The bright future : - A study about individuals experiences of not being admitted to the education programs they have applied for (English)
Abstract [en]

In the following study I have researched if however the fact of not being admitted to university- or college education programs individuals aspire to read, can have an impact on individuals self-image and identity. Another aspect that I have researched in this study is if the experiences of not being admitted are felt differently between individuals from families with academic background, compared to those individuals that are not. The method used to collect data for this study is a qualitative method in form of 8 qualitative semi –structured interviews, so that I could capture these individuals experiences. The theories I have chosen to apply on to this study are mainly the social psychological theories in the form of symbolic interactionism, roles, labelling theory and deviance. Besides these theory’s I’m also applying Pierre Bourdieu’s theories of fields, capital and habitus. The result of the 8 interviews I conducted showed that not being admitted could have a negative impact on individuals self- image and identity. Besides these findings I couldn’t read a undeviating difference between the experiences of the two groups of individuals, and for that reason I can’t say that there is a difference between the groups experiences based on data collected in this study.
