    Abstract [en]

This essay aims at analyzing how to work with factual texts with early-age pupils. I analyzehow four elementary school teachers work with reading and understanding of factual texts. Inthis survey, I study the context in which teachers work with factual texts and when theychoose to introduce them to the pupils. I also looked at what reading strategies teachers usewhen reading factual text with their pupils. As my main method, I have used interviews and Ihave collected and analyzed material relevant and useful for my study. The four informantschosen for the survey are active teachers and have worked in the profession for at least tenyears to gain a breadth in their experience. They work at two different schools. My studyshows that factual texts are an important part of the teaching for my informants, but there is adifference between the schools. One school works continuously with a genre goal and has agreater awareness of reading factual texts than the other school has.

Why should physicians read?: Understanding clinical judgement and its relation to literary experience2010Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Is literary experience of any practical relevance to the clinician? This is the overall question addressed by this investigation, which starts by tracing the historical roots of scientific medicine. These are found to be intimately linked to a form of rationality associated with the scientific revolution of the 17th century and with “modernity”. Medical practice, however, is dependent also on another form of rationality associated with what Stephen Toulmin calls “the epistemology of the biographical”. The very core of clinical medicine is shown to be the clinical encounter, an interpretive meeting where the illness experience is at the centre of attention. The physician can reach the goals of medicine only by developing clinical judgement. Clinical judgement is subjected to close analysis and is assumed to be intimately connected to the form of knowledge Aristotle called phronesis.

In order to explore how literature – drama, novels, poetry – may be related to clinical judgement, a view of literature is presented that emphasizes literature as an invitation to the reader, to be met responsibly and responsively. Literature carries a potential for a widened experience, for a more nuanced perception of reality – and this potential is suggested to be ethically relevant to the practice of medicine. The “narrative rationality” of a literary text constitutes a complement to the rationality pervading scientific medicine.

The final step in my analysis is a closer exploration of the potential of the literary text to contribute to the growth of clinical judgement, in relation to the challenges of everyday clinical work. Some of the conditions that may facilitate such growth are outlined, but it is also shown that full empirical evidence for the beneficial effects of reading on the clinician reader is beyond reach.

Den hållbara urbanplaneringens paradoxer: The paradoxes of unsustainable urban planning2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Abstract  This paper has investigated two urban planning ideals that emerges in the planning process. The study's starting point has been sustainable development to study the two existing urban planning ideals today. This means that the compact city and the green city has been the main focus of this study, but sustainability has large space with many of the aspects that is expected to lead to sustainable development. A case study was used to investigate how Karlstad is working on the issue and how the paradox appears in the municipal planning. Karlstad is currently developing a new green structure plan. The study's empirical evidence is based on two interviews with Karlstad municipality officials. The municipal documents Karlstad municipality's comprehensive plan (2012) and Olmårs densification study (2007) has been used. The municipal documents and the interview material was analyzed through meaning content. The study's analysis is based on the study's empirical and theoretical background which shows that there is a paradox in Karlstad municipality's urban planning. It also shows a trend in which cities aim to achieve the sustainable city. As the concept of sustainability is a diffuse concept, the compact city and the green city has become a complex strategy to achieve the sustainable city. This means that the green and compact city can be viewed from several different angles. Karlstad municipality's vision of the compact city is to have a compact city especially in the central parts of the city. These areas are green areas today. A planning dilemma between the aspirations of the planning arises, in which these must be weighed against each other. This means that if the green structure is prioritized then another aspect must be weighed out. In other words; there is a paradox in Karlstad municipal´s urban planning, and this means that if the green structure priority needs another aspect weighed out. This means that there is a paradox in municipal urban planning, and this is shown in this paper.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose was to find out how South African preschool teachers regard play and its relationship to learning, development and influence in play. What teachers think about children’s learning and development, and if children have any influence in their preschool play, according to the preschool teachers. The empirical material consists of interviews with six South African preschool teachers. The analysis has been conducted according to a thematic content of analysis focusing two themes; play, learning and development as one theme and children’s influence on their play as a second theme. The preschool teachers considered that play is beneficial for children in their learning and development. Play is about everything in children’s life; through play children discover the world, learn and develop in a general sense. Play also contributes to children’s learning about interaction with others.A conclusion from the study is that play is considered as an essential part in children’s lives, both in literature and in the interviews. The result shows that the preschool teachers wanted what is best for the children. As the Convention on the rights of the Child states about play: it’s about survival and development, which the teachers considered was a priority.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This master thesis focuses on teaching in reading comprehension strategies and genre knowledge. The study is based on research that shows that education in these areas is important for students' development of reading comprehension. Reading comprehension in itself is the basis for future knowledge acquisition and further studies. The purpose of this study is to investigate how teachers, active in the range from pre-school classes to third grade classes, works explicitly with reading comprehension strategies and genre knowledge.

