    Abstract [en]

This study is about the project Sharaf’s heroes, which aims to change - the attitudes of young men with roots in honour culture. A qualitative method has been used, with four interviews with men who work within the organization. The aim of the study has been to increase the understanding of how work against honour related violence and oppressions can be dealt with, in order to decrease it. The focus in this study lies on the young men's own view on and experiences of honour culture and their work with the project Sharaf’s heroes. Our issues are as follows: What are Sharaf’s heroes and what is the purpose of the project? Which methods are used in their work? Which problems and obstacles will it be with the work in the project and which result has the project given so far? What does an honour culture consist of and what kinds of problems does it cause? Which role has young men living in honour culture and how can they work in order to change it?

Our result shows that the project’s purpose of the project is that it will work as an aid organization in order to prevent and to change attitudes. Additionally, it will function as a knowledge bank for different authorities when it comes to honour related violence. The main method in the project is the dialogue group, where the work starts from underneath through the young generation's men. The result that the project has given so far shows that when the dialogue between children and parents start, a process begins which leads to change the current prevailing attitudes. The problems with the work in the project are above all that there is a lack of cooperation within the authorities, and that authority’s knowledge about honour related problems is inadequate.

Keywords; Honour, Young men’s role, Sharaf’s heroes, Honour related violence and oppression, Socialization, Familystructure.

Empowering single mothers in Iran: Applying a problem-solving model in learning groups to develop participants' capacities to improve their lives2013In: British Journal of Social Work, ISSN 0045-3102, E-ISSN 1468-263X, Vol. 43, no 5, p. 1-20Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Since 2000, a problem-solving model has been taught to the Society for Protecting the Rights of the Child, and teachers and  students of social work in two universities in Iran. Since 2006, with the initiation of UNICEF, social workers, psychologists  and even some psychiatrists in Iran have been learning this model. In 2008, a group of researchers created an empowerment-oriented  psycho-social group and private intervention project to assess whether a group of Iranian single mothers could use this model, which was traditionally used by professionals only, to effectively and independently meet challenges in their own lives. Our results show that all women used the model effectively and, consequently, made more deliberate decisions to improve their life situations. Some of the women succeeded in finding a job and many improved their family relationships. This study suggests that empowerment-oriented social work can help many clients to achieve their goals, and that this psycho-social intervention project can be a useful model for social work in Iran and many other societies.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to figure out how foster parents view their task and the responsibilities that the task entails, what gives foster parents motivation to continue with the mission, as well as what kind of emotional attachment the foster parents experience they get to the placed children.

This study consists of six interviews, of which five of them were individual and one pair interview. The gathered material was analyzed from content analysis. Three themes emerged in the results which were: The mission as a foster family, why foster family and the everyday of foster families. The results were then analyzed through previous research along with Antonovskys concept sense of coherence, SOC and Bowlbys attachment theory. The results showed that foster families have different views depending on how long they have been foster families, what kind of children they’ve had but above all, what motivated them to start a foster family.

    Abstract [en]

Research have concluded that social relations are an important factor that counteracts stress and increase comfort levels at the workplace. The purpose for this study has been to examine how, and if, different background factors affect the employee’s social relationships and job satisfaction but also if social relationships affect job satisfaction. The survey was conducted as an exploratory survey in which the dependent variables were studied on the basis of gender, age, period of employment and project. It turned out that no statistically significant relationship was found between background variables and job satisfaction. However, a statistically significant relationship was discovered between respondents' social relationships and job satisfaction level. Age and period of employment are factors that affect social relations inside the company.  In summary, the study provides support to theories that strong social support in the workplace improves job satisfaction. Age and period of employment create the conditions for social relationships between its employees and managers. There are also some indications in the data to suggest that age affects the employees job satisfaction.

"Det akuta löser jag snabbt, men det är akut hela tiden": En kvalitativ studie om lärares och rektorers hantering av arbetsuppgifter under stress.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Aid administrators meet many elderlies in their professional role. The aim was with an from a theoretical perspective on ageism study aid administrator's experiences of discrimination against older people. In this study, the question was asked how they feel about discrimination of older people in society and what they think can strengthen the position for elderly as a group. In this study five aid administrators were interviewed about their experiences of elderly people’s discrimination. The results were analyzed using an ageism perspective with a qualitative content analysis. The result shows that aid administrators see ageism in society by meeting with older people and through social perception. They stated that discrimination, prejudice and stereotypes in society that cause problems for older people like, exclusion, poor treatment and a contributor to a negative self-image. Older becomes less represented than other groups, overrides and availability in society is not adapted to their needs and abilities. Aid administrators argue that the perception of the elderly is an area for improvement. To succeed aid administrators, see the need for knowledge about ageism and that society listens to what older people want and need. It is society's duty to combat discrimination and protect human equivalence.

