Buddhismens olika ansikten: Gymnasieelevers föreställningar om buddhism2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In Sweden and in the West, interest in Buddhism has increased and many have a more positive view of Buddhism than other religions. Other studies have been able to discern this positive view of Buddhism, but I have not yet found a study that has examined how students view Buddhism. At secondary school, Religionskunskap 1 is a compulsory course that all-school students read regardless of program, and thus all studentshave been taught about Buddhism. In this thesis, I try to find out how secondary school students who recently took the course view Buddhism and how well the orientalist mindset and postcolonial perspective appear in the students ́ statements.Students from three upper secondary schools participated in the survey and at each interview 5 -6 students were interviewed. The result showed that the students had a very positiveimageof Buddhism. The view of religion, prayer and ruleswas not as good and therefore the students had difficulty defining Buddhism as a religion. Two imagesappeared clearly and the first was that Buddhism is a kind of philosophy of life and the other that it is a religion but without a god and that it is a good religion. The students meant thatBuddhismcan be definiteas areligion because there is a founder, Buddha, belief in some supernatural powers like "samsara" and "nirvana", but somestudents object by saying that a religion must have some kind of God, and they understand that Buddhism doesn’t have a God. In the conversation about Buddhism, it is clear that the students are talking about a form of Buddhism. The leek's rites are notmentioned. The only ritual associated with Buddhism is meditation seen as a tool for reaching the "truth" or nirvana. There are monks, the Dalai Lama and the Buddha who can represent the Buddhists, the laymen, on the other hand, get little place in student conversations. The conclusion that can be drawn from the results is that the students' view of Buddhism is largely in line with the image found in previous research. The result that was extra interesting was that the students questioned Buddhism as a religion, something that seems to be public perceptions both within the academy and the public.

Mediatiserad religion i ramen av humor: En studie av den amerikanska sitcom-serien the Big Bang Theory2015Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Since 2007 the American sitcom the Big Bang Theory has spread throughout the world. With its twenty million watchers it is one of the most popular sitcoms of our time. The starting point for this essay is that the humourus series with the more or less geeky main characters is more than just entertainment - it is a part of the mediatization of religion. This means that media is affecting the recipients’ view on religion in general and the personal religion. As we watch TV, we get socialized into how to act in our every day life. In this case, it is about religion depicted as entertainment. Through a film analysis of a number of selected scenes from the first three seasons of the series, this essay stresses the representation of the religious traditions Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism and religion in general. On the basis of etnocentrism, exitocism and a differentiation between religious praxis and religious beliefs my conclution is that Jews are portrayed in a very ”modern” and secular way, Christians are narrow-minded and quite stupid and Hindus are doing strange rituals and believe in very unreasonable phenomena. Religion in general is portrayed as something accepted but it should be rational and religous practice has its own time and place.

Att säga "No More" till ondskan: En narrativ analys av Stranger Things-karaktären Eleven som kristusgestalt2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

School is a place for identity formation. When gender and religion are studied pupils tend to perceive religion, especially non-Christian religions, as traditional and patriarchal. Female oppression in religion is also used as a way of “othering”. Religious education is rarely presenting the women’s perspective. The purpose of this study is to analyze and compare the construction of Hindu women in Swedish and Indian school textbooks. The study was conducted through discourse analysis, using Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe’ “toolbox” for identifying group identity. As a theoretical framework postcolonial theory and postcolonial feminism were used. A total of eight textbooks were examined. The results showed that the discourse of Hindu women in Swedish textbooks was not hegemonic, instead, it consisted of four different discourse. Some of them were colonial in character. Only one textbook showed Hindu women as religious agents. Women in Indian textbooks were constructed in a different way, often described as agents, working for change in a traditional society. By studying how group identity and agency are constructed in textbooks religious education can become better equipped to enable gender and religious identities in a multicultural society. Hence this thesis claims that the research between gender, religious education and multiculturalism need further inquiry.

Bachelor Thesis in Religious Science III, by Karin Angleborg.Karlstad University, 2013. Mentor: Sören DaleviOriginal Sin and the Child- In a Historical and Late Modern Swedish ContextThe purpose of this thesis is to analyze how the view of the child in relation to the Original Sin has developed during Christian history, and what the late modern Swedish debate has contributed with.Question formulation:1. What is the historical view on Original Sin and its relation to the child?2. Which voices has participated in the late modern Swedish debate about Original Sin and the relationship between Original Sin and the child?3. How can the late modern Swedish debate about the Original Sin and its relation to the child be understood in relation to the historical perspective?A qualitative textual analysis is used as a method to answer the purpose and questions of this thesis. Different theologians from both a historical and a late modern Swedish context are analyzed for the thesis in order to identify the tendencies that influence the Original Sin debate. The results of the analysis include identification of two common themes within the historical perspective, themes which are also present in the late modern Swedish debate.