The research is based on a web-questionnaire survey of all teachers for current grades in the subjects Swedish, Mathematics, Social studies and Science/Technology. It is limited to investigating a municipality in southern Sweden.

The results are coherent in such a way that the majority of teachers asked consider themselves to educate explicitly in reading comprehension strategies. Slightly fewer participants consider themselves to educate explicitly in genre knowledge. Also, based on the answers given by the participants, it turns out that both reading comprehension strategies and genre skills are less taught in this municipality compare to what is recommended according to science.

Explicit eller tyst kunskap – lärande mellan projekt i kommunal sektor: Kunskapsprocesser i kommunala projekt2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Various research initiatives have highlighted the importance of learning both in and between projects, which means that the entire organization will benefit from learning experiences ultimately. Learning in and between projects is therefore a critical success factor for successful projects in the future. This paper is aiming to examine knowledge conversion within and between municipal projects, with em-phasis on whether these processes differ between successful or unsuccessful pro-jects. With the methodology consisting of qualitative - deductive thematic analy-sis, conducted as a case study, - with triangulation as a validation tool – the study revealed some differences in the formalization based on a project's result. The successful project is more likely to result in explicit, rather than tacit, knowledge. This knowledge dimension is achieved through internalization, externalization and combination-processes – whereas the unsuccessful project can consist of so-cialization as well as internalization, as a result of differences in the externaliza-tion of knowledge between projects.

    Abstract [en]

This report demonstrates my research on how students may improve their progress in course with the help of journal writing. I have based my research on two courses within the Restaurant, bar and wine program at Studium Hospitality & Bakery in Gothenburg.

I came up with the idea for the research when I noticed how the students experienced little to no feedback and didn´t really understand what they should do to excel in their courses.

The purpose of the research is to develop a practical and easy-to-work journal and to find out if journal writing can improve the communication between teachers and teacher students. To achieve this I implemented a journal in two courses.

The feedback from the students was positive. They thought the journals quickly became a natural tool to be able to see their own progress and also, they were able to have an ongoing interaction between teacher and student.

In conclusion the journal has given a better overview of the progress a student makes during the course. The journal works as a tool to oversee attendance and it is also an important communication channel between student and teacher. Through the work with the journal the students document their own progression within the course, hence will be able to detect the next step of their development. The journal gives the students the opportunity to discuss which elements of the course have been critical to reach increased progression.  It has also given the teachers an important tool to develop their teaching.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to evaluate teachers attitudes towards reading homework and their thoughts regarding feedback. The study will also be looking at what type of support pupils are given regarding their reading homework and homework in general. This study will also evaluate the teachers’ thoughts on equality in connection with the pupils varying home conditions that affect how much support and help they receive with their reading homework.

I collected data for this study by using survey and interview methods. These two methods complement each other as they give a wide and in-depth-look at the questions in this study.