Bridging Boundaries in the Borderland of Bureaucracies: Individual Impact on Organisational Adaption to Demanding Situations in Civil and Military Contexts2013Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to reach a deeper understanding of how boundary spanners are bridging boundaries between uniformed bureaucratic organisations and their environment, characterised by demanding conditions.

The main part of this thesis is based upon empirical data gathered through 71 interviews with Swedish civil and military informants from several uniformed organisations. Four articles have been included in this thesis in order to address the overarching aim.

The results show that boundary spanners are crucial to the adaption of uniformed organisations to demanding conditions. A number of aspects that are included in the process of organisational adaption have been identified. One of the tasks is to balance between structuring and improvisation where much is at stake. The other task is to create confidence among the involved actors and contribute in different ways to create a sense of symmetry between partners. Finally, the third task for boundary spanners is to recognise improvised roles such as spontaneous links in order to maintain stressful conditions and bridge a gap in the bureaucratic organisation.

The present thesis contributes to sociological theory of emotions, disaster management and military studies through a common denominator, namely the demanding context. Taken together, the findings increase awareness of how organisations act towards their environments and how individuals, especially boundary spanners, adapt the organisation to its environment. For leaders and managers, it is important to make decisions, provide mandates and authorisation, as well as invest confidence in boundary spanners. The hierarchical chain may remain in existence, but it can be made shorter and more transparent through this kind of knowledge.

Structure versus freedom of action: Leadership during the rescue operation following the 2004 tsunami2010In: International Journal of Emergency Management, ISSN 1471-4825, E-ISSN 1741-5071, Vol. 7, no 3-4, p. 304-322Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to develop a theoretical understanding of leadership during a complex rescue operation following a major disaster in a foreign country. The analysis followed a grounded theory approach. Seventeen informants from three Swedish authorities were interviewed on leadership in the emergency handling of the 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia. A theoretical conceptualisation was developed which includes three superior categories: antecedent conditions, situational constraints and core aspects of leadership. Within the last-mentioned superior category a core variable was identified: a balance between the need for structure and the need for freedom. Leaders who strive to create structure at the expense of freedom of action are less inclined to delegate and more likely to wear themselves out. Conversely, those who strive to create great freedom of action bypass many links in the organisational chain, thus 'short-circuiting' the organisation as a whole.

The inadequacy of an ordinary organisation: Organisational adaptation to crisis through planned and spontaneous links2010In: International Journal of Organisational Behaviour, ISSN 1440-5377, no 15, p. 87-102Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Emergency response organisations face the challenge of having a bureaucratic structure and meeting extreme situations where predefined directives cannot cover all possible emerging contingencies. The aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the concept of links within the framework of emergency response agencies during severely demanding operations. The empirical data are based on fifty in-depth interviews from three crisis events. The results suggest that collaboration during crisis management is facilitated by two types of links—planned and spontaneous—and both can act vertically and horizontally. The results imply an elaboration of the organizational concept boundary spanners.

    Abstract [sv]

Man kunde i högre grad välja hur man ville leva sitt liv.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate how the “woman” is depicted and created on fashion and lifestyle blogs. I have done this from a “doing gender” perspective. I have also used Goffman’s theories of identity values and stigma.

I been working with an eclectic approach to the choice of method and I have therefore been using different methods in which content coding on text and symbolic interpretation of images has been the most prominent. These codes were created based on my theoretical framework.

The result of my analysis is that gender is done on fashion and lifestyle blogs relative to the two categories, sex categorization as well as gender. This doing appears in different forms in which the body´s appearance, its decoration and individuals´ behavior and opinions are of central importance. Identity values and stigma are two phenomena that are manifest on this kind of blogs. These two phenomena occur in relation to both sex categorization and gender.

Man litar inte på främlingar och speciellt inte män2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Informanterna kände stor glädje i arbetet då kundmöten kunde resultera i mycket energi.

Nyckelord: emotionellt arbete, emotionshantering, hälsningsceremonier, servicepersonal, interaktionsritualer, regioner.

