The alternation between preterite and imperfect in the Swedish translation of a Spanish literary text : An approach to the problem of perceiving the differences in aspect between the Spanish past tenses (imperfect and indefinite) in the translation into Swedish of Javier Marías’s novel All souls. (English)
Abstract [es]

Abstract [en]

This study explores how to explain the differences in aspect between the Spanish past tenses (imperfect and indefinite) from the perspectives of the communicative, cognitive and contrastive grammars in the Javier Marías’s novel All souls. Regarding the contrastive perspective, the aim is to find out what linguistic resources the Swedish language has to transmit the aspects of both Spanish verbs.

The analysis shows that it is not necessary to clarify the aspects of the imperfect and the indefinite with meticulous explanations, but through two descriptive rules and the support of visual aids. As regards to the Swedish language, the analysis shows that, in addition to simple verb forms (preteritum), verbal periphrases such as 'höll på att' (i.e. she was doing) are often used to express imperfective aspectual values; that is, to speak of habitual or repetitive actions in the past. In contrast, the perfective aspect is expressed using periphrases consisting of the verb 'få' in 'preteritum' plus the infinitive of the main verb, or adding adverbs such as ‘just’ or ‘precis’ to speak of actions which are clearly concluded in the past. Another conclusion of the study is that the aspectual differences of the indefinite and the imperfect are not always perceived in the Swedish translation of Marías’s novel All souls.