The results from this study show teachers attitudes towards reading homework as well as different forms of feedback that can be given. It also highlights teachers experiences when it comes to their schools homework support practice relating to reading and other types of homework that their pupils are given. Also included are the teachers’ thoughts regarding equality when related to pupils varying home conditions that affect help and support related to reading homework. The word that best describes teachers’ opinions on the current equivalent schooling is unfairness.

    Abstract [en]

Experiences are the base for sustainable learning. The purpose of this work was to determine if the teachers’ interests and knowledge of natural science matter in how they integrate natural science in a pre-school environment. In my study I chose to do semi structured qualitative interviews with both childcare workers as well as early childhood teachers, who work with children of different ages. The purpose of interviewing teachers with different educational backgrounds was to find out if education and knowledge matters when planning how children could work with (or experience) science in preschool and in other than preschool learning situations. It turned out that all teachers showed an interest in science, but on different levels. The levels of knowledge varied as well.  The study shows that the teachers’ interests and knowledge does not affect the presence of scientific teaching in preschool. All teachers believed science was an important part of the preschool environment  and most of them take trips to the forest every week

The purpose of this study is to investigate witch knowledge and thoughts children will have about the term of floating and sinking, and witch possibilities there is to make various knowledge visible in preschool physics through playing with water. The study also concern the differences and similarities between two different groups of age who have participated in the study. The study was carried out by an activity with participant observation and feedback interviews afterwards. The result shows that the possibilities to physics are many in preschool. The children expressed new thoughts and ideas who concern other phenomena in physics during the investigation and discussed similar experiments and material to examine. The result shows that the children used previous experience and knowledge to explain and ask hypotheses. They also used their language through interaction with each other to understand, create and recreate knowledge.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose with the present study is to examine house pedagogues’ perceptions of how physical factors in the common areas of group homes affect people with perception disorders. The questions that the study further answers is whether adaptations in the physical environment have been implemented or need to be carried out based on the individual's needs, and whether the persons living in the group home have been involved in the design of the physical environment in the common areas. The people who is living in the group home have disabilities in the autism spectrum and intellectual disability of varying degrees.  In order to answer these questions, I have conducted a survey with complementary interviews. The house pedagogues who participated in the study all work in group homes, which are governed by decisions under LSS, The Act on Support and Services for Disabled People.   I have analyzed the result with the theoretical starting point KASAM, which is based on Antonovsky's concept of context. Antonovsky believes that the existence is comprehensible, manageable and meaningful when internal and external stimuli come in an orderly, structured and cohesive manner.   The result of the study shows that the perceptions of house pedagogues are that difficulties in dealing with different forms of sensory experiences in the common areas of the group homes affect the people who is living there. The result also shows that adjustments have been made and that further adjustments would have to be made within the activities to meet the needs of people for the environment, and that in some of the activities, individuals have had the opportunity to influence the design of the physical environment in there living environment.   This study can contribute to increased knowledge, through house pedagogues’ perceptions, about difficulties within different forms of sensory experiences for people with perception disturbances and in what areas there is a need for adaptation.

    Abstract [en]

This study is meant to analyse the purpose of reorganizing cultural activities within the municipal political and management organization, how such a procedure progresses, and to which extend the organizational location reflects the role of cultural activities in the municipal. To depict the procedure of reorganizing cultural activities in the municipal organization I used qualitative content analysis. When I analyse the role of culture and why the reorganization was made I used idea analysis with ideal types as a tool to contrast different reasons for the reorganization. The ideal types I used was Thomson and Svenssons institutional logics and Dorte-skot Hansens cultural-political rationalities. I came to the conclusion that the sources I have used, documents of public decisions, does not include cultural-political motivations for the reorganization, though it includes motivations about organizational location. On the other hand I received an overview of the procedures progression in Forshaga municipal.

