Karlstad University, Faculty of Health, Science and Technology (starting 2013).
2016 (Swedish)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesisAlternative title
The theatre nurse's supervision of students in the operating ward - an interview study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction: The student is in need of pedagogic supervision which sees the individual and gives an opportunity to grow in its profession. The knowledge to supervise gives the student support and is a method for reflection and development in professional competence. The supervisor has a central role in the students development and maturity.

Aim: From the supervising theatre nurse’s aspect describe the individual and interprofessional perioperativ educational situation.

Metod: The study was conducted as an interview study with semistructured questions. Participants in the study were 6 theatre nurses which at one point had supervised in the educational operating room located at the central surgery ward in the university hospital in Linköping. The interviews were transcribed and analysed with conventional content analysis.

Result: The analysis of the interviews rendered one theme with 5 categories and 3 subcategories The supervisor had expectations on itself and also on the student. Supervision in team could be difficult due to the multitude of people needing consideration. The surgery wards high demands on production didn’t give the supervisor and the student sufficient amount of time to educate thoroughly. The educational surgery hall gave the theatre nurse time to supervise in a good way without feeling stress.

Conclusion: A mixture of a conventional theatre operating hall and an operating hall for education furthers professional development.