A Lutheran answer to challenges from Alasdair MacIntyre and Stanley Hauerwas: Early Lutheran theology and ethics in dialogue with present day post-secularism2014Inngår i: Svensk teologisk kvartalskrift, ISSN 0039-6761, Vol. 90, nr 3, s. 100-119Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The new traditionalist wave in ecumenical theology (for example Hauerwas, MacIntyre and Milbank) gives little and often even negative attention to Early Reformation thoughts. Lutheran theology is often depicted as a platonic ecclesiology where the ethics and politics of the “secular” society is accepted automatically also with-in the church. The article presents some of the main critical questions to Early Lutheran thinking from con-temporary theology. Then, a short historical investigation follows on some Lutheran concepts, like the “Two kingdoms doctrine” and "The three orders". I use a heavily discussed topics within Lutheran tradition, the "Table of duties” within the Catechism, to show that at least historically, Early Lutheranism can give a com-prehensive response to post-secular critics. The critique against Lutheranism in contemporary theology is not correct if the writings from Early Lutheranism (Martin Luther and the Book of Concord) are studied closely. Then, the hermeneutical question, how to deal with this historical knowledge today, remains. I claim for a middle-way between liberalism and communitarianism, that will make it possible for a wide range of interpre-tations concerning Christianity and culture in our multi-cultural society.

    Abstract [en]

This article evaluates a research project on Lutheran theology and ethics in a post-Christian society supervised by professor emeritus Carl-Henric Grenholm, Uppsala University. The project has resulted in six books and the topics of the books are: (1) original sin, (2) spiritual training, (3) political aspects of Christian ethics, (4) human bodies, pleasure and passion, (5) vocation, and (6) law and sin in nineteenth-century revival movements. As a whole, the project puts focus on twentieth-century theology and gives only little attention to what Luther has actually written. Even less attention is paid to other early Lutheran writers. Present-day Christian globalism and ecumenism are not noted at all in the books of the project. Future Lutheran scholarship can learn a lot from the failures of this project. It is important to treat the sources from the sixteenth century carefully and contextualize them in order to translate them into present time. It also seems increasingly necessary to clarify previous research traditions on the topics that present-day scholars write about. As a last insight we can see that Luther scholars, instead of locking the early Lutheran sources into modernist categories, need to reevaluate the diverse Lutheran tradition from which they form their own theological agenda, thereby clarifying how they interpret the Biblical and ancient church traditions on the topic in dialogue with the Lutheran doctrinal formulations from the sixteenth century.

    Abstract [en]

This paper examines the possibilities of using video games as a tool for education of virtue ethics. By comparing learning aspects in Marc Prensky’s theory Digital Game-Based Learning and Aristotelian virtue ethics, this paper tries to look for similarities in how each theory looks at learning. Prensky’s theory is about how one can use video games in education, which is why it is used here. This is done by using three major learning theories as a framework of how one learns. The theories are sociocultural learning theory, constructivist learning theory and Learning by Doing. Both virtue ethics and Digital Game Based-Learning are presented in detail, describing what they are, how they look at learning and how that view relates to the other three major theories. Once that is done, a comparison between Virtue Ethics and Digital Game-Based Learning is given to show what they have in common. The comparison looks at both theories views on learning and from there decides whether they work in conjunction with each other or not. The paper ends with a discussion of how plausible the usage of video games and Digital GameBased Learning is in a school environment, asking questions regarding issues with video games in general and Prensky’s theory.

    Abstract

We are all aware of the fact that we humans live in a society that changes as time goes on. How these things have affected us humans from the early 1pth century until today is on the other hand not always obvious. In this way my interest for this subject was aroused:

How the status of Christianity in Swedish society and its school has changed in course of time from the 19th century until today?

To find an answer to my question I chose to carry out a literature study. A study where I have worked with much different literature to find an answer to my question. A question that includes a secularizing process with many factors who has affects in a change process.

The results shows that society has developed from being completely centralized around the Christian faith during the 19th century so that the Christian faith nowadays works as a resource and a voluntary organisation in society. There the agriculture changes to an industrial society. The humans move from the country to the cities in an urbanizing process. Cities were built up around the industries and the growing communication network. The industry revolution developed the society we all live in today, a service society and because of all these factors Sweden has today developed into a multicultural society through a secularizing process.

Through this process can you see many traces of church-, school-, and the society process and how these factors have been affected and developed.

