purpose of this study is to investigate how teachers, active in the range from pre-school classes to third grade classes, works explicitly with reading comprehension strategies and genre knowledge.

The research is based on a web-questionnaire survey of all teachers for current grades in the subjects Swedish, Mathematics, Social studies and Science/Technology. It is limited to investigating a municipality in southern Sweden.

The results are coherent in such a way that the majority of teachers asked consider themselves to educate explicitly in reading comprehension strategies. Slightly fewer participants consider themselves to educate explicitly in genre knowledge. Also, based on the answers given by the participants, it turns out that both reading comprehension strategies and genre skills are less taught in this municipality compare to what is recommended according to science.

Explicit eller tyst kunskap – lärande mellan projekt i kommunal sektor: Kunskapsprocesser i kommunala projekt2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Various research initiatives have highlighted the importance of learning both in and between projects, which means that the entire organization will benefit from learning experiences ultimately. Learning in and between projects is therefore a critical success factor for successful projects in the future. This paper is aiming to examine knowledge conversion within and between municipal projects, with em-phasis on whether these processes differ between successful or unsuccessful pro-jects. With the methodology consisting of qualitative - deductive thematic analy-sis, conducted as a case study, - with triangulation as a validation tool – the study revealed some differences in the formalization based on a project's result. The successful project is more likely to result in explicit, rather than tacit, knowledge. This knowledge dimension is achieved through internalization, externalization and combination-processes – whereas the unsuccessful project can consist of so-cialization as well as internalization, as a result of differences in the externaliza-tion of knowledge between projects.

    Abstract [en]

This report demonstrates my research on how students may improve their progress in course with the help of journal writing. I have based my research on two courses within the Restaurant, bar and wine program at Studium Hospitality & Bakery in Gothenburg.

I came up with the idea for the research when I noticed how the students experienced little to no feedback and didn´t really understand what they should do to excel in their courses.

The purpose of the research is to develop a practical and easy-to-work journal and to find out if journal writing can improve the communication between teachers and teacher students. To achieve this I implemented a journal in two courses.

The feedback from the students was positive. They thought the journals quickly became a natural tool to be able to see their own progress and also, they were able to have an ongoing interaction between teacher and student.

In conclusion the journal has given a better overview of the progress a student makes during the course. The journal works as a tool to oversee attendance and it is also an important communication channel between student and teacher. Through the work with the journal the students document their own progression within the course, hence will be able to detect the next step of their development. The journal gives the students the opportunity to discuss which elements of the course have been critical to reach increased progression.  It has also given the teachers an important tool to develop their teaching.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to evaluate teachers attitudes towards reading homework and their thoughts regarding feedback. The study will also be looking at what type of support pupils are given regarding their reading homework and homework in general. This study will also evaluate the teachers’ thoughts on equality in connection with the pupils varying home conditions that affect how much support and help they receive with their reading homework.

I collected data for this study by using survey and interview methods. These two methods complement each other as they give a wide and in-depth-look at the questions in this study.

The results from this study show teachers attitudes towards reading homework as well as different forms of feedback that can be given. It also highlights teachers experiences when it comes to their schools homework support practice relating to reading and other types of homework that their pupils are given. Also included are the teachers’ thoughts regarding equality when related to pupils varying home conditions that affect help and support related to reading homework. The word that best describes teachers’ opinions on the current equivalent schooling is unfairness.

Barnen i Snaskeby: En hermeneutisk undersökning av förra sekelskiftets syn på barns renlighet2020Student paper second term, 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to expose the view of cleanliness and disciplinary methods (parenting) in the Swedish picture book Pelle Snygg och barnen i Snaskeby (1896) by Ottilia Adelborg. The analysis takes a hermeneutic approach with Michel Foucault’s theory of discipline and Norbert Elias civilisation theory. The result shows a clear distinction between how the children are being described as filthy and clean. The clean children are seen as productive and as subjects for learning. Disciplinary methods are used to teach children about cleanliness, which soon becomes a norm in Snaskeby. The conclusion is that cleanliness and disciplinary methods are applied and that the last century’s hygiene ideals had an effect on the view of cleanliness.

