Voting by income: Political culture of two swedish municipalities 1860-19302012In: Historisk Tidskrift (S), ISSN 0345-469X, Vol. 132, no 2, 288-294 p.Article, book review (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The purpose of this essay is to investigate why the two Swedish municipalities of Frykerud and Östmark were the only municipalities in Värmland that were forcibly merged by the state during the ”Municipality block reform” of 1971, and whether local identities played a role in the resistance against this reform.

The study is designed as a comparative case study and builds on both history and political science to analyze the topic from a broader perspective. Based on the research situation three theoretical theses have been formulated, the durability of which will be tested in the analysis part of the essay.

The study notes that Frykeruds resistance against the ”Municipality block reform” started when the reform prevented a planned retirement home construction in the municipality. In the analytical part of the essay, the author discusses how the discontent can be interpreted as symptomatic of bourgeois centralization resistance, as well as being due to the fact that traditional, local self-government as a political subject was perceived as threatened. In Östmark, the "Municipality block reform" developed into a political struggle between the reformist Social Democrats and the "reform-skeptical" conservative parties. The battle started with disagreements over the completions of investments in the municipality.

In the analysis section, the hypotheses previously formulated have been tested, and the author also formulates a new hypothesis regarding the local communities and local identities' political role in the resistance against the "Municipality block reform".

    Abstract [en]

This paper is interested in Swedish psychiatry during the period between 1930-1950,localized to Mariebergs hospital in Sweden. The purpose of this paper has been to testSjöstroms evidence of the pattern that he used to create three analytical concepts, roughlytranslated to; morally educative discipline-treatment, the production process and the idealinstitution citizen. Sjöström motivates that his concepts gives insight into one aspect of thepsychiatric expansion between 1860-1960 as well as creates an understanding of psychiatryas an institution. The source material for this paper has been patients' medical notes writtenby the chief physician of the institution. Via a method which mainly different from Sjöstromin its selection, categorization and more thorough presentation, this paper has seen the samepatterns which Sjöström has created his three concepts from. The ideal institution citizen, defined by its well behaved and calm behaviour emerges also in this papers quantitativecompilation of qualitative data as the clear majority. The morally educative disciplinetreatment, treatments and punishments that focuses on creating an acceptable behaviourrather than the treatment of insanity itself, can be seen in the adjective behaviouraldescriptions of the type well-behaved / badly-behaved which are dominant. The focus in thejournals is behaviour rather than mental decease symptoms such as hallucinations andtreatment is based on unaccepted behaviour rather than symptoms. Also, the sequential orderthat exists between badly-behaved behaviour and treatments, and well-behaved behaviourand rewards shows the focus on behaviour which the concept is based on. The previous tworesults together is the two parts of Sjöströms production process, that trough the morallyeducative discipline-treatment the institution creates an acceptable, quiet and well behavedideal institution citizen were the mental decease becomes secondary.

    Abstract [en]

The socialdemokrats’ long possession of government power from the 1930’s to 1976 gave them the opportunity to put their stamp on Swedish domestic and foreign affairs in the shadow of the cold war. The government policy in security and foreign affairs, therefore, was that of the socialdemokratic party. The stance of the government has been researched, but it lacks focus on the opposition. The purpose of this paper is to analyse Folkpartiet´s view of security and foreign affairs in comparison with government policy. The study is built around three years that are case studied: 1956, 1965 and 1974. More specific is the Folkpartiet’s stance in the foreign affairs debates in the parliament during those specific years that are being investigated. For this purpose, five questions have been formulated: What kind of goals did the Folkpartiet have with security and foreign policy during the investigated period of time? Did there exist an agreement between the goals of the government and the Folkpartiet? Did the Folkpartiet mark their own line in specific security and foreign policy questions? On which specific security and foreign policy questions was the Folkpartiet in agreement with the government? Finally, does Folkpartiet’s present stance in favour of Swedish membership in NATO have any historical substance?