    Abstract [en]

Politicians attract their voters by promising more jobs and investment in education, health and social care. Against this background, I wonder how the situation of artists will be affected by the followingquestions:➢ What political views on the artist's position in society appeared in propositions of Socialdemokraterna and Moderaterna?➢ In what way did these propositions influence the conditions of artists?➢ How have the artists of Värmland been affected by different (Socialdemokraterna and Moderaterna) cultural policies? With my investigation I find out more about the artists' conditions on a national level, but I also investigate the situation in Värmland. By examining policy proposals and reports, I learn more about the issues. I also conduct a survey and three in-depth interviews to obtain opinions from various sources. The respondents are the cultural departments of Värmland and representatives from cultural organizations. What is clear from my research is that politicians differ on some issues, especially those relating to commercialism and artist salaries. The questionnaires shows that culture proponents may not always come from the political side. The interviews provided different points of views on the situation inVärmland, but to some extent there are difficulties for the artists who work here. If knowledge of art is low, how is one able to appreciate art and those who create it?

The purpose of this study is to use life story as a method to describe a former student’s, with her main schooling in the special school, thoughts of life during and after school, as well as the social relationships she has had and has access to. An overarching objective is to contribute to the field of knowledge from a young adult’s perspective. The study is qualitative with a life story approach. In the analysis, Bronfenbrenner’s ecological development model is used. The empirical data consists of transcriptions of conversations and instant prints from Facebook. The study is retrospective, but the study also captures the present day when the informant’s perception of life in the present day is also described. The informant perceives its later school years as more positive than earlier years. The result shows that the availability of social relationships was significantly higher during school in comparison to life as a young adult. The result also shows that the informant’s experience of the support of important adults is predominantly negative.

    Abstract [en]

For the past decades, culture has been given a role as a factor for local and regional development. But what is meant by development and in what ways culture can be of importance in this aspect can be unclear. This thesis examines the perception of the role for local and regional development of one specific cultural place and network – the cultural cooperative Not Quite in Fengersfors, Sweden. I study the way the role as developer is expressed and interpreted in the discourse of the cultural workers who are members of the network and in the discourse of public cultural policy in the region Västra Götaland and in Åmål municipality. The study shows that there are both similarities and differences between the discourses concerning how the role as developer is expressed. What differs is the focus on economic growth, which is expressed to be of great importance in the public cultural policy discourse. The cultural workers within Not Quite express a lack of interest in economic growth, or even a negative attitude towards it. They instead express a ”discourse of meaning”. For them, the main purpose of their artistic work is to create meaning and value for other people rather than economic growth. However, the practical effects of the differences seem quite small. There seem to be a balance between the different kinds of development Not Quite is expected to contribute to, and the cultural workers express a relaxed attitude to goals and expectations from the Västra Götaland region and Åmål municipality.

    Abstract [en]

There is a growing demand for pilgrimage, which in turn seems to be linked to the change in content and performance that the practice of pilgrimage is undergoing. This paper examines the emergence of Fisterra as a “new” end destination for the pilgrims. The aim of this study is to shed light on and create understanding of the destination Fisterra and the meaning of the place and the role it plays for the pilgrims. Empirically, the study is partly based on statistics and official documents and partly on interviews with pilgrims at Fisterra. The study concludes that contemporary Fisterra as the end of the journey should be perceived as an effect of the post-secular trend in Europe as well as a response to the fact that the historical goal of Santiago de Compostela is increasing

"30 km tvång": En analys av Anders Sunnas konstverk ”30 km tvång” ur ett samiskt och ett kulturpolitiskt perspektiv.2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to describe and interpret Anders Sunna's painting "30 km constraint" from a sami and cultural political perspective. In the study, the financial culture support for Sami culture is described and compared via Sweden’s cultural policy, the regions in north Sweden, as well as the Sami Parliament. The study examines which cultural concept one uses when discussing support for the Sami art. The study applies a hermeneutic approach in which the purpose is to see more perspectives and understanding of the Sami culture and art. The method is based on a qualitative approach with content-based idea analysis with the analysis tools ideal types and dimensions. Ideal types are Dorte Skot-Hansen’s three legitimacy grounds and the dimensions “anthropological-wide” and “artistic-narrow”. Through the study it emerges that support for the Sami culture is under-financed, partly because of lack of knowledge of the Sami culture, and that both the national cultural policy and the regions use mainly sociological and instrumental motivations and the artistic-narrow culture concept.