    Abstract [en]

Experiences are the base for sustainable learning. The purpose of this work was to determine if the teachers’ interests and knowledge of natural science matter in how they integrate natural science in a pre-school environment. In my study I chose to do semi structured qualitative interviews with both childcare workers as well as early childhood teachers, who work with children of different ages. The purpose of interviewing teachers with different educational backgrounds was to find out if education and knowledge matters when planning how children could work with (or experience) science in preschool and in other than preschool learning situations. It turned out that all teachers showed an interest in science, but on different levels. The levels of knowledge varied as well.  The study shows that the teachers’ interests and knowledge does not affect the presence of scientific teaching in preschool. All teachers believed science was an important part of the preschool environment  and most of them take trips to the forest every week

The purpose of this study is to investigate witch knowledge and thoughts children will have about the term of floating and sinking, and witch possibilities there is to make various knowledge visible in preschool physics through playing with water. The study also concern the differences and similarities between two different groups of age who have participated in the study. The study was carried out by an activity with participant observation and feedback interviews afterwards. The result shows that the possibilities to physics are many in preschool. The children expressed new thoughts and ideas who concern other phenomena in physics during the investigation and discussed similar experiments and material to examine. The result shows that the children used previous experience and knowledge to explain and ask hypotheses. They also used their language through interaction with each other to understand, create and recreate knowledge.

    Abstract [en]

This is a qualitative study that uses semi-structural interviews and the socio-cultural theory. The concepts that become important for the study are support, proximal developmental zone, mediation, and Vygotsky's view of play.

The purpose is to find out in what way preschool teachers reason about their participation in children's free play. In order for our purpose to be answered, we ask the following questions: In which play situations do preschool teachers enter the children's free play? What is the purpose of the preschool teacher when she enters the children's free play? What strategies do preschool teachers use to enter children's free play?

The results show that the concept of free play is difficult and is interpreted in different ways. Preschool teachers' participation usually takes place when the children need support or help. The conclusion of this study shows that depending on the preschool teacher's view of play, all free play can generally be play or perceived as play.

Den fysiska miljöns betydelse för personer med perceptionsstörningar: Verksamhetsnära pedagogers uppfattningar inom LSS-verksamheter2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose with the present study is to examine house pedagogues’ perceptions of how physical factors in the common areas of group homes affect people with perception disorders. The questions that the study further answers is whether adaptations in the physical environment have been implemented or need to be carried out based on the individual's needs, and whether the persons living in the group home have been involved in the design of the physical environment in the common areas. The people who is living in the group home have disabilities in the autism spectrum and intellectual disability of varying degrees.  In order to answer these questions, I have conducted a survey with complementary interviews. The house pedagogues who participated in the study all work in group homes, which are governed by decisions under LSS, The Act on Support and Services for Disabled People.   I have analyzed the result with the theoretical starting point KASAM, which is based on Antonovsky's concept of context. Antonovsky believes that the existence is comprehensible, manageable and meaningful when internal and external stimuli come in an orderly, structured and cohesive manner.   The result of the study shows that the perceptions of house pedagogues are that difficulties in dealing with different forms of sensory experiences in the common areas of the group homes affect the people who is living there. The result also shows that adjustments have been made and that further adjustments would have to be made within the activities to meet the needs of people for the environment, and that in some of the activities, individuals have had the opportunity to influence the design of the physical environment in there living environment.   This study can contribute to increased knowledge, through house pedagogues’ perceptions, about difficulties within different forms of sensory experiences for people with perception disturbances and in what areas there is a need for adaptation.

Kultur för en hållbar framtid?: En begreppshistorisk idéanalys av kulturens roll i diskursen om hållbar utveckling2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The study seeks to explore the assigned role of culture in the discourse of sustainable development. It combines a conceptual-historical analysis of the concept of cultural sustainability and sustainable development with an analysis of ideas with cultural policy models as a theoretical tool as ideal types. It addresses cultural sustainability as an essentially contested concept, maps a context of leading contributions to the meaning and conceptual history of cultural sustainability and sustainable development and applicates Fornäs four cultural concepts to address different meanings of cultural sustainability. The concept is then explored in its absence in A New European Agenda for Culture by the European Commission. The study also explores how the agenda is implemented in projects throughout the Swedish participation in the Creative Europe program and how it effects the meaning of cultural sustainability. The role of culture in A New European Agenda for Culture seems to be an instrumental view of the capacity culture possesses in bringing people together and to bring creativity into businesses, which also is represented in Creative Europe. The instrumental view of culture and the esthetic cultural concept that permeate cultural policy, may influence the ability for cultural sustainability to be accepted as the fourth pillar of sustainability.