The study shows that the Folkpartiet are in agreement with the government’s policy of being neutral during the whole investigated period of time. The Folkpartiet are constantly critical towards the Soviet Union, defend Israel in the state’s conflict with neighbouring countries and favour third world countries. The parties are in most agreement when the government decides to side with either part in a conflict. When the government decides not to do so, it causes criticism from the Folkpartiet.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish Prime Minister, Tage Erlander, made a speech on the 22 of August 1961 in which he dismissed speculation that Sweden was seeking to abandon its neutral stance and non-alignment in foreign policy with a view to requesting membership of the European Economic Community. The reason was that the EEC was supposed to have a political part where a connection with NATO should have existed. This speech led to a domestic discussion which has been called the most intense debate of foreign affairs in recent history. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the reactions of the other parliamentary parties to Erlander’s speech. The theoretical points draw from social constructivism, which is being operationalised into states’ identity and interests. These interests are states’ physical survival, autonomy and economic well-being. All of these three interests were present in Erlander’s speech.

The study shows that the Centre Party (Centerpartiet) was in agreement with Erlander’s stance and coincided that it was impossible to reconcile membership of the EEC with the state’s neutral stance. Both the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterna) and the Centre Party gave priority to the interest of autonomy over economic well-being. However, there were aspects of the interest of physical survival in the opinions of the Social Democrats, which might be connected with their role as the government party and therefore having the ultimate responsibility. The biggest critics were the non-socialist parties: the Liberal Party (Folkpartiet) and the Conservative Party (Högerpartiet). The latter two believed that the country should seek the oppurtunity to make an exception to the neutral stance when applying for membership and then evaluate whether it would be possible to reconcile it with non-allignment. They both had economic well-being as their major interest. Further criticism came from the Communist Party (Kommunistpartiet), who were opponents of any aspect of European cooperation. They even drew parallels between the EEC and Hitler’s vision for Europe. The Communist Party included interests of physical survival and autonomy in their argumentation. All parties were consistent in keeping to their interests throughout the period of this research.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Multi culture is a subject which many like to discuss. This essay will give the reader some teachers’ definitions and attitude about the multi culture conception. The main purpose with this essay is to give the reader a picture of how you can work with multi cultural classes. The work is based on research methods – qualitative interviews, which I have done with four teachers. To give the essay a structure, I have used categorical and summery.

To use alternative teachings methods, for example live stories, in that way you give the multi cultural a more important and enriched way. The pupils get the feeling that people see them and they dare to chare theirs stories with other people.

Thanks to alternative education, you can give the story a more living character. To have a good parents contact, and let the parents know their importance to their children schooling, that is an impression which have been stronger under this study.

    Abstract

This paper is a study in press reception with the intent to examine how twelve female actionheroes have been portrayed in Swedish media between 1974 – 2006. The purpose is to discern patterns and differences in how the female movie character is received by their contemporary journalists and to relate their views to social and gender related theories.

The female actionhero is an independent and brutal character, often alone and without a mother or a child. This separates her from typical female roles, which historically been characterized by passivity, fear and dependency on the male characters in the movie.

The female actionhero as a character opens up for complex reception. One perspective in the research identifies the independent woman as a feministic icon. Other researchers and writers relate her masculine attributes, sexual charisma and the movies' financial driving force as a projection of male fantasies.

The summarization of the critique expressed by Swedish press journalists based on 124 movie reviews and other film related articles expose noticeable differences. From a girl who stood in the shadow of male heroes to a coarse woman who surpass them. But there are still areas in which 30 years haven’t changed a thing. Critics still fixate on the female heroe's physical appearance and her achievements are with few exceptions compared to men, and not other women. The critic reception also establishes that journalists since 1974 have become less inclined to apply gender or other social theories to the movies and female heroes. A gender related perspective is despite an independent and strong woman in the background for other perspectives while male critics are in comparison to female critics significantly more inclined to apply feministic theories to movies with female actionheroes.

    Abstract [en]

Monuments are raised all over the world of several different reasons. A monument dosen´t only refer just to itself, it also tells something about the historical context they are risen into. The overall purpose of this study is to try to reveal how history is used through the process, and rising of the monument "Vindarnas Boning" in Karlstad, Sweden 16/6, 1967. The historical narrative around this monument is about to show the importance of the esthetics, the main forces around the monument and last, how the monument legitimacy is maintained. Throughout those analytic tools, according to this study, I will try to examine possible other reasons behind this monument than the official one, who is to act as a remembrance of the finnish immigrants who settled in the unpopulated deep forests of Sweden and enabled to maintain a minor community separated from other influences, during the 16 th century and onward. The 1960´s is characterized by the large working movements between Sweden and Finland. Also the Finnish authorities launches an economical campaign in Sweden to broaden their export possibilities. This campaign is about to show the new modern Finland, with increasing own independence from Soviet influences. Referred to this, the study shows how other groups in the society possible uses history for their own purposes, the cultural ties between Sweden and Finland are strengthen through this monument, wich gains advantages in other areas as well. Referred to the economics and the thoughts of a Nordic cooperation, which some elements wishes to broaden. Through the historical narrative this study reveals actors who has strong ties to these goals. Because of this, there might be a reason to ask if the official remembrance is the only factor that is linked to this monument. This study connects the use of history through monuments with ideological reasons. This perhaps, can be a perspective to have in mind, when visiting the monument "Vindarnas Boning" next time, or other monuments as well.