    Abstract [en]

This essay is about boundaries between, "us and them", in the Swedish culture and immigrant culture in Sweden. The focus is to examine the political interest of the citizens to understand other ethnic cultures who lives in Sweden. One question concerns how the borderlines between different cultures has been painted partly through blogs but also by the media. Is this a result of ignorance or does it depends because of the influence of certain individuals. To find this out, I will study various electronic sources such as blogs, forums and news articles. What requires in sacrifice to be able to understand other people’s culture. I put in this paper special emphasis to trying to understand how boundaries are created and maintained between different cultures and what can be done to overcome them and create a deeper understanding of the different perspectives that exist in our world.

Kärlek och tantsnusk - när skönlitteratur blir fullitteratur: En litteraturstudie om romance-genren och dess låga status2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Seeing as how romance literature has been dubbed as trash, pesky and ugly, one might find reading such literature alien. However, the attitude surroundinng romance literature is quite ambivalent. This study aims to find what circumstances lies beneath this ambivalence, and particularly the negative view of the genre. By processing the collected material qualitatively, viewed from a gender and sociological perspective and adopting a hermeneutic interpretation, a result consisting of primarily two main focuses emerges: history and gender. History's Dime novel (romance literature's ancestor) quickly recieved negative response from scholars. Society's gender regime breeds a contempt for women, who differs from the norm solely based on their gender. After analyzing the result, the answer to this thesis can be concluded as follows: the circumstances behind romance literature's low status is due to the fusion between the disdain for scorned literature and society's disdain for women, resulting in a disdain for the genre.

    Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis is based on how the two cultural institutions in Sweden have been working onincreasing physical accessibility. Based on the three objectives specified by the Swedish Kulturrådet(Swedish Arts Council). These points are 1.forming a workplace strategy, 2. Work to remove simpleobstacles in buildings and 3.Improved Web access in regard to the accessibility for physically disabled. The work regarding the accessibility goals is set on the time frame 2011-2016. The institutions studiedin this paper are Wermland Opera and Västanå Teater and how the two institutions have worked toimplement the three objectives and how the discussion about the accessibility within the two theaters hasbeen organized. The method of information gathering in this paper has been interviews with representatives from the twotheaters. The interviewees all have different roles within the institutions, both musicians, marketers andadministrative personnel have been interviewed. And the analysis in the paper is based on discourseanalysis and discourse theory, this to show how the two institutions create and maintain the discoursessurrounding accessibility in institutions buildings. The results of the paper have shown that both institutions have made a considerable effort inimplementing the goals set by the Kulturrådet. In comparison between the two institutions WermlandOpera has a much more active discussion in regard to accessibility and the work that they can do. Bothin their theater productions and in the buildings they work within. Västanå Teater has a much more “dayto day” way of handling the work with accessibility in regarding to both the personnel and the buildingsthey work in.

The purpose of this study is to explore and analyse if films, as well as being a possible tool to develop linguistic skills of the students of the upper secondary school, can be the basis to introduce and develop cultural elements and aspects related to the students’ values. A survey was responded by 36 teachers of the Swedish upper secondary school in order to study how film in general, and Pedro Almodóvar’s in particular, is used in the teaching of ELE in order to treat basic values and cultural content. The results show that teachers use film to talk about culture and some basic values, but in general the films are not used in Spanish classes very often.

    Abstract [de]

    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this study is to examine the interaction between educators and children during reading aloud and how the educators recognize this.

The study is qualitative and the empirical material was gathered through observation and interview methods. Interviews were done with three teachers, and they were observed on five occasions. The children’s age is 4-5 years.