    Abstract [en]

This study is meant to analyse the purpose of reorganizing cultural activities within the municipal political and management organization, how such a procedure progresses, and to which extend the organizational location reflects the role of cultural activities in the municipal. To depict the procedure of reorganizing cultural activities in the municipal organization I used qualitative content analysis. When I analyse the role of culture and why the reorganization was made I used idea analysis with ideal types as a tool to contrast different reasons for the reorganization. The ideal types I used was Thomson and Svenssons institutional logics and Dorte-skot Hansens cultural-political rationalities. I came to the conclusion that the sources I have used, documents of public decisions, does not include cultural-political motivations for the reorganization, though it includes motivations about organizational location. On the other hand I received an overview of the procedures progression in Forshaga municipal.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to make visible which strategies children with a mother tongue other than Swedish use to join play in preschool and which strategies preschool staff use to include multilingual children in preschool. The purpose is also to increase knowledge about the meaning of play and the pedagogical outdoor environment for inclusion of children with a mother tongue other than Swedish in preschool. The study is based on a sociocultural theory and discursive psychology as a methodological approach. This study shows that interaction with others is desirable based on the sociocultural theory. To achieve the purpose of the study, observation has been used as a method by performing three observations in an outdoor environment of one preschool. The results of the study show that children with a mother tongue other than Swedish use provocation as a strategy to join play. Artefacts such as bicycles and sandbox toys were also used to invite others to play and also to include each other in closed play. Preschool staff used the sandbox’s toys as tools for interaction with children with a mother tongue other than Swedish. The most important conclusions of the study are that artefacts are important to both children and staff for reaching inclusion, as the artefacts support both interaction and communication, and that multilingual children use strategies to join play that are at risk of being perceived as undesirable behavior.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to analyse how Swedish history books portray East Asia, East Asians and their history. The study is framed within post-colonial studies with particular reference to the concept of Orientalism as defined by the researcher Edward W. Said. The study uses content analysis and Foucault´s power of discourse as methods to highlight Eurocentric dramaturgy and Orientalist concepts and representations used in the history books. The result shows that Orientalism is still present in the history books, although not to the same extent in all series and to a lesser extent in more recent publications.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study has been to describe and problematize how principals are perceiving equity in digitalization based on the concepts in K-6. Eight principals at different schools from the same municipality have been interviewed. The results show that principals use various methods to conduct school development of digitalization in order to achieve equality within the school. Inparticular the results show that there are differences in how far the development of digitalization, digital skills and equivalence has reached both within schools and between schools. The principals have different points of focus in managing the digital implementation. One conclusion based on the analysis is the complex conditions a principal must work under to achieve equality through digitization. The principals are caught between leadership from the municipality and the state. This study shows that all principals must choose individually an area to develop within their school. This can lead to inequalities in the field of digitalization.

    Abstract [en]

Politicians attract their voters by promising more jobs and investment in education, health and social care. Against this background, I wonder how the situation of artists will be affected by the followingquestions:➢ What political views on the artist's position in society appeared in propositions of Socialdemokraterna and Moderaterna?➢ In what way did these propositions influence the conditions of artists?➢ How have the artists of Värmland been affected by different (Socialdemokraterna and Moderaterna) cultural policies? With my investigation I find out more about the artists' conditions on a national level, but I also investigate the situation in Värmland. By examining policy proposals and reports, I learn more about the issues. I also conduct a survey and three in-depth interviews to obtain opinions from various sources. The respondents are the cultural departments of Värmland and representatives from cultural organizations. What is clear from my research is that politicians differ on some issues, especially those relating to commercialism and artist salaries. The questionnaires shows that culture proponents may not always come from the political side. The interviews provided different points of views on the situation inVärmland, but to some extent there are difficulties for the artists who work here. If knowledge of art is low, how is one able to appreciate art and those who create it?

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to analyze the political debate that arose during the development of a municipal art policy in Sunne municipality. This is based on how Sunne municipality has previously worked with public art and how the debate might change it. The study also discusses and analyzes how the local culture plan and art policy work with the national cultural policy goals. The method for the study is a descriptive argumentation analysis. The arguments presented are then further analyzed in the light of the theory of Linda Nochlin about women's misrepresentation in art history. The analysis is also illustrated by theoretical concepts that deal with public art, gender equality and artistic quality. The result shows two different sides of the argument where gender equality goals are set against the idea of an intrinsic value of art.

The purpose of this study is to use life story as a method to describe a former student’s, with her main schooling in the special school, thoughts of life during and after school, as well as the social relationships she has had and has access to. An overarching objective is to contribute to the field of knowledge from a young adult’s perspective. The study is qualitative with a life story approach. In the analysis, Bronfenbrenner’s ecological development model is used. The empirical data consists of transcriptions of conversations and instant prints from Facebook. The study is retrospective, but the study also captures the present day when the informant’s perception of life in the present day is also described. The informant perceives its later school years as more positive than earlier years. The result shows that the availability of social relationships was significantly higher during school in comparison to life as a young adult. The result also shows that the informant’s experience of the support of important adults is predominantly negative.