    Abstract [en]

This study is about how to develop younger teens problem solving ability and their social competence. The study carried through by using a qualitative method, two observations and ten interviews. The observations where preparatory for the structured interviews. The respondents where pupils in a class were it is an ongoing project which purpose is to develop childrens problem solving ability and social skills with cognitive training and an empowerment based reasoning model that is called rahyab. Rahyab is a Persian word and it means path- finding. Focus has been on the pupils experiences of working with the model and the school project. The studies approach is to examine how younger teens problem solving ability can be developed by cognitive training and social pedagogics? Other questions that we’ve been trying to answer are: what have the younger teens learned from rahyab and it’s steps? How has the younger teens experienced working with rahyab? and do the younger teens feel that they have and will have use of rahyab?

The results and analysis shows that the younger teens can develop their analytic thinking and thereby also their problem solving ability. They feel that they now have a better understanding for how other people think. This means that they appears to have experienced a development in their social competence. The results shows, with the support of prior knowledge, that younger teens problem solving ability can be developed by cognitive training and social pedagogics.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to try to interpret interactions between social worker and adoptive parents during the adoption process from a power perspective. The study was inspired by a hermeneutic inductive approach because we were interested in the interpretation of the empirical material. The study was conducted using four qualitative interviews with a total of seven people, four adoptive parents and three social workers. The collected material is then analyzed using a content analysis. To interpret the contact between the adoptive parents and social workers, we have used a power perspective. Our study showed that the applicant, generally speaking, was positive to that an investigation was made based on “the child’s interest”, but experienced some of the questions as intrusive. They found that the assessment made was crucial for the decision, and that it easily can vary from case to case for the decision and that the assessment can certainly vary in different cases. The social workers did not feel that they had any noticeable power, because they do not make the final decision. Their assessment was partly based on laws and guidelines that set the context, for example, how old the applicants may be and the requirement that the applicants must be married. Assessments are also made on the social worker’s individual characteristics based on the applicant's personal qualities such as insight and ability to care for a child.

"Karlstads Matchning" - från bidrag till jobb: En studie om svensk arbetsmarknads- och integrationspolitik samt en utvärdering av ett integrationsprojekt i Karlstads kommun.2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Work dominates people’s lives and everybody’s right to work often means that it’s also everybody’s obligation to work. The political system presupposes that everyone who can work also wants to work and should work. In order to receive income support from social services is that everyone who is supposedly able to work should be available to work. Economic support entails a liability to look for work and to agree to labor market measures.

Research presented in this essay shows that it is more difficult for immigrants than for native Swedes to establish themselves on the Swedish labor market. As an example of a labor and integration political measure this essay will look at an integration project within Karlstad’s municipality. Immigrants are over-represented amongst people with income support in Karlstad’s municipality. The labor- and social services administration in Karlstad admits that they have previously failed to help immigrants to find work and that they are below the average of Sweden as a whole when it comes to employment rates for immigrants.

In 2008 the work- and social services administration therefore decided to try something new to change these statistics. Together with the staffing company Manpower the labor- and social services administration started cooperation with the purpose to help immigrants so that they can economically support themselves. This cooperation got the name Karlstads Matchning. Behind Karlstads Matchning lies a strong belief that it is always better for people to work than to be unemployed and dependent on income support. In less than a year 55 people received one year contracts through Manpower. By interviewing 15 of these people I was hoping to find out what they think about their situation and how they experience Karlstads Matchning.

The essay begins with a formulation of the problem background and purpose. The purpose of this essay is to evaluate Karlstads Matchning by letting the people who this co-operation if for speak up and express their thoughts, emotions and standpoints. Another part of the purpose of this essay is to summarize Swedish labor market- and integration politics. Ethnic discrimination and social exclusion will also be discussed.

The central role of work within labor and integration politics are presented though a number of theories and concepts in order to give the reader of this essay an idea of which theoretical references this essay is using.

Thereafter there is a presentation of Karlstads Matchning together with some thoughts from managers and initiative-takers of Karlstads Matchning.

The method chapter entails a short description of the chosen method which base is qualitative with interviews as the practical method. This chapter describes how the examination has been conducted, ethical dilemmas, processing and interpretation of the material that has been collected and reliability and criticism of the used sources.

The next chapter consists of an attempt to compile the collected material where the interviews are presented under different themes. The interviews are also presented through a gender perspective as the interviews showed differences in answers between men and women.