The results show that teachers have a good knowledge of reading alouds importance for young children's language development and reading aloud is seen as an educational activity, but may have different purposes depending on the situation. The result also shows that the teachers clearly recognize children's linguistic stimulation in reading aloud.

    Abstract [en]

My purpose of this study is to investigate whether elementary school is available for students with the disability of autism. If the school is just as accessible for students with autistic syndrome as for students with asperger syndrome, or if the school is marked by equal treatment. I think this is important to highlight since I think it´s a deficiency in the school's accessibility for certain students, and dilemmas occurs regarding students in need of support. In order to provide a validated result according to me, I decided to conduct interviews with a few employees and ask all of them the same questions. The interviews I conducted was performed anonymously. However, all of them are from the same school, in order to achieve such a clear result as possible. The interviews have the nominated posts: principal, special education teacher, counselor, school nurse, teacher, leisure educator, recreation leader and teachers in the special needs school. My selection fell upon these persons since I wanted to interview the principal, student health team and some possible people who interacts with student health team regarding these issues.

As a result, I received the answers to all the issues and got confirmation of my purpose. There is a shortage of school availability for students in need of support. The school can not with their current circumstances live up to the pursuit of a school for everybody and be able to reach all students. All the persons I interviewed are aware of that. Most of them did not believe that inclusion is a good solution for either the individual in need of support, the other students, or the teacher. Because the teacher is not able to reach all students and everybody's needs can not be met. But the individuals are welcome to be included with the availability of resources and the opportunity to personally leave the classroom if necessary. The school is available for students with autism, but not enough. Although this school is struggling with the dilemma between equality and to categorize pupils to give them special support. This dilemma is the underlying reason for why the aim for it to be a school for everybody is not met.

Marknadsföring via evenemang av enmindre stad för att bidra tilldestinationsutveckling: Fallstudie Karlstad med exempel Putte i Parken ochSvenska Rallyt2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Tourism has become a global phenomenon and there are various reasons why people choose totravel. It is important to be able to offer various activities to attract different audiences todestinations. Event tourism is a phenomenon that has grown around the world in recent yearsand an events main role is to give the destination a chance to get a place on the map throughtourism. In the event tourism, sport events and festivals are a central part. This essay deals withevents with a focus on marketing and destination development. The purpose of this essay is toexamine how and why events are used in the marketing of a smaller town through a case study ofKarlstad. This is to see how it contributes to destination development and by examining themusic festival Putte i Parken and the sport event Rally Sweden, as examples, we want to see if theevents are used in the marketing of a smaller town and, if so, build a deeper understanding ofhow it works. We chose Karlstad because it is a smaller town and we wanted to highlight thephenomenon of event marketing in a smaller context. Why we have chosen Putte i Parken andRally Sweden is that they are two of the major events in Karlstad. We have used a qualitativemethod in the form of semi-structured interviews with relevant people within the tourism andmarketing sector. Moreover, a quantitative content analysis was used to see how a smaller towncan use events to promote itself and to compare this with the response from the interviews. Theepistemological starting point used in this essay is social constructivism with a hermeneuticapproach. The theories that are used to answer the purpose of the paper are marketing, eventsand destination development. The theory is divided into four parts, where previous research isexplained and then continues with the theories, and a link between them. The empirical datadescribe our interviews with people at the municipality of Karlstad, the Great Event of Karlstad,Putte i Parken and Rally Sweden and we interviewed seven people in total. The empirical dataalso presents the quantitative content analysis. In the analysis of the essay, we have linked thetheories to empirical data to answer the purpose and our questions. We also discussed how welooked at the similarities and differences of the empirical material and the theories, but also whatthe content analysis has brought to the essay. The conclusion brings together our work and givesa brief summary of the essay. We answer the head questions and provide suggestions for furtherresearch that emerged during our work with the essay.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this survey is to examine the way teachers relate to, define and teach grammar to pupils of the younger grades and the difficulties they encounter in teaching grammar. The research is based on interviews carried out among six licenced teachers, all employed in the same school and of whom one is a special education teacher. They teach classes in pre-school and primary school, grade 1¬3. Complimentary to the interviews, a general analysis of the teaching material used in their teaching, was carried out. Grammar and grammar teaching is a widely discussed topic, even if little is said about grammar teaching in the younger years. Altogether, the results of the study show, that the teachers taking part in the study regard grammar as a vague and unspecific term and the teachers define the concept of grammar differently. Another conclusion was that the attitudes towards grammar among the teachers varied widely. Some consider grammar difficult and boring while others believe it to be meaningful and easy to grasp. On the other hand, the teachers taking part in the survey agreed upon the importance of grammar and grammar teaching in the linguistic development of the pupils. The analysis of the teaching materials showed that some materials cover grammar as an clearly defined topic and formal grammatic terms were consciously used, while in others formal grammar as a topic was less evident.