    Abstract [en]

Assessment has become a more comprehensive feature of teachers' assignments. Although assessment has taken up more space in the schedule, the rest of the teacher tasks have not decreased. This can be problematic. One topic that has attracted a lot of attention over the past decade is reading comprehension. In 2016, the Swedish National Agency for Education introduced knowledge requirements for year one and a required assessment material that teachers have to use.

The purpose of this study is to find out what experiences’ teachers have of assessing students in reading comprehension and what challenges they have faced. In this study, I have interviewed eight teachers. The interviews have been qualitative and semi-structured. The results show that the formative assessment is the most central part of the teachers' assessment process. Assessment situations mentioned are discussions and conversations about texts. The results also show that there are a number of challenges in assessing reading comprehension. What was mentioned the most was the lack of time to listen to each student alone, as well as the challenge of seeing and hearing each individual student. Teachers also responded to what could ease their work in relation to assess reading comprehension. It emerged that additional education for teachers and co-assessment was valuable.

Not Quite på två ben: En studie av synen på kulturkooperativet Not Quite's roll för lokal och regional utveckling2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

For the past decades, culture has been given a role as a factor for local and regional development. But what is meant by development and in what ways culture can be of importance in this aspect can be unclear. This thesis examines the perception of the role for local and regional development of one specific cultural place and network – the cultural cooperative Not Quite in Fengersfors, Sweden. I study the way the role as developer is expressed and interpreted in the discourse of the cultural workers who are members of the network and in the discourse of public cultural policy in the region Västra Götaland and in Åmål municipality. The study shows that there are both similarities and differences between the discourses concerning how the role as developer is expressed. What differs is the focus on economic growth, which is expressed to be of great importance in the public cultural policy discourse. The cultural workers within Not Quite express a lack of interest in economic growth, or even a negative attitude towards it. They instead express a ”discourse of meaning”. For them, the main purpose of their artistic work is to create meaning and value for other people rather than economic growth. However, the practical effects of the differences seem quite small. There seem to be a balance between the different kinds of development Not Quite is expected to contribute to, and the cultural workers express a relaxed attitude to goals and expectations from the Västra Götaland region and Åmål municipality.

Alla kan uppnå mästerskap med rätt förutsättningar!: En kvalitativ studie som undersöker vilka faktorer som påverkar två teams prestationsförmåga2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study is about Frihetsrörelsen (Freedom movement), a newly established movement that got a lot of attention during the event called Tusenmannamarschen, where they marched against Sweden’s restrictions caused by COVID-19. The movement manifests freedom and truth and they mean that the power-elite is trying to restrict our freedom through these restrictions. There are connections one can make to adjacent subgroups but in this work we put our focus on analyzing Frihetsrörelsen. They have uploaded a video on their Youtube channel with the title: Max Winter och Filip Sjöström om vikten av att våga stå upp inför 1:a Maj (Max Winter and Filip Sjöström about the importance of having courage to stand up at the first of May) where two of the founders talk about the movement's purpose, symbolism, roles, activism and their belief in a paradigm shift. There were several other videos to choose from but because of this particular video’s rich content, we made the decision that it held the most fruitful information for our analysis. The purpose of our study is to examine how the movement, through their self presentation and communication, tries to bring in more followers and mediate their message. Earlier research that we chose to examine is: Shieldmaidens of Whiteness: (Alt) Maternalism and Women Recruiting for the Far/Alt-Right by Mattheis. and #hitlerwasright: National Action and National Socialism for the 21st Century by  Jackson. Which both examined the topic of alternative movements with far-right extremist ideas, Frihetsrörelsen can also be classified as such and therefore is relevant. We have conducted a rhetorical analysis using the forms of appeal that consists of ethos, logos and pathos as well as altercasting. Our main research question is as follows: How does Frihetsrörelsen present themselves to mediate their message and attract new followers?. This question is answered by our work questions: How does Frihetsrörelsen convince with the help of ethos, logos and pathos? and What social roles do Frihetsrörelsen ascribe to men and women to convince them of joining the movement?

