This study is about five young Swedish girls and their description of social expectations on themselves and their ideas about honor. The aim resulted in three research questions trying to examine what social expectations the girls described, to see how they defined the term honor and to find out whether they believed there was a correlation between honor and social expectations. The study is based on a qualitative method using semi structured interviews. The sample consists of five girls born and raised in Sweden between the ages of 21-23. After the interviews were conducted, the data was encoded and the results analyzed using gender role theory, the concept of shame and stigmatization perspective.

Encoding of the data resulted in six themes: The compliant women or the disorderly slut, the strong black sheep or the lonely whore and finally honor for everyone and honor for girls. The common factors for the themes were the fact that the girls described an ambivalence and contrast related to the social expectations upon themselves. The girls explained that they were expected to be girls that could balance and be compliant both in their behavior and looks without crossing the social expectations because otherwise they would be considered as disorderly and slutty. Also, the girls explained that in order to stand up against the social expectations they had to be what they called, a strong black sheep with a strong personality and have a big safety net, otherwise they would lower their social status and end up in alienation with a stigma as whore. Finally the girls discussed the term honor and explained that honor for everybody was about being proud and having prestige but when it comes to girls the meaning of the term honor changes and focuses on social expectations and the girls responsibilities to maintain their honor by not engaging in too many sexual relations because that would result in a bad reputation, guilt and shame. 

Denna uppsats handlar om fem unga svenska tjejer och deras beskrivningar av sociala förväntningar på sig själva och deras föreställningar om heder. Syftet mynnade ut i tre frågeställningar som handlade om att undersöka vilka sociala förväntningar tjejerna beskrev, att se hur de definierade begreppet heder och ta reda på om de upplevde att det fanns något samband mellan heder och sociala förväntningar. För att besvara syftet och frågeställningarna användes en kvalitativ metod med semistrukturerade intervjuer. Urvalet bestod av fem tjejer födda och uppvuxna i Sverige mellan åldrarna 21-23. Efter utförda intervjuer användes kodning för att bearbeta empirin och resultaten analyserades utifrån könsrollsteorin, skambegreppet samt stigmatiseringsperspektiv.

Kodning av empirin resulterade i sex teman: Den medgörliga kvinnan eller den bråkiga slampan, det starka svarta fåret eller den ensamma horan och slutligen heder för alla och heder för tjejer. Det gemensamma för dessa sex teman var att tjejerna upplevde en ambivalens och motsättning i relation till sociala förväntningarna på sig själva. De menade att det handlar om att antingen vara en tjej som kan balansera och vara medgörlig både i sitt beteende och utseende utan att ta för mycket plats och sticka ut för att detta skulle leda till att hon betraktades som bråkig och slampig. Likaså, pratade tjejerna om att man antingen måste vara ett starkt svart får med en stark personlighet och ha ett stort skyddsnät för att stå emot sociala förväntningarna om man vill gå sin egen väg, för annars skulle man reduceras i social status och hamna i ett utanförskap med ett stigma som hora. Slutligen menade tjejerna att heder för alla handlar om stolthet och prestige i jämförelse till tjejer då det handlar om sociala förväntningar och tjejers ansvar att bevara sin heder genom att inte ingå i för många sexuella relationer som skulle resultera i ett dåligt rykte, skuld och skam.
