The Secret : A qualitative study of ten women's experience of hiding their sexual orientation (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to increase knowledge about what it means for an individual to conceal his or her sexual orientation to the environment. Data was collected through a semi structured interview and thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. The analysis resulted in five themes that describe the subjects experience of hiding their sexual orientation: Perceived inner conflict, fear of the environments reactions, adaption and alienation, negative attitudes and silence and expectations of a heterosexual lifestyle. The study´s participants describe that attitudes toward homosexuality improved, but at the same time is neither bi- or homosexuality as accepted as heterosexuality.