    Abstract [en]

Bloggers criticizing the traditional media over poor quality journalism are being touted as potentially influential instruments of media accountability. This paper questions whether in retrospect the old order of media accountability still has relevance in an increasingly networked media environment. The aim of the paper is to suggest a framework for understanding how bloggers criticizing the traditional journalism practice can be examined in a study on media accountability in the digital era. The essay interrogates the concept of media accountability and the significance of bloggers’ criticism on journalism practice.

The aim of the study is to investigate the establishment of the Moominvalley at Skutberget in Karlstad from a cultural policy perspective. By analyzing Karlstad municipalitys cultural plan and the tourism economic analysis carried out by HUI, the study will show how the establishment at Skutberget is motivated both culturally and economically. Through analyzes of two correctly made opinion polls and three important debate articles, the study clarifies the views of the inhabitants, as well as the main views that exist in the debate. In this way, the study is both qualitatively, and to a certain extent oriented quantitatively. To gain an understanding of the course of events, a background is given to Skutberget, Moomin and the Moominvalley, before the description and analysis of the material is added. Finally, the results of the analyzes are summarized where it becomes clearer how Karlstad municipality has acted and how the citizens view the establishment.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine where a female writer who lived during the early 1900s could be positioned in the cultural producing field. To do this I will use an example of a female writer, Elin Wägner, and by using Pierre Bourdieu’s cultural political and sociological theories.

In my examination I have studied biographical writings about Elin Wägner and one of her own early works. I have chosen to define my examination to the short time of the writer’s life that adjoin to the work by her that I have selected.

The result I got when I had studied the writer and her work was that Elin Wägner can be positioned in the middle of the cultural producing field because she worked as a journalist at the same time as she wrote this novel and she became a symbol and a champion to the subject of her writing – namely women’s suffrage.

The aim of this study is to examine how teachers define the concept of inclusion and how they embody it in their Swedish teaching with reference to students in reading and writing difficulties. The method that is the basis for the study is qualitative, semi-structured interviews with five teachers.

The results of the study shows a unity among the teachers about how they perceive theconcept of inclusion as community-oriented. The teachers’ working methods also coincides where all of them put a great focus on adapting the educationfor all pupils, both in terms of full class and individual tasks. Although the teachers have a positive attitude towards inclusive education, they mean that a completed inclusion is not always preferable to the pupils’ prerequisites and needs. The result thus reflect a certain dilemma about inclusive education among the teachers.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to examine how gender and equality is represented in children's books and how educators from a didactic perspective can work with children's literature as part of their work with value-based issues. The books used for this paper is Alfons och Milla (1985) written by Gunilla Bergström and Kalle med klänning (2008) written by Anette

Skåhlberg. These books were written during different decades and both the gender and ecuality aspect is presented differently. This might be explained by the values and what was normal during the times that they were written. Kalle med klänning (2008) is challenging the normal thoughts about gender. The book Alfons och Milla (1985) presents that boys and girls are different in the sense that they do and act differently. After analyzing both these books the conclusion is that Kalle med klänning (2008) is more suitable from a didactical perspective although Alfons och Milla (1985) can also be used in a didactic purpose. Both books gives us a good ground to discuss what is typically male and what is typically female although they illustrate gender differently. Methods to enlight these questions may be to read out loud and/or have a discussion about the books to get a deeper understanding regarding gender, equality and common principles.