    Abstract [en]

The overall aim of this study is to analyse history teachers’ understanding of the school subject history. The aim have also been to uncover what factors the history teachers say have affected their understanding of the school subject. Based on survey and interview methods, the question that this study deals with is: in the light of which general understanding of the school subject history, do the teachers make didactic choices on a daily basis?

The first theme is biographical. The teachers’ life-history is taken into consideration and several factors in the teachers’ background and the school environment have been identified. It also seems as if the teachers’ understanding of the school subject goes from an elementary and searching approach to one that is more complex and convinced.

The second theme is a more structural approach. The results shows three major orientations among the teachers’ general understanding namely, educational (bildung) orientation, critical orientation and identity orientation. Even though a main orientation can be seen among the teachers, an important result is also that the orientation is overall complex.

At the most general level some patterns can be seen. First the connection between the teachers’ biography and their general understanding of the school subject. In the understanding of the school subject, it is also notable that teachers relate in different ways to history as science, history as identity and history from an ideological viewpoint. It is also possible to note some signs of change in the school subject history that follows a lager historiographical context.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

New York state i USA.

    Abstract [en]

The Irish immigrants have been an important part of London throughout the centuries. Their presence can be found from the 17th century and onwards. Initially occupied as seasonal workers in agrarian fields the Irish later found alternative ways of supporting themselves as the Industrial Revolution transformed the whole of England. Despite their vital importance to the construction of what was to be known as "the modern Babylon" the Irish have been victims of both social prejudice and maltreatment. Some historians have imposed a comparison between the Irish in England and the African slaves in the United States. They have viewed the Irish with the spectacles of modern racism and in their presumptions created an unfair image of the relationship of the British and the Irish as the European equivalent of that of the African slaves and the American slave owners. Not content with superimposing the image of "the racist Englishman" solely on the 19th century, scholars such as L. P Curtis and R. N. Lebow have sought to explain any questionable act committed by the British as a sign of xenophobia towards their Celtic neighbours, whether it be Cromwell’s Irish Campaign in 1649 or the lack of British aid during the Great Famine in Ireland in the 1840s.

This essay sets out to examine how Irish women were perceived at the Old Bailey Session House in London. Women have always received verdicts of a more lenient character than their male counterparts. It is therefore plausible to suppose that, if Cutis and Lebow are correct in their assumptions, Irish women should receive harsher verdicts and a higher frequency of those committed than those acquitted of crimes in comparison with their British counterparts, which simply is not the case.

A TEXTILE WEB Jewish immigrants in Gothenburg in the early nineteenth century and their impact on the textile market2015In: Scandinavian Journal of History, ISSN 0346-8755, E-ISSN 1502-7716, Vol. 40, no 4, 485-511 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The 1830s has been singled out as the decade in which the Swedish consumer market really started to expand. In the same period, cotton textile production expanded in the Gothenburg area. A small group of immigrant Jewish families played an important role in this development. The impact of Jewish merchants on the growth of the consumer goods market is consistent with international research. Their entrepreneurial activities and renewal of textile production and trade have been emphasized. This has, however, not been paid much attention to in the Swedish research. This article discusses what impact the Jewish immigrants had on the increase of the textile market in Gothenburg and its surroundings. Through a couple of case studies and examples, we want to elucidate the significance of Jewish textile production and trade: Jewish calico printers started up mass production of fashionable fabrics in the 1820s. Furthermore, Jewish merchants spread their goods to customers in the countryside in cooperation with Swedish pedlars. The authors also discuss different reasons why the Jews played such a significant role during this particular period: The role of the legislation, the Jewish textile tradition, access to capital, networks, effective distribution, a growing consumer demand, and the geographical context.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to enlighten the punishment prisoners received for crimes they’ve committed in Karlstad prison during the years 1870-75 and 1900-05. I intend to investigate the different disease that flourished in prison. Where there any connection between the punishments some prisoners received and those who became sick? The paper is based on two questions:

    1. Are there any connections between those who were punished and those who became sick?

    2. Where those who were punished more often sick than those who weren’t?

The result of the papers was that the people that received punishments where more often sick than those who didn’t. A problem that occurred was that the journal of sicknesses weren’t covered for the years that I intended to investigate. The files did not cover the years from 1901-1905. There are four years missing.