Thereafter follows a compilation of the overall results of what has happened with the employees and Karlstads Matchning s little more than a year after the co-operation started. My personal interpretation is that Karlstads Matchning has had more costs than benefits and that the municipality should go over their routines before any new projects or co-operations with external parties are started.

Two out of 55 people who got employed through Karlstads have moved on to permanent jobs and one person got a temporary summer job. 34 people have moved on the un-employment. The interviews with the employees showed that those who have the least amount of education or work experience are those who appreciated Karlstads Matchning the most, the others are very critical. Some people express their gratitude of having had the chance to get work, others are very critical and discontent.

The essay is ended with a general critical discussion about Swedish integration politics and how it often works excluding rather than including. The conclusion is that decision makers must redirect the integration politics so that it on a societal structural level stops pointing out “immigration specific” problems so that it becomes a transparent, including and natural part of labor politics in general.

    Abstract [en]

Female genital mutilation (FGM) attracted much attention in the west in the 1970’s, when the immigration to the west from countries where FGM was practiced increased. When Waris Dirie published her autobiography Desert flower: the extraordinary journey of a desert nomad in 1999, the phenomenon got on the carpet again. Since FGM is a custom that has been practiced for thousands of years all over the world and is still beeing practiced in a number of countries today, an interest was awakened for examining the circumstances surrounding the phenomenon. Where, how and why did this apparently inhumane and irrational custom arise and how come it still exists today? What is at the bottom of it? How is FGM related to religion, culture, gender, power and so on?

Since it seemed to be about a very complex phenomenon a decision was made to keep the purpose of the essay quite broad and extensive. The hypothesis was that FGM could be explained and understood as a sociological phenomenon and this is what has been examined, analyzed and emphasizwd through out this essay. The sociological theories falls within the framework of social phsychology, and as a compliment to these theories there has also been a use of intercultural perspectives and gender- and ethnicity perspectives.

The method is qualitative data gathering. A large selection of books, articles and websites have been used. Data analysis has been done throughout and integrated with the data gathering process. In the analysis, theory is related and connected to the pheonomenon FMG. Finally there is a closing discussion in which personal reflections and conclusions are discussed.

The result shows many different sociological, intercultural and gender- and ethnicity related explanation models of how FGM can be explained and understood as a sociological phenomenon. It has also proved interesting to draw paralleles between the circumcised woman and the “equal” western woman. There is no simple explanation to why the custom is still beeing practiced today, there are many different aspects and factors involved. What is important though, is that you relate to the phenomenon with a certain degree of cultural relativism and that you pay regard to the customs complex and multi dimensional nature.

    Abstract [en]

The interest in emotional labor has increased due to the development of norms that service workers always should be nice and fond have increased. Research in this area exhibit both negative consequences in form of burnouts and positive in form of an increased understanding in other people. The aim of the study was to create an understanding of how a couple of train conductors experience their work in relation to the feelings, roles and relationships that surround them. The study is based on four qualitative interviews that have been analysed with emotion and interaction oriented theories. The results show that the use of emotions was common in the profession and the respondents of the study claim to act a role which they adapt to the customers’ expectations. These expectations can sometimes end up in a conflict between the professional role and the private role where the own feelings and respect weights more than the adaption to the customers’ expectations. The respondents in the study were found to have created different strategies, open and hidden, that can be used in order to get the customer to be notified of their behavior as well as it works to manage the emotional labor. The results also show how the colleagues and the opportunity to go away and discuss difficult customer meetings are important factors when it comes to relate to the emotional labor. Overall, there is room to affect the emotional labor which also been proven to be beneficial for the job satisfaction.

The purpose of this examination was to se how exercise affects the learning capacity. In this work I have chosen to integrate natural science with sport and the target group was a primary department. The two areas I integrate with sports were: the digestive system and knowledge of deciduous trees. I split the class in two different groups. One group got to have a theoretical lesson and the other one got to have an exercise lesson. The next day I asked the children to fill in a paper with questions about what they had learned the day before.

When I later studied the answers that I got from the question paper, the result showed that exercise affects the learning capacity in a positive way.

That shows that the more senses that is activated the more you learn.

    Abstract [sv]

studera hur tre organisatoriska mörka egenskaper; organisatorisk anorexi, organisatorisk

    sina tilldelade arbetsuppgifter.