Key words: The development of Christianity from the 19th century until today, view of life, religion, school and society.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is threefold. The first is to provide an enhanced understanding of the anthroposophic movement's basic components and how they are interconnected to each other. Waldorfeducation is further a related example of an anthroposophic activity that is being studied. The basic idea is to study the structure of which a system of thought consist of. The theoretical framework for the study is therefore conducted according to Ninian Smart's seven dimensions of religion. This is further conducted through a hermeneutic analysis of two books. Smarts theory puts an emphasis on understanding a system of thought, rather than come to terms what religion or a system of ideas is in general. The second part is to evaluate the application of this theoretical framework according to the results from the study. The third part consists by how the result might be advantageous for teachers developing their teaching and to bring an enhanced understanding of religion in general. The results of the study find that different areas have their own expressions, but a common ground is found in a holistic worldview. A key finding is how expressions are being understood differently dependent on perspective, that is what the anthroposophic movement incorporate and functions through. The dimensional model has proven to be a viable method for both mapping features in a system of thought, as well as being beneficial in a didactic context. It’s possible to apply the dimensional model on several areas in the Swedish curriculum, concerning religious courses in the upper secondary school. Its’ ultimate merit is how different religions, system of thought, ideologies can be illustrated and discussed by the student which may enhance their understanding of a complex phenomenon.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to investigate what picture middle school teachers have of their student groups expressing their opinions on religion, both as a social subject but also as a school subject. This study also aims to investigate how these middle school teachers experience their student groups expressing their views on Islam, and Muslims, and to what extent the students are connecting Islam with religious extremism. Based on the results, the study will also investigate to what extent the participant teachers are working with conceptual change in the classroom, and for their students’ individual development in religious education. In conclusion of the results from the investigation, the study will try to perceive to what extent the student groups are in need of conceptual change. The teachers of this study are working at middle schools in Sweden. Two of the teachers participating in the study are working abroad, at two Swedish schools in two other European countries. The reason behind the participation of the two teachers working abroad is to get a wider perspective on the subject, but also to compare the results between students in Sweden and Swedish students abroad. The perspective could have been even broader if the study would have included more teachers from Swedish schools in Europe. In total the study contains fourteen middle school teachers who have been interviewed through two qualitative methods - five of the teachers through individual meetings, and nine of the teachers through online surveys. The study’s results are being presented partly with a qualitative compilation of four tables where each interview has been interpreted through four different questions with different claims. Every claim has a value between 1 and 5, or, 1 and 4, where the higher number gives a more positive result and a lower number gives a more negative result. The study’s results will show that the teachers who experience their student groups to have a more positive view on religion as a subject are also having a more positive view on Islam and Muslims. These student groups are, either never or occasionally, connecting Islam with religious extremism, and at the same time are receiving an education on the meaning behind religious extremism. The results are also showing that the teachers who experience their student groups having a more negative view on religion as a subject also have a more negative view on Islam and Muslims. These student groups are, either sometimes or very often, connecting Islam with religious extremism. These student groups are never, or rarely, receiving an education about the meaning behind religious extremism. The final result of the study will show an interesting connection between the teachers’ perception of the student groups who are connecting Islam, Muslims and the terror group IS, are also not offered an education in the subject regarding religious extremism. The teachers who perceive the student groups to not connect Islam, Muslims and the terror group IS, are offering an education in religious extremism. Therefor, the study is discussinghow middle school students would grow on an individual level when offered a deeper education in religion where world religions would be viewed through different perspectives, where the stereotypic picture of religious actions and religious practice would be outcompeted.

"Sjung Rama, Sjung Allah": Interreligiöst deltagande av manliga muslimska musiker i hinduiska religiösa sammanhang i Indien2017Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine interreligious participation for male Muslim musicians in Hindu religious context. Data for this study is collected by qualitative interviews on the previously mentioned Muslims. These interviews where performed in India, Varanasi. The collected data is analyzed through four perspectives on interreligious participation. The results show how the participation can be understood. It also shows through which of the four perspectives, which this papers theory rests on, can be used to understand how the musicians explain their participation. The four perspectives are; the participation perspective, the cultural perspective, the practitioner’s perspective and the no perspective, that enlightens the understanding of this particular interreligious participation. The result shows that a combination of the four perspectives is used to best understand the answers for the study questions. By discussing three major themes that correlates with the study question it became apparent that a combination of the different perspectives was the way to understand it. The first theme; music or faith had a majority of the use of the practitioner’s perspective. The other theme; the contact to God, shows more of a combination where the three first perspectives are dominant. The final theme: Music as a religion, is mostly a combination of the no perspective and the practitioner’s perspective. What can be said from those findings are that all of the perspectives are needed to understand how the musicians claim to experience and feel about their interreligious participation, although some of the perspectives are more used than others.