The sicknesses that were most frequent in prison during the investigated years were: bronchitis, diarrhea, intermittence and gastric problems. Bronchitis is an obstructive pulmonary disorder characterized by inflammation of the bronchi of the lungs, diarrhea is an often occurring loose bowl movement. Intermittence is a sickness that clogs the major arteries mostly in the legs. Gastric problems involve many conditions such as gastric catarrh, inflammation of the stomach and various diarrheas with vomits. To help me with identifying the medical terms I spoke frequently with physician Frida Andersdotter.

Another part of the paper was discussing how network inside the prison may have looked like. To help me with this part of the paper I used a book Hreinsson, Nilsson. It’s a book about how one could find and identify networks by drawing a net of individuals and connecting them to each other. There were three independent groups working almost at the same time with network. Two of them were located in America and one in Manchester, Britain.

My thought about finding and displaying network in Karlstad prison is not by studying the files in archives, but to look at villages or cities and identifying the persons who became imprisoned. The file in prison does not have the credibility to connect the prisoners to one another. I think one have to study the individuals before the imprisonment.

    Abstract [en]

From Reagan to Trump: Populist expressions within the Republican Party 1980–2017 is a bachelor thesis by Angelica Carlsson. The aim of the thesis is to explain populist expressions within the Republican Party in the United States during the period 1980–2017. Populist expressions in political speeches by the presidents Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush and Donald Trump are investigated and graded based on Kirk A. Hawkin's criteria of populism. The thesis is also taking the theoretical terms thin and thick populism into consideration. In order to explain the populist expressions the historical context and the historical development of the Republican Party is taken into account.

The main findings of the thesis is that Reagan's and Trump's speeches has the highest degree of populist expressions, while Bush's speeches has a lower degree of populist expressions. The study explains this from the historical context, where 1980 and 2016 were characterized by more political instability than 2000. The study illustrates how populism does not arise from nothing and should be understood in relation to the historical context.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

This essay examines possible differences in the historical vision between three recent text books of history for the senior level of the secondary school. As a method I have divided the research into one quantitative analysis and one qualitative textual analysis. In my quantitative research I have used tools of analysis, structure of contents, style, selection of content and the subject’s percentage of the book. The qualitative research is a text analysis of the French revolution based on the goals of achievement for the senior level of the secondary school, and the theories of Anders Berge and Knut Kjeldstadli. In the quantitative research on the French revolution and World War 1 it showed that the difference between the books in the structure of contents is not very big. In the difference between the selection of contents and the percentage of the book it shows that one book has a greater selection than the other two, while the difference in percentage is not very big. As far as the historical vision of the French revolution is concerned it shows that the text books somewhat agree with each other regarding the reasons behind the revolution. The people’s circumstances are described in an equal way where the woman’s role is put in the dark and plays a minor part in history.

    Abstract [en]

This essay is about the political participation in three communities in Värmland between the years of 1919-1950. The research is done in Karlstad, Östra Fågelvik and Nyed. The purpose of the essay is to find out if there were an existing correlation between were people lived and communal political participation. The first question in this essay is whether there were any differences between women in an urban environment, Karlstad, and women in the countryside. The second question is about the difference between political participation women and men. As a help to understand the result the essay use Yvonne Hirdmans theory about gender contracts and four different factors for political participation. The factors are Social bases, mobilizing, the meaning of the votes and martial status. The source material used in the essay is voting journals and SCB:s election statistics over communal elections in Karlstad.

The essay is a quantified case study whit complementary parts of stratifying. The study end ups in a quantitative accounting method whit diagrams for voting, actual political participation and political participation in percent. The result show that women from the countryside had a higher participant when it came to voting. The men voted in a higher rate than women did in all the societies researched. The result both retract and confirm earlier research.
