Abstract [en]

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine how teachers, assistants and residential caregivers talks about the possibilities for student with intellectual and developmental disabilities to participate through decision-making. The study is qualitative and the metodological approach is focus group interviews with three professional. Participation in questions regarding to the child is decided by the UN convention on the rights of the child, and the convention is present through out this study. The possibilities to participation for the selected group of student, where everyone has a deaf-blind diagnosis combined with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is as both the result and earlier research shows related to communication and personnel competence.

The study has Harts ladder of participation as a theoretical basis and the analysis shows a way of working where students are offer frequent choice in everyday situations. At the same time the result shows a collision between the decision that each and every individual student should be participating in larger and more crucial choice and more protective factors not too expose the student for perceived demand-situations.