    Abstract [sv]

Swedish text with a German summery2001Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis categorises some characteristic features in the 20th century Lutheran theology, in order to create a picture of the Lutheran theology and Lutheran pre-understanding of life which leave its marks on Selma Lagerlöf as well as on other contemporary expressions of faith and worldviews. Four Lutheran figures of thought are examined as undercurrents in the discourse of the writings of Selma Lagerlöf. They are a) The understanding of Word and Faith, which includes the understanding of justification by faith. b) Faith in God as Creator and in his providence. c) The doctrine of vocatio and God's two regiments. d) The theology of the Cross that emphasises the descent of God and God's taking part in the human life. This investigation has shown that the epic of Lagerlöf can be read in terms of Lutheran theology.

The religious roots of Selma Lagerlöf are often described as ”a nothing” - a traditional background, a friendly non-doctrinal piety, and so forth. But this inconspicuous and unconscious religious background has a content, namely the Lutheran faith in the culture and society in which she grew up.

Some of the great novels such as The story of Gösta Berlings saga, Jerusalem and The wonderful adventures of Nils and some stories, sagas and legends are investigated. The study shows how the Lutheran understanding of life is expressed in these texts and their interpretation of the reality.

    Abstract [en]

In recent years studies have shown students interest in school has dropped as they mainly see the subjects being taught or their content to be irrelevant or hard to relate to.

This essay explores how using computer games, specifically Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, as a teaching tool can help increase students overall interest in the subject of religious education which should facilitate more learning. This essay will be focusing on the Judeo-Christian themes that can be found in the games dialogue, texts and the main missions. To accomplish this, a text analysis will be done of some of the conversations and texts in the game as well as a more thematic analysis of the main missions.

The texts and conversations were collected by playing through the games main missions and taking screenshots during reading, conversations and key parts of the story. These screenshots are featured in a separate appendix.

This essay follows a socio-cultural theory of learning as laid out by Lev Vygotsky and later James Wertsch. This theory argues that learning is facilitated in groups of people, and is affected by the kinds of groups that the learners are involved with. It also argues that:

    1. Everything has evolved to reach the point/form it has today.
    2. Higher mental functions come from social interactions.
    3. Human actions are transferred with tools and symbols.

The computer game in this study is shown to be one such tool, and can be used to facilitate socio-cultural learning. It can also be used to overcome barriers against learning in school that the students may have picked up at home or amongst their friends by approaching them in a more familiar manner. This makes the game and others like it a good tool for teachers struggling to reach their students through a wall of disinterest.

Religionens synlighet i sociala medier: En innehållsanalys om moskédebatter på facebook2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine how religion and the construction of new religious buildings are debated in social media. The study is based on two research questions concerning the main arguments about the mosque building in Karlstad and what kind of image of Muslims and Islam that exist. Data were collected from two Facebook-groups, Ja till moské i Karlstad and Nej tack till moské i Karlstad and analyzed and categorised with a content analysis and image analysis.

The theory of the study rests on Mattias Gardell’s definition of Islamophobia. The theory also includes Klas Borell’s definition of NIMBY and the concept of cyber-Islamophobia by Göran Larsson.

The result showed that most arguments concerning the building of the mosque were based on arguments of freedom of religion. The positive arguments claimed a mosque was good for the city and the freedom of religion. The arguments that were negative claimed a mosque would be a threat to the freedom of religion, since they claimed Islam is violent and that the location for the mosque should be used for something better (housing, school, activities, etc.). Muslims and Islam i portrayed mostly negative and stereotyped. However, these stereotypes are contradicted by Muslims who claims their religion to be peaceful and respectful.the result showed that the arguments overall was Islamophobic even though some arguments in favor to defend that Islam exist.

Förskolebarns tankar om döden2007Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Förskolebarnen tillhör samma förskola i Värmland.

    Abstract [en]

Barnens bibel (The Children’s Bible) by Anne de Vries is the best-selling children’s Bible in Northern Europe, with a circulation of nearly 900,000 copies in Sweden alone. Written in a language adapted to children it came to dominate the market from the 1960s onwards, not only in Swedish homes and churches but also in schools. This study uses the narratological tools narrator and fokalization to analyze how and in what way the biblical texts on Judas have been adapted to children in Barnens bibel. The study shows how Barnens bibel by changes in narration and fokalization develops a strong antipathy towards Judas, and that the character of Judas has a significantly more important and expanded role in Barnens bibel than he has in the biblical text.

    Abstract [en]

In recent years, scholars in the field of Religious Education have noted a tendency to theorize and intellectualize in the teaching of this school subject in Sweden and Norway. The consequence of the theorization is that many who belong to a religious tradition do not recognize themselves when their religion is presented in class. This study is based on texts and images that pupils in a Swedish primary school class (ages 11-12) made after visiting a church. The study shows how the German method Kirchenpädagogik (Church pedagogy) can give primary school pupils a broader understanding of and insights into what religion can be. By visiting a holy place, pupils acquire knowledge of other aspects of the religion in question. The article shows that the learning the pupils themselves emphasize after meeting with a religious place primarily is of aesthetic nature.