Nyckelord: Mörka organisatoriska sidor, organisatorisk anorexi, organisatorisk girighet,

You can find a healthcoach working in several arenas in the society. Some examples are companies, schools, and training faculties and so on. They are using different working methods when meeting people, but most of the time the work is about helping people with healthprevention and healthpromotion after the individual's lifesituation. "Healthwave - sense of balance in the daily life" is a project which purpose is to strengthen the healthcare at Karlstads University. The project started in spring 2005 and the purpose was to improve the physical and psychosocial health among the employees and through that, decrease the sickness rate. Further on, the projects intentions were to increase the workers health-awareness to create an opportunity for them to affect there lifestyle. The project is now in the final act and an annual report of the project is a pressing issue.

Our purpose with this essay is to investigate if the Healthwave mainly purpose involving the physical and psychosocial health been improved and if the employees health-awareness has increased. We have also chosen to investigate which role the healthcoaches had for the involved workforce in the project "Healthwave".

We have taken part of a previous investigation that involves how healthcoaches can work. There intervjues were carried out at school, the county's healthcare organization and Karlstads university's cooperative partner, Karlstads Medical Training Faculty (KMTI), (Aristidou & Häljeskog, 2008). In addition to this we also did one more interview with the one who has the managing position for the project at KMTI. We used information from Healthwaves two questionnaires. The first one was created 2005 and the second 2007.

The results were showing that healthcoaches are using similar working methods even if the are on different arenas. They are working after every individuals life situation. Knowledge based fact is what they all are using in there work and this combined with there experience creates the working method. They are there as a support for the customers and are trying to express knowledge in an empowering way.

The results are showing that the employees at Karlstads University are presumably thinking on there health more often and are more active on their sparetime. The development shows that the experience of a general healthcondition has improved. The long during sickness rate has decreased with about 60 % and what it seems, a higher health-awareness had been real.  However we can't give any reliable results because of the anonymity and big losses of the questionnaires. We made a fall off analysis and a contet analysis to make our results more reliable.

    Abstract

During my university trip to South Africa I visit a black township called Lingehlile. There I examined the life situation and education for children and youth with mentally disabilities. I was interested in knowing more about what basic condition they have, period of school and what kind of support they get outside the school. The subjects that I have handled are a school for all, support for the person with mentally disabilities and their family, the opinion of the society, education and life after school. I got my result by two interviews. One was with the principal of a school for handicapped children and the other one was with a teacher at that school. Also I have visit a school for handicapped in Cape Town. In Sweden we are talking about a school for all were everybody are welcomed irrespective of handicap. We have laws that stand behind people with mentally disabilities and they can get support and service. With this report I would like to throw light on the situation in another country, in this case South Africa. My investigation showed that they are struggling for a better society for the people with mentally disabilities but they have not come as far as Sweden. This is because of the bad economy and the government. During the trip I met a lot of people that are fighting for better conditions and a rise are slowly but sure on its way.

    Abstract [en]

The subject of the thesis originates in the discovery of a pattern in Collins’ theory of interaction rituals. The pattern indicates that several important ideas and concepts in Collins’ theory can be conceived as individuals’ experiences of similarity. Based upon the discovery of this pattern, the aim of the thesis is to develop the basic features of a new theory that explains interaction rituals by centering upon individuals’ experiences of similarity. In order to accomplish the aim, the essay discusses four aspects of interaction rituals. In connection to the first aspect, an explanation is presented that reveals why individuals who experience similarity give each other support in their interaction rituals. Discussing the second aspect, the concept of effervescence of similarity is presented, which explains why experiences of similarity are crucial for generating emotional energy in interaction rituals. When developing the third aspect, a complete description of similarity theory is presented. Similarity theory explains interaction rituals by referring to individuals’ experiences of similarity. Finally, in the discussion of the fourth aspect, similarity theory is tested against empirical research. The concluding sections argue for ways in which similarity theory may contribute considerably to the understanding of interaction rituals. Also, suggestions for further research are presented.