Even though Frihetsrörelsen talks about being above the paradigm of right and left politics, we found that they have distinct connections to the two far-right extremist groups we examined, with thoughts such as upholding the traditional views of gender roles, acknowledgement of your intuition, activism and selection of an aesthetic style. The study concludes that the representatives, Max and Filip, are presented through the ethos form of appeal as competent and knowledgeable. For the most part they use pathos through feelings of guilt in their communication. Altercasting is used frequently as a tool to assign their followers with more traditional gender roles and identities that the movement itself benefits from. Frihetsrörelsen is somewhat newly established and there are many pieces you can choose to continue researching.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to illuminate how the 19th century’s researchers Carl Axel Gottlund and Albrekt Segerstedt contributed to the design of the cultural heritage of the Forest Finns in northern Värmland. One book from each author was analyzed: Dagbok öfver mina vandringar på Wermlands och Solörs Finnskogar 1821 (1821/2021) by Gottlund, and Segerstedts samling: skogsfinnarna i Skandinavien: en kommenterad och illustrerad källutgåva (1888/2006) by Segerstedt. Theories from the ethnographic field, the critical heritage field and from the field of scientific theories were all utilized. This study shows that the construction of a cultural heritage can be affected by multiple different factors, and that the researchers’ and their different practices often have a central role.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to compare the work of the five municipalities in Dalsland with culture as a means for growth and how they define the concept. The method used is descriptive idea analysis and the material consists of the cultural policy plans made in each municipality and the one from their region: Västra Götaland. Another source of information is interviews with the heads of culture at three of the municipalities. The plans are analyzed via the theory of Dorte Skot-Hansens' three rationalities (they also work as the ideal types throughout the study) and Geir Vestheims theory of the overlapping zone. The result of the study shows that all municipalities have the vision to grow culturally, economically, and in the number of residents. They use culture to reach this vision as they argue it heightens the quality of life, attracts new citizens, and creates more jobs.

    Abstract [en]

There is a growing demand for pilgrimage, which in turn seems to be linked to the change in content and performance that the practice of pilgrimage is undergoing. This paper examines the emergence of Fisterra as a “new” end destination for the pilgrims. The aim of this study is to shed light on and create understanding of the destination Fisterra and the meaning of the place and the role it plays for the pilgrims. Empirically, the study is partly based on statistics and official documents and partly on interviews with pilgrims at Fisterra. The study concludes that contemporary Fisterra as the end of the journey should be perceived as an effect of the post-secular trend in Europe as well as a response to the fact that the historical goal of Santiago de Compostela is increasing

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to describe and interpret Anders Sunna's painting "30 km constraint" from a sami and cultural political perspective. In the study, the financial culture support for Sami culture is described and compared via Sweden’s cultural policy, the regions in north Sweden, as well as the Sami Parliament. The study examines which cultural concept one uses when discussing support for the Sami art. The study applies a hermeneutic approach in which the purpose is to see more perspectives and understanding of the Sami culture and art. The method is based on a qualitative approach with content-based idea analysis with the analysis tools ideal types and dimensions. Ideal types are Dorte Skot-Hansen’s three legitimacy grounds and the dimensions “anthropological-wide” and “artistic-narrow”. Through the study it emerges that support for the Sami culture is under-financed, partly because of lack of knowledge of the Sami culture, and that both the national cultural policy and the regions use mainly sociological and instrumental motivations and the artistic-narrow culture concept.

    Abstract [en]

This essay is about boundaries between, "us and them", in the Swedish culture and immigrant culture in Sweden. The focus is to examine the political interest of the citizens to understand other ethnic cultures who lives in Sweden. One question concerns how the borderlines between different cultures has been painted partly through blogs but also by the media. Is this a result of ignorance or does it depends because of the influence of certain individuals. To find this out, I will study various electronic sources such as blogs, forums and news articles. What requires in sacrifice to be able to understand other people’s culture. I put in this paper special emphasis to trying to understand how boundaries are created and maintained between different cultures and what can be done to overcome them and create a deeper understanding of the different perspectives that exist in our world.

Kärlek och tantsnusk - när skönlitteratur blir fullitteratur: En litteraturstudie om romance-genren och dess låga status2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Seeing as how romance literature has been dubbed as trash, pesky and ugly, one might find reading such literature alien. However, the attitude surroundinng romance literature is quite ambivalent. This study aims to find what circumstances lies beneath this ambivalence, and particularly the negative view of the genre. By processing the collected material qualitatively, viewed from a gender and sociological perspective and adopting a hermeneutic interpretation, a result consisting of primarily two main focuses emerges: history and gender. History's Dime novel (romance literature's ancestor) quickly recieved negative response from scholars. Society's gender regime breeds a contempt for women, who differs from the norm solely based on their gender. After analyzing the result, the answer to this thesis can be concluded as follows: the circumstances behind romance literature's low status is due to the fusion between the disdain for scorned literature and society's disdain for women, resulting in a disdain for the genre.