The purpose of this study is to examine reactions on the implementation of a method for word learning among participants in a group of pre-literate students within a beginners’ course of Swedish for immigrants. The learning method uses individual wordlists, based on personal experiences. Data were collected through lesson observations of the group as a whole and interviews with six of the students, and analysed from a pragmatic point of view, with its emphasis on life experience and social interaction as important factors for successful learning. The study focuses primarily on conceptions of activity, participation and motivation. The result shows that the students experienced differences regarding all these factors, compared to their earlier experiences of word learning. Motivation was the most positively influenced factor. When it comes to activity, more time than before was spent on homework. The study also shows that the possibility to exert an influence on the learning process through participation entails a certain amount of doubtfulness as well as increased motivation.

This study presents, among other things, which working methods apply to digital tools in Swedish teaching that are most prevalent, what teachers think of that the curriculum was revised and if teachers in today's school have the digital skills needed to integrate digital tools into teaching. In addition, it is reported what advantages and disadvantages there are with using digital tools at the primary school.

In order to collect data for my study, I used qualitative interviews where five teachers were interviewed.

With the help of the socio-cultural perspective and the pragmatism's approach to learning, my results were analyzed. Results show that the teachers had a positive attitude towards digital tools and all felt that it was necessary to integrate digital tools already at the primary school. It can also be seen from the result that all teachers were in favor of the curriculum being revised and the teachers considered that they had the necessary digital skills. The positive effects that emerged from my results were, among other things, that the students get the habit of using digital tools and that they learn to handle the various tools. The negative effects that emerged from my result were mainly that it takes a long time to use the digital tools.

    Abstract [en]

This study investigates the transnational experiences of young Taiwanese-background children living in Australia, who sojourn to their parents’ homeland during the school holidays to improve their linguistic and cultural skills, as reported by their mothers. Although this appears to be a frequent practice in the Taiwanese diaspora, showcasing the agency of this community, little research has systematically investigated this practice, and in particular its impact on the children and their families. Data for this study were obtained through online questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with mothers who engage in this practice, to gather information on family histories and participants’ backgrounds, family language policies, and parents’ perceptions of children's experiences and challenges. The data show that parents aim to enhance their children's proficiency levels in the home language as well as their Taiwanese identity. Children, however, take an agentive role with regard to identity choices, so parents’ aims are not always fulfilled. Sojourning is presented as a clear example not only of enacted family language policy, but also as an explicit management practice, positioning the Taiwanese diaspora within both their new as well as their old homeland.

    Abstract [en]

Gender related violence is a recognized problem in today’s society in the world and in Sweden. It is present in all cultures and in all types of societies. The issue has gained more attention in Sweden and in the world in the last decades, and through The Istanbul convention serious action has been taken to try to prevent and eliminate the problem. The purpose with this essay is to examine how Sweden, as a country that has signed and ratified the convention, is working preventive and legislative towards ensuring the human rights for women and towards eliminating gender related violence. The result shows that this is an important political question in Sweden, even before the ratification of The Istanbul convention actions had been taken trying to prevent the violence. After the convention Sweden has coordinated the measures taken against the problem. New government agencies have been established, only working with questions relating to the violence, and existing agencies have been given more responsibility to ensure that information and research will reach as many citizens as possible. The result also shows that Sweden’s government consider that the reason that the problem exists is the norms and the social structures in society. If these norms and structures are changed and equality between genders is obtained the problem with gender related violence will disappear and through that the human rights will not be violated.