Symbolic smoking: A quantitative survey of peers’ impressions of a smoking adolescent girl, and a theoretical analysis of the symbolic capital generated by the impressions2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the present study, I analyze adolescent girls’ smoking through a unique combination of a quantitative survey of impressions and a theoretical analysis based on new elaborations of Bourdieu’s concept symbolic capital. The method of the study is three-fold. First, focus-group interviews elicit relevant impressions of adolescents in the eyes of peers. Second, a questionnaire survey distributed to adolescent peers quantitatively investigates how impressions of a girl on a picture differ depending on whether or not she has a cigarette. Third, a theoretical analysis based on elaborations of Bourdieu’s theories scrutinizes the results of the questionnaire survey. The results of the questionnaire survey indicate that smoking adolescent girls generate impressions of being significantly less likable, more popular, more conceited, less kind, less shy, more liable to bully, less funny, more deceitful, and less compassionate than non-smoking adolescent girls. In the elaborations of Bourdieu’s theories, I introduce a division of symbolic capital into two forms: symbolic virtue capital, generated through impressions of virtues, and symbolic power capital, generated through intimidating impressions of destructive power. According to the theoretical analysis of the results, smoking adolescent girls have relatively much symbolic power capital but relatively little symbolic virtue capital compared to adolescent girls that do not smoke.

Smoking Motivation in the Face of Stigmatization: A Bourdieusian Analysis of Impressions2017In: Stigma and Health, ISSN 2376-6972, p. 1-8Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Earlier research from Western countries has indicated that individuals with low socioeconomic status(SES) initiate tobacco smoking even though smoking is a stigmatized practice. We propose thattheoretical developments of Bourdieu’s theories on capital can reveal a plausible mechanism thatexplains smoking motivation in the face of stigmatization, and we perform a double-blind randomizedcontrolled experiment with the impressions of a smoking adolescent girl to test and elaborate on ourproposition. The empirical data was collected through questionnaires distributed to 622 Swedishadolescents during the fall of 2015. Half the questionnaires included a picture of a smoking girl and halfthe questionnaires included an identical picture without the act of smoking. Binary logistic regressionsindicate that the girl in the picture was perceived as significantly less likable, more popular, less kind, less compassionate, more deceitful, more conceited, and more liable to bully when she smoked a cigarettethan when she did not smoke. The theoretical analysis implies that adolescents with low SES may seekto smoke in the face of stigmatization because of a motivating mechanism that functions in accordancewith Bourdieu’s economic logic of action. The concluding section presents implications for tobaccocontrolpolicies.

    Abstract [en]

Academic debates on the role and position of civil society organisations (CSOs) in welfare states largely refer to policies and practices outlined at the national level. They therefore fail to recognise variations within nations. Based on a comparative case study of three Swedish metropolitan cities, this article illustrates the importance of local, contextualised analyses. Through the concept of local civil society regimes, the study identifies three regime types, namely liberal, corporatist and social democratic. The key distinguishing factor between them relates to their different ideological positions regarding the role of CSOs in the marketisation and privatisation of public social welfare represented at the local level. The article argues for the need for further analysis to explore the implications of decentralisation from the perspective of local CSOs and their constituencies.

The present dissertation takes the multi-faceted phenomenon of deception as its point of departure. The aim is to make a case for deception as a social phenomenon, and to frame theoretically and define the skills and abilities that make deception possible.

A theoretical model based on a number of ideal types is constructed. The purpose of the model is to differentiate particular aspects of deception, and the model is illustrated with examples of actions of more or less well-known impostors. The examples were collected from a variety of sources, such as autobiographies and television programs.

As a first step, the legal definition of deception, i.e. fraud, and statistics on crimes of deception in Sweden are presented. Different theoretical approaches are also discussed; deception as a personality trait, and deception as communication and interaction.

In order to illuminate the social dimensions, it is emphasized that deception constitutes a particular type of relationship between deceiver and deceivee. This particular form of interaction exploits elementary forms, and it is also asymmetrical in terms of the intentions of the parties involved.

The concept of social competence is used to describe the skills and abilities required for successful acts of deception. It is argued that the social competence of deceivers consists of three types: strategic, normative, and dramaturgic competencies. The strategic competency involves being goal-rational and strategic, for example, the ability to predict the actions of the potential addressee. In the normative competency, norms and reference to norms are used strategically. The dramaturgic competency represents an operationalization and enactment of the two other competencies, and resembles the preparation and performance of an actor.

The different contexts in which deception can occur are also discussed. A preliminary typology is presented, with the aim of demonstrating the difficulties in drawing clear lines between various types of deception. The extended approach to deception also means that it can be viewed as a part of everyday social interaction.

Finally, some thoughts on deception in the light of societal changes are presented. It is argued that the increasing demands on people to promote themselves in various ways in todays society can be perceived as an invitation to deception and fabrication. These demands can generate feelings of inferiority and a fear of eventually being unmasked as an impostor, or a phony.
